Clint Dempsey scores a fantastic goal! He chips the ball over the scrambling goalkeeper from outside the box. Goal of a lifetime from the Texan. That was amazing from the American.

Ok. Nobody else thought he was just trying to put the ball in a dangerous spot at the back post and not shooting? No way he was trying to beat the GK from there based on his movement with the ball beforehand (I don't think he looked even once at the GK's positioning). At least, that's my 2c. Great goal, but I doubt Dempsey would ever admit that he lucked it in.
I choose to believe I witnessed brilliance!

El Floppo did you see this?

Seriously, this is getting old how the MetroBulls continue to have weird things happen.

Yes that is the magnificent new stadium just to the right of the fire in Harrison :pickle:

the ####?

checking on this right now...
:goodposting: You good with the photoshop, andy?

I'm getting nothing on the news about this.
no, this was not a joke. Hopefully the picture just looked worse than it was and the transit will be restored in time for the gamehttp://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2010/03...g_major_br.html

We were talking earlier about how cursed the MetroBulls have been. In case anyone is wondering what the genesis was of the curse, it is pretty easy to trace it all the way back to the team opening home game in front of a huge crowd...It went all down hill from here.

That wasn't just some run of the mill own goal. That had quite a flair to it.

If I remember the story correctly, Corricula was a seasoned pro from Italy and never had an own goal in his whole life. He went on to have at least one more than year for the old Metrostars.

I thought he was crossing it until it went in. Now I don't care. Great freaking goal.

Well, that was a better way to start a new era.

Getting to the game:

HELLO, PATH train! Took it from the World Trade Center stop (hadn't been down there in a month or two- great to see the actual tower framed up maybe 10 floors above street level)- trains left every 15 minutes for a 20 minute trip to Harrison.

Lots of Red/Star and Brazil shirts on the way- felt like going to see a game in Europe, except nobody was singing... so I guess not like traveling to see a game in Europe. But it was great to see all the fans heading out via public transportaion.

PATH stop was literally across the street from the stadium- a short walk and you're there. Awesome.

Downside- we got out there early and our train wasn't full, but the PATH stop heading out is not set up to handle crowds, one small stair case heading off of a small platform. Even with our uncrowded train, it was backed up pretty bad just trying to get off the platform and out of the station. This was something in the back of our minds about leaving the game later.

Stadium:

Looks really good from the outside- I particularly liked the fabric scrim that makes up the roof. Pretty bare-bones on the inside, but that's fine.

As soon as we climbed up to the concourse that wraps the stadium under the seats, you could tell there were problems. The concourse is fairly narrow, and they had concessions set up on either side of it directly opposite eachother. This led to lines forming perpindularly to the concessions stands and stretching across immediately blocking the concourse. Circulation nightmare all through the stadium. They'll figure out to organize the lines so that go parallel to the concourse, or it's going to be a problem every game.

That said- and I'm sure it comes across on TV- but inside the stadium proper that place is amazing. I haven't seen a game in a soccer specific stadium in... guh- no idea. Even most of the games I've seen in Europe were in bigger stadiums with tracks and whatnot. Every seat in here felt like you were right on the field... so cool. We were in the upper deck towards the corner (on the same endline as the Metro supporters), and it was still amazing. But next game, I'm trying to get on the lower tier so we're really right on the field.

Game:

I was there with two GBs and their respective 9 yo kids, so I was a little distracted from just watching the game. But what I saw of the Bullstars looked like a big improvement from last year. They're still a little weak through the central MF, but much better disciplined in their shape. I was very impressed wtih the new rookie CB Tim Ream- nicely controlled with the ball at his feet and smart in the tackle and positioning. Can't believe they trotted Petke back out there, but wtf. Kandji and and forward mate (soulou?) worked really well off of each other with one guy showing and the other cutting. Both were fast and strong and willing to take guys on to go at goal. Maybe some poor decisions once they got the ball, but overall I liked what they did. Made me forget that Angel wasn't there- can't ask for more from a backup.

Teh Brazilians looked a bit slow- especially their #10 who, despite being amazing with the ball at feet, killed his team by getting beat by the REdbull's speed. Oh yeah- I was impressed with the speed of the Redbulls on both sides of the ball. Those forwards were routinely beating defenders to space and getting behind them.

Dane Richards  ... I was tooting his horn last year- what a freaking goal.

Leaving:

With subs coming in en masse and the prospect of 25,000 people trying to squeeze up one little stai, we decided to leave after 65 minutes. Very easy, but it must've been a mess later.

Great report!! I would love to see a US game their some day.

With just 25,000?
absolutely. The best atmosphere and US based support has always come in the smaller stadiums. Columbus, Portland etc. The bigger the stadium, the more likely the US faces an away game while at home.NY will be tough to place many qualifying games just because of the melting pot nature but their may be one or two that would work.

Yeah, I think the location rather than the stadium size was more a factor in Portland and Columbus.

I kept thinkgin about US games here... but I seriuosly doubt there will be any of consequence. Even against a Brazilian club team, I'd say almost half the crowd (or more) were there wearing yellow and cheering (more loudly) for Santos. Every non-US soccer fan in the area seems to route for the other guy, and show up en masse to games. That Gold Cup final at Giant's stadium was brutal last summer- probably on order of 90% pro-Mexican- and I imagine CONCACAF games would be pretty similar, with every Central Amercian and Caribbean fan showing up just to route against the US. It's almost too bad the Redbulls' supporter sections are so hermetically separate from the rest of the stadium- they were really the only people cheering with gusto and it was hard to join in wtih them so distinctly apart from the rest of us. Also- the stadium is pretty echo-ey... tough to hear much of what was going on or being said (fan cheers or loudspeaker).

Some other thoughts from the game...

The turf looked like ####. Layer of sand right at the surface that kicked up with every touch and bounch- lots of guys losing their footing out there much like... ugh... turf-grass. Speaking of- while on line for a drink, I started talking to a guy with a badge who worked for the Redbulls or the Stadium. I mentioned how bad the grass looked and he replied that the entire Eastern/Souther side had died last week and was replaced hastily. Lack of sun (blocked by the pretty new roof that covers all the spectators' heads), he said. Nice. He said they were seriously considering going with turf-grass. Nice.

Yeah, that was pretty apparent on TV too.And I wasn't kidding about the camera work. I bet the ball was not in shot easily 10-15% of the game.

ok, i'm at my wit's end and need help.

Union kickoff in 3 days. I have no Union apparel. I can't find anything bigger than 2X online and I have no idea where in Philadelphia the Union are selling merchandise, other than their web site.

Any other Philadelphia residents who know where I can find a T-shirt or Jersey?

Holy ####- I dvr-ed the game and watched it... you really WEREN'T kidding. I was hoping to see some of the build up play on the goals. Nope. I think 10-15% is actually a little conservative- maybe closer to 20. Good gravy- is it that hard to move the camera around and keep the ball in frame? Not like they were trying to anticpate the play, the way the Italian and English camera men do- they just literally couldn't find the ball. And as nice as the sightlines are in there- what a ####### disaster if they ####ed up the design to the point of not thinking about whether the all-grass field might need a little sun. Bad enough having to play Red-Rover any time you stepped foot onto the too narrow concourse... but blocking out the sun for the grass with the swanky roof?

next time, hire me as the architect AND the camera man.

lol, yeah, thanks. i'm starting a diet and going to be exercising. but i still want something to wear thursday night and april 10. if i could at least find a store - ****'s, modell's, whatever - i could see just how tight a 2X is. i do wear some 2X, but not all fits well.
I've seen Union jerseys at both ****'s and Modell's in the areas (specifically Modell's in KOP Mall and ****'s in Collegeville). Otherwise, try this site.

I can't believe the Union has their first real game tomorrow. Been waiting years for this. I know the SOB's will be out in full force (and full voice) at Qwest tomorrow night.

thanks. found a place called Angelo's in Berwyn that I'm going to hit up Thursday before the game. If they don't have anything, I will try Modell's at KOP Mall. I swear they had nothing in January when I was there.

So, I'm fortunate enough to be going on a South America trip here soon.

Was wondering if any of you fellas have some suggestions regarding watching some live football in Buenos Aires or Rio? Might be spending a little time in Santiago as well.

TIA.

The weblink is Angelo's Soccer Corner's site - I just didn't know where their stores were. I hear they have a lot of Union stuff.
