A group of us from work are leaving at two and heading for a bar.Go Barca!
If your bars are anything like NYC bars (or at least the ones that feature soccer regularaly), you're going to be an hour late to even get in.I'm going to meet a bunch of neighborhood dads for a daddy-day care CL final (and hope nap head into extra time... hello dimatap!)
Shouldn't be a problem. There are two bars in the area that are big soccer bars and they should be packed. This one is run by a local radio talk show host who knows nothing about soccer. He barely mentions the sport on his show. Like DP I'm hoping to avoid the throngs of Manchester fans by going there.
I thought you told me that Bobby's was closing?
I did. About a month ago he announced he was closing and there was even a news report about it. But, he evidently got a cash infusion and stayed open. At least for now.By the way, I'm wearing that knock of Barca jersey today.

The one I got for 2000 Colones in Costa Rica? That thing is terrible.

Move back in at home?

Heading out at noon Pacific to catch the second half. I just can't leave here for 2+ hours at a pop after being away for 10+ days.

Oh and yes, Venezuelan are hot. Plus, the gf is a great cook and is smart as hell.

Lineup I am hearing about now:

Valdés

Puyol -- Touré -- Piqué -- Sylvinho

Busquets

Xavi -- Iniesta

Messi -- Eto'o -- Henry

That is seven starters and a coach all from Barca's youth academy. We know how to build a soccer club. Unreal.

I'm worried about Busquets and Sylvinho getting abused. If Henry is on though, those 5 attacking players are deadly.
They should do fine, Sergi is developing well and is good in possession. It is Toure that is the concern for me. We have to attack and hold the ball, otherwise our back line is going to crumble.Let me clarify a bit here. The problem with a Barcelona defense is how exposed it becomes to counter attack. To defend this we rely on a very robust offside trap. It is extremely difficult to implement that with Toure as he isn't a natural defender and we cannot use the trap well with him back there. This is what ultimately led to so many chances for Chelsea last round.

Awesome. Hopefully Iniesta and Henry aren't playing too hurt. Barca will be wearing their traditional colors (as will I) while Man U will be in white. Can't wait for this.

American, Manchester United fan stabbed near Rome

ROME (AP)—An American and Manchester United fan were hospitalized after being stabbed Wednesday ahead of the Champions League final. Nine people, including United and Barcelona supporters, were arrested.

Four Italians were arrested in Ostia, on the coast near Rome, after they attacked an American, apparently mistaking him for a United supporter. The man was beaten up and stabbed in his thigh and backside, police said.

A United fan was taken to a hospital after he was stabbed in the thigh, police said. The fan reported that he had been attacked by four people near his hotel in the Vatican area.

Up to 50,000 United and Barcelona supporters converged on Rome for the match Wednesday night, and large numbers of police patrolled the city.

Three Barcelona fans were arrested after police searched their car and found blunt objects, including clubs and a javelin, police said. They were traveling from Civitavecchia, a port near Rome where hundreds of Spanish fans had arrived by ship.

Two United fans were arrested for assaulting bystanders and police in Campo de Fiori, a historic piazza and popular tourist hangout. Police said the men were drunk despite a ban on alcohol sales imposed by authorities in areas including the city center and near the stadium.

Hundreds attended Pope Benedict XVI’s public audience at the Vatican, waving their flags and scarves before the pontiff. The match referee, Massimo Busacca of Switzerland, greeted the pope at the end of the audience.

Some 67,000 people are expected to pack the Stadio Olimpico for the match. VIPs include the Spanish royals and Britain’s Prince William, who was invited by the English Football Association as the organization’s president.

Noel Gallagher and Russell Brand Talk Football

I just found out these guys did a tryout 2-hour talk show about soccer together one month ago:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/mar/0...ball-radio-show

Gallagher is a Manchester City fan and Brand is a West Ham fan. The show was pretty good. They're funny together because they never stop busting each other's balls but you still get the sense they genuinely like each other.

I came across a 10 minute clip on youtube because Gallagher had said he hoped Newcastle would get relegated because "there's no better sight than fat Geordies crying." Geordies are working class types from the North East (Newcastle, Sunderland) whom people from the North West (Manchester, Liverpool) like to make fun of:

A javelin? WTF? Are these Olympic hooligans?

Not just a javelin, but a blunt javelin. Which is really just a staff or a broom handle.

A curiously flat match, entertainment-wise. The first goal, against the run of play, was crucial: Barcelona seemed to relax and fall comfortably into their micro-passing game after that. Messi's coup de grace, when it came, was a sublimely simple piece of football - exquisite cross, neatly tucked away. United just seemed to lack the passion needed for the occasion, as well as the clinical finishing that Barcelona brought to the affair. Congrats to Barcelona and especially to their young coach Guardiola, who had his squad magnificently prepared despite the make-shift back four he had to cobble together. :lmao:

I am by no means a soccer (football) expert, but I can't remember the last time Man U looked that flat (first 10 minutes excepted) in such a big game.

With the FA Cup final coming up this weekend ( :banned: Everton :pickle: v. Chelsea, ESPN 10a ET), here's a good piece on Everton keeper Tim Howard.

Tim Howard: Achieving His Goal

With what happened in the press when he went to ManU to the whole Carroll/Van Der Sar debacle, it's good to see him doing good things for Everton. I'm sure it was a pretty sweet victory vs. ManU in the semi's of the FA Cup a few weeks back. He's a good guy and you can certainly see his sincerity in the video.

United looked really let down after that first goal. It almost seemed like they thought the game was over after that, and had little fire.

Barça played well in many respects. Puyol had a good game and should have gotten at least 1 goal. Messi's body control was sick on that header. Piqué again played well... I really like that guy. Xavi's cross was perfect. Scholes should have gotten a red for that tackle... totally classless IMO.

I can't wait to see Puyol mix it up with Ronaldo at least twice next year when Ronaldo puts on a different white shirt. They guy is such a little #####. I hope he bankrupts Real.

Am I the only one that is stoked about seeing a Barça - ManU final?

Are these two teams not the two best in Europe right now? Thank goodness it wasn't a reply of last year's final.
I am super stoked on the matchup. I've been saying for this Barca team to go down in history they to to not only sweep all competitions, but also beat Man-U along the way. Can't wait for it to happen. Hopefully Henry and Puyol will be back. Losing Alves and Abidal sucks, but I don't think it is too much to overcome. Messi-Ronaldo giving us an Ovechkin-Crosby Kobe-Lebron sidestory should be fun as well.

Barca 3

Man U 1

There. I said it.
:lmao:
Guess I gave Man U too much credit. Scary first few minutes. Barca getting out-shot 5-0 before the goal. Game completely turned from there. If Ronaldo hit that free kick or Park with the follow through early.... Great play by Valdez.

Messi seals the best player on the world debate.

He does. But I would still take Xavi(or the Iniesta of the last few months).

It's no coincidence that both are key players for the best club team in the world and the best national team in the world.

They have been playing in Barcelona since they were 11 and 12 respectively.

whoa.

Other than Ronaldo- who was the best player on the pitch, IMO- that was some awful play from United. Vidic was absolutely abused on that E'to goal. Carrick was dismal on both sides of the ball- couldn't hit a pass (and he's been a silent lynchpin to United's success, IMO) was always a step slow defensively and couldn't fill the gaps that Barca always found. Evra was non-existent. Rooney too. Park too (and worse- lost possession too much). Giggs too. I am still dumbfounded that Messi's head put United away with Ferdinand completely lost.

ON the other side of things- brilliant performance by that back line and MF of Barca. Puyol was out of his mind and Xavi was the man o the match for me- whoever was supposed to clamp him down (the way Chelsea did) didn't, and he was able to get that team firing on all cylinders.

Messi seals the best player on the world debate.
:kicksrock: Ronaldo was the better player on the day, throughout the competition, and for the past several seasons. Nice header, though.
Big fan of Messi, but I agree with Sebowski about Ronaldo being the better (best) player on the field today. didn't even think Messi was the best player for Barcelona today, let alone better than Ronaldo.
How could you consider any United player the best player on the day? Ron had the free kick on goal and flubbed an easy goal opportunity. Outside of that he had a couple shots wide and a couple elbows thrown. Not really sure how that counts for more to you than the inspiring play of Iniesta and Xavi.

Messi is like Randy Moss circa 2000, where you had to key on him so much that the other players (like Robert Smith) could put up good numbers and hurt defenses. It doesn't translate perfectly, but it's close.

Ronaldo is still a better all around player though, and if I'm drafting a team, he's #1 on the list. I guess the only thing he doesn't do is actively make the players around him better.

BTW, I think Puyol would be the man of the match if Xavi didn't put that money cross onto Messi's dome. I can't stress how nice it is to see Piqué come into his own though.

Finally, congrats blaugrana on a fantastic season. Winning 3 titles isn't easy by any stretch, and to do it with the class that they've shown all year is most impressive. Aside from United's treble about 7 years ago, this was the most dominant team in football. Real Madrid circa 2002-2003 comes close, but they never won the triple like Barça just did.

BTW, great interview with Henry. The dude is a class act. He'll be missed when he retires.

Final thought... Sir Alex's retirement date just got pushed back about 2-3 years.

Every time Ronaldo touched the ball he forced multiple Barca players to deal with him. His touch was on, he was actually trying (and running), and was electric with the ball. Should've finished a couple of goals- but really had nobody else playing around him and still managed to put the fear of god into Barca.Xavi and Iniesta were amazing... I could be talked into giving the MoM to Xavi without too much argument. Messi, not so much.

So I turned my phone on at like 5 PM and I literally had 5 text messages from different people saying "you've gotta watch the champions league final" or "what a game!"

I kept waiting for United to make it 2-1 and pour on the final flurry for the last 10 minutes....but it never came. Barcelona dominated. That's the only word for it....domination.....complete domination.

I thought it was kinda boring, to be honest. Certainly not like the 06 Arsenal - Barcelona final. Barcelona were on the back foot early, got the goal against the run of play and BAM - it's over. United looked totally flat afterwards...like they were scrambling for an equalizer 25 minutes into the game instead of settling in and playing their game for the long-term goal. They looked, dare I say it....flustered. At one point in the second half, I noted Rooney throwing his hands up in complete frustration after someone played a ball out of bounds. Congrats to Barca and their fans....they truly proved they're the best team in the world today, bar none.

Henry will always hold a special place in my heart...he's the one who turned me onto club football altogether.Definitely a class act. My favorite player of all-time, and it's not close.

Just got done watching the replay of the final - thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't say enough about the back 4. Thrown together for the biggest match of the year and they played very well. Toure made some nice plays and didn't worry me as much as I thought he might, Sylvinho was very solid on the left, Pique played excellent and Puyol was just tremendous. His play was absolutely fantastic - certainly man of the match potential. It was great to have Henry and Iniesta fit, though I think the rust showed for Thierry as I was surprised he didn't finish that chance he had in the second half. Iniesta didn't show such rust, though, and Xavi should just be called the Puppet Master or something because that guy just pulls all the strings. What a pleasure it was to watch those two players run things in the midfield. Eto'o showed why he's so dangerous - glad to see him finish his chance as he had been wasting many in recent matches. Messi played well after whiffing on that first shot. The header was excellent and came close to connecting on that cross from Eto'o. Valdes, after having trouble with that first free kick, did a very good job as well. Just a thoroughly dominant performance from an excellent team. I don't know what was going on with Man U, but it was strange to see them become so deflated after that early goal.

It was so cool to see this team win, with Pep at the helm and so many players from La Masia having integral roles in the match. First Spanish team to win the treble and I heard during the match that Barcelona passed Real Madrid with 851 total goals in European competitions. Icing on a very sweet cake.

Puyol was the player of the game, imo.He really shut down Ronaldo, it was sweet. The first 10 minutes had me worried, but after thatit was pretty much all FCB.
