Now word is that the Arshavin deal may be, once again, dead. Apparently he and Zenit cannot come to an agreement on a fair price for him to buy out the remainder of his contract. Because of the FA extending the transfer deadline, there is word that they may be trying to hash out a last minute agreement. But Zenit is set to release a statement shortly that the deal is well and truly dead.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand maybe, finally, this Arshavin stuff is over. Sky Sports is reporting that the deal is done, two and a half years, fee rumored to be around £12 million.

I have been fearful that this dreadful economy was going to start affecting MLS, specifically at the gate.

While I still think the league is going to see some diminished attendances through out the year (especially if Becks does leave), this article shows that it might not be too horrible

================================================================================

http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/61406

"MLS ticket renewals bucking the economy"

"Three MLS clubs are weathering the recession without any problems. Toronto FC, which sold out its first two seasons in MLS, renewed 95 percent of season-ticket holders by October and sold 5 percent of remaining inventory in December. Expansion franchise Seattle Sounders FC has sold more than 18,000 season tickets. Real Salt Lake, which opened its new stadium with just two games left last season, also is weathering the recession. The interest in its new stadium has put its renewal rate at 83 percent and new business ahead of last season, President Bill Manning said."

================================================================================

If Seattle can bang out 23-24k a night, which from their season ticket sales they might be able too, this should cushion the blow of Becks leaving. And with Becks playing pretty well by the reports, MLS might be able to sneak out another million or so out of the transfer which would also help cushion his leaving.

For those that don't follow the league too closely, this is the historical attendance information

City has loaned Jo to Everton? :coffee:That's an odd move.
How so, it helps both teams in my opinion. Jo is getting almost no first team time with City and Everton has only one striker on the roster who isn't injured.... and he has only scored 1 goal in a very long time.
:o I guess I'm used to players either getting a big step up or a big step down and not a semi-lateral move. It'd be akin, IMO, to the team who's leading the AL Central trading a player to the team leading the AL West...they're both playing for the same thing, and they have comparable talent. It kinda signals to me that City have given up hope of cup qualification this year more than anything.

I see what you are saying, but except for when the teams meet each other, it could actually help Man City. It's not like they are next to each other in the standings. And often, players on loan come up with phantom knocks when a match against their old squad comes up.

Just got a pre-sale notification e-mail from my local soccer league for the WC qualifier versus T&T in Nashville on April 1st. I was thinking about going with my wife and 4-year old son as I have never been to a WC qualifier. Since it's only a few hours up the road, I thought this would be a great opportunity considering most of them seem to be in Columbus, California, South Florida or the Northeast. I'm looking forward to it already and it's only been 10 minutes since I read the e-mail!

If anyone is interested, give me a PM and I'll forward the e-mail to you.

Pre-sale starts tomorrow at 11am ET, sales to the general public start on the 6th.

That is very cool. I am surprised by the pre-sale though. T&T typically bring about 500-750 fans to these games. The presales are usually needed for Mexico which could sell out the stadium before most American fans even knew the game was scheduled. What stadium are they using?

I'm not 100% positive, but I'm fairly sure that players on loan are not allowed to play against the teams loaning them out. This move made a lot of sense anyway. Everton obviously needed a striker. Jo doesn't have a spot on Man City any longer, and City are showcasing his talents now in case another team would be interested in taking him off their hands.

They're playing at LP Field. Maybe they are just trying to open it up to as many people as possible and make you feel like you're "exclusive" by getting in early. I imagine they are sending the same thing to every soccer club within 300 miles or so trying to drum up interest.

Keane got sold back to Spurs for 12 mil plus incentive clauese.

As it is, Liverpool just paid 8.5 mil to have him score what, five or six goals?

If Torress misses any more time this team will have virtually no bite in its attack.

You dare to diss David N'Gog? I'll have you know he's scored more goals in Ligue One than, ..., me.Kuyt was actually scoring goals at the beginning of the season, something he hasn't really done since his first Liverpool season. I have to wonder if it was because Keane was doing the work out wide. I think it's interesting that even without Torres, 'Pool was going pretty good at the beginning of the season. Once Keane started being left off the team altogether, they stopped scoring. He certainly wasn't getting goals, but maybe he was doing something else right.

Javier Aguirre out in Atletico Madrid.
Two weeks ago I didn't think they'd do it, but with two consecutive bad games in La Liga, I can't say I'm surprised. Unfortunately this team seems to be falling apart. They need some cohesiveness NOW if anything is to be salvaged from this season.

Looks like Abel Resino has taken over for Aguirre. He led Levante up from la segunda and has done well at that level. Let's see if he can make the jump to la primera.

He's a former Atlético goalkeeper with nearly 250 games there, so he knows the territory well.

I'm pretty sure a player on loan is not allowed to play against the loaning club.As for the loan of Jo to Everton. City gets to see Jo play and evaluate him. I think he needs a little straigtening out and Moyes is likely the guy to do it. Caicedo and Sturridge have past him on the City depth chart and Bojinov was set to get reserve action last week. If Bojinov gets healthy it'll be a choice of him or Bellamy each week. So Jo qould quickly have been 5th choice.City's only hope of Europe next season is finishing 7th and having the Carling and FA cup winners come from the top 4. A 6th place finish would require them to play too far above what they have been so far this season. They are 9 points behind Everton, but with a game in hand. They have to average a more than a half a point per game better than Everton the rest of the way. When you are only getting slightly more than one point per game through the season to date, that's a very tall order.

Liverpool is claiming that the fee was more around £16m based on fees and performance clauses. Regardless, they had no choice. Otherwise, he would have rotted away in his apartment, not even being named to matchday squads, and they'd be lucky to get £10m for him at the end of the year season. Lots of rumors swirling about front office issues between Rafa, Perry, and Gillett/Hicks. Not pretty at Anfield right now. Seems like some of them really wanted Keano (Perry), and some (Rafa) really didn't. Arshavin deal was confirmed by the FA today.

Independent reports in Italy and the UK are saying that Milan has offered MLS $20m for Beckham to be released. Goldenballs has his laywers reviewing his contract for escape hatches, but there's also word that he's worried about losing the hundreds of millions of dollars he had coming his way in US-based sponsorship deals.

Hopefully Keane can help keep Spurs in the Premiership.

That part is just a clause. There is no Prem rule that states a player cannot play against his home team. It is normally built into the loan deal. Similar clauses are that they can't play Cup games. If the loaning team is paying 0% of the salary they can also be recalled at any time (24 hours notice).

How could that work with the transfer window now closed? Honestly asking, I just don't see how this is possible. I think there is another month of free transfer/loan dealings, but I don't see how they can buy him. Then again $20m can make pretty much anything happen.ETA Just the Beckham part.

If this is anywhere near to being close, MLS should not get greedy here and grab this immediately. This $20M will come in handy in what is sure to be a tough year for the league financially with the economy. This $20M would go a long way. And with Becks being a bit injury prone, the longer they wait, the more likely he sprains his ankle again in a Serie A game and they would lose that wonderful injection of cash.

Yeah, the beginning of the season seems so far away. I don't get a chance to watch too many games, I mostly just try to keep up by reading online. It would seem that at the beginning of the year, just have Keane out on the pitch forced the other teams to commit to defending him. Everything I had read about Keane suggested that he played more of a supporting striker role, with the ability to distribute the ball well. Liverpool generally uses Gerrard in this type of role, which I guess made the fit of Keane a difficult one. But look, the day after selling Keane, Gerrard gets injured. I just don't understand how any objectionable manager could give a player like Keane so few shots but continually put the fouling machine Lucas out there (another center mid, I guess if Barry had indeed been bought at least Lucas wouldn't be out there very often).

Everton 1-0 over Liverpool after a 118th-minute winner in the FA Cup
Did you lose an avatar bet?
Nah...big Torres fan though ever since his time at Atletico....he scored those two goals against Chelsea so I made him my avatarIn other news, Beckham has announced his intent to stay at AC Milan. Apparently his lawyers are trying to work out the kinks so he can make the move permanent.

The first one was a decent goal against 10 men, although I thought Cech was caught out of position, something that happens with shocking frequency these days for a guy who is still often referred to as the best in the world. The second was a clean up goal after Chelsea had sold out. Yes I am still bitter.

The FA overturned the red card agaisnt Lampard nullifying the suspension.
 Was listening to the game on my Sirius. The announcers were appalled over the straight Red card.
Little consolation as it ruined what was shaping up to be a great game, and he ended up scoring a -4 as captain of my EPL fantasy teamI will admit that, at live speed, I could see the why the call was made and wasn't really pissed off until I saw the replay in slowmo.

I really think Cech has slipped. He seems to spill a lot more balls nowadays too. I prefer Van Der Sar and Freidel just within the EPL. I don't see how Cech still makes Best XI teams over the likes of Buffon and Casillas.

Some would say he's never been the same since he got that dent in his head in the shape of Steven Hunt's knee. One thing that makes it a bit difficult for fans is that Cudicini was excellent and still looks great whenever he gets a chance to play. I think he was Chelsea's player of the year in 2004 or so, and has always been better at penalties.

Good game today between Villa and Blackburn....Villa won though :goodposting:
:)Villa totally outclassed them. Now, it's time to see if Liverpool can handle Portsmouth. They probably can, although I think the story here will be how big the score difference is. If Liverpool runs over Portsmouth, then I'm convinced they're out of their funk. If it's close.... :goodposting:

I didn't think Blackburn played that badly, actually. They just didn't have enough on the offensive end

You're right, it could have been worse.Just from what I saw, Villa basically controlled things.

I am always able to get Barca links there. Other games not so much.

Liverpool/Portsmouth has been sloppy but entertaining.

And now Torres, on the bench for the most of the game, makes no mistake when given his first real chance.

for you guys with the bet on Crouch, whoever is on crouch's side needs to lose points for that assist to Liverpool on their 1st goal! That was the worst decision on a pass i have seen.

Did he forget who he played for???

Nice addition by Everton, adding Jo who was a part of all 3 goals for Everton today over Bolton.

That gives me a  now that they have a true striker back in form.
