Could Chelsea be the first team ever to hold both European trophies at the same time?
Seeing as how CL champions are automatically in the following year's CL group stage, and they were I believe the first former champions to fail to make it out of group, then I think that has to be true.

I think that Bayern will cause problems for Barça with their wing play against a back four that has been mediocre at best. Barça in only #4 in least goals allowed in la liga, despite being 13 points clear in the table (they are +62 gf/ga). That doesn't bode well against a team that's +66 and only allowed 13 league goals in 28 games. Honestly, Messi has been keeping Barça afloat this season, and without him they are decidedly below their recent level of play over the last few years. They've come to rely on him and his skill so much that the rest of the team has become more role players than anything else. So, this matchup comes down to 2 things: wing play by Bayern and shutting down Messi creating in the number #10 shirt from the deep attacking midfield (where he's most dangerous). That last bit is easier said than done obviously, but Schweinsteiger is no slouch in the middle of the pitch, and if the CBs for Bayern keep up their disciplined play, Schweiny and his central midfield partner combined with those CBs could shut Messi down enough to generate the attacking momentum.

This will definitely be the set of games to watch during the Semis. I think RM handles Dortmund easily on aggregate.

For me this is the matchup of the tournament. Yeah, El Clasico is always fun, but I think these are the top two teams.

I think that there's 3 really, with RM in the mix. They have the ability to beat anyone, anywhere and can counter like no other team on the planet. And I say that as an avowed RM hater.

:goodposting:RM has looked pretty sharp lately, esp. With the ascendance of Varane. As long as mou doesn't do anything crazy like play Essien at LB again, they should be fine.

Not sure if this is sarcastic or not.

They are drawing dead if Alves continues to shirk defense the way he's been doing. He stays home against CR7, but ribery is not exactly chopped liver.

Nice little feature on Matt LeTissier on Grantland. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9164256/matt-le-tissier-comes-retirement

He's a guy I literally only know from XX Greatest Goal Compilations. The one linked in the article achieves the coveted Scooby SickNasty Seal of Approval.
Hell of a goal :tebow:

Tangent: WTH sort of writer can you be if you don't know what "bailiwick" means?
Well if Brian Phillips doesn't know what it means then apparently a pretty damn good one. He's an Okie btw.

Someone paid off a linesman. Two awful back-to-back calls give Arsenal the win.
I'll buy the Walcott offside non-call, but that absolutely was the right call on the penalty.

Giroud was in a scoring position, his shirt was stretched to its limit, and is a big guy who was ultimately brought down like a sack of potatoes.

The linesman's line of sight could see the ridiculous shirt stretch, while the referee could not.

It's really not all that debateable.

Oh, it's debateable. I actually agreed with the call, but when it happens against your team (or for the team you are rooting against), it always sucks, because this type of shirt pulling happens on just about every single corner kick in a tightly contested game. I remember one of these pk's called against Vidic a few years back and was in shock (even happened at OT).

To me, I thought the call was tough because of just how late of the game it was called. Sure, a penalty called in the 3rd minute, should be called in the 90th minute, but that's just simply not the case, you should let the teams on the field determine the outcome. Further, the call was made by a side referee, not the field referee, which just stokes that much more fuel on the fire.

Really has to burn Spurs fans pretty bad.

FSC doing its worst again today. I purposefully didn't watch the early game because I didn't want to see a QPR score. I tune in 5 minutes after the start of the 11:00 a.m. broadcast. They are getting ready to show the results from the early games but Stone says they are not going to show the Everton-QPR score since it was coming up next. Great, it looks like they've been listening to the complaints. So what do they go ahead and do next? They show the bottom of the table and Stone says "QPR remains second to last because of its loss." WTMF!

VanPersie, wtf with that celebration after a pk?

act like you've been there before, and won some silverware before like with Arsenal

His first goal for twelve and a half hours, or over eight games. Any port in a storm, I'm not surprised he was pleased.

Atlético smashed Granada today 5-0. Looks like they aren't giving up on winning 2nd. With RM still in CL and the copa, there's a chance my Atleti can take them in one of those two.

That City-Chelsea match was very fun to watch.
Yes it was. It looked like it was going to be a snoozer once City got the second goal but it turned into a heck of a match. I had no dog in the fight so there was a lot of great play to cheer for.

The US U-17's are currently crapping the bed against Honduras in the do or die qualification match for the U-17 World Cup. Down 3-1 in the second half
Just finished this crapfest. US looked dominant the first 30. Looked like total unimagitive #### the secind half. Worse subs even ever seen too. That coach better have been fired before he made it back to the locker room. He subbed out the best player on the feild and left the potentially best player on the bench.

I watched much of the U-17 match as well. I don't know what to say. I'm not sure it was coaching. The US looked better on the ball, but the back four (which had seemed to be a strength) really struggled with direct running. I thought two players showed a lot of promise. Shaq Moore (who may have been getting by on athleticism, but who looked like the most atheltic guy on the field), and Sonora. Obviously we have no idea how Junior Flores would have done, but the problem didn't really appear to be lack of comfort on the ball.

I think that age of development is just a crap shoot. A bad finishing day or a lack of concentration can happen so easily that I'm not sure you can draw much from it.

That was the biggest positive for me. None of them panicked on the ball. Soñora looked especially confident and made great turns. He is playing in Argentina right now and is eligible for both National teams, so I am trying not to get my hopes up on him too much. I was really disappointed in Baird. He looked much worse than in the Haiti game (only saw Highlights of Guat). I also was really liking the goalie until he let 3 in. Not sure he can be blames for all of them. I'll defer to people with better eyes for that stuff, but can't really praise him right after losing 3-1 either.

Still, this is the first time in history that we didn't qualify for this tournament. You have to fire the coach.

In other kids news:

Ben Lederman's contract at La Masia is supposedly up soon and rumor is he will be resigned. :fingerscrossed:

Haha, awful.

Was anyone watching the Portland/San Jose game last night when Alan Gordon apparently called Will Johnson some kind of homophobic slur on TV? I watched the first half, decent action, but missed the second half.
