I know nothing about this stuff.Is this recoverable even with enough time off or will have simply lost too much speed/flexibility to ever get back to a pro level?

Who knows at this point, but it sounds like its just breaks which are much easier to come back from. For some perspective when Jason Williams (Bulls PG) crashed that motorcycle he was never the same, but that was because he basically blew out every ligament in his knee. I guess the closest recent comparison is what happened to Eduardo (Arsenal/Croatian forward) when he broke his tibia and dislocated his ankle and came back about a full year later.

4th gets an auto berth

5th has to play a two leg playoff against the 4th team in CONCACAF

6th is out

Ecuador plays an already qualified Chile

Argentina haven't won in Uruguay in 33 years

these two countries have been playing each other since 1890

Pretty crazy

The last time ARG failed to qualify was Mexico in '70. At that time, only 16 teams competed.

Uruguay has the lead in GD, so they need a win not a draw. I would be surprised if they even get in the playoff.

Broken bones heal with no lingering problems in almost all cases, but with severe injuries you have to worry about injuries to things other than bones (Ligaments, tendons, muscle).

There was an article today - maybe Grant Wahl - on how the US can't get a seed. They are currently 12th and all but 3 ahead of them have qualified. This assumes the same formula that was used in Germany.Here's the link:
