Refs starting to lose control of the Arsenal/Hull game here with a nice melee in the 43rd minute...Arsenal look terrible, but it should be an interesting second half...

6/6 in titles for Barcelona since May. Copa del Rey, La Liga, Champions =League, Euro Supercup, Supercopa Espana, and Club World Cup.

 Visca Barça! :)

Breaking news: announcers in the Arsenal game reporting that Mark Hughes has been sacked by Manchester City and replaced with Roberto Mancini

Also, let's not fail to note that Fulham absolutely crushed United 3-0 at Craven Cottage today, and cellar-dwellers Pompey dropped Liverpool even further in the hole with a 2-0 win...

Unpack that for me...I get they canned Hughes...they talked about it all game during the City game...but who is that fella they replaced him with?

Quality Italian manager. Used to manage Inter, Lazio, and Fiorentina....most well-known for managing Inter these past few years before being replaced in favor of Jose Mourinho...

ok cool, I wasnt sure if the "shocking" was for the firing or for the replacement.

A little of both...I've always thought Hughes was a good manager, and I'm sure he'll land in the EPL somewhere soon...Mancini is a pretty great replacement though....kinda makes me think that they didn't fire Hughes because of poor performance, they just saw an upgrade available and jumped at the chance.ETA: wonder what the chances are of Hughes to Liverpool in a few weeks...

I loved Hughes as a player during his stint with Chelsea in the mid-late 90's. Hughes, Zola and Vialli won an FA Cup and a UEFA Cup in those years, with Vialli as a player/manager. Those were great years. I really wanted Chelsea to hire him as was rumored when they fired Grant a few years ago and was disappointed to see him go to City. He had a really tough job at City and I don't think he was given the chance he deserved - hope and expect him to land on his feet somewhere soon.

Wow. Lots of news this weekend.

1) Manure gets thumped by Fulham 3-0 - huge blow to their title hopes as they potentially fall 6 points behind Chelsea with a win tomorrow

2) Liverpool continues it downward spiral - Rafa may not survive another year if this continues

3) Landon signs with Everton for the remainder of the year - good news for the USNT

4) City hires Mancini - this, as much of the money, is whats going to push them over the top. A stylish, top flight Itallian Manager with an impeccable resume

5) Champions League Draw - Milan-Manchester United and Cheslea-Inter headline

6) A Demarcus Beasely sighting in Glasgow! There was a nice article on him and Maurice Edu in this weeks ESPN the magazine. He seems ancient but hes still only 27 yrs old. Wonder if hell ever regain some of those wheels that made him so dangerous in 2002-2004

7) 38 year old Brad Friedel keeps another clean sheet as Aston Villa win again and tie Arsenal for third in the EPL. He holds the record for most consecutive Premier League appearances (207)

From Yanks Abroad, re: Devann Yao... gives me the answer to the question I asked earlier:

After impressing Ipswich coach Roy Keane in a trial, Devann Yao is expected to weigh his options with an impending offer from the Championship club on the table and a pair of possible trials in the works. The winger caught the eye of Keane in a November trial prompting the team to express an interest in signing the New York native to a contract until the end of the season, however negotiations are currently being held up due to his prior stints in several other youth academies across Europe."Since he's been a youth player at various clubs there's a lot of paper work to be confirmed and agreed before we we can offer a deal to him," Ipswich Town press officer Steve Pearce told YA.As Yao had previously spent time in the programs of French club FC Metz, AS Livorno and Pisa in Italy, and St. Mirren of the Scottish Premier League, FIFA regulations state that compensation must be provided to one or more of the programs with which he trained as a youth.Nevertheless, the club remains eager to table and offer for the former Red Bull New York trialist, while admitting they could face possible competition from other unnamed clubs also attempting to bring Yao for trial stints."The club is definitely talking to him with a view to offer him a contract," Pearce explained, admitting "but there's a couple [other] clubs interested in him joining them on trial as well so it's down to what Devann and his agent decide to do."Raised in Harlem, New York, Yao has held multiple passports from birth due to his Italian mother and French-Ivorian father, eliminating the hurdle of acquiring a work permit which often hinders American players from making the move to England. As they seek to make arrangements to move forward, the club has shown enough confidence in their hopeful signing to allow him to continue working with the team as they work through the red tape still holding up a contract offer."He's still [training] with us at the moment," he clarifies. "It will be down to him if he signs it or if he takes up the opportunity to go to these other other clubs on trial."

From Yanks Abroad, re: Devann Yao... gives me the answer to the question I asked earlier:
Does anyone know what position he at his best at?If he signs for Ipswich and can play on the left he would probably get some playing time straight away. I really hope he signs.By the way Ipswich have got 10 straight undefeated to climb out of the bottom three. Postponed today against S####horpe due to frozen pitch.

lol @ the language filter. There's not enough here for me to figure out who you're talking about.

Awesome! Scun thorpe.

Bayern drub Hertha Berlin today 5-2 today with goals from van Buyten, Gomez, Robben, Müller and Olic.

München finish the year on a 4-0 league run and outscoring teams 15-4 to rise to third in the table at the Winter break; Two points behind Bayer Leverkusen and one point behind Schalke 04.

haven't seen man city yet this year so i'm watching a replay now. robinho isn't starting? has this been the case for a while?

is anyone else watching Chelsea-West Ham? I was only half paying attention so I may have missed something but there was a situation where Cech came way off his line and a defender went back towards the goal, making Cech's position where the offside line would be. A couple of West Ham guys were behind that line and called offside. I thought I heard the announcers say it shouldn't have been offside and the studio guy for FSC just said the same thing during halftime. As I said I wasn't really paying attention and obviously the announcers and the FSC guy know the rules so what did I miss?

Watching it now, but I didn't see much of the first half. at this ref continually making Lampard re-kick the penalty kicks....he's making the right call though...

well, if you don't count the fact that it shouldn't have been a penalty to begin with he is

I was choosing not to comment on that....

I think it is only until mid March, not for the remainder of the season. The deal with MLS is to make sure he does not miss a game with the Galaxy.http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id...mls&cc=5901

"The loan, from January until mid-March, will finish in time for Donovan to return to the MLS for the Galaxy's opening match on March 27."

Fun end-o'-decade stuff at ESPN...

10 Best players of the decade:

Gianluigi Buffon

Steven Gerrard

Thierry Henry

Kaka

Paolo Maldini

Lionel Messi

Ronaldinho

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo

Zinedine Zidane

Would've preferred to see a "team-o'-decade" by position, instead of just taking a bunch of great players... but still fun. Really glad to see Zizou get the nod by readers as player of the decade- without a doubt, the best player I've ever seen play (live)- which includes a lot of the greats (Best, Maradonna, Matteus).

A few days late for me, but :lmao: They sure left it for late, but got the job done. Pedro's header was nice and Alves' cross to Messi was perfect - it isn't often you see a match-winner driven home with the chest.I can only imagine Pep's negotiating leverage as he's in the last year of his contract. "My justification for a (huge) raise?" *points to the trophy case* :lmao:

If Stevie G can get them the ball they might score a lot of goals. I dunno though, personally I think Maldini is getting a little old to run around the entire backline on his own.

Actually, I can live with Maldini in a top 10 of the 90's but saying that he has been the best defender in the world for the last 10 years is ridiculous.

Pretty entertaining scoreless first half between Arsenal and Villa. I know some of it has to do with the guys in front of them but does anyone else think that Friedel is playing quite a bit better than Howard right now? Also, Dempsey has been amazing lately. Here's to hoping he keeps it up through the summer.

Fabregas with an unbelievable free kick. Announcer: "If Fabregas can't get into Spain's midfield for the World Cup, then get your money in on Spain." Really laying on the Tebow treatment.
