True. But there's "loans" and then there's "loans to a permanent move" and this is the latter. Monaco had to get rid of him for FFP. You think after the season they're gonna want those wages back?

They're paying (for) Falcao in loan fees + salary around as much as they paid to outright purchase Van Persie. It's crazy.

Yes, Falcao is an excellent player and yes they can afford it, and no they won't go into administration because of it, but let's not pretend that that's not an absurd amount of money to pay for a guy who's coming off a serious knee injury and who's never played in the league before.

United, their imbalanced lineup and tinkering, newbie PL manager are in far more serious jeopardy of finishing out of the top 4 than most people seem to want to acknowledge.

I've seen the loan fee at 10, but either way that's a ton of money for someone coming in to essentially replace Welbeck.

 
Lol, at PL newbie manager. This newbie has won the Champions League. He's been in the Champions League final three times. He's won the Bundesliga. He's won La Liga twice. He tends to wear out his welcome, but he's won everywhere he's gone.

Meanwhile a newbie PL manager who had never won a European league title was brought in last year. Pelligrini won the title.

Agreed, I am always intrigued by the process people go through to choose a team to support. However I think its more rewarding to connect with a team that is far away. I'm a Bengals and a University of Kentucky fan but all I really have to do to follow either is listen to the radio on the way to work and have a pulse at work/bars/parties because there are always people talking about those team given the region I live in. Following a team that is far away is more rewarding bc of the amount of time spent researching on your own, it almost becomes a solitary badge of honor/obsession. I am also a bit jealous of people choosing a team now as opposed to when I did in the mid 90s. There wasn't very good cable/satellite/internet coverage or at least not that I had access to. Foxsports used to show tape delayed EPL games but really they only showed the top 4-5 teams. There was no way you could be a Sunderland/Fulham fan then at least not if you ever wanted to see your team play. The other way to see games was when ESPN aired the CL but again you only had the top teams to choose from. I chose MUFC not because I knew anything about the history at the time but bc Eric Cantona's upturned collar/swagger, Roy Keane's "I'll see you out there" attitude and Ryan Giggs running down the wing. The cementing factor was probably the 1999 Champion's League Final against Munich (the semi against Juve was pretty great too). I'm sure there is a generation of LFC fans that will point to the 2nd half comeback against Milan to win the CL in 2005 as a cementing moment and that's unfortunate but it shows the importance that CL plays in the modern game. Without family/geography ties to worry about I don't know why a new fan would pick a team that has no realistic chance of European glory. I know I am opening myself of for a bunch of United has no chance in the near future for the CL but I know they'll be back soon enough so I'll just hold myself over on 1999 replays and John Terry's tears from 2008.

It really wasn't that long ago that Villa was considered a big club. I'm hoping that whomever buys the club from Randy Lerner will have deeper pockets. There should be a decent team in the Midlands.

 
I don't really know how I latched onto Southampton, unless it was Adam Lallana's sweet buns. But even though he's gone i just can't seem to quit them [/nobrokeback].

You're right about the access, Andy. I never would've seen them just a few years ago.

You're off by almost 100k/week in salary, so add another ~4.5m/year to that. I get 6m fee + ~18m salary = 24m total. RVP was 22m fee plus 3m potential add ons.

Serious answer? You've come to a place where at least half the population hate United. For a select few (Smoovy > hi) they will think they are giving serious answers but it's almost entirely wishful thinking. Ask the Pool fans if missing the CL four years in a row prior to last year hurt them. Most folks have it right - United are in very serious danger of missing top 4 again this year but they are in almost no real danger anything beyond that. Look, they just signed 6 players and 2 of those just about any club would love to have. All those players signed knowing there was no CL this year (and maybe next). Money is still 1a for any player (and agent) and United still have that and if the Glazers did decide to stop spending they will almost definitely sell to someone who will.

If the same pattern happens for 3-5 more years then a more serious conversation could take place but the shadow of SAF is still very much over the club and I think realistic folks always knew it was going to be very tough. Pelligrini is one of the few managers to come in and win (big) right away. LvG has the pedigree to turn this around - he just needs time. He seems too prideful to not see it through but who knows.

I genuinely don't know what you mean. Bell claimed that folks are not acknowledging that United might not finish top 4. Not only are some (most?) UNITED fans saying that but there's several people trying to claim that United are mid-table for the foreseeable future or maybe they will go in to administration. It was just an incorrect statement.

But maybe I'm missing your point. :shrug:

Also, for the record, I've said United won't make Top 4 this season, and that there will be an exodus when they're not in the Champions League again next season. That's it. That's my way off base rampant United hate. Thought i could talk about world footy in here, but I'll just go back to listening to everyone around me talk about SEC football, and you guys can talk about Arsenal and Barca.
