I was actually thinking about Olic as I read this but Vidic didn't kick him in the shin. That looked painful.I sort of took this like Christo actually. People complain that a guy gets fouled and then writhes around but I've been spiked a bunch over the years and it ####### hurts. It may not always look that bad but mostly it is the initial sting and then 10 seconds later the adrenaline kicks in. I think the theatrics are a bit much at times but then again I know there have been times when I thought my ankle was broken and 30 seconds later I was up and playing.
Actually, I don't. I've seen people in this very thread claim that a player made a dive when it was clearly a foul. I've also seen people claim that a player wasn't really hurt when he was fouled based upon his "recovery" time. Anyone who has played the game knows that it doesn't take muchto knock you off your feet when running at full speed. And anyone who's been whacked in the shins knows if hurts like #### initially but you can usually run it off fairly quickly.

You guys are gonna see WHY el niño was sold off when EL KUN comes to town! (not to mention Forlán and Reyes too)Both teams are in similar straights this year. Both are sucking domestically, although Atlético has an outside shot at making Europa league by moving from 10th position to 6th (they are 5 points behind how).Does the Europa Cup winner get an automatic bid into the competition next year?If neither team makes Europa, there will certainly be some departures. Kuyt? Torres? Asenjo? Reyes? Forlán? el Kun?

Actually, I think the Europa Cup winner makes the Champion's League Group Stage. Shaktar and Zenit both did.

No worries. It is a pretty confusing process once you get past the AQs and into the tiered wildcards. I tried figuring it out when I moved out here but I figured I would just root for the home team and not have to worry about it.

Shaktar wasn't in the CL group stage this year. Got knocked out in the playoff round and then sent to the Europa League.But to answer Z's original question, the Europa League winner does automatically qualify to the Europa League again if they don't qualify for European competition any other way.

I have Gomez play many times in MLS. He also has been capped a couple of times. He is not a bad player but he does seem to have found a scoring touch. Could be worse things to do then take a player who is on form compared to some of the choices we have.Herculez Gomez, who couldn't get any run in MLS for years. For instance, Gomez couldn't beat out Casey for a spot in Colorado (in fairness, I think they tried to play him in MF).So apparently some guy named Herculez is tearing up the Mexican League and might get a shot at forward if Davies isnt ready

agreed, but there are plenty of times when a guy will literally go untouched then flop around on the ground to try and get a foul. you know that this happens.

I mostly watch the EPL. It happens so infrequently in the English game it's really not a consideration. But Italians, Spaniards and S. Americans do like to make a meal out of it.

I can see that.However, the physicality does detract from the "beauty" of the game somewhat. At times it can get a bit thuggish, although I would prefer less flopping in la liga.The passing and flow of the game is superior in la liga in general though.

for sure. everyone plays like arsenal in spain. there's something to be said for cherishing possession and keeping the ball on the ground. i just cant get past the theatrics sometimes.

The Phili Union will play their first home game ever this weekend.
The last time a mens outdoor pro league game was played in Phili was way back in 1980.
The first game will be Lincoln Financial Field.
The new stadium in Chester is not due to open until June 27.

I'm rethinking the Mad Dog in the Fog location to watch the game.
I'm slated to go to a wedding later on that day (4:00 PM ceremony) in San Rafael.
Soooooo, it might be better to try and find a place to watch the game up in Marin. Any Bay Area peeps that can give me a rec for catching el clasico in the North Bay?

Back from the Linc for the Union's 'home' opener. There were 34,480 of us there. Would have liked to have topped 40K. Really wanted to break the league attendance record. Oh well.
Great start to the game, up 2-0. A couple of beautiful goals and great assists (from Torres and Moreno). Should have gone up 3-0 early in the second on a Le Toux breakaway. Great save/play by DC keeper - and then all hell broke loose.
All I can say is, if you haven't seen the game, watch the second half. In particular, the second DC goal. I challenge you to think of something a professional athlete has done that has been so pathetic as the Union goalkeeper's play on the second goal. Seriously. I wouldn't expect that from a u-6 goalie.
Got the deserved late goal from Le Toux to complete the hat trick - I think it was Moreno who was fouled just outside the box on a bit of a breakaway. Nice free kick, well placed by Le Toux. He can do it all.
Clearly, DC is a better team with Jaime Moreno on the field. I guess he just doesn't have 90 or even 60 minutes in him anymore? But their defense is awful.
On to thoughts on the Union: I ripped them pretty good after the first game, so I'll give them their due in game 2. Much improved. Mwanga didn't play. Two best players are clearly Torres and Le Toux with Moreno a close third. Califf is OK in the back and Arietta played pretty well. The left side of the defense is just an absolute sieve. The left back, in particular, needs to head to the bench. They are going to give up a lot of goals when they face really good forwards.
The crowd was big, and supportive, especially when something good - or bad - happened. Very negative to the refs I thought and to the DC players. But that's what we get in Philly.
The crowd was disappointingly subdued in my area (midfieldish, about 12 yards away actually). The Sons of Ben sections, however, were jumping. Looked like a heck of a lot of fun to be in those sections. If only they were centrally located and not on the goal line. Oh well.
It was also my first time in the Linc. Place is pretty awesome for a football stadium.
