***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (2 Viewers)

So we had the MLB draft last week. Anyone know anything about these Young Cats we just got? I read a bit about our 1st round pick. 3B probably more of a 1B/LF. They describe him as a Pat Burrell type attacking hitter but he puts the ball in play and gets on base. One of the cool things about my old board was there was a lot of talking heads on there who knew their prospects and how I mostly kept up with the minors.

After yesterdays 9th inning debacle Hecter Neris has been demoted to Too LV. Looks likely SerAnthony Dominguez could take on the closers role but nothing official yet

There is no defined closer, since new-age Gabe doesn’t believe in a closer.

I kind of see Gabe's point though. This bullpen is garbage. If he saves Seranthony for the 9th, he'll never use him.

On a nice little run here. 4 series wins in a row. Let's go for the sweep of the Nats. That'd be huge in Washington.

Explain this Mike Moustakas thing like I'm an idiot. He's a 3rd baseman that has about the same numbers as Franco but is 4 years older. Why are the Phillies interested again?

Aaron Nola is an all star and pitching like an ace. This kid could be really special and we could be seeing our next Cole Hamels. Also I would not be opposed to selling high on Herrera. He's playing way over his head. I've seen this from him before but during the 6-0 loss to the Yanks I was at the game and on a DP he didn't hustle out a ground ball. That stuff just PO's me to no end. This guy is a hotdog out there playing way over his head. He's fast enough if he hustles to put some pressure on the fielders to make a good play. By not hustling you are just making the out almost as easy as if you had a pitcher or most catchers trying to run it out. Also we have ample OF depth already that we could trade Herrera. Just move a few guys around. Williams and Altherr can both play CF as well as Roman Quinn. Defensively Quinn is fairly solid it's the oftense other then his speed thats a huge question as well as health. Plus we got Mickey Moniak on the way at some point.

Source tells TGP that the Phillies have become heavily focused on the Royals in trade talks, likely targeting Moustakas or Merrifield. In purely coincidental news, the Royals had a scout present in Reading last week.

Per Bob Nightengale

The #Orioles have discussed potentially packaging reliever Zach Britton with Manny Machado to enhance the prospect package they”ll receive from #Dodgers or anyone else

Take this with a grain of Salt as it comes from Jon Heyman who's more of a mouth piece for teams then anything else. He's reporting that Manny Machado is the Phillies main target and have the pieces to make it happen. Phillies had Scouts in Bal on Mon night and O's have had scouts in the Phillies minors. He also reports Brewers and Dodgers are potential most interested suitors as well as the D'backs and Yanks. The next option if not Machado is contrary to belief of a certain Royal 3B that the target is Royals infielder Whit Merrifeild.

Supposedly us and Milwaukee are finalists for Manny. They (Bal) supposedly want it done by next week.

Oh man. If that happens I’m all aboard.

The Phils have the second best record in the NL but they kind of limped into the All Star break. If they can get Machado without emptying the farm, they need to do it. I don't think they win the world series with him but they do win the division and we'll see from there. Get a nice winning culture going and show Machado that we're on our way up and maybe he'll sign here for the Long haul.

I think the Phils have to be the heavy favorite to sign Machado long term.   They can write a blank check.  I don’t think the other major players can do that.  The question is do they give up prospects now  to make a run this year?  I think they absolutely should. With Machado, they probably  become the favorites to win the NL this year.

Here we go. Our first prediction followed by denouncements.

@marksreesewip

A source told @JoeGiglioSports that "Machado to the Phils Wednesday morning" and that "Andy MacPhail is a magician"

Roch Kubatko @masnRoch

Multiple sources say #orioles don’t have deal done with #phillies for Machado. #dodgers and #brewers also still involved. Told “very close” but nothing has been agreed upon yet

We’ll see.

Salisbury gut feeling is they want Zac Britton packaged in the Manny Machado deal. I've heard a few rumors in the past the O's could trade Britton in a Machado package.

Not only that but you are ahead of the game in contract talks.

Contract talks, shmrontack talks.  Machado wants to get paid and the Phils are in the best position to pay him the most.  None of the other big market teams have the flexibility that the Phils have.

Middleton will give him a private jet if he wants one. Will have no problem giving him 10/300.

Then 10/350 to Harper.

The Philadelphia front-office has no plans to make a run at local boy Trout in a few years?
Of course, according to my plan they’ll have all three! :pickle:

But if they extend Manny, then are able to sign Harper they should do it instead of hoping to trade/wait for Trout.

Holding out hope that it's an Orioles ploy to get the Phillies to cough up more.  Honestly, if they want Six Toes at this point, why not. He's 3-4 years away anyway.

Ugh. They have Kemp miced up at the All Star game and they asked him about taking selfies with Machado before the game. They asked if he was going to be his new teammate. He gave a half chuckle with "I don't know what you're talking about."

Orioles are going through medicals, so a trade has been agreed upon. No one confirming any team yet but Heyman is set on the deal being with the Dodgers.
I usually don't report anything Heyman says as he's a mouthpiece of misinformation for teams/agents. But Rosenthal is saying all but confirmed now

Yeah that's what most thought but then this from Rosenthal just 30 mins ago

Can report with more certainty: Machado to #Dodgers happening. Among remaining questions, in addition to specifics of return beyond OF Yusniel Diaz: How much money, if any, #Orioles will send #Dodgers to secure a better package and help ease LAD’s luxury-tax concerns.

The good thing with the Lux tax Dodgers can't really afford to extend him. Phillies in perfect spot over all the big market clubs to give Machado and Harper and pay day.

I know I'm in the minority, but Im glad we didn't trade valuable prospects to get Machado. I dont think he puts us over-the-top this year and I think we sign either him or Harper in the off-season anyway, so why waste the prospects now when we can get him for a measly 300M this off-season? We'll need the prospects in order to trade for another legit SP this offseason anyway.

That is that I suppose. We're still in first place when people were expecting just .500 this year. Let's see how they finish.

The Eagles won the Super Bowl, Sixers look like they could go on a decent run here for quite a while, and the Phils are in 1st place but yet we still all feel so empty inside!!!

I love this team but they also make me go bat#### crazy.  Their defense needs to improve drastically.  I am pretty sure Rhys Hoskins is not a good outfielder.  Herrera is decent center fielder but he makes way too many dumb mistakes (i.e. not putting on sunglasses then losing a routine flyball in the sun @ PIT).  I think Kapler is a good manager and he is bringing new approaches to the game but you don't need to all sorts of crazy shifts all the time.

and for the love of God LEARN HOW TO BLOCK A DAMN WILD PITCH JORGE AND ANDREW!!!

Yep, the Phillies are in first place and I am still #####ing LOL

Can Hernandez play SS?  Assdribble’s bat is great, but it’s a bad 2B glove.  It’ll be worse at SS.
Dont think I ever seen Hernandez play short, but with Gabe why not? Cabrera’s range at SS isn’t great either. I guess Kingery is super utility bench guy now. Or sent down.

Why are we getting Cabrera?
overall, i think it's a for positional depth and a better bat in the mix.  The bench is awful.  I am skeptical of his defense, though, and not sure that giving up Kilome was worth it, even though he is far from a sure thing.

Seems like Ramos and loup don’t really move the needle much, but they should be competent members of the roster and seems like we basically gave up nothing, so I will take it.

Ramos is a pretty big offensive upgrade over Alfaro and Loup has been good against lefties and can be used as a strict LOOGY once rosters expand. Assuming Cabrera plays some SS, they addressed the 3 biggest needs on the team. Still time to pick up a RH OF to platoon with Williams. I like what we did so far. See what happens.

Get Manny or Harper this off-season and make a big trade for a SP and we're ready to seriously compete next year.

Ramos has a chance to be a big help, but I am downgrading it a bit based on his current injury.  I assume that's why they were able to get him so cheap.

Wow, Pivetta's having quite a nice statistical season.  Better xFIP than Nola, well more K/9 (not unexpected), and about equal BB/9.  Nola's BABIP is almost 100 points lower.  If Pivetta could figure out how to keep these HRs down, he could be crushing it.
