That is the rumor.

Those types of rumors never seem to come true. I doubt that people will know until they get the phishbill.

It's fun to speculate.

Hot Rats is awesome. I think this is the very reason he'd say that. When I think "guitar god' I think Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc.. mostly blues-based. When I think "proggy" I think Zappa, Genesis, Rush, etc, which would all be more difficult to learn to play without fumbles.

I'll agree, though I think Trey has had by far the most difficulty with Phish's more "proggy" repertoire since the reunion (and even before, like in the early 2000s). Mike seems to have not lost a step from the olden days, or has even improved, and Page is able to keep up. Fishman sounds a lot better in 2010 than he did in 2009.

wife's speculation: "Born to Run" playing on the Jersey theme.

my speculation: "Joe's Garage" as it has been runored often in the past.

if it is indeed Genesis, then "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" makes the most sense as the band tends to cover double-albums. and, yes, it would be a challenge for Trey.

Sailin' Shoes would be awesome. They've covered Time Loves a Hero since the early days, Little Feat is not out of the realm of possibilities.The below Trey quote though makes it seem like it will be something they don't have experience with -- like the albums they choose tend to seep into their playing later on, and he says the one they've picked will have large effect on his playing. My bet is something newer like TV on the Radio, MGMT or something like that.

“ 'Remain in Light,' at the time we did it, it hadn’t gained the notoriety it’s developed since," he said. "It was fun to come out onstage and know that people were going to discover it. It’s really a jigsaw puzzle to figure that record out. But once we did it, we found ourselves layering in background vocals a little more in that style. It starts to seep into your DNA as a musician. You pick up something from each album.”

As for “Quadrophenia,” the Who’s 1973 rock opera suggested by keyboardist Page McConnell, “I had never really listened to it that much,” Anastasio said. “That was in ’96, and we had just started playing arenas. When we played it in the big room, I got it. All their songs just resonate in these big arenas. They kind of invented that: that huge rolling wall of sound, played through huge arena sound systems. And once you’ve played something like that live, it starts to affect how you write songs.”

Although Anastasio held fast against revealing which album gets the nod for Halloween 2010, he did offer a clue that might get fans chattering.

“This year,” he said, “this one’s for me. The one we picked, I’m going to get more out of this as a musician than I ever have before. Three songs into it, I called everybody and told them, ‘None of the other ones -- I wouldn’t think, hopefully -- will have nearly the effect on my playing this one’s going to.' ”

They covered the eponymous track this summer, and in addition to that beautiful, lilting tune, it features a complex "suite" type song with differing melodies (King of Carrot Flowers 1, 2 and 3) bit of weirdness with space to jam (Oh Comely) and two killer guitar-driven rockers (Holland 1945 and Ghost) That quote about "this one's for me" made me wonder. It obviously would be a choice more about him- he clearly loves indie hipster type music- than the fans, many of whom probably wouldn't recognize the album.

That quote made me think of that album, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and Pavement.

Now I do know that this Boardwalk Hall place has one of, if not the largest, pipe organs in the world. If you watch Phish's cover of Watcher of the Skies it's not hard to imagine them breaking out some Genesis. Lots of organ going on. Return of the Giant Country Horns? King Crimson would also be epic.

All that said, it's Zappa. I know people.

Nov/Dec 1995 was def a crazy phish moment in time. Unless you were there it is impossible to describe. Frantic, crazy, tight, insane, humorous, simple. I also liked the funk era of 98 but nothing compares to that tour. Everything hit perfect. Every venue and seemingly every song was placed perfectly. Lots of jokes, lots of stupid covers, lots of hidden things.

If you missed Big Cypress then you missed a life changer. Simply put it was historic on every level.

We'll never know, of course, but you're selling the Beatles waaaay short here. They were/are superb musicians. I would put nothing past them. I do agree with you that mainstream popularity means nothing. Plus, at this point, a big mainstream hit likely isn't happening anyway, which is fine. Bouncing is about as close as they got there.

I love Phish, and I would agree they are probably the best touring band ever. They've also done something I've never really seen another band do on a consistent basis - they make their entire catalog relevent. Even the silliest, most unlistenable songs become special when they play them live.
