So, I'm fortunate enough to be going on a South America trip here soon. Was wondering if any of you fellas have some suggestions regarding watching some live football in Buenos Aires or Rio? Might be spending a little time in Santiago as well.TIA.
Well, you've got Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Fluminense & Botafogo in Rio and Boca Juniors, River Plate, Huracan, Independiente, Racing, San Lorenzo, and Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires. Take your pick.Oh yeah,LOOK AT ME! I'M GOING TO SOUTH AMERICA!

I can't believe the Union has their first real game tomorrow. Been waiting years for this. I know the SOB's will be out in full force (and full voice) at Qwest tomorrow night.
it is amazing that it has been 15 years before MLS got into Phili. Hopefully this will be the start of something good.I am not convinced starting the Union off on national TV in front of a hostile away crowd was the best scheduling decision though.Ted, how are tickets moving for the first game at Lincoln?

that's nothing. At worst its a slightly sarcastic article. The real dumb ones will come out before the world cup where the idiot columnists pull out their once every 4 years soccer bashing article. Sad but still very predictable.
 And that's a terribly poorly written article too.
Steve, you probably already heard this but Toronto was chosen to host MLS Cup this year. That could be a very cold day.

The new MLS web site is launching today.

The new address will be www.mlssoccer.com

For now, you can access the new site from the old address www.mlsnet.com

I have to say the new site looks very nice. They are still transferring some of the history and stats over from the old site but in general the look and feel is pretty slick.

There are also Colo Colo, Universidad Católica, and Universidad de Chile matches to choose from in Santiago.

 to ESPN for giving the MLS another shot in primetime after the low ratings. Thursday night MLS primetime was great, and I was disappointed when they went to a disjointed schedule and moved away from the Thursday night games. It's great especially in the summer when I don't really have a lot of sports to watch (not really a big baseball fan). Loving the looks of May and July already with the game every week.

Agreed on tonight's game being a tough one to start. They've built what looks like a solid defense (with a talented albeit inexperienced keeper in Seitz), but they're lacking up front and in the midfield - again, some nice talent, but mostly very young, plus Fred is out tonight, serving a one-game suspension for a red card he got at the end of last season. Hopefully they don't get rolled and who knows, maybe even eke out a result, but really tonight is just about finally having a team to call our own.Haven't heard an exact number on the Linc matches lately, but capacity for the two Linc games (vs DCU Apr 10 and FCD mid-May) is the lower bowl, or about 38k. Union's up over 10k season tickets sold, plus in addition to the general sale, the season tix holders were offered the opportunity to purchase addl tix in a presale, plus I'd expect a large travelling contingent from DC for that match. Add it all up, and I could easily see 30-35k if not a sellout for the first match. The second match against FC Dallas? Steep drop I'd guess, I'd be happy with at least 18k (which would basically be a PPL Park sellout), but they've only really started advertising the team in earnest here so we'll see what kind of traction they get.The other cool thing is that the season tix holders are guaranteed 17 games, the 15 reg season games and two extras, which could be USOC, playoffs, int'l friendlies, etc. They announced the first of the two extras, which will be a friendly against Valencia at the end of July. There have been rumors for a few months about Manchester City and/or Celtic doing US tours this summer so one of those might also be a possibility.

Even though they've been poor lately, I'd kill to see Boca play at La Bombonera... looks to be one of the most intense places on the planet to catch a game.

This.My father (who grew up in Chile and has been going to South America on business for the last 15 years or so) says seeing Boca Juniors play a home match is electric and borderline frightening. He's seen World Cup finals, South American WC qualifiers, Juventus-Milan for the Scudetto, and Barcelona-Real Madrid matches and he says the Boca-River Plate matches in La onera were definitely the most intense matches he's attended.

Isn't Boca-River Plate considered one of the most famous sporting events in the world?I've always wanted to see a game at Maracana. But it doesn't hold 200,000 anymore.

Dunno what happened to my writing... the stadium is called La Bombonera.

Maracana... is that the one in Rio? I remember reading Pele's autobiography (can't recommend that enough) and was struck by his recollection of playing in that, or another HUGE stadium, for the first time.

Superclassico. Insanity, even watching on TV. I went to a Milan derby when I was there... amazing, but the Superclassico looks even more intense. But I'd say ANY Boca home game would be pretty cool to catch.

sidenote- one of my old firms did a couple of stadiums in the run up to the '78? WC in Argentina.

This could be a very long year for the Union. They're just too young. While the Sounders have the Freddys and the top pick from 2009, the Union has ... a guy with a mohawk and Sebastian Le Toux. Torres looks like he will be good, Mwanga was mw-average. Just a huge difference between Zakuani and Mwanga.

The card in the first minute was a joke. Jesus. And three cards in the first half including a red - that's poor organization.

I still think the Union should have had the honor of hosting the season opener, like Seattle did last year.

I've set the o/u on scoring the first Union goal at May xx, whatever the date of the second 'home' game at the Linc is.

Its hard to believe we just got younger on the field while I was typing this.

Oh, and Seattle - your field looks like crap.

Mwanga did nothing, but to be fair, he was playing his professional debut out of position. He is not a central midfielder, and hopefully never will be again.Torres definitely looks like a keeper - a lot of poise on the ball for an 18-year old. I look forward to seeing more of Jack Mack as well.Beyond that, not too many positives, though I thought they held their composure well in the 2nd half. That could have easily been a 4-0 or 5-0 scoreline.Oh, and I hope they think long and hard about the gold shorts/blue shirt combo again. Didn't look right.

my wife said it was a horrific looking uniform. about the only positive is we don't have some BS company's logo taking up the front of the jersey.i don't know about mwanga. playing out of position - yeah, compared to where he played in college. but you think after 1 half of 1 game, they are going to say, 'we made a mistake. we need to put him back at forward.'? i mean, that's why they had 3 months of camps, several exhibition games. i'm not saying he won't play up there eventually, but i doubt it will be in the home opener.

I don't really get the hate for logos on the front of soccer team's uniforms. A lot of people point to it when making fun of the professional game.

i wasn't making fun of it and i understand its purpose. it allows teams to play outrageous amounts of money for players and it allows the game to be shown commercial-free. if the choices were commercials or logos, i'll take the logos every time. i just like the fact that the union doesn't have one.

It's official: I'll be at the Union home opener and seeing my first sporting event at Lincoln Financial Field April 10. Section 138. Row 33. Guess that's pretty far back. Seats 7 and 8.

Can't wait.

I only saw highlights but not sure there were any in particular that he could have done much with. Two were PKs. It was just a turkey shoot. United responded this afternoon as well (0-4 at Bolton).

forgot to dvr the red bulls match to see the new stadium. damnit.espn and its family doesn't replay mls does it?
not that I am aware of. Check www.mlssoccer.com, maybe you can watch the game from there archives. The stadium and fans looked and sounded great. Not the best team in the world to support but t least its better than the mess last year.

 The grass still looks like ####. And the team looked pretty bleh against what appeared to be a dominant Fire. Kandje didn't pair at all well with Angel compared to the guy he partnereed with vs Santos, and Dane Richards looked lost- turning and running at the same guy (ineffectively, since the defender matched his pace) over and over and over....I think I said this after last week, but the central and left side of the MF doesn't look competitive, even for the MLS. We'll see about the D- keeper looks quite good at shot-blocking (he was amazing vs Santos). Regardless, Still good to get the W.

It's a good game already. Mad attacking going on. End to end action... the definition of a Derby. You can see the emotion on the pitch.

Atlético is going to need some luck to hold this lead as Real can bring it at the drop of a hat. CRonaldo nearly scored when going 1on 4 and taking it half the field. Real looks to be settling down unfortunately.

Can't believe Real got denied on the line so many times.

Thiago came up huge to deny Higuaín there. You see the Real fans cheer when Perea came on? He's a foul and ####-up machine.

Gah. That's some terrible set piece defense there. I'm bummed that Reyes got subbed there. He and simao bring such great attacking from the wings.

It sure looks like atleti is closing its mojo this half.

Annnnnnnnnnd Atlético de Madrid has fallen apart once again. Jesus what ####e play at the back. It's as if they're the GD Washington Generals back there.

A couple of things I'm curious about:

1) Has England had its version of Monday Night Football longer than the U.S. and is it as popular?

2) How do ticket prices for EPL compare to MLS? I was kind of shocked how expensive MLS tickets are, at least to the Sounders and to the Union's opener. Obviously, the market is bearing it in Seattle. Only time will tell in Philly, but I don't think it will. Though I think tickets at PPL Park are cheaper.

On SBI this afternoon, there's a report that Man Utd is doing a North American Tour this summer, including visits to Boston, Philadelphia ( ), Toronto and Houston for the 2010 MLS All-Star Game.

1. Yes, there's a Monday night Premier League game. It's broadcast live in the US on FSC2. Much tougher and pricier tickets in England. They're more akin to NFL prices than MLS.

I don't think #1 is accurate. The EPL's schedule is staggered and they often don't have a game on Monday night primetime. I'd think that it's less than 50% of the gameweeks. A few years ago, they tried the NFL-style Monday Night Football concept and I seem to remember it flopping - or at least not doing well enough to keep around. There are games on Monday nights every so often, along with occasional Tuesday and Wednesday games, but it's not a set schedule like the NFL when they have a game literally every week in primetime.I believe that England has had its version of MNF, if you can even call it that, less than the US, and it's not as popular.ETA - "popular" being a relative term. I'm sure that a lot of people watch the games because it's a primetime soccer game, but from a business/cultural standpoint, MNF is far more popular/important.

But nowhere near as long as MNF. As a matter of fact, as late as the mid-80s (after that someone else is going to have to answer) every league game started at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Don't know when Monday Night matches started, but I do remember ESPN2 showing Monday Night Premier League in the mid-90's (IIRC, on tape delay at 7PM Eastern - rolled right into MNF at 9)

Bayern have only ever lost once to Manchester United, back on 26 May 1999 – but it was the most traumatic defeat in club history, and sends a shudder down the spine of the FCB faithful even to this day. The clock at Camp Nou in Barcelona had already stopped at 90 minutes, indicating normal time was up. Goal-scorer Mario Basler and his team-mates were on their feet, ready to don winners’ T-shirts and caps.Franz Beckenbauer had already set off for the trophy presentation, in the company of then UEFA President Lennart Johansson and diehard Munich fan Boris Becker. “We got into the lift with the score 1-0 to Bayern,” Becker later related, “from inside the lift, we heard celebrations. We thought to ourselves: OK, that’s the final whistle. A few moments later, as we made our way up the tunnel towards the pitch, we saw the United players celebrating, and the Bayern players prostrate on the turf. I thought: Damn, they’ve equalised. And then I glanced up at the scoreboard: 2-1! We just stared at each other in disbelief.”Bayern had indeed fallen just over 100 seconds short of a massive coup, but Teddy Sheringham (90+1) and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer (90+3) earned United arguably the most dramatic Champions League triumph of them all. Eleven years have passed since that fateful night, but the game is a hot topic once again in the build-up to Bayern’s quarter-final meeting with the Premier League giants. The United squad even includes four players who were part of events in Barcelona: Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Wes Brown and Paul Scholes, although the latter was suspended for the final.Unbeaten home and awayHowever, all four are keenly aware of the Red Devils’ previous difficulties with Germany’s most successful club. The 1999 victory was United’s only win against Bayern in seven attempts, as the record shows four draws and two wins for Munich. The neutral ground of Barcelona aside, FCB are undefeated against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, winning once and drawing twice both home and away.Overall, Munich boast an excellent record against English teams, especially at home. FCB have only lost once such match in Bavaria, a 2-1 defeat to Norwich City in the second round of the 1993-4 UEFA Cup. In all their matches against English clubs, Bayern have won 11, drawn 12 and lost eight.Promising omensBayern last met United some eight years ago in the 2001-2 second group stage, the sides drawing 1-1 in Munich and 0-0 in Manchester. The clubs had met at the quarter-final stage the previous season, Bayern winning 1-0 in Manchester and 2-1 at the Olympic stadium, going on from there to claim the trophy.

My six year old started laughing so hard when Olic scored.."How would you like it if I take my shirt off at practice dad!!!!!!!"
