Here is an interesting relatively meaningless factoid I just read. MLS is 9th in average attendance when compared with every other league in the world but MLS's hidden strength is the consistency from top to bottom of the league. Only two leagues in the entire world have their lowest supported club averaging more fans than MLS's lowest supported club. Those being Bundesliga and EPL.
USA! Our minnows are less minnowy that yours
When looking at the various big leagues it is striking how wide the gap is between the haves and have nots in terms of attendance. Spain ranges from 78k to 9kItaly ranges from 51k to 9kFrance ranges from 41k to 7k

the promotion/relegation system has a lot to do with that. There are yo-yo clubs with small stadiums that never consolidate their position for long enough to expand.

NY has signed Tim Cahill from Everton.Interesting signing. If NY can find a way to get Henry, Cooper, Le Toux and Cahill all on the field together, it is going to be pretty tough to defend them.If someone can actually get Marquez to not be a ##### for even a handful of games and anchor the back 4, NY has as good a shot to win the cup as they ever have.
As an Everton fan, I have always liked Tim Cahill. For only being 5'10", he plays much taller in the air but his role (and goals) has been lessened over the past season and a half.I am hearing some rumblings of Donovan possibly making a permanent transfer to Everton for the year. Although it appears that he has a lost a step and with the understanding that a few other things fall into place for Everton, I would love to see the left-side Baines -> Pienaar connection and Coleman feeding Donovan on the right. If they could just avoid stumbling out of the gate like they have had the past few years there may be an outside chance for some European football next year. A guy can dream....

I am someone who has been down on Landon for the last year or so but even I have to say he is playing with a spring in his step I have not seen in a while. A week ago he got a through ball from about 45 yards away and proceeded to pull away from the defenders while dribbling. I have not seen him do that type of stuff in years. I hope he keeps it up.

I'd bet my left nut Tim Cahill isn't 5'10"

Doubleheader on ESPN2 tonight. We should get a chance to see Mikey play for Roma

MLS All-Star Game MLS-CHELSEA (live) 8:30 pm.

FIFA 13 doesn't come out until September 25th. I feel like I shouldn't have to wait that long. Also, Gus Johnson, Tommy Smyth, and Sam Ryan are replacing Martin Tyler and Andy Gray as commentators for the US version. It will feel like a completely different game without Gray and Tyler. Gus Johnson is a curious choice.

Chelsea continues to stock up:

Chelsea seal Oscar deal

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Internacional playmaker Oscar for a reported fee of around £25 million.
Any ideas about what kind of formation they're going to use? They have a lot of mf playmakers.
With Drogba gone they are shifting from their traditional 1-0-9 to a more balanced 1-8-1.

I have posted some of his (Gus Johnson's) soccer calls in this thread. He is the radio voice for the San Jose Earthquakes. He is quite raw but is not horrendous. His enthusiasm can be contagious.I think he is learning as much as he can about the sport in the hopes to be a WC announcer for Fox come 2018.

Hope he can get a work permit. Stoke would be a good fit for him.

Despite late Everton interest, Geoff Cameron signs with Stoke

Clearing the penultimate hurdle needed to secure his move to the English Premier League, U.S. national team center back Geoff Cameron signed a contract with Stoke City and prepared to meet the Potters in Orlando on Wednesday .

“I’m officially a Potter,” Cameron said. “I’m ready and excited to join Stoke. It’s been a long process. I’m anxious to meet with the guys and I’m anxious to start a new part of my career.”

Cameron must wait to see if he can get a waiver to get a work visa to play in the EPL. In preparation for that waiver hearing, he’s currently securing letters of support from some of the biggest names in U.S. Soccer, including national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear.

Cameron will return to the Dynamo if he cannot secure a work visa. Stoke City had been tracking the center back for more than a month. Everton, the EPL club of U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard, attempted to make a late run for the skillful defender over the weekend.

Everton’s interest was way too late, because Stoke City and MLS had already agreed to terms on his transfer a week earlier.

“I’m anxious to get this thing going,” he said. “I want to focus on soccer now. I’m glad it ended well with the Dynamo against D.C. United.”

The Potters are having preseason in Orlando, but Cameron is unsure if he’ll be able to play in any of the club’s U.S. exhibitions. Moreover, he’s unclear if he’ll be able to travel with the team back to England. Unsure when he’ll return to Houston, however, the 27-year-old star packed for a long trip.

“I packed three big bags,” he said with a chuckle.

Good to see three Americans score. I have enjoyed watching Chris Pontius this year. If he keeps improving he is going to get some looks from Europe.

I'm not a video game guy, but me and my 7 year old boy have had fun playing FIFA '11 on his Wii. We have a Manager Mode team (LA Galaxy) in its second season and have a bit of time invested. I've heard this game is really made for the other platforms, and that the Wii is not a very good system for games like FIFA soccer. I've never played the other platforms, but even I can tell that the Wii controls are pretty limited. My question is, is it worth it to buy the new FIFA game or should we just keep playing '11 until he gets a bit older and we buy him a PS3 or XBOX?

Its likely Di Matteo will stay more or less with his 4-2-3-1, but he's in a totally different mindset this year and I think the team will look and play much different. The back line is unsettled at RB and they are still shopping. The MF is now an embarrassment of riches. No one has much idea how that will play out. I expected Marin to be a loan candidate, but he looks great so far and might stick around. McEachran is unlucky - will probably be loaned out again this year, as will De Bruyne and Kakuta I think. Lampard looks as good as he's ever looked imo, but its early and he's getting old. Ramieres was the best player on the team last year. Mata will be hard to displace. I expect Di Matteo will be looking to get Hazard settled in at the #10 role. I think there's still a role for Obi Mikel. Its hard to see Malouda, Romeu, Mierles, or Benayoun finding a place on this team, but who knows? They are all still very good imo. With Oscar joining the team and a healthy Essien back, its really a crazy situation. Up front, it appears to be Torres' job to lose, with Sturridge waiting. I think Lukaku should be loaned to a team that will play him.

Fun night at PPL, and for the most part a well played game. I met Don Garber as he was walking on the field after the game. I yelled out his name and he stopped over and shook our hands.

Favorite non-game parts were the Sons of Ben chanting "You're not English over there" to the Eurosnob Chelsea supporter section, and a sign in the River End saying "'Terry's a good guy', said no one ever".

For just manager mode, I'd stick with what you're doing and wait until he's older for the 360/PS3. Unless you're playing every game and doing the managerial stuff, then the upgrade in graphics during the actual games might be worth the upgrade.

Joss Gatt's team of Molde got a tough draw for the 3 round of UCL qualifying by being paired with Basel, the team that affectively knocked Man U out of the group stage last year.

Freddy continuing to prove he has no clue how club soccer works :( .

The Philadelphia Union not explaining why Freddy Adu didn't accompany the team to its 2-0 loss at the New York Red Bulls -- calling it a "team matter" -- spurred speculation of a trade. Both Union interim coach John Hackworth and Adu laughed off the rumor, reports Dave Zeitlin.“I wasn’t paying attention but then I was told by a friend of mine,” Adu said. “I was just laughing because people don’t know why I wasn’t with the team in New York and they started speculating. I get along with my coaches and teammates. There’s no problem here at all. This is where I want to be, for sure."As for the "team matter" that kept him home last weekend, Adu said, “I think it was a little bit of a misunderstanding and I just have to move on from that. I’m ready to go. I’m good with my coaches and teammates, so all is good.”

A small win but continues to show that BeIn is going to go after everything.

Phil Schoen mentioned on a July 24 World Football Daily podcast that beIN SPORT LLC has outbid FOX Sports Media Group (FOX Soccer LLC) for the U.S. rights to the English League Cup.

One of the new ownership group for AS Roma has a minority stake in the Red Sox.
