Barca wrestling with Valencia over Mathieu's transfer fee, but he's sitting out friendlies.

They're also trying to pry Juan Cuadrado away from Fiorentina to take Alves' place.

GK: Courtois, Krul

DEF: Stones, Vlaar, Lovern, Sakho, Oshea,

MF: Alexis Sanchez, Matic, Erikson, Barkley, Palacios

FW: Van Persie, Bony, Remy

Had this conversation today - the best MLS team would finish ________ in the premier league?
Bottom 3
I would say bottom period. If the best MLS team sacrificed all cup competitions, they might have a shot for promotion in the Championship but remember that it is depth where MLS falls apart.

No team stays healthy and/or on form all year and when that would happen and MLS teams would have to make changes, the gap in talent would be too much to overcome.

This will be a more fun question to ask 8 years from now. MLS is still just coming out of survival mode and is relatively very early in its growth cycle.

Of course to be fair if you look at it in the oposite direction, I don't think a good Championship team would automatically win MLS. Every single foreign player who comes to MLS is horrified by the extreme travel and then when you throw in field turf fields, it would be tougher than most would think.

Also MLS top talent is decent as the WC showed. You could easily argue the MLS players had a bigger affect on the WC than the Championship players did.

Does Azpilicueta play regularly now with Filipe Luis on board? Ivanovic become a backup?
More or less. Basically five guys for four spots with Ivanovic as the flex.
Yeh, that's what i figured. Azpilicueta at 5.5 is pretty strong. Luis will probably price for about the same, although it seems like guys coming in from other leagues are always a bit high. Alexis being more expensive than Hazard, for example.

Social Media discussing Torres back to Atletico for 16M pounds. Atletico holding out for less.

I can actually see this happening. Gosh I hope so.

Heard Lovren's possibly headed to Merseyside? I am not touching any Saints with a ten-foot pole, at least initially.

Schurrle's really interesting, but the possibility of a Willian platoon scares me a bit.

Kinda counting on Lovren being a starting CM along with Sakho this year. Allegedly a done deal this week. Surely that means Skrtel (hopefully) or Agger is gone.

I'm pretty convinced that Willian sucks.

What's the max for starters from one team? Seems like it was 3.

Yeah, it's 3. I dunno what happens if a fourth player transfer on to that team. Not like Flanagan's any great shakes.

Everything I've seen has Willian starting at RW. Even a 50-50 situation isn't great if you're spending that much on a mid.

I like Eriksen (a little more) and Barkley (a little less) in that tier.

There are some rumors that Fernando Torres's return to Atlético is eminent. Something like a 16m transfer fee plus a huge reduction in salary.

Personally, I think that any more than 10m is too much. He'd be welcomed with open arms obviously, and there's no other club with more patience that would allow him to regain his confidence. However, I fear he's simply not good enough to be a starter on a CL squad, and he may never again be that player we once knew. So 16 m is too much money for simply adding depth.

In any case, it looks like Chelsea may not steal another Atlético player in Tiago. They seem to have snubbed gun due to FFP obligations, which would be great on a lot of levels.

You know hes going to bag tons of goals for you guys, right? You could put Emile Heskey is that lineup and he would contend for the Golden boot :)

This is what the FAQ states

If a player is transferred to another team in the Barclays Premier League, and this transfer takes you over the 3 players per team limit, then you will need to go back under the limit when making your next transfers.

Isn't Tiago out of contract? I think he's basically deciding among offers at this point and free to go anywhere, right? Chelsea has almost zero FFP concerns at present. Even without the Luiz money, they could easily spend E100m or more this window with the new TV contract and shirt deals kicking in this season. I liked Tiago the one season he was at Chelsea, but don't understand those rumors at all. There's no room for a (non-homegrown, 33 yr old) defensive midfielder on the squad, unless they are planning to sell Mikel or Ramires.

I don't know what club could be more patient than Chels has been with Torres. The fans and club have supported him throughout, despite the disastrous performances in view of his cost. He may still have something to offer, but its unlikely to be what is needed at a top level club. I can't imagine him (or anyone) voluntarily taking a paycut, so if that happens it means Chelsea is moving him and eating wages.

I don't really disagree with any of this. I don't know the in/outs of the FFP stuff for Chelsea, but just mentioning the comments on FFP from here: http://www.elconfidencial.com/deportes/futbol/internacional/2014-07-21/el-chelsea-deja-en-la-estacada-a-tiago_165622/

Maybe it's the homegrown player thing that is hanging them up. Honestly, I hope he signs for Ateti as he knows the system, can still play and we need some depth at the position. He said he wanted to leave though, so some of the Atleti fans have soured on him.

As far as Torres goes, I think that Chelsea has been patient with him and have been looking to get some performance out of his large transfer fee and huge wage. Atlético simply won't (can't) pay his wages as it stands.

The common theory on Torres is that he relied on his quickness more than people realized. When he lost that first step advantage due to knee and groin injuries, his deficiencies in touch and instincts became more apparent. That said, he was always a great finisher at Liverpool as well, something he's lost completely (other than scoring clinching goals on short-handed breakaways at Camp Nou), so maybe nerves/confidence have played a part. He definitely had a ton of pressure due to the huge money involved + Drogba and maybe just wasn't up to it from a mental perspective. Personally, I would love to see him find success somewhere, but don't expect him to leave Chelsea and don't expect him to succeed at Chelsea.

Yeah, I don't know how you take a pay cut like what would be necessary unless you're out of contract. He likely won't play another game for la roja, so... make yo' money while you can.

I think that's always the great mystery with strikers. Some age through injuries and some don't. Injuries robbed Ronaldo of the other-worldly size-speed combo, but he compensated by becoming the best finisher I had ever seen (and by developing a sixth sense about where to be). I'm not sure he'd have ever developed in that way if he had stayed healthy. God help Europe if he had.

So much of Nando's game has always been confidence. Even when he was a monster for Liverpool, people wondered why Villa was better for Spain. But the Torres of 2008 used to take defenders on 1 v 1. He didn't strictly need service. And that hasn't been true for him for a long time.

From FIFA

In response to enquiries regarding the investigation into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups™, the investigatory chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee has released the following statement: “We expect to deliver our report to the adjudicatory chamber by the first week of September 2014”.

Read a bunch of articles from "reputable" sources that Arsenal have pulled the plug on the Khedira deal, as he is holding out for somewhere in the range of 150k-200k GBP/week.

But now it looks like a bunch of articles this morning are citing this report that both sides have agreed on 140k GBP/week and a 23m-24m GBP transfer fee to be paid to Real Madrid to help finance their pursuit of James. The report indicates that Khedira will be introduced officially....today. Yeah, okay.

So, basically, no one knows anything.

Fascinating idea Floppo. I have felt like this will be his last year.

But he is still playing pretty well and was just added to the all star team against Bayern. His scoring is way down but he is leading the league in assists with 10.
