***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (4 Viewers)

1. Fergie needs to shut his trap about the ref in the Liverpool game. He should be more concerned with his pitiful midfield.

2. The US kicks off in the U-17 today (game on at 2pm ESPNU). I think this team is suppose to be better than the U-20s with McInerney, Gil, and Jerome being the bigger names I recognize.

I love this thread. So many various and knowledgeable opinions.

The Donovan posts are a perfect reason why this thread is so readable.

There must be 10 different opinions on Landon and every time I read one I nod my head saying, "yes that makes sense" even if it was opposite to what I just agreed with in the previous post.

I don't know what we smoke in this thread but it so awesome to read opposing opinions on players/teams/leagues etc and not have any tool factor come out. This might not be Big Soccer in terms of depth of knowledge, but I would rather read this thread than almost anyone on Big Soccer that eventually gets run down by the tool factor (similar to almost any other thread here in the FFA).

i heard they left a couple of the bigger talents (guys that were playing in europe) off the roster in order to push team chemistry. Is this true? if so, its a bad move. But yeah, i am excited about this team. i read that they play a very attacking style.

So given Davies and probably GOoch missing the WC (guh), here's a maybe kinda-sorta lineup for SA...HowardDolo/Spector, Marshall, Boca, Castillo (Bornstein/gulp... Hejduk)Holden, Jones/Clark/Edu, Bradley, LDJozy, DempseyI actually really like what I've seen from Marshall for the US. Shut down Costly (Hon) and Perez (Pan), each of their country's go-to forwards. Solid in the air, great on the tackle and not horrible in distribution (although this is one area that Gooch's time in Italy- even just the training field- seems to have payed dividends). Castillo? Who knows... can't really get much worse than what we've got at LBI'd like to see LD stay in the MF and not get moved up front. Yeah, he's got the pace that we'll miss with Davies' absence, but Davies is also one powerful Mofo (former wrestler) who uses his speed AND strength to win and hold balls up front. Davies can play with his back to goal- this is not LD's strong-suit at all.Davies' injury kinda fixes the Dempsey problem, IMO. He's too good to leave off the field, but too uncaring in the MF to warrant his inclusion as a done-deal. I just hope to god he doesn't get lazy up front the way he has in the MF for the Nats- but he's definitely a guy I'd want in front of goal with the game on the line.Again, regarding Dempsey- I watched a number of early Fulham games this season and he was playing far better for club than country- primarily because he was clearly trying harder in England. I watched far too many situations arise for the US where you could see him just not making the run (always defensively- he never has that problem getting forward) and then I'd flip on the Fulham game the next weekend and see him doing exactly what he didn't do for the US. Speaking from my ### here... gotta be that he's fighting for his job every time he steps onto the field for Fulham ,where he clearly all he has to do is sign his player card and he's in for the US.I don't think this lineup is going to scare too many of the other 31 teams... but after the Confed Cup, you know they'll all have their eyes open and won't take the US lightly.
I may have missed this but has it been confirmed that Gooch is out of the WC?

no I don't think so. The latest rumors/info are referring to a 6 month rehab schedule though. And with the likelihood of never seeing the field at that time for Milan does lead to obvious concern we have as to how and when he will get back into game shape.

I'd assume if it really is 6 months that he'd use May to get into shape (ie he'd play in every US friendly) since like you said his Milan season is basically over. He'd basically half the first part of May toget into shape, 3 (I'd assume) friendies to get into better game shape, and then another 1.5-2 weeks before the WC started. It's doable, but at this point who really knows.

OK good, I thought I missed something. Truth be told, he wasnt going to see the pitch at Milan anyway. So as long as he is fully recovered by the time the WC rolls around, Id bet he is inserted back into the starting lineup. Had this happened to some other player, I could see Bradley replacing him in the lineup - but not with Onyewu. The key for him is that hes healthy, not that hes playing every week.

I watched the Liverpool/ ManU game over the weekend and I watched the Real Madrid AC Milan match...I have no idea if these were live or on delay (I am assuming delay)....but those were some good game. Was pulling for Kaka and Co. as well as ManU.

I have a question about the ManU game. Late in the game (like 85th minute or so) Owen made a good run and appeared to have a breakaway, but was fouled at the top of the box...Can he get a penalty shot even though he wasnt in the box when he was fouled? If not, it seems like fouling when the dude gets by you is the smart play.

should have been a straight red.

One of the poorest refereed games I've seen in the EPL in years. Blatant missed offsides, poor fouls given, poor fouls missed, both sides.

nope. He cant get a penalty outside the 18 yard box. if the ref determined that the foul was the only thing that prevented an unstoppable scoring chance (no other defenders within range to stop him) he can red card the tackler and send him right off. That ref didnt do that. Guess he thought another Liverpool defender could have cut him off.By the way, that little Isreali guy on Liverpool is awesome. Very creative and great pace. Is the Israeli national team even decent?

They absolutely gagged one in the Real Madrid/ AC Milan game as well in the box. I thought he shoulda gotten at least a yellow card and he ended up not even getting called for a foul...Not sure of the names involved. It was early in the game.

It has to be in the box for it to be a penalty. I may agree with you about a foul like that near the end of the game to save a result. But it's risky because it's an automatic red card if there's only the goalie left to beat.

I think you were watching the ManU Liverpool game live. However, AC Milan was involved in a normal Serie A game this weekend so you must have been watching some sort of replay from a previous year(I don't remember Milan and Madrid playing each other this season but they may have).

Benayoun has been one of the few bright spots for Liverpool.

I guess it would depend on what shirt Kaka was wearing. They played 10/21 in the Champions League:

He was watching a replay of this weeks Champions League match when Milan won 3-2.

:lmao: That is embarrassing. But also my favorite part about soccer. I never have any idea who won what so even old games are new to me.I could watch a college football game from 1997 and know who won.The final was 3-2 AC Milan won...Ill go look to see when it was from. I saw Kaka, Rhonaldinio, Raul....so it wasnt a 1970's game I know that.

CONCACAF is off to a rough start in the tournament.Mexico and Honduras both lost (to Switz and Argie respectively) and CR only manages a draw against the Kiwi's.Interesting how the 4 CONCACAF teams for the U17 match the 4 top teams for the World Cup Quals...

 I don't think he started v. Chelsea, but he came in as a sub and really picked up the pace for some nice pushes. Fun to watch

US announces a Nov 14 friendly vs. Slovakia in Slovakia. Two good games now.
Nice, we need to play as many games as possible to see what we have with our depth.
sadly, we have so few players getting regular time overseas, we might be able to test out depth as we may need each and every friendly to get as many of our regulars game time as possible.
I fall into this same trap as well thinking most of our players aren't getting regular time. But it's actually not true. Here are all the guys that regularly play for the NT that play overseas.Altidore (Hull) - seems to be a somewhat regular subDempsey (Fulham) - starterFehlheiber (AGF) - starterBradley (Bor Monch) - pissed his coach off and missed a few matches but is now back to being a starterCherundolo (Hannover) - starterGooch (Milan) - ***not seeing regular timeBoca (Rennes) - off and on starterSpector (West Ham) - hasn't played much but did go the distance in the draw vs Arsenal yesterdayHoward (Everton) - starter

The Israeli national team is always in the hunt for qualification for the WC and Euro Cup, but they never make it to the big tournaments. During 2006 World Cup Qualification, they were the only team not to lose a single game yet didnt advance to the finals because they had so many draws. Benayoun is their captain and clearly the best player. They have a few other players who also play in Europe - Tal Ben Haim, formerly from Chelsea and now at Portsmouth, Ben Sahar (Espanyol), Dudu Aouate (Mllorca).

I agree with all of these but I firmly believe that all of our national team starters should be seeing close to 90 minutes a game, not as spot startersGooch and Altidore were the ones I am most concerned with, and with Gooch's injury I am even more concerned. And it just kills me to see a promising young player like Jozy not getting more time. But this is a problem we seem to deal with every time around and will just have to work through it this time.

Agreed. But his heart is in the right places. There are far worse reasons not to get a game. It's a learning experience about being a professional. I wouldn't be too concerned.

As an aside, as the rise of social networking and web connectivity grow, we're going to see many such examples of inappropriate professional behavior from the younger generation who have been facebooking, tweeting, posing on message boards, etc. since they learned to type. These faux-pas are going to be really widespread in 5 years.

I could not find the info in the article I linked too. What was the reason he was late?I am concerned because we need Jozy to get as much time as possible and its obvious his coach is not sold on him being a starter and this is not going to help his coach find time for him even as a sub if there is another player who is pushing him for time,

Pre>you forgot about Eddie Johnson. Honest mistake, I'm sure...
And the Aston Villa keepers. I think he was limiting it to people that are regularly playing on the USMNT right now.
Yeah I was. There is a little bit of a chicken-egg thing with that though. Guys like Adu, DMB, EJ, etc don't play for their club so they aren't in form and don't get a shot for NT either. Then again, maybe the reason they don't play for their club is they aren't all that good. I did leave off Demerit who obviously is a reg when healthy.
