So, was Howard Webb the most recognizable referee in the world? There are only a handful I know by name, but I have not followed as closely an many of you have.
In his time, it was probably Pierluigi Collina. I think he's now the guy who runs the evaluation process for FIFA, but he used to seemingly ref every big game. And he looked like a human corpse, so he was instantly recognizable.
It was definitely Collina, former lead singer of Midnight Oil.

In terms of recognizable, Webb and The Count are it for me. THere's another couple I recognize as having done big Euro games, but I never remember where they're from (I think one is Italian and one German).

Wahl has picked up a ton of tidbits with so many important people in Portland this week. I posted the Mix info in the Nats thread but here are some general tidbits that are informative

Chivas

MLS bought back the struggling franchise from Jorge Vergara and his wife, Angélica Fuentes, earlier this year, and I’m told multiple parties are interested in buying the club, which MLS thinks it can sell for $100 million. MLS president Mark Abbott told media here the league wants the new owner to commit to keeping the team in Los Angeles and building a new soccer stadium, with the focus on a central L.A. location. The spot Abbott is focused on is the site of the old L.A. Sports Arena near the USC campus.
The Portland Timbers are interested in installing a grass field as soon as 2016

Portland would be the first of the Cascadia MLS teams to have a natural surface, as the Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps all currently play on turf fields.
There are growing questions in MLS over whether Red Bull will continue owning a team in the long term

The New York Red Bulls have yet to add a third Designated Player as many had thought they would, and that’s in line with what some league people are seeing as a decline in the energy drink company’s interest in owning an MLS team. In fact, some within the league are starting to doubt whether Red Bull will still be involved in MLS 10 years from now.

Scared of NYCFC and the loss of fans/revenue, IMO.

But at least they brought hardware to NJ finally... cough... cough... supporters' shield...

The fabulous stadium alone assures that some one should buy it if they do want to divest.

Worst case is that they hang on to it and barely spend to keep it alive. Better that they cut cords before that happens.

I don't watch MLS, but I will say that when FIFA forced me to field an all MLS lineup in a tournament this weekend, and I went with Henry up top. He's still got it. (At least he does digitally.) He got me a nice hat trick in 50 minutes.

Do we really . . .

Strike that. No need to ask the question.

We don't care about your damned fantasy soccer team. There are perfectly good threads for that. Go away with that crap.

I think they're more scared of the NYCFC setup than the money per se. Davo and Roger had an interesting point in their podcast last week on how Liverpool and Man U are so far ahead of everyone else in US market share that even the top teams like Man City need to come up with interesting marketing strategies and how NYCFC is the outgrowth of that fact. It won't shock me if you see other teams (I know Barca has been rumored forever) invest in team as well. Plus as Citeh has shown its a good way to get around FFP and the home grown rule.

I'm not clear on this- are you saying the point was that US fans are bigger fans of the EPL, so will attach easier to an EPL associated squad?

I think he was just saying Man City starting teams in MLS and Australia is a way of using different avenues to penetrate the market since teams like Liverpool and Man U have saturated the more traditional ways of penetrating a market.

City are still paying all of Frank's wages so there's no FFP advantage. The home grown angle only hurts their development as that spot could be had by a youth player to gain the experience of Europe

Yeah- I got that. Wasn't sure how that point related to RBNY being scared...

How does City benefit on FFP or the homegrown rule using NYCFC? I've seen that argued (by Wenger, most recently), but don't understand it. With Lampard, City has publicly stated they will pay his entire wages during the loan. UEFA could audit the transaction to confirm it is at market value.

Until City came out and said they will pay the wages, I think it was assumed that NY would pay the wages (with City money), while City just gets the player on loan.

Is this what Wenger was complaining about? Seems pretty silly.
