Just went on to buy tix for US-Brazil. I just couldnt pull the 300 trigger before talking to my wife. It is a lot of money for crappy 2nd tier seats
I got a pair of lower tickets section 111A row 12 for $230 all tolled. No idea where you're finding crappy 2nd tier seats for that much.
I got section 212 and 241. Never was even offered lower level and those were $135 tix

I just went on and put in a cheaper price ($80) and got section 108.

$183.40

Doesnt make sense to me but Im cool with it. I know 2 sections over has a slightly better view but I like being on the lower concourse

Question for anyone who follows European club teams....

I am going to be in Germany for 2 weeks in July. Does anyone know if any of the club teams will be playing or is everything basically on hold with the world cup?

Are there any teams in the Manheim/Heidelberg region worth checking out?

Probably a tough time to find a good team playing. Pretty much, June & July are the only months players get off.

If it is the very end of July, you might catch a pre-season friendly, but you won't catch a proper Bundesliga match

yeah, and so many teams travel now to Asia, the US etc in the offseason, you would have better luck seeing them play here than you would there.

Based on the map of Germany, the closest Bundesliga team to you looks like Stuttgart, and they're supposed to have a two-legged Europa League qualifier at the end of July. The home leg may be too late for your trip, but it's something to take a look at. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info guys. If I catch a match, I'll report back.

Fun stuff tonight. Unfortunately, I missed last Sunday's game when I was sick, which we lost 2-0. We sit 7th of 12 with 6 points from 5 games (1-3-1).

But tonight, our captain called me and one of our other players (star defender) and asked us to fill in for their co-ed league (11v11, 60 min game), as they had a bunch of players back out for the night's game. They had like 3-4 of our normal players, plus some random rec-level guys and girls I'd never met.

It was just funny playing against a step-down in class. Now I know how teams like Brazil must feel when they play just completely lesser opponents. The other guy and I just dominated. We started on the bench, and actually went down 1-0 before we came in.....we never did tie it up, but we held it at 1-0. The other players on our team were kinda bad, but it was just fun to have acres of space in the midfield for a change. I cannot remember losing possession a single time during the match :lmao:

Kinda sucks to lose, especially after playing so well, but :( I was just a fill-in player anyway.

Was wondering with Ballack getting the axe if he might give it some thought- MLS getting lots of love here...

"I'm not yet ready to 'retire' by going to the United States or Dubai and want to stay in Europe. I'm a proud German who always enjoyed living there, so have some options back home."

yeah. He probably saw how well it worked when Mattheaus "retired" here and was made a fool of by guys making 25k a year because he was so out of shape and could care less.

oh oh, I don't think this bodes well for the US. I expected the 2018 bid to go some where else and for us to get the 2022 almost uncontested.

This is a very smart move by Aussie. Only thing we can hope for is that since Aussie is now in Asia, we might be able to claim Asia hosted in 2002 and North America has not hosted since 1994.

JOHANNESBURG—Australia pulled out of the race to host the 2018 World Cup on Thursday and will instead focus on the 2022 tournament.

The announcement by FIFA and the Football Federation Australia leaves the United States running against four European bids: Belgium-Netherlands, England, Russia and Spain-Portugal -- for the 2018 tournament. The U.S. also is bidding for 2022.

"The FFA ... were among the very first to enter into an open and constructive dialogue with me after it became apparent that there was a growing movement to stage the 2018 World Cup in Europe," FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said. "Their announcement of today ... to focus solely on bidding for the 2022 World Cup, is a welcome gesture that is much appreciated by FIFA's leadership and executive committee."

FFA chairman Frank Lowy said the Australians have been in contact with FIFA for months about withdrawing from 2018.

Europe last hosted the World Cup in Germany in 2006, and following this year's tournament in South Africa, the 2014 competition will be in Brazil.

For the 2022 tournament, Australia will be up against the five bidders for 2018 as well as Japan, Qatar and South Korea.

FIFA's 24-man executive committee will decide the host of both events in December.

Aussies have a significant issue with their Aussie Football League not wanting to cooperate and needing to use those stadiums for a bid. I dont really see any issues with the US keeping its bid in for 2018, its not like a US bid is all that complicated. Nothing needs to be built and there are alternates aplenty if there are any issues.I may not be an objective observer, but I fail to see why 2018 to Europe should be a forgone conclusion. Its been getting atleast every other World Cup for the entirety of the tournament, but with the globalization of the game and ease of travel I fail to see a reason to continue that trend. Especially when you consider that the 1994 World Cup holds the record for attendence even though the tournament has since expanded.

Napoli gaining the UEFA Cup playoff round and Cesena getting promoted to Serie A for the first time in 19 years made this a great football season. Cesena would be my "local team" while Napoli is my favorite soccer club having gone to their games in the late 90s a lot.

Exciting 2-1 win for us tonight.

We went down 1-0 within the first 3 minutes after a miscommunication in the back. We equalized right before the half, and then dominated the second half (and most of the game overall) but kept failing to score. I even got my obligatory 1 shot/game, hammered a left footed (not my strong foot) shot about 15 yards wide first time.

But in the 88th, off a corner, our statuesque 6'4" striker, who can't do jack #### with the ball at his feet, outjumped both the keeper and a defender at the back post to nick in the winner.

It was a frantic last 4 minutes (2 minutes of stoppage time), but we held em off. 2-3-1 for 9 points from 6 games.

All you guys not involved in the WC Fantasy draft please let us know who has the best team.
Ill do it. Granted Im not an expert on the Slovakian defense or the Paraguayan midfield like LHUCKS but Ill take a stab at it.
:goodposting: I realize you're being sarcastic, but one would have to know a heck of a lot about soccer to be able to judge those teams...it's the equivalent of like 5 NFLs...your life would have to be soccer to be even remotely accurate in your predictions.

That being said, there are a few guys in this thread that could probably take a stab at it...I don't watch nearly enough international soccer myself. I watch MLS, EPL follow the US and its players and that's about it.

If you are looking for details analysis of the less known teams, most of us won't be able to even fake it. If you do want this level, either google or go to BigSoccer. They have so many posters, they can cover these niche teams pretty well.

Anyone here ever read Soccernomics (link)? I picked it up at a book store in the airport yesterday . It's suppose to be to soccer what Moneyball was to baseball (basically trying to quantify the sport using tons of data and other rationale).

Finished the first chapter on why England never wins and just wondering if any others had opinions of the book.

Man, I made an ### out of myself this morning in the WC thread. My bad. Just wanted to apologize to all you soccer thread guys.
I got a timeout for calling MOP an idiot in the England thread. Everybody gets testy. I just think we have to realize that our reflexive distaste for criticism isn't always helping. For the most part, I think the board response has been far more favorable to the World Cup than it was four years ago.

No probs Z - I still get wrankled too when people bring up ways to "fix" the game. Sorry folks, the game is just fine without larger goals and a less confusing "blue line" for offsides.I do agree with a lot of folks though on the writhing around on the field trying to draw cards, waste time, etc. I'm not sure how to fix that though. Rude brought up a great point in the WC thread about subsequent review and discipline of blantant cheaters. My only problem with it is that I don't trust FIFA to fairly administer and/or enforce that policy, so I'm afraid we just have to live with it and hope more referees card blatant dive attempts and cheating moves.

I got it a few weeks ago but am only about 5 chapters in - probably will pick up the pace after the WC. Cool read so far though.

There are some people who it applies to, and some who it doesn't. I've been very impressed with a lot of the posters on the board here, there isn't anywhere near as much hate as I was expecting. That said, I've been catching #### all day every day at work. There isn't a single-person in my 45-person office who even remotely cares about the sport, and every person seems to know exactly why the game is broken and why it sucks.

Just passing along a great article a friend forwarded that touches on a number of subjects discussed earlier in this thread and in the world cup thread. The backdrop is the legendary football factory that Ajax has become - going from an international powerhouse to essentially a feeder club over the past 10 years or so. But the real topics of interest I think for us are how young players are developed, how the US differs from the rest of the world and a ton of interesting commentary on euro clubs, money and the scouting and development of young players.
