I'm sure TSO will be a bit frustrated, but he can't be surprised. He probably was forced to bring Schurrle on a bit earlier than he wanted to. He helped change the game with his movement on offense, but he was exposed defensively. I don't think anyone can be shocked that City looked to attack down Schurrle's flank. Pelligrini is a tactically astute guy. He knew where the weakness was.

It was a fair result in a dramatic game where I think both managers prepared their teams well. I'd have loved a bit more quality to go with the effort, but I can't fault either manager for setting up the way he did.

it is interesting to watch the NFL be affected by both public and corporate pressure while FIFA which should be under 10 times the scrutiny just sits backs and laughs.

I get why Barça and Real don't want to share their tv revenue, but in the end it will hurt them as people don't want to watch 8-2 or 5-0 scorelines all the time.

The lower half of the Spanish table is really and truly fodder for those teams. I'm surprised they don't sit some of their stars to save them for CL play.

I think there are some new laws in Spain that will slightly curtail this starting next year. Even with the new limitations, they will still have a massive advantage over the smaller clubs.

Some lower division tidbits from the US

==============================

*Carolina beat the Cosmos 5-4, with all 9 goals coming in second half

*Sacramento beat LA Galaxy II 3-2 where Sacramento was down 2-0 and Sacramento player Rodrigo Lopez scored a hat trick in the last 20 minutes to give them the win in front of another sell out crowd in the semi finals of the USL Pro playoffs. Sacramento now hosts Harrisburgh for the championship

*Minnesota took over the NASL lead with a 2-0 win over San Antonio in front of a record crowd of 8,313

Four games, yet to concede.

I haven't watched a single minute of Barça yet. Have they been tested at all? Or are the other teams simply so crushed that they have no fight at the end?

What sort of changes has Luis Enrique implemented? Had Rakitic featured?

Rakitic has looked great. He's started all four league games so far in the "Xavi" role.

Enrique is playing more of the guys from the "B" team, rotating the squad pretty liberally, and putting a renewed emphasis (IMO) on pressing/possession, which Martino got too far away from. IMO.

I was treated to some Mexican league soccer when Sammyinho decided it would be better to watch soccer than having the NFL on in the background yesterday at 6pm. Was sort of happy even though I don't speak Spanish.

BTW is there any reason NBC doesn't show replays on those channels they show the extra games on?

Rakitic is the steal of the transfer window so far.

"Personally, I don't believe that the World Cup will take place in Qatar." from FIFA Executive Member Theo Zwanziger.
I was just going to post that. He's German, so it sounds like the German clubs want no part of a winter WC.
My understanding is that this guy has no support in the German FA, much less from other members of the FIFA Ex-Co.

well I certainly hope Sunil supports his stance, although we have not heard one peep out of Sunil to know one way or another.

As for the German FA, they are going to be under some corporate pressure to keep quiet I think because if memory serves, it is German based companies who won the contract to kill the slaves to build the stadiums.

Optimistic take: Sunil is playing ball and keeping quiet because a) because the US is the fallback if 2022 is moved from Qatar or b) the fix is in for 2026 is coming to the US.

And really, who knows how to use slaves in heavy industry better than the Germans?

Which is one of the reasons I have 100% faith the '22 will be in Qatar. I also think we'll get "Lucy-ed" again in 2026 vote (its going to be fun going to Mexico City or Toronto), so I can't wait for that to happen.

I think we will get screwed in 2026 as well because whom ever is cutting deals now might not even be around when the next vote takes place.

This is not Sunil's world and I don't think he knows how to swim in these dirty waters.

This to me is of significance. Anything that's not a British or US source carries more weight in this whole thing.

I must be the only person thinking the USA '22, China '26 is a realistic scenario.

Not probable, mind you, just realistic.

As much of a murphyist as I am I do not think they pass us over for Canada or Mexico. Not a chance in the world.

I do think FIFA wants an return WC in the States. The US has a minimum of infrastructure to build specifically for the event, and so people can just focus on making money and not worrying about the construction headaches. We also as a nation organize and stage big events well, and we don't have the security issues that other places have. That's all relevant to FIFA.

The other thing is that FIFA will want to cement soccer as a big deal here in follow up to 1994. The American market is massive potentially, and very rich.

Now we just need to do something about that pesky foreign corrupt practices act.

I miss the days when everyone assumed the refs were in United's team selection and not in whoever's they are playing against...
Does this prove that that Fergie had a big say/hold on the refs? Can't just be a coincidence that things change this drastically when he leaves. :tinfoilhat:
