yeah, I have no idea how Zanetti doesn't make the Argentine side. He's been fantastic of late. He's extremely versatile, and a great leader.

Holy crap, Maradonna selected Collocini? The guy who almost single-handedly got Newcastle relegated last year? And Jonas Guiteriez? Yikes.

Wouldn't be surprised if Maradona feels threatened by ZanettiHave to figure Zanetti realizes Maradona is a moron coach, and it's quite possible he has expressed that view in the locker room, where one would assume he carries a lot of influenceMaradona is much happier with yes men and players who idolize him and/or are indebted to him for their inclusionThe more I think about it, the greater the likelihood of Argentina not making it out of group becomesNigeria FTW

Sportsbook.com has props for teams making or not making the knock out rounds, with Argentina at a tempting +450 to not make it through. In addition to Zanetti, I also noted Riquelme is not on the team - one of the better field generals if I recall correctly from WC 2006. I know Messi wears #10, but he's not really a #10 kind of player.

One of the first things Maradona did as coach was utterly alienate Riquelme to the point where he immediately retired form the national team (not that Maradona would have chosen him anyway)Riquelme has lost a step, but could still help this team in the MF

Just saw the guy play in person in BA...he´s better than pretty much everybody on the US squad in the middle minus Donovan based on what I saw.

Goalkeepers- Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan

Defenders- Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Spector, Jay DeMerit, Clarence Goodson, Jonathan Bornstein, Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall

Midfielders- Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Jose Francisco Torres, Alejandro Bedoya, DaMarcus Beasley, Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Rogers

Forwards- Jozy Altidore, Conor Casey, Brian Ching, Edson Buddle, Eddie Johnson, Herculez Gomez

eta: no Davies :goodposting: and no Adu :goodposting: but yes DMB? wtf.
Good for Buddle and Gomez (and even Eddie to a degree) for having their good form being rewarded, but man, that list of forwards is....uninspiring. Davies wasn't the best player on the roster, but he was possibly the most irreplaceable. It's really going to hurt to not have him.
A guy like DMB is worthless imho...Adu should be on this team....yes he has weaknesses but he has strengths that few on the US have.Bradley is sending a message but he´s hurting our chances by doing so.

If Gooch isn´t 100 percent I have very little hope this squad can compete with England.

And I still think the shark move is to put Dempsey up top unless Buddle is for real...the rest have proven they can´t compete at this level.

About to don my Forlán jersey, my Atlético hat, and carry my Atlético scarf to the sports bar for a nice, long lunch.

AUPA ATLETI!!!!!

FORZA ATLETI!!!!

VIVA LOS COLCHONEROS!!!!

HELLS YEAH!!

Klestjan is garbage and Rogers is almost as bad.

Their inclusion on even the 30 man roster has ZERO upside.

Like everyone, I'm disappointed in Adu's production and attitude. He doesn't "deserve" to make the 23 man roster.

But I'd still take him over either Sasha or Rogers. they stink.

Dempsey in at 55. According to commentary, Fulham is 4-1-1 in cup games where Dempsey entered as sub.

ESPN's predicted US starting lineup

While guessing England's starting lineup is next to impossible, the likely U.S. XI remains relatively predictable. Of course, injuries, camp form and performance in the three final tune-ups could change things between now and the curtain-raiser. Which is why we'll give you our picks for the opener each week until the tourney begins. This time, we'll go with:

GK: Tim Howard

D: Jonathan Spector, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra

M: Stuart Holden, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Landon Donovan

F: Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore

Link

I like Dempsey up front.

Thanks guys.

Just got back to the office now.

Wow, that was dicey there for the middle of the 2nd half. Atletico looked tired, but I do have to say they looked like the more skillful (and dangerous) team.

Forlán just knows how to score plain and simple, Both his goals came with deflections, but I'll take em. Agüero's skill with the ball at his feet is undeniable. He is a bit small, and may not have the right type of game for England. he was absoluetley dwarfed by Fulham's center backs.

For once the Atlético defense didn't let down. Perea and Ujfalusi both had good games, minimal minstakes. De Gea had a couple of very good saves. Raúl Garcia and Assunçao left something to be desired in the middle of the park. Xavi they are not. I thought Reyes and Simao did well, and Jurado and Salvio simply weren't as good.

Anyway, I'm proud of my Atleti. They made something out of a downer of a season, and they now have an outside chance at keeping Agüero (although if they get 40m GBP for him, I think it's a good move to sell him).

Well done Mate! A great finish to the season for Atletico.

Heres my team with changes in boldGK: Tim Howard

D: Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit, Steve Cherundolo

M: Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Landon Donovan

F: Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle

- Bocanegra and Cherundolo have played fullback consistently for their teams in France and Germany respectively. Id be surprised if they both arent starting.

- I much prefer Dempsey in a midfielder's role as it strengthens the midfield and gives us more of an unpredictable threat on the perimeter.

- I think Edu and Clark will rotate freely in the midfield but I prefer Edu due to his form this year

- With Dempsey moving to the wing, its anyones guess who plays with Jozy up front. Buddle is the best bet, again based on form.

spector played quite a bit this year as well. we went over this probably ten pages ago or so but don't rennes play an atypical formation? dont think boca has been playing the traditional fullback role. i'd like to see spector out there, he should be very familiar with the english players. i guess it all depends on if gooch is healthy. if he is, i like him and boca in the middle, spector on the left and dolo on the right. agree wholeheartedly with edu over clark. clark finally played this past weekend but he hasn't been on the field too much this season. looking ahead it would be nice to start playing bradley and edu together, they will be the starting center mids for years to come.

Couple of questions..

When does the EPL transfer window open?

Are there any good websites I can bookmark to read about soccer and the goings on in the EPL? I get very little from the normal mainstream sites.

Thanks.

I watch Go Diego Go and Dora all the time
AYUDAMEI read EPL Talk. And as much as I hate ESPN, I think ESPN Soccernet had pretty good coverage of most of the big clubs.

do you just want news or do you want something like this board where fans are talking about the league?

Skysports.net has pretty good transfer coverage on all markets. Rumours, done deals, etc. Just bookmark the football page. It's in non-Spanish.
