Any other thoughts on who should play with Jozy up top in 2010?
One of EJ, Twellman, Wolff, or Mathis IMOETA - forgot about Kamani Hill...add him to the mix
Don't know much about Hill...EJ has some of Davies' attributes...Mathis and Wolf are kind of meh.
I think he was joking Hucks but in case he wasn'tEJ: Not playingHill: Not playingTwellman: Missed most of 2008 and 2009 with injuriesWolff: Had an ok year scoring 11 goals in 27 games, good for tied for 10th in scoring but did not help team into playoffsMathis: Still has some good talent but no longer has the mobility to play up top and rarely finds himself as an out and out striker any more in MLS, playing wide midfielder or very withdrawn striker at times.

:X Cunningham? Really?Don't get me wrong, he's a decent MLS player and a former TFC guy, but come on...
This "decent" MLS player was the leading scorer in the league this year.
I'm aware.....but I've seen the guy play often enough during his career to know that he's not a USMNT caliber striker. I assume he's just a fill-in for the time being anyway.
I agree. Sadly the pool is very very small for candidates and he has earned a shot.

yeah, I didn't want to be a ####, but what little I had seen of those guys(don't watch MLS much) was uninspiring to say the least.

It has to be Dempsey. He is a proven goal scorer. And unlike Jozy, he's good with the ball at his feet. But for whatever reason, he gets lost in the USMNT's MF. Play him like Arsenal used to play Bergkamp.

:coffee:the lack of speed and pace hurts but he's stronger than Davies in other areas.

I'm still on board for Demspey going up top. His dribbling mistakes wont be as bad and he wont have to defend. Plus it helps get one more of our talented MF's onto the pitch.

I would like to see this Cunningham guy get a shot though. Despite the heroics of WC qualifying, i cant imagine he'd be worse than the Conner.

Real officially out of Copa del Rey with a 1-0 win in the 2nd leg leaving Alcorcon winning 4-1 on aggregate.
wow
I had no idea where Alcorcon was but it is a suburb of Madrid. That's gotta feel pretty good. This is from their wiki page:"Founded in 1971, it currently plays in Segunda División B - Group 2, holding home matches at the Municipal de Santo Domingo, with a 3,000 seat capacity.":lmao: :wall: :wall:

Dunno. It's hard to get info on these games quickly. van der Vaart scored the goal so he played. Obviously Ronaldo didn't. Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Very, very sad. From what I read it was suicide. He was in psycholiogical treatment for a while. For everybody it came as a big surprise, but you just can´t look in somebodies head.

Germany stunned by Enke's suicide death

By JUERGEN VOGES (AP) – 9 hours ago

HANNOVER, Germany — The suicide death of Robert Enke left Germany stunned Wednesday, sending the soccer-obsessed country into mourning and leaving the national team without its top goalkeeper for next year's World Cup.

Enke's widow appeared at a news conference, broadcast live throughout the country, saying her husband battled depression for years before he stepped onto the tracks and got hit by an express train Tuesday evening not far from his home.

"I tried to be there for him," Teresa Enke said, choking back tears. "When he was acutely depressive, it was a difficult time. We thought we'd manage everything. We thought with love, we could do it. But you can't."

Hundreds of people filed into Marktkirche, a Lutheran church, on Wednesday evening to attend a religious service and then march silently to Hannover's soccer stadium to honor Enke, who was the local club's captain.

The memorial service was conducted by Bishop Margot Kaessmann, the first woman ever elected to lead the nation's Protestants.

"The death of this athlete shows that soccer is not everything in our life," Kaessmann said. "Behind popularity and success there could be profound loneliness and desperation."

Kaessmann closed by saying, in English, "You'll Never Walk Alone," the title of a song adopted by Liverpool fans and supporters of other soccer teams, including German clubs.

Enke's widow was the first to light a candle.

Germany coach Joachim Loew and captain Michael Ballack were among those attending the service, and the German soccer federation canceled an exhibition against Chile slated for Saturday. Hannover canceled all practice until Monday.

Loew said the national team could not simply go back to business as usual.

"We lost a friend. We deeply mourn Robert Enke," Loew said. "I feel completely empty. He was a great guy. He had incredible respect for others. We will miss him, as a top-class sportsman and an extraordinary man."

Enke had a good chance of being Germany's starting goalkeeper at next year's World Cup in South Africa. He is the second Germany player known to have suffered from depression. Talented Bayern Munich midfielder Sebastian Deisler quit soccer in January 2007 after several bouts of depression and five knee operations.

"I can assure you — we owe Robert Enke that — German soccer will use all its capabilities to find an answer to the question of how a young athlete celebrated by so many as an idol could land in such a situation," German soccer federation president Theo Zwanziger said.

"We need time to come to terms with everything and not superficially."

National broadcasters prepared special programs dedicated to Enke, praised as a generous man who established a foundation to help children with a heart disorder that killed his 2-year-old daughter in 2006.

Enke and his wife adopted a girl in May who is now 8 months old, and Teresa Enke said her husband hid his illness because he was afraid the infant would be taken away from the family if his depression became known.

She said her 32-year-old husband had been afraid that he would lose "his sport, our private life," if news of his illness became public.

Police said Enke left a suicide note and that there were no indications his death was anything but a suicide.

Valentin Markser, a doctor who treated Enke, said the goalkeeper first sought treatment of depression in 2003, when he lost his starting place at Spanish club Barcelona and developed anxieties and fear of failure.

Enke again sought treatment in early October, after developing a mysterious illness. Doctors took several weeks to determine that he had a bacterial intestinal infection.

In his suicide note, Enke apologized to his family and the staff treating him for deliberately misleading them into believing he was better, "which was necessary in order to carry out the suicide plans," Markser said.

"Despite daily treatment, we did not succeed in preventing his suicide," the doctor said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent a "very personal" note to Enke's widow to convey her "consternation and compassion," government spokesman Christoph Steegmans said. Many other top politicians sent their sympathies.

Enke had not been selected for Saturday's match and Wednesday's game against Ivory Coast in Gelsenkirchen because he had only recently returned from the intestinal infection and had played only two Bundesliga games since then.

The illness had kept him sidelined for nine weeks and forced him to miss four Germany games.

Enke made his national team debut in a 1-0 loss to Denmark in March 2007. His last game was a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan on Aug. 12. He also played 196 Bundesliga games.

After Jens Lehmann retired following last year's European Championship, Enke was promoted to No. 1 for Germany but was slowed by a broken hand.

In Barcelona, club president Joan Laporta said: "I knew him personally and he was a very well educated, correct guy. Barcelona is in mourning over the death of Robert Enke."

Enke first sought help after he was blamed for Barcelona's loss to a second-division team in his debut and was dropped from the first team by then-coach Louis van Gaal, now in charge at Bayern Munich.

Born in the former East German city of Jena and starting his career there, Enke also played for Borussia Moenchengladbach, Benfica, Tenerife and Fenerbahce, which he left after one game because of a hostile reaction by fans over a poor performance. He joined Hannover in 2004.

I fear it may never happen in my life time but can you imaging an MLS with 6-7 teams being run and supported like Seattle is? It is mind boggling how well they have done there and now there is some signs that instead of taking a step back in season 2, like many teams in all sports do, they look like they can significantly increase their season ticket base, which was already the most MLS history.

Nice article on Freddy Adu from BBC of all places.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/chrisbevan/2009..._forgotten.html
I just don't get Adu.I remember summer 07, watching the FIFA U-20 World Cup....he was just amazing. I was at the US/Austria quarterfinal in Toronto, and make no mistake about it - Freddy was far and away the best player on the field. The same game included Erwin Hoffer (scored the winner in ET) and Sebastian Prodl, who've made a few appearances with the Austrian senior team and play for good clubs in Napoli and Werder Bremen. It also includes US starters Altidore and Bradley, along with Robbie Rogers. Freddy Adu was better than all of them.

28 months later....WTF has happened?

I think we all know what happened...a combination of him being overhyped and undersized....but it's just crazy to think about. I used to always think "yeah, he's doomed, he'll never live up to the hype" when he first started getting time for DC United. But during that '07 U-20 Cup, he dominated. He dominated that game against Austria, simply put. And here we are today.

ETA - not to mention that he captained the team despite being (IIRC, not 100% sure on this) the youngest player on the US roster - or at least the youngest player in the lineup.

From what I have seen he is one of the very few American players with skill on the ball. That does not fit into Bradleys style. Bradley will be gone after South Africa if there is any sort of god.Why he doesn't fit into any of the Euro squads is what makes me wonder. Nobody comes out and says he sucks. I've never read anything that makes him come off as a ##### bag. He's small but so are a ton of world class players.

This article compares him to Rooney at some point. Rooney has game intelligence and fire. Not much else. I am a Rooney hater, but he gets the job done by being in the right place and his work rate. I think Adu has more skill on the ball than Rooney and has the potential to be more effective taking on defenders.

Who would you rather have on the pitch: Beasley or Adu?

There has to be something more that is holding him back. I think he is a talent not being allowed the time to shine.

Could someone link the size of Torres, Messi, Bojan, etc to Adu? Is Adu a midget or something? I'll attempt this while sober next week if I get the time.

IMO the guy just needs to get on the field. We'll never know what he can or cannot do if hes riding the pine.

Not much time to respond.... but very interesting article that doesn't really tell us much that we US fans don't already know (although the Monaco GM wanting him for marketing reasons vs the coach not wanting him is telling). But very cool to get a brit's perspective on one of ours. fwiw- the article does NOT compare him to Rooney... ah- you were drunk when writng.I watched all the US u-20 games in 07 and I agree with Steve- Adu played fantastic stuff throughout. He and Jozy both looked like guys who deserved to be on the world stage, but especially Adu. I wish the article had gotten into more of what's happening in Portugal this year... it sounds like another case of the club's high expectations not being met by a good player not being great (yet). I sincerely hope he gets in there or can swing a move somewhere... ANYWHERE... else where he can play.

Looking forward to seeing the US this weekend... it's this weekend, right?

With Ashley Cole already hurt in last weekend's game against ManUnited, Lampard is now out for three weeks and Terry is also injured - both while training for an England friendly against Brazil. Chelsea will likely survive this, but it could be the deathknell for my EPL fantasy team.

What is going on in the MLS playoffs. I caught the LA Galaxy clincher the other day and I saw Columbus lose...

I am trying to get into soccer a little more and wanna follow this. Is it aggregate scoring again next round? Doesnt somebody play tonight?

Houston and the Galaxy play. I think its still home and home until the Finals, so its still aggregate. Should be a good match, to bad its at 11pm EST. Stupid on MLS's part, but I guess that's the only time ESPN2 had for them.

The semi finals are not aggregates. They are single games, played at the location of the higher seed. The 11:00pm slot is pretty normal with the game being in LA. Over the years the games played at 11:00pm have not done bad at all in the ratings.LA-Houston in LA at 11:00pmEST tonight on ESPN2Chi-RSL in Chicago at 8:00pmEST on Saturday on FSCFinal is in Seattle, Sunday Nov 22 at 8:30pmEST on ESPN

Yes. Tomorrow, 9AM central on FSC. Is ESPN carrying any of the UEFA play-offs? I thought I saw a promo for Russia-Slovenia but it isn't showing up on my guide.

Last time Adu came up someone posted that Freddy is equivalent to a QB who is smart enough to do very well at the college level but lacks the physical attributes to play in the NFL. I think that is a good analogy for Adu. He's not able to do the things he does well against world-class competition, at least not yet.

i thought Adu looked great in the 3 friendlies the US played a while back (didnt they play England, Argentina and somebody else?). He looked dangerous on the ball and it was clear that the opposing defenders knew he was a force to be reckoned with. Not sure what has happeend since then.

Germany stunned by Enke's suicide death
Over 35000 people in the streets of Hanover yesterday during the memorial. It was for the last two days the dominating news event in Germany. I haven´t seen something like this before.
Something kind of freaky about this is Uli Hesse-Lichtenberger's piece just one week before on soccernet called Chased by the Black Dog, about depression and football.
What is it with Germans and committing suicide via train? Doesn't seem like a good way to go.

He played really well against Spain. That was definitely the high watermark for him so far with the senior team.

one thing is very very clear. He does not seem to ingratiate himself with any club coach. And this is not just a single club coach, this is now 5 or 6 in a row that he has failed to impress over the years. In an ironic way, I hope he is still clueless as to how much work and dedication it takes to be a pro because if he has already figured it out, then I am unsure what his upside can be at this point.

i thought Adu looked great in the 3 friendlies the US played a while back (didnt they play England, Argentina and somebody else?). He looked dangerous on the ball and it was clear that the opposing defenders knew he was a force to be reckoned with. Not sure what has happeend since then.
one thing is very very clear.
He doesn't seem clueless in interviews. I have never read an interview by a coach or teammate that dogs him. I'm not saying they don't exist though. It almost seems like politics somehow said: Adu does not play in Europe.Would it be in his best interest to play MLS next year? My guess is that he is under a contract so that may not be a choice. Can he do a reverse Beckham and go on loan to an MLS team. I just want to see him on the field.
