How come whenever there's a whistle around midfield, the player who takes the free kick HAS to pick the ball up or roll it forward with his hands? Can't you just tap it to where you need it with your feet?

It's essentially a courtesy to let the other team know you're resetting the ball for play. I'm not aware of a rule which actually requires it.

He kept his body between the ball and the net....he was right on his back, and couldn't foul because it was in the box....Fabiano with a perfect turn and one-time shot....Demerit was in the right position.... Awful touch from Dempsey right there, poor decision from Davies too.
