Race to Host in 2022 Getting Interesting

The United States’ bid to host the 2022 World Cup has come under fresh threat thanks to a surprising surge of support for rival bidder Qatar.

U.S. Soccer had been feeling pretty good about its prospects for the Dec. 2 decision, but has been rocked by the recent revival of a Qatar bid that is still under investigation for alleged collusion but continues to gain backing within the 24-member FIFA Executive Committee nonetheless.

It would totally be :coffee: if the US bid lost out, particularly to Qatar (though you can only imagine what pockets they must be lining to be moving up so quickly). That said, my 2nd choice for 2022 would actually be Qatar as everyone would be miserable - even if the stadiums are climate controlled, the rest of the country isn't. As noted in the article, Qatar has only one major city - Doha - where everything would be located. That FIFA would essentially be denying themselves China in the process for 2026 would make it all the more comically wrong. Of course it's as likely they are just looking for a better deal from the US for '22.-QG

Oh, please. The truth of the matter is he's one of the best. And by being one of the best, he refs a lot of the games we get to see. I bet you couldn't name two other refs without looking them up, yet 10 are out there every week.
What does knowing many refs have to do with knowing is this guy has been shaky of late?

I know three:

Howard Webb

The guy Fergie called fat

That bald guy

:lmao: ;)

I think Webb had a bad world cup final and his last handful of matches I have seen, he's been bad. The AC Milan/Real Madrid game was a joke. I think he's becoming too famous and is more interested in being the player's friend rather than reffing.

Real barn burner going on at the Eastlands
Just got finished watching...Mancini is a sackless cowherd. How about they try and win a ####### home game for once. They better get someone that refuses to play defense in the window or City wont make the CL...AGAIN.What a poor showing by the City players...the fans did their part.
what could Mancini have done differently? Start AJ? More of an attacking threat down the wing, but he barely puts a shift in on defense. Milner did a great job of helping keep Evra quiet. Could he have taken out a midfielder to put on Ade? City would have never had a chance in midfield, they came out worse there as it is. After the first 15 minutes I thought city were going to boss the midfield but united eventually wore them down.City has lost the last three to United getting a point is an accomplishment, even if it is at home. Losing that game would have been bad from a pr perspective. Did Mancini setup negatively, absolutely. Would I like to see more attacking football, yes. I thought Yaya would have proven to be the link they needed but he's just not looking fully fit. when he gets himself on one of those runs he's struggling to find a pass. I think part of it is him not seeing the field quick enough and part of it's other players not getting into space to make the pass easier on him. Of the top 9 teams in the table City have only yet to play Bolton. So 6 of their remaining 7 in the first half are bottom half teams, yet City still sit in 4th, 4 points clear of 5th. If Balotelli can last 90 minutes without going postal for a string of games, I think City's attacking threat will find it's groove. Mancini clearly doesn't trust Ade, RSC, or Jo so for now it's Tevez and Silva as attacking threats with AJ used sparingly until he puts a shift in on defense regularly.

Ya, I was fired up that they played so defensively...I just wanna see Adam Johnson in there more. The guy is dynamic and that is what they lack.I am tired of Gareth Barry. He sucks. You are much more level headed than I am.

Roster

Goalkeepers: Dominic Cervi (Glasgow Celtic, Scotland), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England)

Defenders: Gale Agbossoumonde (Estoril Praia, Portugal), Nat Borchers (Salt Lake), Jonathan Bornstein (Tigres, Mexico), Clarence Goodson (Brondby, Denmark), Eric Lichaj (Aston Villa, England), Tim Ream (New York), Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England)

Midfielders: Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro, Sweden), Brian Carroll (Columbus), Mikkel Diskerud (Stabaek, Norway), Eddie Gaven (Columbus), Logan Pause (Chicago), Robbie Rogers (Columbus)

Forwards: Juan Agudelo (New York), Teal Bunbury (Kansas City), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake)

Anyone wanna give me a scouting report on the bolded? Also, absolutely fantastic to be getting Bunburry and Diskerud capped for the US.
We have talked about Tim Ream a lot in this thread if you go back a ways.He is lanky ball playing central defender. We likened him earlier to a young Carlos Bocanegra (and not just because they are both lefties). Ream was drafted in the second round this year but ended up starting all 30 matches for the Red Bulls. Both his coach and Henry were extremely impressed with his skills.
I got to see Ream when he came into Philly for the final home game of the season. He doesn't look super impressive physically when you see him in person as opposed to someone like Omar Gonzalez, but he plays the game very intelligently, pretty consistently makes the correct decisions with his passing and clearing out from the back, he's good in the air and he plays very calm at the back. I think he becomes a mainstay for the Nats.
this is a fair evaluation.Interesting that you mentioned Gonzalez, as he is almost the opposite of Ream. Strong in the air and on tackles and a physical specimen. I could easily see Gonzo and Ream playing together much they way Gooch and Boca did (similar sizes, skills, strengths etc).
Agreed - Gonzalez is just a monster who just physically stifles attacks up the middle - I think they would pair up nicely.
Good stuff on Ream- amazingly controlled and calm in the back, always trying to make a smart play with the ball, very smart tactically on defense (as said- not a giant, but he's big enough)- he's said that he's learngin a ton from Marquez, which is great/ironically-cruel if he can put that to use against Mexico.Agudelo is a kid I never really got watch, but I remembered when he got called up- think I posted it in here. Must be somebody legitimate to be getting PT on that squad at 17.

Carrol is the consummate journey-man- consistently above average, but not enough quality to rate for the USMNT consistently, IMO. This is kinda like giving him a nice watch at retirement... thanks, you know, for the effort.

Anyone been to a NASL game? San Antonio got a team that will start in 2012 and was wondering what the atmospehre is like at one of the games. I am hoping to take my kids to the games (they will be 4 at the time)

Can anyone explain what the BFD is with Blackpool and who they started against Aston? Was the team they put out there that bad? It was a close match from what I saw.

I'd love to see Balotelli emerge as a superstar....he has a ton of raw talent.

I don't know much about Tim Ream other than what has been posted here, but my first real extended time of watching him play involved Bobby Convey making him look like a schoolyard defender en route to a goal. He got manhandled.I hope that was a lapse in judgement rather than a common thing.

First (and only) goal in this video if you're not sure what I'm talking about.

Stoke controlling the first fifteen minutes here. They've had a few good chances already one of witch bring out a good save from Pepe

Does anyone score as many clutch goals as Kiko Macheda? Seems like every time he gets into the game, he scores a crucial late goal.

ETA: his clutch goals per minute ratio is through the roof

Definitely should have taken Christo up on the Liverpool vs. Newcastle bet. :P
Liverpool places 4th, book it
:coffee:They'll be in 5th sitting on 21pts after the weekend. Tottenham can't handle CL and EPL...and with a little luck Man City will come apart at the seems like they've show signs of already....
You did mean this weekend, right? :coffee:
:lmao:If they play the next few games like they did today they wont see 21pts for a while. Just an awful game. Credit goes to Stoke, they pressed Liverpool the entire first half and took them out of any sort of rhythm. The crisp passing that had been there in their little streak turned into lobbed balls and off target everything. Perfect example was Gerrard's bad pass that led to Jones' goal. The entire second half was littered with that crap.

Stu Holden got his first EPL goal today. He's also become a regular and seems one of the better players on a side that is currently sitting on 5th and play like they deserve to be there. We'll see if Coyle can keep them there though bc I don't know if they have the depth. Regardless, really good situation for Holden right now.

:goodposting: Good to see Holden persevere through a number of setbacks

I went to a few Tulsa Roughneck games :boxing:
78,000 thousand drunken college students chanting Coosss-Mooooos (with a sound of that like they are looking for a lost dog), a dog catching frisbees thrown 80 yards down the field at half-time. *sigh*. Yes I've been to a couple NASL games. :boxing: -QG

They are $100M in the hole right now and have publicly admitted they may have to transfer out Cahill and/or Elmander in January if someone makes them a good offer. I think that's unfortunate as I imagine their current run is phenomenal given their budget, but apparently it's still too much. They may be able to replace both of those players, but it's going to kill their already marginal depth.

Zakuni chooses Congo over US due to time to get citizenship

Won't be the last player the US loses out on due to this issue.
well that sucks.Wont even see a world cup now. The Congo hasn't qualified since 1974. Hell, they haven't even made the last 2 African Cup of Nations.

Can't totally blame him though. You know almost any other country would have fast tracked his citizenship.
A Congo team has won the African Champion's League 2 years in a row though... They could be improving.

it's the wrong US political climate to see soccer players get fast tracked to citizenship

Short-sighted by him, given that we have generally the easiest path to qualification this side of New Zealand. He will regret this down the line.

*sigh*

KC Wizards will rebrand on Wednesday

Rumor is that they will change name, symbol, colors, everything as they enter the new stadium next season. Rumored name is Sporting KC
Yikes. That's worse than Wizards. But admittedly not as bad as Wiz.
And not quite as ridiculous as Real Salt Lake.Does that branding technique really work? I feel like these knock-off names just serve to further diminish the league's image, frankly. I'm not a fan of the Columbus Crew name (or the comicial Run-DMC logo) but it at least has the advantage of being unique to the states. I like the fact that Seattle soundly, if you will, rejected this gimmick.

If the whole league was just Los Angeles FC and Seattle FC and whatever FC it would be OK I think. Boring, but OK.Since it's not, everyone needs to go to the American style of naming teams. This isn't Europe or South America as some people badly want it to be. We have a format already in this country.
