Seemed to work out for ChechnyaI really think this centrifugal effect is Putin's primary motivation as to Ukraine. Ukraine would be a huge force for democracy, liberalization and independence if allowed to be fully free and successful, even bigger and richer than Poland. Russia must have a score of potentially independent regions which have been sat on by the Tsarist and Putinist empires and if they see a successful, free & wealthy Ukraine they will want that too.Russia Is Losing Its Near Abroad: How America and Its European Allies Can Help Erode Moscow’s Declining Influence https://share.google/2LUB0bPdXE79GWnWV
Russia's lone aircraft carrier likely to be scrapped or sold, says shipbuilding chief
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia's only aircraft carrier, the 40-year-old Admiral Kuznetsov, is likely to be sold or scrapped, the chairman of Russia's state shipbuilding corporation told the Kommersant newspaper in comments published on Friday.
Andrei Kostin's remarks follow a report in the daily Izvestia newspaper earlier this month, which cited unnamed sources as saying long-running refit and maintenance work on the warship had been suspended.
Launched in 1985 when the Soviet Union still existed, the Admiral Kuznetsov saw action in Russia's military campaign in Syria in support of then-President Bashar al-Assad, with its planes carrying out airstrikes against rebel forces.
But it has played no role in the war in Ukraine and has been out of service since 2017, undergoing modernisation in the Murmansk area close to where Russia's Northern Fleet is based.
Efforts to overhaul it have suffered repeated accidents and setbacks.
Asked about its fate on Thursday on the sidelines of a flag-raising ceremony for a new nuclear submarine in northwestern Russia, Kostin made it clear that a final decision had not yet been taken, but suggested that the Admiral Kuznetsov was no longer worth spending money on.
"We believe there is no point in repairing it anymore. It is over 40-years old, and it is extremely expensive ... I think the issue will be resolved in such a way that it will either be sold or disposed of," Kostin was quoted as saying by Kommersant.
Detailed information about the combat readiness of individual warships is regarded as sensitive by Moscow and the Russian Defence Ministry does not comment on such matters.
Russian naval veterans and experts are divided on the prospect of the warship being scrapped, with some telling Izvestia it is obsolete, and others saying it or a successor would provide a capability that Russia needs.
The aircraft carrier gained notoriety in Britain when then-Secretary of Defence Michael Fallon dubbed it the "ship of shame" in 2017 when it passed close to the English coast on its way back from the Mediterranean belching black smoke.

Russia will reinforce its Black Sea Fleet with marine robotic systems, warships, and additional aircraft, Nikolai Patrushev, the head of Russia's Maritime Collegium, said in an interview with the state-run RIA Novosti published on July 25. "In the coming years, the Black Sea sailors will be further strengthened — with the arrival of new frigates, corvettes, aviation, marine robotic complexes," Patrushev said.
Ukrainian missile and drone strikes have forced the Kremlin to relocate part of the fleet away from occupied Crimea, reducing its operational presence in the region.
Ukraine has destroyed or disabled at least 29 Russian vessels, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. Among the most notable losses are the fleet's flagship, the Moskva, sunk in April 2022, the Caesar Kunikov and Sergei Kotov, along with numerous smaller landing crafts.
The new mobile complexes include two maintenance modules and another for mission planning. The first are equipped with a workroom for preparing the aircraft's weaponry, two vans for attaching munitions to the F-16, and a crew transportation truck. The new system reduces the number of personnel needed to load a munition from 10–12 to three, making the process less manpower-intensive and faster. The second includes a mobile command point used for pre-flight briefings and aircraft coordination, and a residential module for operators.
Russia on Sunday scaled down the festivities honoring its navy citing security concerns as continuing Ukrainian drone attacks posed a challenge to the Kremlin. Russian authorities canceled the parades of warships in St. Petersburg, in the Kaliningrad region on the Baltic and in the far-eastern port of Vladivostok that are usually held to mark the annual Navy Day celebrations.
Speaking in Scotland, where he is holding meetings with European leaders and playing golf, Trump said he was disappointed in Putin and shortening a 50-day deadline he had set on the issue earlier this month. "I'm going to make a new deadline of about ... 10 or 12 days from today," Trump told reporters during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. "There's no reason in waiting... We just don't see any progress being made."
A cyberattack on Russian state-owned flagship carrier Aeroflot caused a mass outage to the company’s computer systems on Monday, Russia’s prosecutor’s office said, forcing the airline to cancel more than 100 flights and delay others. Ukrainian hacker group Silent Crow and Belarusian hacker activist group the Belarus Cyber-Partisans, which opposes the rule of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, claimed responsibility for the cyberattack.
There has been a significant rise in child casualties in Ukraine in recent months as Russia indiscriminately targets heavily populated civilian areas, with 222 children killed or injured between March and May this year and 2,889 in total since the start of the invasion. Given the delay in verifying deaths, the UN says the true number is likely to be much higher.

Ukraine's Security Service discovers mole in Ukrainian Air Force who helped Russia target airfields hosting F-16 and Mirage jets
The military counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has detained a major of one of the Ukrainian Air Force brigades who was gathering information to help Russia prepare strikes on airfields hosting F-16, Mirage 2000 and Su-24 aircraft
Quote: "The mole turned out to be a flight instructor, a major of one of the Ukrainian Air Force brigades. The unit where this officer served performs combat missions to intercept enemy missiles and drones and covers Ukrainian forces with strikes on ground targets during operations.
The investigation established that this agent was carrying out several tasks for the enemy simultaneously."
Details: The SSU said the instructor was providing data to prepare new Russian missile and drone attacks on Air Force facilities. He was collecting the coordinates of aircraft, their flight schedules and the order of their departures.
The detainee also compiled an analytical report for the Russians suggesting what he considered the "necessary tactics for combined strikes".
Quote: "Secondly, the spy passed on to the Russian military intelligence the personal data of Ukrainian pilots, aircraft tail numbers, weaponry and combat flight tactics.
To remain covert, he used an anonymous email account and secret chats in messenger apps to communicate with a Russian secret service officer."
Details: The major was detained after attempting to gather a new batch of information. He is expected to be charged with treason.
Background: In early June, the SSU detained a 42-year-old conscript in Kharkiv who had been serving in a National Guard assault brigade and working for the Russians.
There is only one difference from what is happening now and what has happened since the war started. What has stayed the same? Russian rhetoric of threats to the US and NATO over warning them to not do things that Russia doesn't like. What changed? Instead of US acting overly cautious, slowly feeding and slowly escalating or allowing more/better equipment to be sent to Ukraine- Trump is showing Russia that he isn't someone to mess with. It is a message. One that needs and should be done. Russia doesn't want a war with the US and it's threats are empty. We are just positioning ourselves to show them we know their cards and they can't bluff.Trump orders US nuclear submarines to move closer to Russia.
That's nice. Why am I worried this is the beginning of increasing escalations between the two countries.

I don't understand the question. We could do anything before. We are responding to Russias current actions. We move aircraft carriers or subs closer as a response. We could have moved them whenever we wanted, but why? Secondary tariffs has been floated. It would take an already crumbling Russian economy and pour salt on the wound. Problem is Putin has a long history of not caring about his own people. I don't like it. Feels weird to force other countries to make a decision or get punished financially. I'm tired of war. Don't want it. The problem becomes when your tired of war you take half measures. Half measures aren't best for the end game. I'm just ready for this to be over. That's the sad part of this. Medvedev has little real power and has a big mouth. He's not setting policy. Reacting to what he says is just a waste of effort. He's been uselessly calling for using nukes since the invasion of Ukraine.Medvedev throws nuclear threats around on twitter & social media like candy. Now they bark, we jump.
It is Russian strategy. Have someone like Medvedev that is noteworthy or Russian TV pundit etc call for nuclear war or set another line in the sand. They only have one card to play and that is nukes so threatening them to make the US and NATO fear them to not do things to support Ukraine is pretty much all they have left in leverage. That's the sad part of this. That's kind of my point --- Medvedev has been calling for using nukes since the invasion started, and they haven't used nukes. In a social media post, Governor of the Samara Oblast region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, confirmed the drone strike on Novokuibyshevsk, writing "Enemy UAVs attacked one of the industrial facilities in Novokuibyshevsk this morning. Emergency services are working at the scene".
Ukraine's Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) on Saturday reported that its drones hit the Shahed storage airbase in Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Elektropribor military plant in Penza in Russia, just as two people were killed by Russian strikes on Kherson.
Ukraine's drone attack on Russia reportedly hit the Elektropribor plant in Penza, which Kyiv claims works for the Russian defence industry.
According to Ukrainian special services, equipment for digital networks in military command systems, devices for aviation, armoured vehicles, ships, and spacecraft are produced there.
Ukraine claimed their first drone attack at the Primorsko-Akhtarsk military airbase in Krasnodar Krai caused a fire to break out. The storage and launch sites of the Shahed attack drones were also targeted, according to the SSU.
Videos of a massive fire that was purportedly on the premises of the Novokuibyshevsk oil plant in Samara Oblast were shared on social media.

The Russians say this special military operation was prompted by NATO creeping up on Russian borders. Also to denazify Ukraine, that's why they came into Ukraine with lists of people to execute (Izium mass graves of 436 civilians).Agree 100% it's a message, and one worth sending IMO..."STFU about nukes. We don't believe you and it's not going to accomplish anything." No secret I'm...uh...not a fan of this Admin, but love this reaction.
without getting political... I'll just say they are trying to find a distraction. there is no need to move these subs.Medvedev throws nuclear threats around on twitter & social media like candy. Now they bark, we jump.Trump orders US nuclear submarines to move closer to Russia.
That's nice. Why am I worried this is the beginning of increasing escalations between the two countries.
