***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Just got back from the bar/restaurant where I was watching the CC feed.

I'll update with the story later, but suffice to say that I was 1 out of 3 gringos there in a sea of 300+ Honduran fans.

So there was only 1 place to see the game in the East Bay and it was located at this pretty shady Mexican restaurant in the heart of latino Oakland. My fiancee (the Venezuelan) was slated to come with me along with another US Soccer fan. My gf's grandmother is on death's doorstep, so the fiancee flew out to Philly this morning to see her before she passes. The other dude bailed about 1 hour before game time.

That makes me the lone dude heading down there. F it, I'm doing this.

Get street parking right around the corner from the place, like 1/2 a block. Sweet. Head in the door right at 6:00 PM (7:00 kickoff here out West). The place is jammed already, standing room only. It's a run down restaurant basically cleared out and just chairs arranged. I pay the $20 cover and slink off to a spot where I can stand and watch. There was a security guard posted at the front (and only) entrance. I look around at maybe 250-300 people, and I'm the only gingo there. Furthermore, 85% were wearing the Honduran colors. Me? I'm wearing my Venezuelan national team jersey (dark red) and a bright red Atlético Madrid hat. Uf. Guess who stands out...

Within 2 minutes of being there, I get called over from one of the workers there. He motions to me to come over, and I think I'm gonna get the boot or something. Instead, he points me to an empty seat very near a bar/service area where he's standing. I sit down and look at 3 drunk central american fans. Now this is where the year and a half in Spain comes in handy. I make chit chat, and text to my friends while I wait out the hour until game time. I drink a Corona and "salud" my new friends.

During that wait, the doors get closed and people are stuck outside... it's simply too packed. People will be watching through the windows on this one. Two more gringos get called over and sit/stand in our area. One of the guys is a HUGE, like 6' 7" and 300 lbs. Just a giant dude... Oh and he has an American flag with him. I guess looking somewhat anonymous is out of the question now. The 3rd dude has brought his 4 year old son with him. At first blush this seems like a bad idea, but then again, who's going to mess with an unassuming dude minding his own business with his 4 year old son?

Game kicks off and Honduras is pouring it on. I tell the Honduran fans next to me that the US is getting lucky and the Honduras should be winning. The US was definitely outplayed in the 1st half. Nothing out of the ordinary happened during half time except some drunk dude wants to bet the giant dude $100 on the game. I have to translate this.

Honduras scores and the crowd goes nuts. It was a beautiful free kick too BTW. Better than LDs IMO, which was also awesome. The Conor MFing Casey puts the ball into the Honduran net with his neck/shoulder. The crowd is stunned. The giant dude is screaming and waving his flag around. People are looking pissed.

The US scores again! This time on another Conor Casey goal. It was a poor defensive effort by Honduras on that one, and honestly CC almost botched the finish. The LD scores a beautiful free kick, one of his best ever IMO, and us 3 US fans are going nuts. The insults then start coming as some of the Honduran fans start to leave. There were at lest 3 drunks that got dragged out by either their friends or the security guard (an off duty county sheriff). I think we've got it, and my ticket to South Africa is on like Donkey Kong. I'm getting text from my buddies like "See you in Pretoria." and "First round in Jo-berg is on me". I order another Corona.

Honduras then scores a sweet goal. They owned the US defense. Number 11 is pure class for them, and I don't know why they didn't play him for more of the game.

Ruh-roh... this could get ugly. They are pouring it on. PENALTY!!!! The Honduran fans are going nuts and I'm shaking my head.

Then the dude Roberto Baggio's the ball over the bar. OH MY FREAKING GOD. DID THAT JUST HAPPEN????

The US closes out the last 5 minutes of the game nicely. and the Honduran fans are pissed. The file out and yell all sorts of stuff at us, some of which I get, some of which I don't. Many middle fingers and many insults. The US fan with the kid slips out.

The owner of the bar (who is Mexican) has been cheering for the US the whole time. Partially to protect us and let the patrons know that there's nothing to be done with us US fans. He calls over the security guard to stand by our section, and the two Honduran guys I've been chatting with stand up and more or less block us from the fray of passers by as the crush toward the door.

The owner tells us that it's best to stay for a while, and even offers us beers on the house. Me and giant dude sit around and sip water while the chairs get stack and the floor swept. After about 10 minutes the place is more or less clear, but there are a LOT of people outside. Still not OK to leave. We wait about another 20 minutes as my 2 Honduran friends tell me their story and explain to us that when the giant dude was yelling "basura" on Conor Casey's goal (indicating that goal was ugly and garbage) some of the Honduran fans took it to mean that the guy was indicating that their team was ####. Ungood.

The owner is still trying to get us to stick around, even though basically everyone is gone. Giant dude leaves and it seems there was no incident. I thank the owner for his hospitality, tell the 2 guys that it was a pleasure meeting them and that I wish the Honduras team luck, and I head to the front door.

The owner follows me out, and walks me around the corner to my car, chatting me up the whole time. He watches me drive off.

Whew.... that was a close one. It's probably the closest I'll ever come to cheering for the US in central america... an experience I won't soon forget.

Didn't have access to a computer, so unfortunately, I was stuck watching Florida/LSU...not like that's a bad thing, but still.

Can we at least get the spelling right - it's CONOR Casey. Not Conner. Not Connor. CONOR. ;)

Dude....youve got some guts. Would NOT goto to the heart of Latino Oakland to watch a game against a central american team. Looks like we should have sent the chopper for you...

Good story Z.
+1Wow - interesting night to say the least. Glad you got out of there unscathed. I am amazed that it was Casey who helped deliver the US to South Africa. Unbelievable. In looking at the remaining qualifying matches, I noticed Argentina has to play at Uruguay with Argentina just a point in front of their neighbors for 4th, and Ecuador just two points behind playing at Chile, who qualified tonight. It is conceivable that Argentina could miss out entirely if Chile decides to coast against Ecuador and Uruguay wins.

+DosCojones gigantes.Still laughing at the running commentary in here from yesterday...

The only bad thing about that result is that Conor Casey is probably going to make the South Africa roster now...
Since we can actually play this game :wahoo:... who's the fourth forward to bring to SA? Or do they take Jozy, Davies, Ching and an extra MF, using Dempsey as the fourth attacking option?

I honestly think they might take Casey. He certainly helped his own cause a bit today.Maybe someone will make a Davies-like ascendancy and come out of virtually nowhere to make the team.Or maybe Eddie Johnson will come back! (kidding...)

Watched the game last night at one of the three bars showing it here in Phoenix...I was going bezerk when I saw that Jozy didn't get the start, I would love to hear Bradley's reasoning on that, but it worked out so not a huge deal I guess.

We needed Demerit in there, I thought his absence was obvious. Didn't feel like we really missed Dempsey, since he rarely shows up anyhow. To be honest I'm starting to feel like Holden is more consistent than him. Is there any way to squeeze Holden and Dempsey into the lineup? Probably not, but just a thought as Holden has probably played the best minute for minute out of everyone besides maybe Howard or Donovan.

Props to Casey for showing up...the first goal was kind of flukey, but kind of a veteran play too. Second goal, he looked like an in-control veteran but Jozy would have put that in the back of the net too IMHO.

That was one of Howard's worst games in recent memory.

Donovan IMHO is becoming one of the top 20 international players in the world. I know that's a bold statement with all the talent in South America, Africa and Europe, but he's got to be up there. He's clearly the best in CONCACAF IMHO...and he's exactly the type of leaders you need on your squad to go deep in the WC.

Boca hasn't been himself recently...nor has Bradley. Could Holden press Bradley for his spot?

I still like Davies.

There's always Andy's guy, Kenny Cooper.EJ... oof. He was at least getting looks for Fulham the first couple of games. Then I didn't even see him on the dressed roster.

Is it just me or has Howard looked a little shaky in the last few games he has played for the USMNT? I'm a big Howard fan (hell, I'm an Everton fan so how could I not be), but he just hasn't looked comfortable back there the past few times I have watched him play.Maybe it's just me. Of course I don't know who else I would rather have back there net-minding. :lmao:

:tfp:Went out to dinner and missed the innerweb feed- read the ESPN play-by-play when I got home and checked in here... ####### classic following the game in here- wish I could've joined you guys.
Same here. Looks like we missed an awesome game. Great result, though. :lmao:

I don't know if "shaky" is the word I'd use, but he's our best option, just interesting that he's tapered off some since his all-world performance at the Confed Cup.

Don't think Demerit has been enough a part of this lineup for his absence to be felt much. And hard to call Holden consistent when he's started once and seen limited minutes a couple of times... but I like him too. Hopefully Holden's play will get Dempsey to play for the US the way he does for Fulham... ie: he tries. What did Howard do that was bad? I didn't see the game, only read some reviews, so this is the first I'm hearing about Howard having a bad game.

That 2nd Casey goal was pretty nicely handled on his part- lots of room to screw it up, but he took every part of it well: great run, great first touch, great vision to see the keeper, great decisive move to open up the shot. That first goal was a lot like the goal the T&T guy for Sunderland scored against Man U- more bravery and bulk than skill, but it counts too.

And very bold statement about LD. Top 20 world-wide is a huge stretch, but I agree he's one of the elite few players in the region. But elite in the region doesn't propel him past the legion of truly world class players in SA and Europe (and even Africa and Asia). If they made an allstar team made up from a couple of players from each region, he'd definitely be in there.

I think my heart is still pumping from last night. That second half had as much action and suspense as you could imagine.

I have probably a hard question for the group to answer.

Does anyone know if a yellow card suspension can cary over from qualifying to the World Cup itself? I guess what I am wondering is if the US has to sit anyone with a yellow so that if they pick up one on Wednesday then might risk having to sit in game 1 next summer?

I know opinion of Landon have ranged variably over the years but even his harshest opponent has to admit how important he is to the US side.

I would argue he is as important to his team as any individual player is to any national side in the world.

Thats not to say I think he is one of the best in the world, he isn't IMO, although putting him in the top 50-75 would not be outrageous IMO.

I believe the rule is that yellow cards don't carry over from qualification to the finals, but a red card suspension does. I think that happened to Arsharvin in the last Euro Cup. He got sent off in Russia's last qualification match and then had to sit out their first two games in the finals (although that is UEFA, not FIFA, so there could be different rules).

Not sure about the reds, but yellows most certainly do not carry over.Good stuff about LD too- totally agree that he's as important to his team as any player in the world. BUt I think that once you start lining up actual players side-by-side, he'd fall pretty far out of that top 50-75 list.

Anybody else feel bad for Honduras? They've had a great WCQ run and at times have looked to be the best side in the region... add to their current political state and that's a team that deserves/needs to be in the WC. Hope they can pull it off.

TIm Howard looked pretty rattled at times, but it was mostly due to the piss-poor defensive effort I(and he) was watching in front of him...If the US wants to win a game in South Africa, the D needs to improve, quickly..imo

Hopefully Castillo and Jones get healthy and into the mix soon- I feel like those two will pay immediate dividends in the back. But it doesn't help that Gooch isn't playing for club... is Spector?

I'm getting a bit tired of his act where he jumps up and down yelling at his defense immediately following every decent chance. I understand that's all part of the diva goalie act, but its not like he's Gigi Buffon.

I think it's part of his Tourette's.

Strictly speaking I believe it's at FIFA's option that the yellows don't carry over. Generally they make a pronouncement that they are clearing out the cards at the beginning of the tourney (usually with some classic FIFA exhortation for fair play). That said, as a matter of practice this has always been done as far as I know.-QG

You may want to reconsider that statement. I was watching the EPL Preview show two weeks ago and they had a piece on him basically saying at this point he's the second/third best keeper in the EPL behind a fit Van Der Sar and Cech.Plus he was apparently bedridden for the 3 days prior to the game.

That was all after having been bedridden with an illness for three days.

Can somebody refresh my memory on when and how the WC groups are selected?
Basically there will be 4 pots of 8 teams. Pot 1 is the 8 seeded teams, Pot 2 should be Euro non-seeded teams, Pot 3 is probably Asia/CONCACAF pot, Pot 4 should be S. America non-seeded/Africa. The mix in pot 3 and 4 can change depending on what FIFA wants, but that's basically the setup. Best group is something like S Africa/Ukraine/African weakling while worst group is something like Brazil/Holland/Ivory Coast

Also, to answer the other part of LHucks question, the draw will be on December 4th. One of the ESPN's will likely carry it as they have the previous two draws for 2002 and 2006.

Yah, the only way the groups will be relatively balanced this year will be if the best non seeded Euro team, like Holland, gets placed with South Africa.

It is always difficult to compare soccer players since they all have different roles. LD is not a prolific goal scorer, he does not have great ball handling skills, he is not great in the air, his set pieces are nice, but nothing spectacular - so individually he does not measure up against the world's best at those skills. But, when he is on his game, he does each of those things well enough to be considered among the world's best soccer players. He can control the tempo of a game when he wants to. Where he comes up short, is that he is too inconsistent in his "great" efforts. Too often he lets himself get taken out of games (maybe I need to give a little credit to the opposing teams). It also helps that he is most often compared to other US players - which does make him look better than he probably deserves, he is by far the most creative player we have. But I think he would be in the mix to start for almost any other side.

i really can not wait till South Africa. The only thing that worries me is i could be starting a new job around that time. This may prevent me from taking time off from work for the games.

But I think he would be in the mix to start for almost any other side.
fair comments by all.Only thing that I noticed is that you considered him not a prolific goal scorer. For someone who has played midfield for the large majority of his national team games, I would think his goal rate is quite good (although his PK's certainly make up some of that).

I am most impressed by simply how many goals he is involved in. It is one thing to hold the all time US national team record for goals and another to hold the all time US National team record for assists, but the fact that he holds both simultaneously is very very impressive, I don't care what the country is or what the general competition level is.

I know there are some on here that argue that the next generation of players will make Landon seem like an after thought but I simply don't buy that, at least not yet.

Question for everyone, please respond and I will see if there is a consensus.

With qualifying almost done, I thought it might be needed to start an Official World Cup 2010 thread. I figure someone is going to start one so one of us might as well do it.

I know that starting one will ultimately lead to some idiots posting their thoughts about the sport. If I knew that no one else would start a thread, I would be ok with keeping all the discussion in here but I think that some one is going to and that will likely lead to much of our discussion moving over there.

Any thoughts?

this is probably my favorite thread in the FFA...no tools, good info and discussion....would hate to see us lose that...but I get what you're saying. Tough call IMHO.
