Not normally a fan of the whole "soccer is so strange" humor, but the NBCSports promos with Jason Sudekis making fun of Americans are pretty funny.

"Wales? Is that a different country?"

"Yes and no."

"How many countries are IN this country!"
And what's up with Spurs getting all this publicity? The HBO show, Times Square ad, and now this.
NBC clearly chose them.

Family Tree is just serendipity to the degree that the 52 people who watched it was publicity. I did enjoy when the kids called him Tony Adams when he was in the horse costume.

I think it's built around Gareth Bale, and they play attractive, attacking footy, but it's going to be hilarious if Bale goes off to RM.

So it appears that Arsenal lacks a good finisher and also a good holding CM who can help the CB's on the counter when the FB's are really far forward.

Why didn't we see this before!
I was just going to ##### about Podolski blundering a great pass in the box a few minutes ago and then Giroud just ####### one up, then Giroud nails a bicycle off a corner.

Giroud - 1

Higuain - 0

:coffee:

Off a deflection, but yeah.
Much better second half and a deserved draw all in all.

I thought it was great when he talked about being chased down the street by Arsenal fans, only to reveal that they were, in fact, 9 years old.

"Well, we were on their turf."

I guess Spurs need to sell Bale:

Spurs’ Roberto Soldado traveled in a budget airline on way to LondonIf reports in Metro are to be believed, Tottenham brought their new signing Roberto Soldado to the club in London on a Ryanair flight, a British low-cost airline. The Spaniard had cost chairman Daniel Levy £26m.

With that signing he also became Tottenham’s most expensive buy ever. Mostly, all big name footballers travel in first class or even a business class, but here was Spur’s most valuable asset turning up in a budget airline to the amusement of everyone.

The 28-year-old arrived in London for a medical before signing a deal at White Hart Lane. Surely, Soldado will be hoping for a better treatment when Spurs participate in Europa League later this month.

Apparently there is some controversy on Sounders just being able to sign Dempsey without him going through an MLS process (allocation?). Can anyone break that down for us :coffee: people ?

Ted?

Sounders have the #2 pick the MLS draft/allocation/blind bid FA/FCFS or whatever it's called.

So yeah, they need to work something out with the team that has the #1 pick.

...which is Portland. Hard to believe they'd be too eager to help Seattle out. Twitter is also saying that the Sounders were the only club (European or otherwise) willing to pay $9 million and Dempsey will reportedly make up to 32 million over four years in Seattle, so financially it was a really good move for Clint.

I'm pretty ambivalent about it from a USMNT perspective. This is in all likelihood his last cycle, so I don't think it matters too much where he plays over the next 10 months or so until the national team gets together.

There's been some murmurings over the years that DPs may not be subject to the allocation order which would clear the way for Seattle.

It's also possible that Portland with the top spot simply wasn't willing to agree to Dempsey's and Spurs' terms ($41 million between the transfer fee and salary) so the allocation moves down the list to the Sounders, who were willing to pony up.

Either way, moves this big tend to fall under a "for the good of the league" catch all where rules can and do get bent.

You're probably right. If that's where Dempsey wants to go, MLS is going to make sure that where he ends up.

Now if only we could get Luis Suarez to transfer to the FIRE!

And my first theory was the correct one - the allocation order does not apply to DPs. From a statement just released by the league

"For new players signed by an MLS club as a Designated Player, the allocation process does not apply. Examples of this include previous high profile player signings like David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane and US national team player Claudio Reyna when he signed with New York."

Gonzalezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy hell... Dempsey is a Sounder.
I'm numb. I'm sick. I'm excited. I don't know wtf I am. He never should have left Fulham. But $32MM over 4 years and guaranteed starts ain't too shabby for him.

It should have been the FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cosmos with a last second desrved winner. 2-1.. well organised, good team shape, and enough extra feet with higher level of class. Not a thing of beauty, bit will definitwly follow.

Drogba has to be the most frustrating player to watch ever. You can see that if he feels like it, Ray Lewis couldn't bring him down. Then when he sees a chace for a call he flys through the air when the wind picks up.

....and he just scored.

He's an unbelievable combination of size, athletic ability and technical skill. Even at 35 years old he looks elite. Simply amazing.

Where you been? Missed your Nats analysis.
Been busy and just not in the FFA mindset... except for the Gold Cup, but the busy won out.

I pretty much had one thought about the US in the Gold Cup- every player bought into the formation and team shape, which was as positive and consisent as I've ever seen from the US. Kudos to Klinsmann for installing a more attack minded 4-4-2, and to the players to work hard as a unit to help support it. Their shape denied the opposition any room on the dribble or passing lanes defensively, and allowed the US to get into the attack with numbers easily ("easily" after working hard). Other than EJ and LD, I didn't see anybody at the next level, but yeah- an entire teamload of guys without holes. Our B team is far better/deeper than any other in the region (but maybe not without LD or EJ) and to a man, completely committed to the system.

Guys I would like to see moving forward: LD (obviously), EJ (Ditto), DMB, Torres (touch like velcro, amazing vision and seems like the only guy outside of EJ who can take a guy on.. but fades too much), Mix (surprised w his steel and workrate- decent skills and vision too... with Holden hurt, Mix's stock soars), Corona (willingness to get forward and go at goal, good skills, nice upside- but almost in the 3rd group for me), RImando (fantastic showing by him)

Guys I've seen enough: Beckerman (give him acres of space and time and he's Maradonna... just have to convince the opposition to do this), Wondo (Wondo's movement when he's not in the box doesn't fit this system)

Guys who need to show more: Parkhurst (he's close, but felt like he wasn't invovled enough and caught by speed), Shea (inconsistent, but still with huge upside- team shape suffered defenstively every time he went in), Bedoya (close, but inconsistency puts him here... love the heart and explosiveness).

I'm with both of you guys. Drogba's still amazing and can take over games like few can- but that compulsion to go down and roll around is horrible.

I think it's *ok* for Dempsey soccer-wise. Obviously great financially and great fro Seattle where he gets to partner up with his pal EJ, and IIRC he's also played w/ Martins at Fulham? Should be fun to watch that team.

I have a feeling Levy stuck it to MLS here though. After getting Soldado (albeit a differnt player than deuce), I was wondering how Dempsey would fit into Spurs' future. I think MLS could have gotten a lower transfer fee for him
