Yikes - the only good thing about tonight was the uniforms.I think MacMath is going to be a good one, and on the whole he had a pretty good game, but that howler seemed to kill the team's momentum.Other than that, I'd rather just forget this game ever happened. I didn't think I'd learn much about the Union tonight anyway given the rain and small turf field.Oh wait I did learn one thing - our new left back is a nightmare (the dude with the Fellani Fro for those of you scoring at home). Looked totally out of his depth.
I missed seeing Okugo out there. I really liked what I saw of him last year. The small pitch takes away such an important weapon for Philly as Williams had no space to move.
I dunno- Portland had plenty of space to move, and that Alhassan cat used his pace to find even more space (yeah, sorry Ted- down that Left Philly Flank).I just think Philly made that field a lot smaller than it was by not committing to getting numbers around the ball and losing all shape in the MF.Ted- what was that about? Was it a formation thing, where they lined up with the wrong numbers against Portland? Or were guys just not getting done what they'd normally do?

Great atmosphere at Portland though-funny, but so much of this seems forced to me (like the Elvis song at the end), but it's faaaaar better than than disinterested nothingness that used to surround MLS games.
Not sure I agree it is forced. It is not being driven by scoreboards telling them when to cheer, or music being pumped in (see every nba game for examples of forced atmosphere). This all comes from the supporters themselves. The supporters culture they have built to me is the exact opposite of what being forced is like we see elsewhere in US sports.Ymmv though since this is so subjective.
I'm saying it's forced because it's seemingly fabricated out of the ether. Yeah- it's not a guy sitting at an organ leading up to da-da-da-dat-da-da... CHARGE, but it doesn't feel like it's arriving organically either. Seems like supporter groups got together and thoughy of some songs (or copied them), got their double armed and scarf salutes down (or, again- copied) and away we go. That's the forced part of it... but I guess I'm happy with teams creating this culture like this rather than waiting for something to materialize... which never seemed to happen with the old teams.
I may be wrong, but I think this is how songs/chants are usually created, via the hard core supporter groups and then they spread in the stadium. The chanting in English games mostly came from supporter groups copying and adapting popular songs. In the end though who cares :) . Ten years ago a game in the pouring rain on a Monday night during the school year would draw barely 6k in some cities. You and I will both take the alternative, whether it be forced or not :)

Great little roller coaster for me tonight watching Arsenal pull out the win. Wow. Just when you give up on these under achieving bastards they come through. Great to have them catch my imagination again and remind me I'm a big fan.

Yah, they were at each other the entire game. It's the one thing remaining in Van Persie that I don't care for. I'm willing to overlook it though!

In the first half, I thought Pajon held up play well, and I thought Adu looked good when he actually had the ball at his feet. But Philly wasn't looking to find Adu and couldn't seem to match his speed of thought when they did get the ball to him (and on more than one occassion, they played a ball to him with absolutely no pace that gave him no opportunity to turn and run at his man). But I also can't absolve Freddy of responsibility, because he still doesn't seem to match the workrate that Portland's flank players were putting in. I think Adu is wasted on the flank. Nowak seems to give him some license to roam, but I think he needs to be in the center of the field. His best quality is the ability to make decisions quickly and I think they could accentuate that by allowing him to spray the ball in both directions.Overall the difference between the sides was pretty stark. Portland were a bit raw, but they were full of ideas in the final third, even when a lot of them didn't pan out. Philly looked very, very stagnant to me. Boyd is going to score a lot of goals if he stays healthy. Not a lot of clever number 9's who can make great runs while staying in the 18 yard box like him in MLS. And Portland doesn't need him to find the ball in midfield.

The President of NBC Sports Jon Miller was amazed at the atmosphere in Portland. Check out his powerful statement below. And note that this was not an NBC game, it was an ESPN game.

“I’ll be honest with you, I’ve been in the sports business, I’ve been with NBC for 34 years, and I have never seen anything like this tonight. This has blown me away,” Miller said to a media scrum at halftime of Portland’s 3-1 win. “I’ve been to NFL playoff games, and World Series game sevens, and this fanbase should be really proud of itself.”

When they're on, nobody's more fun to watch than Bayern. Absolutely dismantled Basel in that first half. They're fortunate to only be down 3-0.

What a strange ending.

Not that you can really process it all in the heat of the moment, but Mandanda should've just let them score rather than making the challenge. Inter doesn't have time to score another and Marseille still goes through on away goals. Now they have to play the quarterfinal first leg without their stud keeper.

Dumb, dumb play on his part.

Just looking at futures odds, the remaining teams from most likely to least likely to win:

1. Barcelona

2. Madrid (assuming they take care of business over Moscow)

3. Bayern

4. AC Milan

5. Napoli/Chelsea

6. Benfica

7. Marseille

8. APOEL

Quote of the week, from Basel coach Heiko Vogel on Bayern's 7-1 win over Hoffenheim Saturday:

"The margin of victory does not impress me. I have absolutely no fear that Bayern will score seven goals in one game [against us]."

I watch soccer occasionally but I wouldn't call myself a fan. Serious question, why arent cards given out for diving?
They are.If you want to know why why more cards aren't handed out... real diving is really tough to separate from guys riding tackles. It has to be a completely clear-cut case of a guy not being touched and going down, and not a guy taking even a little contact and going down in a way that looks light. Sometimes a guy goes down without even taking contact, but IMO, isn't diving- he's avoiding a tackle that risks his health, and bails out.

Spur's Christian Bale just talked about this in response to being called a diver:

The Wales international insists he is no diver, however, claiming that he only hits the deck so much because he is trying to swerve the late challenges of opposition players.

"If people want to say I'm diving then they can, but I'm trying to get out of the way and save myself, save my career if you like," he said. "It's a bit annoying (when people say I dive) but you've got people flying in at you, you're trying to get out of the way of the challenge. If you stand there, you're going to get a whack.

"You can see why people say you're diving but I'd rather get out of the way than get hurt, that's what it is. It's football, a contact sport, things do happen and you've got to try to be clever with it.

"I'm more likely to try to get out of the way and not get hurt, rather than get hurt. I tend not to dive."

Now... if you're talking about embellishing injury- there's a couple of things there too. Taking a whack on the leg or foot from a professional athlete going full speed is going to hurt- maybe for just a few moments, but it's going to hurt enough for you to cringe or grab the hurt area. But of course, a lot of players, embellish the #### out of every tackle rolling around like they've been broken in two. Or worse, if any contact is close to their face, it's hollywood time. Terrible.

it's just really tough to judge. If you are running at top speed and have someone just clip your heel, you are going to go flying and there's not much you can do about it. It doesn't take much to lose your balance in those situations and judging whether a player truly dove, was fouled (or getting out of the way to avoid contact), or just lost his balance can be damn near impossible at times. But most fans share your sentiment, especially when they watch someone like Suarez play.

I see a few Liverpool games. Suarez(sp) looks to be a diver. Maybe a little dirty to after seeing him kick that dude in the stomach about 2 months ago.

Haha. Didn't even see Prefontaine's post

He goes a little too Floppo for my tastes sometimes, but he's no Bale. IIRC, Bale leads the league in yellows for simulation (3)

:goodposting:Also- a guy with the ball is rarely going to be planted in such a way as to have maximum stability. As you say, they're going at speed with the ball on one of their feet- so when contact comes, it happens when only one foot is on the ground (other on the ball). Easy to get knocked off balance, and as Bale mentioned, easy to get hurt if you don't ride the challenge.I know he dives, but guys like Suarez and C Ronaldo play in a style that invites a ton of contact- IMO, they're both going down a lot and not diving as much as they're given #### for. But Suarez embellishes like a mo-fo- and I hate him for that (among other things).

I agree with all of this. I think most fans would agree to take this out of the refs hands and handle it on replay after the game with stiff fines to player, very stiff fines to team, and suspension to player. It would not remove diving entirely but would clean it up tremendously. Sadly Fifa is much more concerned about being the most corrupt organization in sports rather than adding this simple change into the game.

I asked the question because of the Suarez flop in the second half today. It was pitiful.
I didn't see it- was he untouched? Or did he just go into histrionics after a light challenge?
it looked like it was straight out of a christian bale school of acting :P Seriously, he made a meal out of very little contact with Distin who took great offense to it and was begging the ref to hand out a card. I think everyone knew it was a dive but it was one of those situations where actual contact happened and well, you can't be sure. But I can tell you, if Christo was defending him, Suarez would have known the displeasure. Distin is too nice, especially for a derby. I'd have laid him out and I'm a Suarez fan :bag:

Suarez is by far the biggest flopper in the epl right now.

It's very aggravating to watch sometimes. He's a talented player, but his flopping is tiresome. That being said, a lot of players moving the the epl have a bit of a difficult time adjusting to the physical play of this league.

As a United fan, I've seen CRonaldo flop, and Nani was the worst a few years back (still bad, but getting a bit better). I believe that different leagues have different tolerances to fouls and that is hard to judge when playing in England which is a very physical league.

I love watching Messi play, but he has a tendency to go to ground much to easily - one of the reasons I dislike Barcelona (and Spain for that matter) is stand the #### up and play.

Serie A - and Italy for that matter - had the reputation for the longest time of being home to the biggest floppers in the game. I honestly believe that has changed a lot in the past few years. Serie A is a very competitive (and fun) league to watch.

Anywho....I'm kinda bummed Inter got bumped today. I'm not an Inter supporter, but I like them a million times better than OM. Ranieri tactic's baffle me at times.

I watched the Inter game instead of the BM trouncing....by all reports though Bayern looked fantastic. Basel is a weak side (and it pains me greatly that they bounced United), but BM at full strength could be a tough out.

in my eyes, CL should be Barca vs RM. They are the best two teams in my eyes...but we'll have to see how the draw plays out.

Some interesting Europa league games coming up this week. City and United both down and almost out.

Watched Portland/Philly game the other day. That was interesting.

The French team was flopping all over the place vs. Inter today. I was definitely a neutral, but it got to be annoying and seemed like a ploy to slow play. By the 30th minute or so, I was a big Inter fan because of it. I actually celebrated their goal in the first leg just to make things more interesting. There's no doubt I'll pull for their opponent next time.

The epl has 3 "levels" correct? The top 2 and bottom 2 move up or down the following year?

What league does Messi play? Are his games ever on basic package directv? He's easily the greatest player this century correct?

The EPL is the top level. England has leagues going all the way down to YMCA or bar league level. I'm not sure how many, at least 10, although only the top 4 are part of "The Football League." And it's the top 3 that move down from the EPL.Messi plays for Barcelona in Spain's La Liga. His Spanish league games are hard to find without fancy soccer channels, although I have seen them on ESPN2 before. Your best chance is to see him in the Champions League, which is on Fox Sports sometimes.Messi is the consensus best player in the world right now and some consider the current Barcelona team to be the best team of all-time.

The EPL is the top flight of English league football. Below the EPL is the The Football League, which is broken into three leagues--The Championship, One & Two. Each year three teams switch places between the EPL and Championship and the Championship and One, four teams switch places between One and Two and two teams are relegated from Two to non-league play and replaced by two non-league teams.Messi plays in Spain, La Liga. It's safe to say he's the best this century. People are starting to claim (prematurely, imo) that he's the best ever. The only player who comes close right now is CRonaldo.

Two pieces of information concerning the Olympics

1) US Qualification will be shown on two channels, Universal Sports Network (dig deep looking for this niche channel), and Telemundo. I will remind everyone when the times comes next week. Brutal schedule of 3 games in just 5 days for the US in the first round. Top 2 from each group move on to a single game knock out.

2) When the real Olympics come out this summer, NBC announced that Arlo White will be their lead commentator.

Here is the roster that Porter will use to qualify for the Olympics, with the exception of one player who will be added next weekROSTERGOALKEEPERS: Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire)DEFENDERS: Josh Gatt (Molde), Perry Kitchen (D.C. United), Ike Opara (San Jose Earthquakes), Kofi Sarkodie (Houston Dynamo), Zarek Valentin (Montreal Impact), Jorge Villafaña (Chivas USA)MIDFIELDERS: Freddy Adu (Philadelphia Union), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Gent), Jared Jeffrey (Mainz), Amobi Okugo (Philadelphia Union), Michael Stephens (LA Galaxy)FORWARDS: Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim), Brek Shea (FC Dallas)
It appears they did not bother with Jozy's Euro schedule else I assume he would have been in place of Bunbury (who I am less than sold on).The last player should be a defender or midfielder. I am surprised that Sheannon Williams is not on this roster but that may be because Philly did not want three players removed from its team for so long.
Yeah- can't imagine them adding a 6th attacking player to that mix, especially with guys like Freddy and Mix already in the MF as more attacking players.
Once again I stamp how little I know about this sport on my forehead. The 20th player added was a forward, Tony Taylor, who plays in Portugal.Porter all but came out and admitted he wanted Williams, Chandler and Jozy to be on the team but that their teams would not release them (the teams are not required to release for Olympic qualifying). Luckily the MLS teams were more willing else he might not have had a team to qualify with.

Love to know what those two were jawing about. I have to say, though, it is a joy to watch Van Persie play these days. I haven't seen a striker with such finishing talent since Bergkamp.
