With Amaro and this scouting staff?Worst part is they havent even bottomed out yet. Imagine when Hamels and Papelbon are gone. Should have the #1 pick in the next two drafts. If everything breaks right, they could have a good young team in another 5 years.
I don't think anyone thinks he was the only problem. Heck, everyone seems to think this means Amaro is all but gone which is nice. I feel a bit bad for Ryno but I wasn't terribly impressed with his managerial prowess. Not just the lack of success on the field but he pissed off Cole among others. Seemed a bit over his head at this level. Haven't watched a ton this year but the fiasco with keeping Frenchy in probably sealed it as well.Clearly the only problem. NLCS not out of the question now.
No, I know. The guy was certainly not helping. I think I have been suppressing all my feelings about this team for three years and now everything is making me mental. If the sixers don't improve 2 years from now, I will repeat this cycle.I don't think anyone thinks he was the only problem. His option for next year vested because he has made more than 10 asinine public statements this year. They're going to end up keeping Rube after this season areant they?
Of course they're going to keep him. The Phils never fire anyone. He wont be the GM anymore though, he'll get a made-up title like everyone else thats ever worked for the Phils. MacPhail really needs to clean house. They're going to end up keeping Rube after this season areant they?
Pretty great presser.Just announced a presser at 2:30pm.... Pat Gillick and John Middleton (who never speaks at these things) will attend... no mention of Rube... hmmmmmm?
ETA - presser is to announce hiring of Andy MacPhail... Rube firing may be wishful thinking
Phillies officially sign Jhailyn Ortiz, who has huge power potential
July 9, 2015, 10:00 pm
LOS ANGELES The long-awaited signing of teenage slugging prospect Jhailyn Ortiz has become official. The Phillies announced the signing Thursday night.
The Phillies had a verbal agreement with Ortiz for months. The 16-year-old first baseman/outfielder from the Dominican Republic stands 6-2 and weighs 260 pounds. Ortiz has huge power, but needs to improve as a hitter. In particular, he needs to make more contact and improve his recognition of off-speed pitches. But that can be said of most 16 year olds.
Ortiz received a signing bonus of just over $4 million, sources said. That puts the Phillies over their Major League Baseball-mandated allotment of $3,041,700 for this international signing period. Teams that go over their allotment face penalties ranging from a tax to forfeiting the ability to sign top players in future signing periods. The Phillies are expected to avoid any penalty after acquiring about $1.5 million in international slot money from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor-league pitchers Chris Oliver and Josh Taylor last weekend.
Ortiz will need plenty of development time. He will likely get into game action at the Phillies academy in the Dominican Republic and participate in the teams Instructional League program in the fall as he gets his pro career started.
The Phillies also announced the signings of Venezuelan catcher Rafael Marchan and infielder Kuedy Bocio and pitcher Manuel Silva, both of the Dominican Republic. All these players are 16. The signing period for international players of this age began on July 2.
Can get 2 tickets for $27. http://mlb.mlb.com/phi/ticketing/nola_offer.jsp?partnerId=ed-9489622-818348443#Nola starting Tuesday night vs. Tampa Bay.
Never been more compelled to use the term "Bye, Felicia" than I do right now.Insein said:Bye bye paps. Anyone know anything about Pivetta?
Even with big money. It's hard to get good young players away from their teams. Usually you're over paying for guys in their late 20's, early 30's for the hope that they can duplicate what they've already achieved. If the Phils execute the Hamels deal, following the Papelbon trade committed payroll will be around $70MM entering 2015, give or take with how arb numbers fall (if they simply take cheap prospects for Cole). $25MM of which goes to Ryan Howard![]()
Combo that with the Comcast money starting to roll in, by my math about $80MM a year over 25 years (2.5B), I will be very interested to see how they manage it.
Please don't let Amaro manage it, please.
Yeah, please dont waste money on guys to "bridge the gap". They're gonna suck for the next 3 years (at least). Put all available resources into the future, not the present.Even with big money. We still need to get he farm going again. If we have to "eat" Hamel's money to get real players in here, I think they have to do it. Especially with the Comcast money coming in. They can afford to eat that money.
I mean seriously, when does the other shoe drop on Amaro? Has to be soon.Getting rangers 3, 4, 5 prospects plus others seems pretty good to me. Looks like old rube pulled it off (or maybe gillick and macphail gave him a dollar to go get a soda while the grownups talked.)
That Schmidt guy was pretty good. This is a sad one for me...I know some will say "this had to be done" but only because we've had the worst front office probably ever. That makes it sting more IMO. Has there been a better Phillie we ever drafted?
