***OFFICIAL*** Philadelphia Phillies Thread (1 Viewer)

Oh, I agree that Abreu isn't nearly as good as Andruw in the field. I was merely comparing their style. People have given Andruw a hard time for years too because they think that he's loafing it in the outfield (I used to be one of them). But he just doesn't need to run around like crazy most of the time because he has such a long stride and he breaks on balls so quickly.

I also think that Jones would be treated the same as Abreu if he played in Philly. They would say that he hits too many HRs with nobody on base, he strikes out too much and he's lazy in the outfield. Maybe not, but that's my perception.

I think that the same mentality is why there are still so many people in Philly that love Iverson. Sure he may hate the fans and make his teammates worse, but the guy plays his heart out so they respect him.
Ok, so you do know something.

I give Philly fans a hard time, but when I have kids, if they decide to be Eagles fans I'll be ok with that. If they decide to be Phillies fans or Sixers fans though, I'll be contacting some child labor syndicate in the Middle East to sell them to.

So Phillies, you continue to do us proud.

Sitting there in the 5th inning with a nice lead on Thursday. I'm thinking, ok, we can win this game then surely we can go and take 2 of 3 from Pittsburgh. Right?! Then we'd end April at .500 and at least be in decent shape.

Of course we had to bomb Thursday's game then come back and lose 2 in a row to the Bucs. Saturday's game was excruciating as Alex Gonzalez grounds into a DP with the bases loaded vs. Roberto "Gasolina" Hernandez.

Hibernating til I can see Bunkley tearing some QB's head off.

Roberto Horrendez oVVn3d us. Horrible to watch. Only Alex S. Gonzalez. This guy couldn't even keep a job with the devil rays.

I guess that I should be fair. A nice little 5-game winning streak and now they are back at .500. The best thing about it is that the last two nights that won games that they really would have normally lost.

Getting after the 5th inning is practically death for this team, but they were able to hang in there and pull out two wins against their biggest division nemesis. Braves are not looking too strong this year (how many years in a row have we said it?)

An 8-game winning streak and now just a sweep of the Mets away from 1 game out of first. I am amazed that they could turn it around like this, though it is really just setting us up for an inevitable major collapse toward the end of the season.

Can't wait to see the fans' reaction to Wagner after his bizarre comments yesterday.

Wagner is  Corey Lidle's comments are great in response. Why would you bring this embellished clubhouse stuff into the media? It's not like Wagner is even having a great year. He's blown three saves already.

Even though Madson had a decent outing last time out, I think it would benefit the Phils having him go back to the bullpen and calling up Cole Hamels for Madson's spot in the rotation. Madson was very good from the pen.

Gotta think that this will certainly happen if Hamels continues his current success for about another month. That would be really nice, especially since we'll still have Wolf to bring out later in the year. (hopefully won't have to rely on him, but nice to know he's there too)

In 23 innings at the triple-A level, Hamels has allowed one run, 10 hits and one walk. He has struck out a remarkable 36.

Abreu defines clutch. :lmao:

Jebus. This is more like the team that I know and love. Three straight days with the lead or tie in the late innings. All 3 times we choke on it like a big fat donkey . . . anyway.

I didn't see yesterday's game, just the highlights. On Jenkins's game-winning hit, was Abreu loafing it to the ball? I only saw it once, so I can't be sure if he was trying not to overplay in case of a weird ricochet, but it really looked like he was moving slowly and maybe this cost the go-ahead run?

And all the geniuses touting Bobby Abreu's merits, watch his play in the 6th inning on Tuesday night and in the 4th last night. Obviously you're all such brilliant baseball minds, so you will no doubt raise the impenetrable defense that he won a gold glove.

Every time they get close, they go backwards...hopefully they finally get within 1/2 game after today's game...

Really hoped they would have played this game on Monday night instead of waiting 4.5 hours to start at 11:30pm est.

Now of course here's what will happen: The Phils will win tonight and the Giants will beat the Dodgers to pull the phils within 1. Both teams will then win out for the weekend - just like last year.

Lets go SF!

 At least if they don't make the playoffs, they can fire Manuel. (Who says Philadelphia is not positive?)

Just an FYI to the Phillies management in case they are reading this. The offseason has started and you are allowed to sign players.

Oh, right, we signed Wes Helms.

We're getting there....slowly, but surely.Although the Phils don't have a bonafide stud #1 starter, I think their rotation is pretty solid now with Garcia, Myers, Hamels, Eaton, and Garcia. I wonder how they will go in rotation order.I read too that people think the Phils will try and move Jon Lieber for bullpen help. I'll all for this move too. It would be nice if they could get another bat (I would have creamed in my pants if they were able to get Manny Ramirez....can you imagine Utley/Howard/Manny.....wow), but we'll see. It's looking good. I think I'm going to catch a few games this year.

I do have to give them credit.

Floyd could turn out to be great, but Garcia is proven so this is a very solid move. Giving Gonzalez back also takes a little luster out of the Thome deal, but again, they had to get a solid starter and they did that.

I am still nervous that Eaton will be the new Andy Ashby.

So what can you guys tell me about Gavin Floyd?

Good luck with Sweaty Freddy
From what I saw, I wasn't that impressed. His control didn't seem to be there and he seemed to like to get the ball up in the zone. That being said, he's still young (only 23 years old) and he might just need a little more time. Here are his stats from 2004 through 2006 with the Phils:

24 games, 7-5 record, 6.96 ERA, 108.2 innings pitched, 125 hits, 84 earned runs, 20 HRs, 64 BBs, 75 strikeouts.

The rumored deal has been Lieber to the Brewers for Mench and Turnbow.

Wow, if that goes down, I think the Phils will be in great shape. And I thought they stole Garcia....

I'm guessing Turnbow would replace Gordon as the closer and Gordon becomes a setup or late inning guy?

Turnbow was the worst closer in baseball last year -I'm pretty sure he would be a setup guy. Mench would be a nice grab as a 4th outfield/platoon guy. I would think that deal goes down pretty soon with Garcia in the fold.

Gio Gonzalez was the ptbnl in the Garcia deal. Promising kid but you have to give up something to get something.

Highly touted 1st rounder. 5 seasons as a pro, each worse than the last, poor strikeout rates, control issues, more than a hit per inning since he left AA. There have been a lot of questions about his mental makeup, some suggesting he doesnt have the toughness to make it. That being said, I saw him pitch in AA a few times and he has a filthy curve. His fastball never really lived up to the hype (sitting around 90), but his bender made several hitters look foolish. Of course, when he is off, the curve is WAY off. Still young and LOTS of upside (couldnt be much more downside, I guess).

Right, Turnbow would be setup. Some have actually mentioned Capellan instead of Turnbow, but I think this is just wishful thinking. Another rumor has been Madson for Church. A Church/Mench platoon in RF would be very nice. We still need to trade Rowand for some BP help so Vic can have CF. Rowand to Texas for Otsuka has been mentioned and would be nice.

I heard Church is a bit of a nutcase in the lockerroom, not sure I would want to ship Madson off for him. I like Mench in RF a lot and have no issue trading Rowand. Hopefully Gillick gets everything in motion now that he has Garcia

Too bad we still have Charlie Manuel as our manager..... :(

I think Girardi would have fit in well here.

I would definitely be against trading Madson for a platoon OF. If they just leave him in the bullpen and not move him back and forth from the rotation, he will be fine. I guess that if they got Otsuka and a reliever from Milwaukee, it might not be terrible, but I think I'd still rather keep Madson and probably sign Dellucci.
