I didn't start following until recently so don't know what's the backstory.

Can I get a Cliff's on the hate for Mourinho?
Success often breeds jealousy and contempt in football. Certainly its a huge compliment for Barca fans to be happy to see Jose leave Spain. I'm sure fans of United, City, Arsenal and Spurs are not so happy.

It's pretty delusional to think his "success" is the reason he loathed rather than his douchy behavior or #### like attacking another coach. Not like he had too much success in Madrid anyways. Sounds like he is back where he belongs though.

Although everyone knows he's coming back, the Premier League post about Mourinho signing with Chelsea was premature and has been taken down.

He's got a huge ego, but luckily Stamford Bridge has been retrofitted to fit Abramovich's ego

I far prefer him to Rafa, and he has had success at Chelsea before

Given the available options, and the unique circumstances at Chelsea, I think he was the best choice

Now can we please recall Lukaku?

I'm kind of sad to see Tony Pulis go, although he's certainly had enough time in the job. Styles make fights and Pulis and Big Sam are the only two top-tier managers who favor old-fashioned direct soccer. I'm an old Wimbledon fan so my idea of what's beautiful are different.

Twenty teams stringing short passes together with varying degrees of success is almost as boring as twenty teams chucking long balls. Variety is good and there was no mistaking Pulis' Stoke teams while you were watching them.

Mark Hughes is a horrible replacement. He's a retread who's ruined clubs with a lot more resources than the Potters.
Preach, Brother
If I don't stand up for outdated, negative, unsuccessful tactics, who will?
This guy.

I don't know about that incident and I watch very little Spanish football, but there's no question that Mourinho is one of the most successful coaches in the game currently if not the most successful. I believe his Madrid teams set several records and won a few cups, so its hard to deny he had success there as well. He inspires an extreme level of support from his players and fans. I think Madrid fans would be very disappointed if Barca's president had expressed love and respect for Mourinho this week rather than taking the approach he did. I personally was hoping Abramovich would go in a different direction, but I do think most Chelsea fans are happy now as Mourinho's CFC teams were the best most of us have seen at Chelsea in our lifetimes.

Real's fans don't need to read statements by Rosell to be disappointed. One league and one CdR in three years is a poor return on the circus he created. There certainly isn't extreme support from the fans and players he is leaving behind.

I can't speak for Real fans, but I think the way he's deadly with Iker this season would make them pretty happy he's gone. Plus they didn't win nearly enough and got whooped by Barça a bunch of times in those 3 seasons.

He's leaving behind a poisoned locker room and not much hardware.

That's exactly why I am sad to see him go. For all his tactical acumen, he has been an enormous metastasizing cancer for the Merengues. It was enjoyable to watch this "savior" that Real paid so much to and for absolutely attempt to ruin the club from within.

Good run by Jozy but a magnificent first time ball by Zusi. And not to over react, but the US is just infinitely better when Bradley. Update, Ter Stegen whoops.
Definitely, he and Dempsey are the core of this team.
I'd add Jones as a critical player for the US's success. His play adds an energy and maturity to the US midfield.
:goodposting:

totally agree about Jones. When he and Caillou are in the MF with Dempsey in front of them, the US plays their best.

So yeah, Jozy had a good game. But for me, the difference between this one and against Belgium was mostly about service. I mentioned that he was making a lot of slippery, smart runs against Belgium but getting starved- I feel like I've been seeing that a bit too much when he plays for the US. this time Jones, Evans and Zusi were all finding him as slipped between the back four. Now- a lot of that in the first half was IMO because Germany was playing far too casually defensively in the MF and giving our guys space... but I"ll take it.

Such a difference with Bradley in there helping the MF mainting their shape... him and Jones particualrly when partnered. No Bradley, no shape and good teams like Belgium and the better CONCACAF teams carve up the US MF. Man- you can tell Jones was pumped to play aginst his countrymen... he was so aggressive offensively- finding some great seams with his passes. I feel like he's been consistently the main guy to find the killer pass up front. I hope we see this Jones and not crazy-try-to-do-too-much Jones as we do in a lot of regional games.

I've never got Evans- but he played so smart today, especially given he was out of position. An interesting wrinkle to the back line, which still seems too easily unlocked: beat too easily by diagonal balls between the center two and the outside backs and by players slipping into the space just in front of them (albeit an issue between them and the MFs). Also didn't like the understanding on 2nd balls- quick teams like Jamaica will kill them if they can't figure those things out.

DMB started horribly- poor touch, over aggressive and getting beat on the tackle, but got his feet under him and played decently IMO. Castillo started with some great touches and just nosedived. No mas.

Zusi had a much better game- he still lacks the quickness of thought with the ball that the European based players have, but he shows flashes- also very commited to getting up and down the flank and hits some great balls. Davis has been more consistent, IMO, over the last two games and might have played himself into more qualifiers. IT was hard to tell that Fab Johnson was even out there... very quiet from him.

You watch a team like Germany or Belgium off the ball when they're moving the ball up from the center stripe- there's always 2 or 3 guys making hard, circling/cutting/checking runs into space between defenders just ahead of the ball, and those players are constantly moving/cycling around to help the other guy open up space if they don't have it... also finding the space for the 2nd or 3rd pass. I keep looking at our very capable central MFs and I just don't see enough of that. Dempsey gets in the mood every now and then, but Bradley and Jones are usually too flat and don't let one or the other move up to support Dempsey when he gets the ball checking back. I really want to see more movement and fluidity with those guys moving forward... he's fallen out of favor, but Torres was a guy who could consistently find those little slippery spots in the MF and find the 2nd pass quickly. He's obviously not doing what he needs to do defensively, but I still miss that offensive capability.

Demspey is a guy who is playing like he belongs on the world stage- he's always had that confidence it seems, but now he's got the class too- great goals, and great linking up between the MFs and Jozy. I'd like to see that whole operation a bit more compact so jozy and Dempsey can do more together... maybe today is a move in that direction. Jozy needs to get the ball when he makes his runs and he needs runners the way he has with AZ- when he's camped out alone up top, he's at his weakest.

Boyd and EJ were horrible today. EJ- a guy who has playing with a lot of confidence the last couple years since coming back to MLS- just looked scared to do anything other 2-touch. Germany was giving him soooo much space and he only took advantage of it once- taking a shot. Also regressed with his choices of runs. I wonder if JK was on him when he came in to play quick and simple... too bad if so. EJ is a guy who has been showing me that he's capable of breaking a team down by hodling up play, taking guys on or making strong diagonal runs... he did none of that today. Boyd... woof. Poor decisions, poor runs, poor touch- did not help himself with those two games. Maybe it's time to get Aguidllo back in camp.

Agree on Mou being a good thing for Barca. RM could be frightening next year with the right coach and a fairly sane locker room. That said, I have a feeling RM re-captures the league next year. Vilanova is no Pep, and the Thiago situation is most indicative of that. Especially Vilanova saying that a) he didn't know about the 60% clause and b) Barca wouldn't offer him a raise to stay.

To play devil's advocate (a phrase that seems really appropriate when talking about Mourinho), Real Madrid has been an underachieving club with a circus atmosphere for a decade. You can't blame everything on The Special One. He won a league title and a cup while Barca was at the height of its power, and he took Real to 3 straight CL semifinals after 6 years of going out in the first knockout round.

I wouldn't call his tenure a success, but it's not really a failure, either. RM isn't any worse off than when he took over.
