awesome- thanks for that, andy.funny- I remember Mexico's implosion and attacks against Cobi (Marquez... ) more than the goals, which were both pretty nice- especially the Reyna run down the wing, and touch back by... who? to McBride.

And my god- O'Brien. What could've been... sigh. Reyna and O'Brien- what do you think andy... has there ever been a better central MF tandem for the US than those two?

Löw calls time on Ballack

Frankfurt/Main - Michael Ballack's career with the German national team has come to an end.

The decision comes as a result of talks between head coach Joachim Löw and the long-time captain of the DFB eleven.

Löw: 'Michael shaped an era'

"Many young players have stepped into the limelight over the last few months and they have a great future ahead of them. The development of the national team since the 2010 World Cup has been very positive. After openly discussing the topic with Michael Ballack in March and following various telephone conversations thereafter, it was time we took a concrete position ahead next season's European Championships. I got the impression during our talks that Michael understood our viewpoint. It was in the interests of everyone to make an honest and clear decision," explained Löw.

"Michael Ballack was a leading figure in the national team for a decade and played an enormous part in the team's successes since the 2002 World Cup. He shaped an era and always put himself at the disposal of the team as captain, something I was able to experience firsthand at the 2006 World Cup and EURO 2008. His ability and fighting qualities were equally as impressive as his goal threat and mental strength in important matches."

Farewell match against Brazil?

"It goes without saying that Michael Ballack should be given an attractive farewell from the national team, as well as a massive thank-you for his services to German football."

DFB General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach added: "The DFB and our president Dr. Theo Zwanziger have been informed of the situation. We all hope to give Michael Ballack a worthy send-off with his 99th cap in the classic international against Brazil on 10 August. Hopefully he will take to the field as captain one last time. This proposal has been known to him for a while now and we hope he accepts our offer."
Thanks Michael

Yeah, I make no shortage of my love for Obie. What a shame god put so much talent in a body that was made of tin foil :( . He had so few games with Reyna sadly. Don't forget too that this Mexico game was the game that Arena switched out of the blue to a 3-5-2 with the following spread, and caught Mexico completely off guard with the quick early goal. FriedelSanneh Pope BerlhalterPablo ReynaLandon Obie LewisMcBride WolffAnd as a side note, Sanneh was awesome in this tournament. Playing in a position he did not play at club level and played very very well. He was all over the field against Germany. The US will need a player like this to come out of no where for 2014 I think.

Yeah Mexico imploded in a disgusting constant cheap fouling at the end of this game. It was the Boca hit against Panama done 15 times over. That was Josh Wolff that played it back.

In Soccer America's series of where the US talent will come from, they concentrated on players under 23 in MLS. Today they look at Americans in Europe who are also U23.

============

[uSA CONFIDENTIAL] For the time being, more promising young Americans are trying their luck overseas than in MLS, but breaking into the first team at a foreign club, let alone landing a steady starting job, remains difficult. Only two Americans under 23 have started more than 30 league games. For more on the young Americans playing abroad ...

Of the 17 Americans under 23 who made league appearances at the top two levels of foreign clubs in 2010-11, only Norwegian-bred Mikkel Diskerud (Stabaek) and Joe Benny Corona (who helped Tijuana win promotion to Mexico's First Division) have started more than 30 games. Only seven have made more than 10 starts.

Even U.S. stars Jozy Altidore and Freddy Adu have had a hard time holding down starting jobs. Altidore and Adu have started an average of only eight and five games a season, respectively, since moving to Europe.

The third foreign-based U-23 on the U.S. Gold Cup team is defender Eric Lichaj, who started for the first time in 2010-11 in his third season in England.

Timothy Chandler, who debuted this winter at German club Nuremberg, turned down a Gold Cup call-up to rest.

The next season should see how far along such promising players as U.S. U-20s Sebastien Lletget (West Ham) and Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim) are.

I understand the comment that it allows our most skilled players (LD and Demps) to move the ball forward from the attacking wings, but it basically makes the US poor offensively in the center of the pitch.
But this is what I don't get. In three games so far I don't remember Landon or Demsey attacking from the wings. They are both pinched inside more than they ever have which is one of the reasons Cherundolo has overlapped 600 times already. The formation at this point seems to be a 4-2-2-2.
LD crossed a few times from the wings, Demps pinched in a lot, so I get your point. My point was to talk of the ideal formation / tactics that I see. Perhaps BBradley feels that LD and Demps are more effective pinching in with the LB/RB overlapping them on the far wings. Or maybe there was space in the 'lupe defense there for LD and Demps to exploit? I'm not sure really.I hate to say it, but DMB (when he played decently) was the best on the wing doing what I described above. LD was good at this at one time as well, but we all know that Demps will just shut down and mot participate if he's left out there on the right wing. Maybe that's the reason...
It seems to me that when the central MFs play flat and deep, whoever's on the weak side (away from the ball) of LD or Dempsey pinches into the middle, unless the strong side wide defender is already overlapping, in which case the strong side LD or Dempsey pinches.I just noticed Pre's most excellent post- he's totally right... the MF plays in a more traditional diamond when given the time and space to do so by lesser teams, with Bradley or whoever pushed in a more attacking role. Whether this is by Bradley design or simply because of what the opposition is allowing them to do, I'm not sure. I'd like to think the former. It also seems to me that even with the flat-two in the central MF, more often than not they STILL allow a lot of gaps defensively, which is insane. I'd prefer to see them come out swinging with the diamond, even if it means allowing some danger in the back- it really seems to me that they actually defend better when the pressure is higher up the field, and of course it sets up their attack that much better as well. But the international game is more about not ####### things up and trying to get at least a point more than about trying to play appealing, attacking soccer. Meh. I'd like to think the latter is an option that doesn't exclude the former, but wtf do I know. And it's not really fair to compare the Mexican MF to the US- those players are all set up with the skills in their dna- ball and tactical- to play a possession game. The US has always been a more direct, quick passing going forward type of team. Unless they're playing against weak opposition who sit back in their own third and doesn't put pressure on the MFs, the US will never have an advantage in possession- even against "weaker" regional opponents.

Well the one silver lining to having problems in front of the net is that it does not look like US is cheating.

Three Gold Cup games are being investigated by FIFA for match fixing\manipulation.

Per Der Spiegel, Fifa investigating 3 of possible 5 GC games:

CRC 5:0 CUB

MEX 5:0 SLV

JAM 4:0 GRE

MEX 5:0 CUB

GUA 4:0 GRE

CR gets a PK with an obvious dive in the box, stuffed by the goalie.

Thiago reportedly wants to leave Barca if Cesc is signed. Free Thiago >>>> 45mm Cesc.

The semi finals in Houston (Reliant Stadium) are almost sold out. Only 3k left. CONCACAF has to be very happy with these attendances.
Wow - a well-attended international soccer tournament in the US? Who knew? Don't tell FIFA.:StillbitterabouteffingQatar:
:moneybag: talks.I don't want to sound racist or anything, but is it typical for Central American teams to constantly get impatient and take bad shots from outside?CR and Honduras going to PK's.

Watching some of the U17 WC from yesterday, Argentina v. France....the number 11 from France had a great goal. Chested a cross down and blasted it home on the volley. 3-0 at the half.

Y'all ready for the game today? I'm hosting at my disaster of an apartment (middle of packing for the move).

The US needs to bring their A game today. Mexico came back strong from being down a goal yesterday, never giving up or being rattled. The US needs to make a similar statement if they want to prove that they are one of the top 2 big dogs in CONCACAF.
