*** Official *** Rogue One - A Star Wars Story (1 Viewer)

Looks like I'm in the minority.  I thought it

was good, not great.  Loved the Vader stuff and the last act was awesome. 

Issues for me:

didnt really care about any of the main characters.  Except the funny droid.  Sucked when he died.  Thought Jones was completely pedestrian and the lead from TFA was way better. 

The score.  Meh.  Not Star Wars level

The pacing.  First act was painfully slow and didn't really set you up to attach emotionally to the characters.  

Liked:

the look of it.   Nailed.  CGI was well

done IMO.   Liked all the stuff they through in for us nerds.  

Overall 7.5/10 for me. 

 
This is everything I wanted from Disney franchising SW.

Leave the grand scale for the Episodes. Give me more of these "A Star Wars Story" to tell whatever piece of the puzzle a director wants.

Just don't stop immersing me in the universe, keep 'em coming.

Being back immersed into the visual universe during the events of the original trilogy was great. I loved seeing the original Storm Troopers, the original Death Star, AT-ATs, Star Destroyers, X-Wings, Yavin-4, and all the little inclusions and nods towards A New Hope. I enjoyed the scenes with the CGI-'d Tarkin, but felt it was a little off.

The fight scene with Donnie Yen's character on Jeddah and the closing battle and space fights were fun and well done. Of course, the Vader cameos and the last epic scene were my favorite parts of the entire movie. This last scene was what we should have gotten at the end of Revenge of the Sith, instead of the epic let down of, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

I've always wanted an adult Star Wars "war movie", and that's what this is. Of course, being Star Wars and Disney this can't be a full on R-rated gritty war drama. It tries but comes up short. Taking out the Star Wars of it, the movie feels very run of the mill and by the numbers, with nothing really surprising or special about the story or characters.

A war movie like this needs to have compelling and interesting characters that make you care about them and their involvement and motivations. Donnie Yen was good (notice I can't remember his character's name), but none of the other characters were memorable and the acting was very average.

Jyn's character is nice to have a female lead to balance out the all-male group of Rogue One, but I never really cared about her as much as I loved Rey in last year's The Force Awakens. Her and Cassian never really came off as having good chemistry and he was just another forgettable character to me.

K-2SO was good, but I wondered if he was just included to add a little bit of Star Wars fun to the movie. I would have liked to seen it, before all the reshoots and wondering what was added or removed. Was this a darker and grittier war movie, or was K-2SO added to bring some fun & levity, or was it just not up to par to what we got... I had EXTREMELY high expectations for Rogue One, but I'm really feeling disappointed.

I want to see it again, but honestly I just want to fast forward through the story and watch several scenes again. This may change, but right now I'd rank them:

1) The Empire Strikes Back

2) A New Hope

3) The Force Awakens

4/5) Revenge of the Sith/Return of the Jedi

6) Rogue One

7) Attack of the Clones

8) The Phantom Menance

This pretty much sums it up for me too. Took me a while to get into it. Something seemed off with the visual nature of the movie. The characters were kind of blah. The storyline was good, just don't think they did a very good job fleshing out the major characters. All the nods to original movie were great but it also somehow seemed a bit like fanfic. The facial CGI was weird. I guess it worked but also distracting. The last 30 minutes or so were done pretty well. I found myself nitpicking too much during the movie instead of just enjoying it. Probably reflective of all the reshoots we heard that had to do.

I don't understand your question here.  Leia does not say those words in IV.  Those words are specific to Rogue One.

Thus the :bag: ... as in.... it was done so well I thought for sure I had some how missed it in IV.

I loved it. Honestly I felt like it could have been two movies to allow for more character development, but for bringing up a full main cast of new people I think they still did well. 

I also think they did a nice job of not telegraphing the ultimate nature of the final mission. 

I remember how as kids (I was 7 when the original came out) we used to dream about future Star Wars movies. I don't think the 7 y/o me ever imagined how cool/amazing it would be. 

 
I love the people in here mentioning reshoots like you're some kind of hollywood insider. Nobody knows what those were for. 

I do agree though on the score. That was the one thing that underwhelmed me.

A whole lot of nice tie ins, but not forced, throughout the movie. Tarkin CGI was done very well, Leia on the other hand I thought she looked terrible. Cool ending nonetheless.

Eta: they had to kill off K-2?!? He had an easy out to fit back in as an imperial droid but they lit him up anyway. :sadbanana:

Well it was a suicide mission anyway. It was cool seeing him go out in a blaze of glory.

Biggest plot hole and my only gripe. They just wanted to set up A New Hope to the letter. It could have been left open a bit there. They didn't need to be so literal.

 
This movie was a 9/10 for me. It would have been perfect 10 if 

they didn't have Leia and her ship at the end there at the battle. Seriously why would an IMPERIAL senator be at a major battle over a secret military facility. They could have shown her ship receiving the transmission in another sector or something.

Otherwise the best I could have hoped for. I want to see this one again instead of feeling obligated out of loyalty to see ep 7 again.

So how does it make sense now in 4 when Leia says they were on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan. Like others have said in here, "No you weren't. I just saw you fly away from a rebel assault on a secret imperial base and I personally watched one of your men hand the plans to someone in your ship."

Like I said though, minor plot hole but otherwise fantastic movie.

 
Also, this was the first time they acknowledged that the prequels existed.  Jimmy Smits making an appearance.

Eh, it was awesome. I don't need that level of continuity in my life to be happy. Movie was made 40 years later. 

 
Nobody has mentioned the fact that R2-D2 and C3PO keep their status as the only characters to be in every movie. That cameo was golden, no pun intended.

Little bit of a stretch to tie into ANH, but it actually gives more credence to Vader saying "you're part of the rebel alliance and a traitor... take her away" when they capture Tantive IV. I do agree it doesn't make sense for her to be even in that battle though. 

 
Was Leia only ever a senator though? Didn't she command some battles and/or active on the military side of the Alliance? I thought she was a bit of both.

Not when she was 17.  She was the legitimate front for the Rebels. A voice inside the Senate.

Idk I couldn't hear it because dumbasses in the theater kept clapping every time the saw something they recognized.  :rant:

 
I enjoyed it, looking forward to seeing it again. Interesting to see the varying opinions on it, especially in comparison to TFA.

Guy I was sitting next to told me before the movie that he liked TFA ok, but that "we've all seen that movie before". I was really surprised when he exclaimed "that was the best SW movie I'v ever seen!" when it ended. I really enjoyed the movie, but that thought never entered my mind while watching.

Not sure where I'd rank it right now after only one viewing, but I definitely liked The Force Awakens better. Rey, Kylo, and Finn FTW.

I dont't know, their cameo seemed a little forced (no pun intended either).

Kind if like they were throw in just becuase....but it is cool that they are the only characters to appear in all SW movies to date

 
Not that I think a movie should intentionally have a bad score, but it didn't bother me that it was weak compared to 1-7. I don't place these movies on the same high pedestal as the Eps. Same goes for the Story Scroll - save it for 8 & 9.

I think a lot of people will do the above and be disappointed for it.

I thought the movie was fantastic.  Great action.

I am old school so I was pretty disappointed there wasnt a scroll at the beginning after the "Lucasfilms" .  Just a minor caveat for me



Also maybe I was a bit too high or whatnot but I didnt really get the Forest Whitaker character.  That entire storyline just seemed out of place and just basically made up to get him in the movie.  Not sure how it was detrimental to the story.

He was from the Clone wars show. So it was another way to tie it together. I felt they captured him pretty well even though he doesn't do much here.  He is pretty old at this point.

 
My daughter mentioned that the trailers were different from the movie.

There was no "what will you become?" line from Sol.

There was also a big action scene with the team running where Jyn is clearly carrying the data device and K2 is right next to her and that obviously played out very different in the release since K2 dies before she even gets it.

yeah, this was a bit of a stretch.  This would have worked better for me if they made it clear the data could not be broadcast (expected massive jamming etc) and needed to give hard copy.  But the movie's entire plot showed they could transmit with out interference.

it also messes with a bunch of dialogue throughout ANH. Like when Vader says "Where are the transmissions that you intercepted?" (he knows damn well that the transmissions weren't "intercepted"), or when he says "Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by rebel spies" (it was ONE transmission, it was beamed to a DIFFERENT ship, and it wasn't done by SPIES), or when Tagge says "If the rebels have obtained a complete technical readout of this station" (he should know that there's no "if" -- the plans were definitely obtained by the rebels)

I agree but on the other hand out was a side story, so some things needed to be less epic to make it stand apart from the saga.  No crawl, restrained score, no large star wars open...

It did a fantastic jib of catching the spirit and aesthetic of ANH imo.

And imo, it's even better on the second viewing.

One of the worse Star Wars movies of the series.  I went with my 13 year old daughter and her friend.  I'm an enthusiast that really likes the series (not to the extent of some people), and they both loved TFA.  All of us couldn't wait for it to end.

I really think you need to have character development in a movie.  At the end I could care less what happened to any of the characters.  There was absolutely zero emotional connection to anyone.

I find it hard to believe that she accompanied the fleet just to collect the plans, when you consider that 1) the entire attack was unplanned and spontaneous, and 2) she had no idea if the plans had been obtained yet. Why would a member of the Imperial Senate risk death or capture just on the slim chance that she might pick up some plans that could have been just as easily delivered by a thousand other people?

It would have made sense to have Leia transport the plans under the cover of a diplomatic mission. But we know now that she wasn't doing that.

At the ground level it was at least better than all three prequels.

I thought the movie was fantastic

I thought that was fantastic.  This was the type of stuff Lucas was always afraid of showing for fear of hurting his toy sales.  You can't have a rebellion with out hands getting really dirty.

 
The fantastic end fight scene with Vadar continues to make me wonder why Lucas decided to make Vader and Obi have a patty cake fight in IV when they met.

You also can't have rebels murdering their (innocent) sources, otherwise the sources may stop helping. (Not to mention the decreased sympathy for the rebellion that would inevitably happen if the galaxy knew how deplorable the rebels really were.)

A guy in my group basically said the same thing last night.   We felt they had to up Vadars ability based on how strong Kilo ren was in the last one.  Showed Vadars true strength and Lucas never really opened him up like that

Lucas had a chance in #3 to do this.  It would be have been a mind blowing scene to watch Anikin obliterate the younglings and everyone else at the Jedi temple but Lucas could not bring himself to film this so we are only left with our imagination.
