I think I will root for Real Madrid because I like Ronaldo. Havent decided yet.
good man, even for a city fan. I pretty much root against Barca at any opportunity though. This game is pretty huge - pretty much because no one else is going to contend for the title. 1 points separate these two, if Real can step up with an away win, good night Irene.Higuain failed his fitness test....Benzema has played a bit better this year than lastEither way, this should be a cracker, not the #### fest we witnessed in the Eastlands a few weeks back.

Gettin pretty excited about the game today.Benzema to get the start over Higuaín BTW. Looks like "el pipa" is a bit nicked up.
Benzema is a significant downgrade over Higuain IMO.
Definitely. Di Maria, CRonaldo, and Sir Higuain have been exceptional lately. Losing the point of that attacking trident is a blow to their chances. Benzema is on the verge of being sold off for parts.
A lot of commentators have mentioned Higuain struggling this season. While I think that's been a bit overblown, he isn't in the same form as last season and Benzema looked good in CL play last week. I think Higuain is one of the more replaceable players on the team. Ronaldo, Ozil, DiMaria, Xabi Alonso, Carvalho, Casillas, and arguably Marcelo are more essential this year, IMO.
I disagree. I think Higuaín is just as important as Özil right now. The others have replacements not on the level of Benzema, and that's why they are more important for the squad. That said, I see Carvalho, Xabi, and Di Maria are the keys this year (whereas Xabi wasn't that central piece last year). CRonaldo is CRonaldo and Iker is Iker. You know what you're getting out of those guys.

MLS just donated 2 million to the USA bid committee.

I am a little nervous as to why the bid committee needs such an infusion of money this late in the process (bribing jokes are welcomed :) )

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writ.../29/us.2022bid/

Landon Donovan mentioned on his twitter that he was flying out to Switzerland for the final push.
The part that confused me about the article was discounting the bids of Australia, Japan and Korea due to FIFA potentially wanting China for 2026, but not discounting Qatar's bid for the same reason. I would think the same logic applies since they're all in the Asian confederation. If 2022 doesn't end up going to the US (hoping happens for obvious reasons) or Australia (which objectively makes a lot of sense China notwithstanding) it will be a total joke.

Wait, just so I have this straight....there are people that like Ronaldo that don't already root for his club/country?
I don't really root for Portugal, but I root for Ronaldo and think his critics give him a bum rap (I think he dives less than players who are fouled a lot less). And I'm kind of agnostic about Barca vs. Real Madrid. I think Real is playing closer to my own Platonic ideal of the way the game should be played this year, so I'm rooting for them in this match, but I think it's kind of hard to be a fan of the game and not be a big fan of a lot of the players on each team. I've been advocating for Xavi for the Ballon d'Or for a couple of years now. I get a little squicked out by the pro-facism connection to Madrid, but I love Mourinho's scarves. It's kind of like Sophie's Choice for me.

:) I wish both teams were disbanded though as well.

I know that has to be tongue in cheek, but I'll respond anyway...You can't tell me if you were trying to convert someone into a soccer fan and had to show them one club game that Barca wouldn't be one of your top choices to make them watch. No one plays quite like they do, and when they are firing on all cylinders it is a beautiful thing.

The Special One has stated that he has a commercial relationship with Armani. I believe the designer dictates which knot he is to use in the scarf depending on a variety of factors, including location and television coverage.

I love dynasties. I love super teams. And I think it probably grows the game. And I say that as a guy who still considers himself a Newcastle fan.

Terrible tangent, but am I the only one who enjoys Special1 TV and it's predeccessors? The one where Mourinho asks Wenger how it feels to have Arshavin still makes me laugh."Are you saying that things move more smoothly with Arshavin?"

The dude is a great player. He acts like a little #####, but the guy can play football.
Definitely not disputing any of this. But #### Ronaldo. There are many great players and I like some and hate others. I like to watch Ronaldo but hate Ronaldo. Know what I mean? And I guess I took derek's comment as he likes and roots for Ronaldo. Seriously #### that guy. I want Real to win today but I hope he trips over the ball trying his fancy crap and Puyol makes him eat dirt.

Yes, my comment was tongue in cheek. It's great to have evil empires to cheer against while your underdog team toils away at ending their dominion.

Eff it, I'm out. I was going to stick around here at work until 11:50 or so to make it appear that I'm not slacking, but screw it.

THIS IS EL CLASICO!!

The dive he took earlier this month against Milan (Abate) was disgraceful, even for him. It was pretty much a Rivaldo.edit: found it --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab36yDjiyPs...player_embedded

awesome player though, no doubt. More scary as an opponent than Messi imo.

I'm pretty stunned the way Barça is taking Real apart. I never would have guessed it. I certainly figure they were a slight favorite at home but good lord this is utter destruction.

Love the crowd shots with the fans giving Ronaldo the finger. Man it would be fun to be at Camp Nou right now.

Barcelona with everybody healthy is just an incredible team.

While two real teams are going at it, this is just your friendly reminder that Liverpool is a horse#### team this year and almost deserve relegation.

That is all. You may continue watching good soccer now.

At least Real lost with the utmost class, grace and sportsmanship
Not surprising, given their manager. Suck it Mourinho. And Sergio Ramos can go rot in hell. Fantastic win by the Blaugrana - just ticked I couldn't actually watch it. Nice scheduling decision there - put the club match that pretty much most of the world wants to see at a time when most of the world won't be able to see it. I'll enjoy the replay tonight.

Ramos took a cheap shot and Pep had a little ball tossing episode. It was a fun game to watch, but the ticky-tack douchebaggery isn't unique to any team.Barca weren't good winners and Real weren't good losers. I can't imagine that's a shock to anyone.

hard to believe that all that stuff was going on between countrymen. Ramos shoves Pujol in the face and then slaps Xavi's arm away. Just unreal.

I absolutely love that announcer. I almost wet my pants when he called the passing "orgasmic".

First La Liga game I've seen this year ( :hey: ) but man was Barca's performance something else. Still marveling at some of those passes and finishes. Not to mention all the drama/fights. After attending the Texans game yesterday and seeing AJ80 beat down that red headed step child, I definitely welcomed all the intensity. I used to like Sergio Ramos but he was acting like a little girl out there.

I took off work early and joined some friends/Barca supporters at the bar. After a few drinks the announcer's comments were even more :lmao: Makes me wonder if those lads drink like Howard and co. used to. I love that one after a RM takeout - "that was nastier than a rat bite". That's pretty nasty :hey:

The showdown between two players who can lay claim to the Best Striker in the World went decisively to Messi. He didn't score, but set up two scores like a magician.

I didn't know Drogba was playing for Real Madrid these days.
Lots can lay claim. I didn't say they were the only ones.
Are they even strikers?

No one scores more goals on their team. Messi has 22 in his last 18 games for Barca. Ronaldo has 16 in his last 19 games for Real.

 What a beatdown. So much for this talk about Real being the best. Give Xavi the Ballon D'Or already. Pep is 5-0 vs Madrid and his teams have outscored them 16-2.

I'm sure their opponents think so.

Modern soccer is so fluid that although neither of them occupy the position of forward striker, (Messi wear a 10 and Ronaldo a 9--or possibly 7 now), they are constantly involved in attacking the opponents goal; hence the high scoring opportunities. They are superb goal scorers; Ronaldo through his devastating kicking, and Messi through his magical dribbling and change of pace. Both of them are extremely fast with the ball.

Two things about Messi that I absolutely love, and that he gets little credit for... (1) when he has the ball at his feet, he doesn't lose ANY speed/quickness, and (2) he is unbelievable when it comes to using his body when he has the ball.

I still haven't picked out my own Spanish team to follow, but does ESPN3 show a lot of Spanish soccer? Now that I (finally) get ESPN3, I'd love to watch some more....I wish they'd show it on TV more here as is...
