***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (1 Viewer)

Lunch Pail Mooks, Jabronis and Palookas who played CYO sports and who would have "made it to the bigtime" if the coach didn't hate them also hated "The Process".  That's turning out a'ight.
Lets be fair the Process has had some serious luck from the MCW trade to Joel Embiid having been hurt before the draft amongst other things like the East being so bad. I'll give the team props for sticking with it though but I wouldn't call it an overall success since the end goal according to many Processer fans was to win a title or at least thats the defense always was.

Joe Maddon when he was in TB I remember was one of the first managers to use the Shift and then a lot of teams caught on. The stuff the Phillies are doing by having players or trying them at multiple positions was something Maddon started when he was with the Rays as well with guys like Sean Rodriguez, Matt Joyce, Ben Zobrist and others. Zobrist was the first of the super utility everyday players too when it first started
Extreme shifts were used against Ted Williams.

Tony Phillips, Jose Oquendo, Gil McDougald and many others were super utility men before Joe Maddon.

There's very little in baseball that hasn't been tried before.

Well that’s not good and something I was wondering about above. Was hoping I was being too dramatic but apparently there’s a feeling already started in the locker room. Curious as to who we think said it? Nola?

And I know it’s Nick Williams, but fwiw he commented on the computer making the lineup as to why he wasn’t starting.

Think about it from the players perspective, especially all the young players. He’s messing around with their careers and future contracts. You think any player really wants to play multiple positions and/or sit every other day? Or is he supposed to be happy about being so versatile?
Lets play devils advocate though? Would you be ok with playing multiple positions if it improves your value and being so versatile? Versatility is something they look for in Sports these days. From a guy who can play multiple positions in Baseball, from the Soccer player who can play as the Playmaking MF to the Striker role to possible a Winger, The Football player who can play Safety/CB or skill player offensive player you can do things with, The Baseketball player who is a big who can play D and stretch the floor. If I was a player today I'd be ok with the position switch but Id be quick to say if this thing isn't working out I'd either like to go back to my old position or try me at another position to help my value increase more. Todays Athlete needs to realize theres no more one dimensional players. If you can only do one thing you aren't as valuable unless you are a super star player as the guy who can give you the same or better production and do multiple things you can't do. It's better use of economic resources.

More so saying it became more widely accepted since those days. I'm not trying to make Maddon some baseball Wizard or anything here though. Just saying in the last 20 yrs he was one of the first this was wildly accepted with. I always felt that baseball was also a game where guys needed to play multiple positions as well.

This Scott Kingrey kid seems pretty good

Alfaro might have the best arm for a catcher I've seen since Yadir Molina or Pudge. And no I'm not comparing his Defense to them. Just saying he's got a cannon I haven't seen in a catcher since them.

Things have taken a nice turnaround since the 1st series of the year.  Maybe Kapler knows what he is doing afterall!
Yup this manager might just have a clue of what he's doing.  Now let's see what happens when they play someone other than the Reds.  Still good managing in this series.

So apparently my buddy is mad at me for saying I wanted to watch the Flyers game over going to the Phillies game (I'm on vacation this week and couldn't go to the Sunday game do to plans already in the city) last night. He wanted to go Sunday do to Arrietta so I told him maybe Wednesday game since he was off. This was before I saw the Flyers playoff schedule and Saturday I get a text while at work his Dads Bday is Wednesday so probably no Phillies game. I then said that's fine I just saw the playoff schedule want to watch the Playoff game anyway. So I figured we aren't doing anything. Well last night I get some text of smart ### comment from him making fun of me watching the Flyers game and Sixers crack (Since he knows how I don't like them). We kind of got into it and I asked why he cared I thought he was doing something for his Dad's Bday.. He tells me they celebrated on Sunday. Ok well if thats the case you could've sent me some sort of message email, text call, carrier pigeon what have you, saying hey we celebrated my dad's bday on Sunday if you change your mind we can see the Phillies game. I was also texting him yesterday as he said he'd see a movie in the afternoon which led me to think he had plans last night for his dad. Could've said something then to. all of this do to his lack of communication which he'll blame on me somehow. Sometimes I don't know why I'm even friends with this guy.  :wall:

They’re now 7-5 Billy.  You willing to give him a chance now?

Always willing to give a chance. Was just incredulous at the early showing. And about to be 8-5 is alright, but 7 of those wins coming against AAA teams a combined 9-39. Let’s let the record play out a bit before we throw it out in Gabe’s defense.

Good lord "reaching" for Kingery might have been the smartest draft move I've ever made in my life.  Dude is a total stud that we eligible to play just about every single position.  He was a guy I wanted badly pre-draft and I was going to make sure that happened at any cost.

I didn't pick him up in my keeper league filled with Phillies fans and kind of regretting it. I Have Murphy and ALtuve and Sano and Machado and Swanson in my INF so it's not like I desperately needed the guy either but kind of regretting not taking him. My first pick yahoo league I took Ohtani as a pitcher. Kind of wish I took the batter too.

You have a great infield but it could be even better with Kingery.  Ohtani is an absolute beast.  Great pick.  Only downside - is he ever eligible to get 2 starts in a week?  Also, as a hitter he'll never be an every day player.  Even with how great he is, there is some downside.

Patience... a notorious slow starter
Yeah, they said last night that he has a higher hard-contact rate than Harper and Trout, but nothing's falling for him. Pretty much all of their FA and Trade acquisitions stink right now. At least the homegrown talent is playing well.

Yep, he's had incredibly bad luck.  Always hits the ball hard but manages to hit right to a fielder.

Yahoo has him as a Pitcher and then another separate position UTL player. Yeah My team needed work. I got to give credit to someone on my board for stepping in to co manage with me for 3 yrs. He gave me a lot of good advise. I also had a great pitching staff with Jose Fernandez involved until that unfortunate accident. In my first year I just had no clue what I was doing and made a few horrible trades that set me back. Ended up with a co manager the 2nd year who went MIA half way through the season and when I got a new Co manager I realized my first was trying to make moves behind my back and such. Many of the other managers realized I had been in a terrible situation so were OK considering we were in a free league of having a co manager for me. He was really great and I could always count on him getting a player or a line up switch fast considering he was up earlier then me for work. Since being on my own I'm up and down but I've mostly battled injury and a death with this roster so I've gone through some terrible luck

Obviously Kapler is learning on the job. He's a smart guy. Hopefully he figures out.
Their schedule has helped a lot but I think Kapler has reined himself in.

@ScottLauber: Gabe Kapler after a 3-2, 11-inning win to complete a four-game sweep of the Pirates: "This is the proudest day that I've had of our men." #Phillies are 13-3 since 1-4 start.

Hard to believe but record wise we are one of the top 10 teams right now almost at the end of April. Still fairly early though.

Also some clown in my Fantasy Baseball league keeps sending me trash offers for Arrietta and Manny Machado. He offers me Hoskins as the only staying piece but keeps changing the other guys and trying to send me guys pitching wise that are getting lit up like Christmas trees.

I'm pretty sure that precisely after I made this post, Kingery has been probably the worst hitter in baseball.  Sorry guys.

Kingery's (lack of) plate discipline probably means he'll always be streaky. He's no Rhys at the dish.

JP, Franco, and a couple other pieces for Machado? Rumor I heard from a buddy any truth to it?

Also heard Hamels name thrown around.

Machado rumors are certainly getting a lot of buzz.  Seems a bit risky depending on the exact deal, considering the contract situation.  Though JP, Franco and some minor leaguers wouldn't be bad.  Assume Sixto is where they would start.

Sixto for half a season of Manny? Why?

No sense giving up anything (unless you truly feel the Phils have a shot at winning it all this year with Machado). He's waited this long, he's going to test FA in the off-season no matter where he gets traded. All he costs us at that point is money. Really need to see more of JP the rest of this year anyway. If JP/Franco/Kingery can fill 2 of the IF positions, maybe we're better off going after Harper?

Jake Arrieta described himself as furious, said Phillies defensive shifts are worst in the league. "We need to change that. Copy the best. That's not my job." Said needs to be accountability check "top to bottom," after "horse-bleep" series.

Im sure that they havent been beneficial to him at all this year, given his great numbers...

it is tough to see it happen in the moment for any pitcher, I’m sure.  But maybe if they had gotten a run or rbi from any position player in the series, things would be looking better for everyone.

I didn’t see the game, just looking at some highlights from today and the other games.  I don’t understand where the shifts were a problem?  It seems like most of the key hits came against standard defense, so he wants them to shift more?

the big inning today featured a fluke check swing infield hit, a bloop single and then arrietta hanging a curve that mccutchen barely kept fair to the opposite field for a hr.

also had no idea that pudge rodriguez’s Kid was a mlb pitcher.

Is this just a matter of the offense was never really that talented and now it's finally starting to catch up?  Herrera was playing way over his head but he's come crashing back down to Earth.

I never could stand Arrieta.  Piece of #### for throwing his manager under the bus.

I was posting it more for the reason that he openly blasted the manager. Didn’t watch the game so can’t comment on the shifts, just didn’t think it was cool he fired off so easily. But it does tell you that the pitchers probably aren’t thrilled with the defense game plan happening behind them.

MLBN had the numbers up last night. They're not good to the point that 'not good' isn't doing their ineffectiveness justice.

:goodposting:  I get that Jake's a competitor, but not a good look. Complaining about the shift when the offense scored 1 run in 29 innings seems a bit silly.
