***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (6 Viewers)

Unrelated to Euro's, but a good story. Last night I had one of those soccer moments I'll never forget....sounds kinda sappy, but I think it's pretty cool. Here in Buffalo we've been having bad storms for the past few days. Our game was scheduled last night for 7 PM, and when I got there at 6:20, the sky was nearly pitch black. You could see lightning in the distance and hear the thunder. There was a game going on on the field, so we started warming up. Around like 6:35, it started to pour, and hail started dropping (jellybean size...not big enough to knock you out, but they stung). The refs immediately cancelled the game on the field, and the teams left.Fortunately, the storm passed very quickly....around 6:50, the rain slowed and we went out onto the field (despite the fact that the game was cancelled). Well, it turns out the team we were supposed to play against stayed as well. I've played with some of the kids before...they're all from the Middle East or of Middle Eastern descent (I go to a really diverse school)....and they're the best team in the league. We didn't have enough for a full game, so we pushed the nets closer together and played 7v7.We decided to kick it around and just have a little scrimmage. Soon after we started, maybe 7:30, the sun finally broke through from the clouds and made these two awesome bright rainbows. Turns out the guys on the other team were really nice....I ####ed up an attempted backheel pass and apologized to my teammates....one guy on the other team said, in somewhat broken english, "your teammates should be applauding you...being creative is the best way to play the beautiful game!"We ended up losing 8-7 (I scored 4), but it was a lot of fun. Kinda cool how the game unites people from different cultures, and that combined with the playing conditions...it was awesome.Sorry for the side-tracking story, I thought it was pretty cool.
Cool story. :confused:One of the teams in our league is made up of workers from a German run company. Half their players are from Germany. Their manager/coach/best player is a fifty something year old from Germany named Bob. Even when Bob is kicking your butt he is coaching his players and yours. Great fun.

Our lineup for tonight's game against Romania:

Stekelenburg

Boulahrouz, Heitinga, Bouma, De Cler

De Zeeuw, Engelaar

Van Persie, Afellay, Robben

Huntelaar

 Thanks.Just one of those moments I'll never forget....an American team vs. a Middle Eastern team speaking to each other in Arabic on the field....and having a great time.

I thought Robben and RVP were nicked up? Why wouldn't they get rest over Kuyt who seems to be the odd man out when everyone is healthy? I really messed up my lineup for this matchday. Lesson learned. I will know exactly what to do next time............ 4 years from now :excited:

I had the same line of thinking setting my lineup.

I heard Villa and Torres will rest tomorrow and Fabregas will play up front. "GOLTV news" show.

Fabregas could be a great play as a midfielder who will be playing forward, but I'm going another direction with me wildcard subbing out Villa.

Just so we are clear:

Group C (Tuesday)Netherlands (6, winners) v Romania (2), France (1) v Italy (1)Again, top spot is decided in favour of the Netherlands, and second-placed Romania will join the Dutch in the quarter-finals by winning their encounter in Berne. If Romania draw or lose then that would allow either France or Italy to go through by winning their match in Zurich – the only way Les Bleus can progress. If Romania lose and the others play out a score draw, Italy would go through in a three-way head-to-head tie on two points as they would have scored more goals in the games involving France and Romania. If Romania fall by one goal, two goals or by a three-goal margin other than 3-0 and the other match finishes 0-0, Romania would advance as their head-to-head record with Italy would be dead level but they would have a superior overall goal difference (or in the case of the three-goal defeats, goals scored). If Romania lose by four goals or more and the other game ends 0-0, Italy would proceed with a better overall goal difference than Romania. If Romania lose 3-0 and the other match finishes 0-0, Italy and Romania would have to be split on qualifying coefficients, in which case Italy would prevail 2.364-2.250.

Oh and Andy Gray is AWESOME.
Very very  I am pleased Germany is moving on, the game against Portugal will be a clash of styles. The Germans still looked slow and are going to have to pick up the pace. I see Gomez on the bench and maybe Kuranyi getting a start. I also can see Schweinsteiger getting a start. Now we have to wait and see if Löw is allowed on the bench.
I just read that Podolski and Frings are doubtful for the Portugal match. This is really going to put a hurt on the German attack. Schweinsteiger has to start, no? And the way Gomez has been playing, well, that's just no good. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see Gomez start again. I think the Germans will need to play a very conservative match to have any sort of chance against the Portugese. Keep a lot of guys back and rely on Klose, Kuranyi and Gomez on set pieces. Kuranyi and Gomez will have a significant height advantage, each being about 6'3" and Klose plays well in too. Another Ballack rocket may get us through  :towelwave:Not feeling real keen with Lehman though, should Portugal get their attack going.

Gomez doesn't deserve even deserve a spot on the bench the way he has been playing. It is time to see what Kuranyi can do up front with Klose. If Podolski can't play Schweinsteger can take his place as attacking midfielder. Gomez is no bueno.

Not saying I disagree about Gomez being bad....but I shudder at the thought of having him as my only offensive sub in the event of an injury. It's funny because he's young, same age as Podolski, and in league play Gomez >>>>>>>>Podolski

Wow! Ribery hurt and subbed out, Red card to Abidal and France short a man, PK to Italy and goal for Pirlo!

eta - I haven't seen spoilers being used in here so I didn't. I apologize if I'm wrong.

I've only seen Gomez play in the last three German games, and I am not impressed. He may not be a great sub, but he is even worse as a starter.

agree. speaks volumes when the main argument against not starting a guy is that it will weaken the bench

Ugh, it sucks to see the Italians get through.

Thankfully Pirlo is out for the next game, every time the Italians have had a scoring chance Pirlo always seems to be the one behind it. Hopefully Spain doesn't lose in the first round of the knockout phase again.

back to the u.s. how bad is barbados supposed to be? i watched some of the haiti-curacao match the other night on TV and those two looked horrendous.

I don´t like Bayern but I am a big fan of Ribery. Was realy sad to see him on the ground yesterday. I hope it is nothing to serious. IMO he was the best player for France in the tourney. He and Vieira are two parts the french team couldn´t compensate for. By the way Ribery and Toni had a nice promotion spot for yesterdays game. Reminds me of the Jordan/bird Big Mac commercial link

It looks like a couple of very interesting 1/4 finals, Germany vs Portugal (minus Frings and maybe Podolski) and Croatia vs Turkey are the two I am most interested in for personal reasons. The rest will bnbe very good too.

they were ranked 121st but they looked worse than that. Conditioning was poor, shape was horrendous and very little skill on the ball outside of 2 or 3 players.I would bet a strong US college team like UCLA could have beaten them.

I know its hard to think much about WCQ in the middle of Euro 2008 but there is a pretty big game today in South America as Brazil travels to Argentina

Note that while it is early, Brazil is sitting in a very unfamiliar 5th place and a loss to Argentina today will make them have to sit up and take notice.

Question for all soccer fans:

Why do some players celebrate a goal by sucking on their thumb? Please answer this as it makes zero sense to me.

121? Wow i thought they would be lower. I hear somewhere that they dont have a league or players really playing abroad too much, just advertised the team would be playing and got some players for qualifying. Maybe some of us should become citizens over there and go play?!?

Because they can? In some cases the celebration has some hidden meaning like Bebeto rocking his newborn baby to sleep during the WC for Brazil (94 i think) or McBride kissing his ring finger. But most are look NFL celebrations, just that, celebrations and nothing to be read into.

Its an Italian gesture which symbolizes a lack of respect for their opposition. A pretty classless gesture, hence a favourite of Francesco Totti.ETA: they are biting their thumb not sucking on it.

Thank you. I've seen Robhinio do it a lot. Henry once, and someone on Spain did it today. Guiza maybe? Now that we have the answer to that, anyone know why Henry has given himself a wedgie after a goal before?

Carlos Tevez has the disturbing habit of pulling a pacifier out of ... somewhere. I don't even like thinking about it.

looks like four excellent games for the quarterfinals

I feel very good about Germany tomorrow and I think Italy is right back it this, although I wish they were at full strength.

In my pick 'em contest I have Germany, Croatia, Russia and Italy advancing.

I would not be surprised to go 0-4 on these picks (Greece was my sleeper pick)

Watched this at an Argentine restaurant in Queens...Ended up a nil nil draw...Pretty lackluster all around on both squads...Argentina picked it up in the 3nd and had the better of the play overall by a tad IMOThe Argentine goalie made a HUGE save early to keep them in it

The result im most certain about is Portugal beating Germany. I hate both teams in the Croatia/Turkey game. I wouldn't bet on it either way.Netherlands should be able to handle the Russians. They play a similar style, but the Dutch have the superior players.I know Spain chokes every tourney, but i hope its not against the Italians. Without Pirlo i see the Italians struggling offensively, and they are already struggling defensively so i hope Spain plays the way they are able to. If they do i can see the Italians getting pummeled 2-0 or 3-0.

I am not sure if Germany will advance against Portugal, it will be a very interesting game. Loew is suspended for the game, Frings will be a game time decision.

Last thing I read about Ribery was, that he will miss the next 6-8 weeks after a procedure on his ankle, but nothing to his knee

On a side note about sports and politics during the Croatia Turkey game:

From what I read in several international papers and forums, Serbian fan will pull for the Croatian team while the Bosnians will rout for Turkey.

Let's get some brackets picks in.

Here is mine:

Portugal over Germany

------------------------------Portugal over Croatia

Croatia over Turkey

----------------------------------------------------------Spain over Portugal

Spain over Italy

----------------------------Spain over Netherlands

Netherlands over Russia

I really want to pick Germany over Portugal. I would have before the tournament started, but Germany has shown nothing to make me think they can beat them. Portugal shouldn't have too much trouble with the winner of Croatia-Turkey.

I think Spain beats Italy pretty easily. They should be able to do what the Dutch did to them.

Russia is out matched against the Netherlands.

Spain-Netherlands is too close to call for me. I am going with Spain since I piced them from the beginning, which tells me I really think the Netherlands are going to win. I wish this was the final.

I'll look at this again tomorrow, but you are selling Italy short. They are always slow starters and I see no reason why they don't win this tourney outright. The hate for Italy reminds me of the Duke hate on this board. Just because they are good doesn't mean they will lose. If it is the dives that drive the hate you need to look at non-Italians also. English, South American, African and Asian sides are equally bad.Toni has done everything but score in this cup! That will change soon. The touch he had before Abidal dragged him down was almost Godlike. Look at that highlight and come back with whatever. No Pirlo = interesting win for the squad. Italy is a beast and the squads that play the pretty style will be thrown from the tournement. D wins championships and Italy is the best at that. Cannavaro or not.

If you think the Brits dive as much as the Italians you are sadly mistaken. Toni has been the most dangerous so far in this tourney when he receives long balls from Pirlo. That won't be happening against Spain. If the Italians can get by the Spain game, then i have a feeling holland may regret beating the Romainians in group play.

Italy may be good, but they haven't looked it, and they will be missing Pirlo.Spain on the other hand has looked awesome. Picking Italy is selling Spain short. Italy got tourched by the Netherlands. There is no erasing that. They got by a France team that never got going and lost Robery, AND were a man down for most of the game. You are right that Tomi has done everything short of putting the ball in the net, and I too belive he will get that done against Spain, but this game won;t end 1-0. Spain will win it 3-1. Just because italy has looked bad doesn't mean they will win, and just because Spain looks good doesn't mean they will lose.

I'll go:

Portugal

Croatia

Italy

Netherlands

Then:

Portugal over Croatia

Netherlands over Italy

Finally:

Netherlands over Portugal
