Vancouver will be announced this afternoon as the 17th MLS franchise and will build a nice instant rivalry with Seattle in the Pacific northwest. That leaves the 18th team coming down to just Portland or St Louis now.
I'm still suprised St Louis doesn't have a team. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, St Louis was ground-zero for US Soccer.
it really was. However in all these years, neither a strong ownership group nor a viable stadium plan have been made. Looks like they are getting closer though.

A couple questions for the masses...

1. Who is entering the WC 2010 ticket draw? If you did....I have some questions about what you did. Z Machine, did you? I know you talked about it.

2. Who's been to a Chicago Fire game and can tell me anything about tickets? Kendall, maybe? A couple of friends and I are going on a road trip in June and it sets up perfectly with us in Chicago the night of a Houston/Chicago game that I'd (not sure about the rest of them) would like to go to. Are the games already sold out, are scalper tickets available, etc?

Holy smokes that did not take long.

Tomorrow at 10:00am (Pacific time), MLS will officially announce that Portland is team number 18.

The league went from no Pacific Northwest teams to now blanketing it with Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.

And shafting St. Louis in the process. But hey, let's target that Pacific Northwest market! :headbang:

I had planned on doing the World Cup draw, but its looking like I might be living/working overseas starting sometime next year, so I don't want to make a commitment to the tickets if I won't be able to use them. Also, I haven't made it to a Chicago Fire game yet. There isn't an easy way to get there via public transportation and I don't own a car. From what I've heard tickets aren't that difficult to get and I would be surprised if anyone outright sold out. I definitely want to get to some games this year, I just need to find a friend that likes soccer and has a car.

I am not convinced about the supposed shafting of St Louis. I have read rumors that MLS might still choose them and go with an unbalanced 19 teams if their bid holds up.

while last year has no real affect on this years sales, it can at least set an idea.Last year the Fire had 15 home games.3 sold out completely and 2 more were within a couple of hundred of selling out.

I would guess Beckham was at least one of those sell outs.

yes, the LA game did sell out last year from what I can see.

Seattle just announced that they have sold 32,400 tickets for tonight (which I believe is being capped at that unmber but not sure).

If that number holds true it will be the largest opening day audience in MLS history just eclipsing the 1996 opening day for the league.

i don't know why you would cap it. that's not good business sense. if you can sell 50,000 tickets to the game, you do it. are they permanently playing in the seahawks stadium or are they building a soccer only?couple of quick questions:1) do all mls coaches speak english?2) do you have any interest in the WPS? i just don't see a market here in the u.s.

I believe Qwest Field was built a few years ago as a combination football/soccer stadium in anticipation of them getting an MLS team. So I can't imagine they'll build a new one.

Teams in big stadiums cap to create demand. They want to limit seats to drive season ticket sales. It is significantly more important to drive season ticket sales than it is to have one large game. The Sounders have no plan to to build a stadium. Their owners also own Quest Field and as such it was factored into the business plan.yes all MLS coaches speak english and some speak multiple languages.I don't know what the WPS is...

Isn't WPS the new womens soccer league that starts this year? It's pretty much the same thing as the WUSA, which folded a few years back.

ETA: This

of course! Totally blanked on that.MLS is niche.

WNBA is approaching micro niche.

AFL is not even fielding any teams this year

WPS falls below even these small league IMO. However, their business model is extremely low expenses, so they may barely survive.

United couldn't have drawn it up much better than this. Huge disappointment for the four strong teams on the other side of the bracket.

Yeah, if I had to choose a team for Arsenal to play, it would have been Porto and then Villarreal, in that order.

Obviously no team is a pushover at this stage, but I'd much rather play Villarreal than the other 5 teams out there.

Brings back memories of the 2006 Champions League semis..

ManU looks like they will be able to walk into the finals. How lucky for Villareal and Arsenal draw each other. Neither would be able to get past any other club.

I'm not disputing that they're some of the weaker sides left, but this just isn't true.Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 @ Stamford Bridge

Arsenal beat Man U. 2-1 @ The Emirates

Arsenal drew Liverpool 1-1 @ The Emirates

Now we all know teams play better or worse given the circumstances, but they haven't lost to any one of the big 3 this season in the league.

They wouldn't get past Barcelona, but it's not like Arsenal are a bunch of pushovers. They might be having a down year, but to say that they wouldn't be able to get past any other team in the competition is, IMO...wrong.

I won't predict winners because a couple of defensive lapses or sloppy goalkeeping can keep a team out of the final 4, but in no way would it be a sure thing if they were drawn against United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern, or Porto.

UEFA Champions League quarter-finals:Liverpool FC (ENG) v Chelsea FC (ENG)
Gutcheck time for the Reds. They got their asses handed to them by Chelsea weeks back.
Liverpool swept Chelsea this season in the EPL.0-1 at Stamford Bridge last fall and 2-0 at Anfield last month. As a Chelsea fan, I am conflicted on this draw. On the one hand, revenge is sweet and I really think the six points the scousers took from Chelsea this season were undeserved.* But the CL is not the EPL - its an entirely different game under the two-legged total goals format. Further, these two teams have met (I believe) in at least the past four champions league competitions - the last three years in the knock out rounds. (and we won't have Jon Arne Riise around to rescue the Blues this year!)Honestly, if given the choice of only one match-up, I would prefer to see Barca-Bayern over another Chelsea-Liverpool chess match. The script is well-known: Chelsea will attack half-heartedly the first 45 min. at Anfield, and then sink 11 guys behind the ball if they score or have a 0-0 at the half, looking forward to the 0-0 or 1-0 at Stamford in the second leg. If Liverpool scores first at home, the game will be interesting as Chelsea will push for an away goal and, if it ends 1-1, will play for a 0-0 at home. I would have no faith in Cech against Pepe in PK's - where Cech is at his weakest and is Pepe's main strength.* I don't intend to argue it, and the scoreboard rules, but just note that the first game was won on a Boswinga own-goal and the second was a disgrace due to the rediculous Lampard red card when the game was 0-0 (and which was not penalized by the FA upon review).

It is official. Portland is in.

Keeping their name Timbers and starting play in 2011 with Vancouver.

2009 Seattle gets MLS to 15 teams

2010 Phili gets MLS to 16 teams

2011 Vancouver and Portland gets MLS to 18 teams

Garber(MLS commish) said they are still considering going to 20 teams by 2012 but that they will proceed very cautiously with choosing the next two cities (of which I think only St Louis has an active bid.

Is it too early to know which Champions League Quarter Final games ESPN2 will be showing?
Knowing ESPN's love of the EPL you can pretty much pencil in Manchester v Porto over Villarreal v Arsenal on the 7th. Given any chance to show Man U they will.On the 8th I would think they will show Liverpool v Chelsea over Barcelona v Bayern, again they love the EPL. I would be completely shocked if this isn't the route they go.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that on the seventh they'll show Man U - Porto live and on the eighth it'll be Liverpool - Chelsea. Sucks that we probably won't get to see Barca and Bayern live.

Liverpool should handle Chelsea unless they run into some injury issues again. Their form has really picked the right time to come together. ManU will have to really #### up to not make it to the finals. BTW where is the final this year? Ibrox?

For the Championship League, did anyone notice Dos Santos going to my Tractor Boys on loan for the rest of the season. Already 1 goal in two appearences and apparently the best player on the field when he comes on according to the Ipswich Town 606ers. They pretty much need to win 5 of 7 to make the playoffs and injuries to Civelli and Walters came at the wrong time. Big game against Watford tomorrow.

These next two games look like the defining games for my "other" team, West Brom. Bolton this week and Stoke next week..if they can't pick up some major points, it looks like it's all over.

Bayern won 1:0 over Karlsruhe to pull within 1 point of the top, but without Klose and Toni they looked awful. They were more than lucky the escape with the win. They need to figure something out before Barcelona.

 :wall: :wall:

its a United implosion! 2-0 Fulham in the 88th. Scholes red carded in the 18, tevez and rooney start on the bench. And Rooney gets a 2nd yellow, bye bye!

Wow....did anyone watch the Spurs/Chelsea game? One of the most exciting no goal finishes I've seen in a long time....1-0 to Spurs is the final.....Chelsea pouring men forward at the end, Gomes standing on his head to keep Spurs 1-0 up...Alex hits the crossbar in the 93rd.

Gomes had one of the finest saves I've seen in a long time in this game....perfectly outstretched knock away.

I am hoping that the second games will air on Setanta and/or ESPN Deportes. I am psyched for Barca-Bayern. I'll take Barca, Liverpool, Man U, and ArsenalBarca-Man U final Barca 09 champs  Now that is a killer and exciting bracket. Can't wait for April 7th.

I totally fell asleep at the soccer DVR wheel this week. Would have loved to see that one and Arsenal-Newcastle.

Of course it isn't just ESPN's fascination with the EPL. I've said it before, but most casual soccer fans in the US can't see anything outside of England. In today's sports section of the local paper, on the 9th page, near the bottom in a bulleted section titled soccer, after two sentences about Portland joining the MLS:
Liverpool was paired with Chelsea in the European Champions League for the fifth time in five years, while defending champions Manchester United will face Porto in the quarterfinals.

Liverpool up 5-nil on Aston Villa.

Aston Villa is a pretty good squad, too. What has gotten into Liverpool? Is it simply Gerrard coming back?
