Heyman... :excited:
That might have been Heyman's best work ever
As someone commented at Deadspin, Heyman probably belongs on the Mount Rushmore of mic guys. Definitely him, Flair and the Rock.
 who would consider 4th? Jericho comes to mind. Stone Cold? Don't forget the Big Show! j/k
You can go

Dusty

Foley

Piper

Austin

Savage

Hogan

Graham

Heenan

But I would go.... Jake Roberts
Of those I only like Heenan, Austin and Piper. Heenan was brilliant as color comm.
I think Heenan was the greatest announcer ever.

The Royal Rumble with Flair in it (92?) was comedic genius. One time Pedro Morales saved "Chico" Santana from a beatdown...."Somebody call immigration!"
My favorite Heenan quote might be when HBK threw Jannety through the barber shop window, in a dead serious tone he says something like "did you see that...Jannety jumped right through the window"
I think the quote was "what a coward Jannetty is, he tried to escape through that window." Followed by Gorilla disgustedly saying, "he most certainly did not"

Before that, when Michaels and Jannetty shook hands and hugged, Heenan said something like, "well one without the other just isn't right" seconds later, Michaels superkicks Jannetty and Heenan says, "oh I knew he would do that, he don't need Jannetty"

King Cuerno and Johnny Mundo in a cage! :excited:
Both good performers and decent match, but I disliked the camera work having to watch the match 'behind the cage'. Just didn't come off well for viewing at home IMO.

Lucha Underground has great production with their backstage segments.
Yeah, that kinda sucked. I gave it a pass as the match itself was pretty good. The fact that the match actually ended with Mundo pinning Cuerno instead of escaping the cage was a plus for me.

Whoever came up with the idea of having a camera to catch Vampiro and Stryker's reactions to great moves deserves a beer. To see them mark out like fans while doing commentary is something good to see.

Heenan and Gorilla were the best team ever at the table, IMO. One of my favorite memories of those guys was during a midget battle royal.

Gorilla says "It's bedlam in there" and Heenan replies with "It looks like a riot has broken out at the day care center!" To which, Gorilla replies, of course, "will you stop it!" Those guys were awesome.

I grew up on Heenan and Gorilla commentary. Always great stuff. There were plenty of times where I couldn't wait for a match to end just to see what Heenan would say next. The best times were when Gorilla couldn't hold a straight face and started chuckling....thats when Heenan would lay it on thicker! :lmao:

This is a pretty good column on how poorly the WWE has built up to Wrestlemania:

http://www.cagesideseats.com/wwe/2015/3/10/8187607/narrative-dissonance-and-the-internet-or-the-worst-wrestlemania-build

It's long, so here are are a couple good snippets:

Why are the fans so against WWE’s plans, and if they are, why isn’t the WWE listening to these fans? The answer is relatively simple; the WWE still believe that the people who paid money to be in those crowds, that are wearing their merchandise and subscribe to their network are just a vocal minority. The backwards thinking is that these reactions are similar to what the "internet fan" of old would try to push the WWE to do. It completely flies in the face of current demographics and how wrestling fans have evolved over the years.
Now with just a few weeks left to Wrestlemania the company is scrambling to fill out the card and finding itself backed into strange corners. All the while they are resisting what the fans are calling for but attempting to throw the occasional bone to quiet down the crowds and snap them back into line. Of course it isn’t working and it is just making everything else confusing or just downright bad. Tossing #GiveDivasAChance into their ongoing mess of a Diva’s division might feel clever, but fans realize that WWE is doing nothing extra with their women at all. Giving Daniel Bryan a chance to earn his way into Wrestlemania might have felt clever, but leaving him with nothing heading into Wrestlemania feels confusing for a guy who headlined the PPV right before Wrestlemania and is now somehow associated with a bunch of midcarders stealing Bad News Barrett’s Intercontinental Championship from him while he wrestles.
It’s time for the WWE to either listen to their fans and get over their decades-old grudge against the entity they call "the internet" or to simply stick to their guns and pump out the programming that they want to pump out, regardless of how the crowd reacts. One or the other, because this half-cocked approach is making everything a whole lot worse. For once Wrestlemania feels like a chore as opposed to an exciting, can’t miss spectacle and they only have themselves to blame for this.

they had murders row in the 80s... heenan and gorilla were tops, and vince and jesse weren't bad but I really loved the "big game" feel you got when Gorilla and Jesse worked together. Very real heel/face dynamic but their interaction and relationship at all times personified respect. Almost a Madden and Summerall for wrestling. Treated it with respect and like a sport while being more entertaining than the guys "being funny" today

I remember, I want to say Summerslam 89', Goriila and Jesse were doing the Warrior/Rude match for the IC title, and this exchange happened when Warrior hit Rude with the IC Belt:

Jesse: That should be a DQ Gorilla, he hit the man with the belt right in front of the ref.

Gorilla: But Jesse, it is outside the ring, so he can do whatever he wants.

Jesse: What!? What Are you talking about?

Gorilla: If it isn't in the ring, then it is legal.

Jesse: So by that logic, a guy could bring a gun to the ring and shoot a guy, and as long as it was outside the ring, it'd be ok? Is that what you're saying?

(silence for 5-6 seconds)

Gorilla: Warrior rolls Rude back in the ring.

Jesse: Yeah, that's what I thought!

Actually, that exchange was with Tony Schiavone, and I remember Ventura saying something along the lines of, "You're even dumber than Monsoon! And I thought Gorilla was the stupidest person alive."

Good god, imagine what Kevin Dunn or Vince would be piping into Cole's and Lawler's headsets if that dialog happened today?

Cool episode this week of the Cheap Heat podcast with Chris Hero.
Jericho's podcast from earlier this week with PJ Black/Justin Gabriel was also pretty interesting. Gabriel talked about playing Adam Rose's bunny and how he developed a long-running story line for it, but that the idea was just dropped midstream with no explanation. He said it was pretty emblematic of most storylines/development there... unless you are one of the top 5 or 6 guys, they won't pay attention to you. This sort of reminds me of WCW in the late 90s, except at least with WCW they let the undercard guys do whatever they wanted and the fans were treated to some gems from guys like Jericho, Guerrero, Finley, Regal, etc.

The dropped storylines have been bugging me more and more. We never really get any solid explanation as to why the Bellas stopped feuding with one another (they could have built that into a much bigger crescendo than their painful feud with Paige and AJ now). It looks like we are not getting any satisfactory resolution between the Dust brothers. The Ascension have already been turned into jobbers. I could go on and on.

Tito Santana is in the ring wearing some Mexican outfit before his match and Heenan cracks a line about how it must be taco night since the Mexican waiter was there. Tito right away gets thrown outside the ring and slammed onto the announcers table. Without missing a beat Heenan says "Si senor, we'll take two #3 taco platters and a couple margaritas"

The Flying Burrito!

Some face would gouge the eyes or pull the hair without the referee seeing any of it and Hennan would start ripping on the guy and Gorilla saying

"Look at that no good cheater! He has to resort to breaking the rules. He should be disqualified and they should fine or suspend him!"

Gorilla would retort with some line about how the other wrestler, some villain, was doing the same thing earlier and the face was merely responding.

Later on the villain would get the win by pulling the tights and Gorilla would be screaming about the villain cheating and then ask Hennan about the blatant disregard for the rulebook. Heenan would answer by hitting his monitor and saying that there was something wrong with his monitor because the screen went blank during the pinfall or he would act surprised and say

"What happened? I was down here tying my shoe. Oh look at that, a pin. I wish I could have seen it"

:D

"I always liked Piper, see, it's a kilt, not a skirt."

20 minutes later...

"Piper you skirt wearing freak!"

My favorite (quotes may not be exact):

Gorilla: "What a flying forearm by Tito!"

Heenan: "That's the Flying Japaleno!"

Gorilla: "Will you be serious?"

For those with the Network, some of those classic Prime Time Wrestling shows are sooooo damn funny. I actually just fast forward through the matches if it is not something I'm interested in.

ETA: Sting supposedly to be on Raw tonight.

Top 3 how?

He's not as wildly popular or iconic as Hogan, Austin, Flair or Rock.

He's not as good in the ring as Flair, Michaels, Hart or many others.

The only thing he's got going for him is being in so many big matches, which, let's face it, is largely because he married the boss' daughter.

Disagree. "The Game" was good schtick for nearly a decade. And I would argue, he could put on a match with a paper bag and make it look good. Solid Mic work. Big fan.

ETA: I understand the "icon" rating above, I'm just saying as a guy who's watched rasslin' nearly his entire pathetic life. :bag:

I would put Jericho, Angle, Benoit and Savage up there as well.

I'm not saying he hasn't been very good. He has been. Even without Stephanie, he was still a top guy for a while, but he's not a top 3, top 5, or even top 10 guy all-time.

Fair enough. I guess I'm talking about a total package as a wrestling fan.

Let's leave Lex Luger out of this. :P

To each his own, but I have never been a fan of his, and his insistence on throwing himself in the middle of every big thing in the last five years - interjecting himself into the middle of the Summer of Punk, have a year-long feud with Lesnar after he came back, being Sting's first opponent in WWE, etc. - just gives ammo to those of us who feel like he only got so many big matches because of who he's married to.

Oh bull####. Triple H gets the crowd to its feet in any arena in the world and that's going on like 17 years now. Austin had him beat in maybe 3 of those. In the ring? Total package. As good as any of those guys.

Amen.

I would drag my balls over broken glass to just sniff the Bella twins, AJ or even Paige.

Cant tell if I'm liking the hype for the Reigns-Brock match. On one hand it really has an old school feel where they are kept away from each other and it's all verbal hype. On the other hand I'm used to the usual hype being built around brawls and beat downs.

I might like it this way.

There was a time when watching Raw was fun. Then that went away.

Then there was a time when reading Raw results was fun. That soon may go away, too.

This was a tough Raw to read.
