The Asian Cup final is set.Japan won a cracker of a game over South Korea to advance. SK tied the game at 2-2 in injury time and then proceeded to miss every PK they took to lose to Japan. The Aussies blew out Uzbekistan 6-0 in the other semi.Japan vs Australia for the finals. For those that don't know this is being played in Qatar. Game is Jan 29th.
Last I heard, there wasn't much interest there, considering. Unfilled stadiums, etc. Has this picked up in the later rounds?FIFA keeps making different sounds about the winter WC (yes/no/smoo)- have any of you heard anything more definitive?

and fwiw- not only are we non-HD, we're also still on a CRT TV.
seriously how do you live? I have had an HD set in my house since late 1998. I almost died having to watch the non HD feed of Telefutura :(
To be honest- when I watch HD, I don't really notice that big a difference (including watching on my GB's 60" monster). As long as I can see the action on the field, I'm happy.

So nobody else was bothered by the too-wide field of view of the main camera in the US v Chile game?
Just me?
I was watching a non HD Telefutura feed so it all looked bad to me :(
But specifically that the camera viewpoint was pulled back further than your normal, EPL type of feed. I watched an early EPL game the morning after the US game and it was like... ahhhhhh. I can see the players in aroudn the play without having to see the entire field and stands.
hard to say. It seemed similar to other games at HDC but I will pay more attention the next time the Gals are on TV to see for a difference.
I don't think so. This was extreme enough for me to really notice and be bothered... and I've seen plenty of games at HDC before, without noticing this.

Ives continues to pump interesting pieces. For those that don't follow him, check him out at http://www.soccerbyives.net/

Here was an interesting piece of him projecting what the US Gold Cup roster might look like as of today.

PROJECTED 2011 Gold Cup Roster

GOALKEEPERS- Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Sean Johnson

DEFENDERS- Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo, Oguchi Onyewu, Clarence Goodson, Jonathan Spector, Eric Lichaj, Tim Ream, Jonathan Bornstein

MIDFIELDERS- Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu, Ricardo Clark, Alejandro Bedoya

FORWARDS- Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Juan Agudelo, Teal Bunbury

-------

Here are some thoughts on the picks:

GOALKEEPER- Sean Johnson could make way for a veteran, but it's not likely the third goalkeeper will be needed. That said, Johnson impressed enough to get 45 minutes on Saturday. Bradley could easily go with Nick Rimando instead, or perhaps bring in Marcus Hahnemann.

DEFENDERS- Jay DeMerit, Omar Gonzalez, Heath Pearce, Zach Loyd and Sean Franklin are all in the conversation, but they'll have to work hard over the next five months to break into the squad. DeMerit hasn't played since the World Cup and isn't getting any younger, while Gonzalez still needs to work on his passing. Heath Pearce could definitely break into the mix, as could Loyd, if Bornstein's run in Mexico is an unsuccessful one. So why Bornstein again? He's been called on before, and if he's playing regularly for Tigres, even if it isn't at left back, Bradley will likely turn to him. Now, if he isn't playing, and someone like Pearce or Loyd can find a nice run of form, Bornstein could be pushed aside.

MIDFIELDERS- Very tough decisions for Bradley. Sacha Kljestan, Benny Feilhaber, Jose Torres and Mixx Diskerud are all on the outside looking in. Bradley could leave behind a forward and bring another midfielder, but with five central midfielders already on the roster he would more likely add a winger. Feilhaber can play on the wing, as can Kljestan. Right now Clark is in, especially if he keeps playing regularly for Eintracht Frankfurt, but I could definitely see Kljestan getting the call because of his attacking qualities.

FORWARDS- Right now it doesn't seem like the race here is all that tough. Altidore and Agudelo should be locks, while Buddle will have to be considered if he can keep scoring goals. Bunbury is not a lock, but we'll include him here. If Bradley brings an extra midfielder, Bunbury would likely be left off. It will be VERY interesting to see what happens if Danny Mwanga secures his citizenship. If he does, he'll have to be considered a good candidate for this group. There are others on the radar, like Chris Wondolowski and Herculez Gomez, but they'll need strong showings over the next five months to make up ground.

changes every day it seems. Last rumor was that Blatter is now expecting it to be plaedy at the very end of 2022. Most however are simply going to wait until after 2018 and then they will make a decision. By that time their will be likely a whole new board of people to be bribed.Ironically if they go to a winter World Cup, MLS is going to be one of the few leagues that line up correctly.

I only have some numbers but they don't look good. The 3 first round games involving Qatar averaged ~30kMost of the other first round games drew horrendously low numbers including ~10 games that drew under 10k with 5 games I believe drawing at or under 5k. No first round game not involving Qatar drew more than 17.5kThe quarter final between Qatar and Japan only drew 19k (not sure why this was so much lower than Qatar's first round games. Might have been due to lack of time for presale). Two of the other 3 quarter finals drew under 8k.The Japan SK semi drew 16k.

People closer to the club than I am expect that this deal is so significant that it should open the doors for a couple of DP level players.

I don't know how MLS keeps pulling these things off but good for them. Every deal like this helps to band-aid up the wound of losing the 2022 WC.

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, January 25, 2011) – In a landmark agreement between Club Deportivo Chivas USA of Major League Soccer and Grupo Modelo, the leading beer company in Mexico and one of the top brewers in the world, Corona Extra has become the presenting sponsor of Chivas USA. The multiyear agreement will see the logo of Corona Extra, the leading brand in Mexico and the top imported beer in the United States, on Chivas USA team gear, as well as having a significant and visible presence at Chivas USA’s home games and other events.

Corona Extra has been the number one imported premium beer in the US for more than a decade and is the top imported beer in 50 of the 170 countries in which it is currently present. Grupo Modelo is known for its sports sponsorships not only in Mexico but all over the world, and made for a natural fit between the Mexican-owned Chivas USA and Corona Extra, a premium beer known the world over as a symbol of Mexico, quality and great sports.

Full details of the agreement will be unveiled at a February 16 event in downtown Los Angeles. More information on the celebration will be made available in the coming days.

No discussion on Real Madrid getting Adebayor on loan for the rest of the season? Adebayor will be paid 2m€ for the year and Real has the option of buying him outright at any time for 14m€. He'll be off of Man City's books for the remainder of the season.

Also, my Atleti fended off a 45m€ bid for el Kun (from Real Madrid) and a 60m€ bid for Kun and Godín from Chelski. Nice to see them not selling out the season. Might be a bad decision, but it will keep them competitive at least.

Mark van Bommel to join AC Milan

Mark van Bommel (33) is leaving Bayern to join Italian league leaders AC Milan with immediate effect. The Dutch international requested FC Bayern Munich to release him from his contract, which was due to expire on 30 June 2011, in order to leave the club for professional reasons. After meeting to discuss the matter this morning, FC Bayern Munich AG board members Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Karl Hopfner, and director of sport Christian Nerlinger, agreed to the player’s request.

“Mark formally requested to be released from his contract before its expiry date for professional and career reasons, allowing him to join AC Milan straight away. Mark has always been a model professional, an important and successful player for FC Bayern, and an outstanding club captain too. On the basis of his service to the club, we have granted Mark’s request,” commented club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “FC Bayern Munich wishes Mark van Bommel and his family all the best for the future in Italy.”

Mark van Bommel commented: “I leave FC Bayern with a heavy heart, but with my head held high. I’ve had four and a half wonderful and successful years here, and I’d expressly like to thank the club and the fans for that. FC Bayern will always occupy a big place in my heart.“
van Bommel played in 185 games at Bayern, scored 16 goals and was Bayern's first non German captain. Since he already played for Bayern in the Champions League he cannot play for Milan in the competition.

Hey - So I have inherited a group of 6 and 7 year olds to coach for indoor soccer. For most of them this is their first time playing soccer. I am scrambling to come up with some good practic plans to use. Anyone here have any experience in the U6/U7 age group. I know the basics - keep it fun, lots of games etc. Need some examples though. I am used to 16 and 17 year olds. It has been a long time since i have had this age group.

Thanks.

one thing my dad always taught me at a young age was Stay on your feet. It was a good lesson and applied to pretty much every sport.

FSC showed the United v Blackpool game just now... scary moments for Rafael there at the end after a collision to the head with Harewood. Nice to see Sir Alex yucking it up on the sideline with the assistant ref while his young player was lying almost motionless for 5 or so minutes instead of going over to see how he was doing.

Total aside- anybody else love that Owen Coyle wears game shorts on game day?

Funny you mention that. I watched one of my nephew's games a few months ago (the Venezuelan family living in Connecticut) and I was struck my the number of times that the opposition could have been dispossessed with a well timed/executed slide tackle.None of the kids ever went to ground in the game. The kids were 10 or 11 years old.

I also remember the first time I played against a team that knew how to slide tackle. I think I was 12 or so. It really messed us up, as no one knew how to ride a tackle or even avoid a poor tackle. It took about a half season to get used to playing that way, but I can't conceive of playing defense without that technique.

nice comeback for the win, esp on the road where they have struggled to at least pull a draw.Going to be tough since they still have Chelsea twice and Arsenal. Plus the FA cup and CL to continue in.Hernandez has been an awesome addition and Berbatov has surprised, but they need something from Rooney if they are going to keep the top spot. Rafael will need to come back too. Not sure the inj extent, but he is becoming a stud at right back as he matures. Otherwise its a hole in the def with Brown, Neville and whoever else they run out there.

0-0 halfway through the Liverpool/Fulham game

Liverpool had two great chances, but one was thwarted by a great save by the keeper and the other by a bad call on the linesman for offsides.

WHERE IS MASSEY WHEN YOU NEED HER

The photographers must've been having a heart attack while she was doing that :goodposting: -QG
I thought it was a camera trick first but after watching it a few times I think it is real. Doing that in heels is just sick.
The loud "crash" was pretty convincing too. I think it's real. I just would hate to be the photog with thousands of dollars in equipment ready to get smashed by SoccerModel :hey: -QG

Wow, Milan really needs to start putting a few of these great chances away.

...and there it is. Let's see if this gets ugly...

I believed they filled that spot with O'Shea when Rafael got the red card.He ended up with a concussion. Hard to say how long that keeps him out as I'm not real familiar with how the EPL deals with head injuries.

:) They already haven't gotten much from Rooney, and they still have the top spot. I know you're being a cautious homer-guy (I do that too), but I think we all know/assume that once Rooney starts scoring, it's game/set/match (and it seems they're pretty much there even without his goals... Berba... wow).

After belittling the undefeated run earlier, I definitely have to give them a ton of credit for grinding out these wins and points while the rest of the contenders stumble. United and Sir Alex just find a way to get the right players to do what they need to do to get results. Sometimes it's not pretty but more often than not, it is.

They also subbed in Anderson for him after his injury this week. But that was for a more attacking need down at the time.probably oshea and/or smalling who is filling in for Rio right now. Still leaves a hole. Rafael will miss the FA tie this weekend, not sure after that.

:) I'm pretty interested in this as well- seemed like they took every precaution with him for what would've probably been considered in years past as a 'get up and rub some dirt on it' type of injury.

Basically, thats what i was saying. They need Rooney to ensure the title. But my point was more a comment that Berbatov can disappear at times and Hernandez is doing well but its a long season. They are scrapping by on the road draws but will need to turn those into wins to maintain the top spot. Every team can hit a tough spot. And Rooney will be needed. Two season ago it took 2 stunning goals from Macheda to save the season, Rooney may have to play that part.

Not surprising. Benzema is their only striker right now and he has looked pretty awful.

Good move. I guess van Nistelrooy's current club wouldnt let him go so they went with Adebayor. Not sure why City let him go though. Any insights?

Pretty sure he's been at odds with Mancini all season over lack of playing time and they just added Dzeko. They have 137 players so somebody had to go and he seemed like a pretty obvious move. I guess it "only" leaves them with Tevez, Balotelli, Dzeko, and Jo that can play centrally up top now that Adebayor, Santa Cruz, and Caicedo are all out on loan.

 136 now.

Bayern advances to the semis of the DFB Pokal with a 4-0 win at Aachen today. Two goals by Müller, one each by Gomez and Robben.

No EPL predictions? I'll throw my top 7 out there....1. Manchester United2. Arsenal3. Manchester City4. Chelsea5. Tottenham6. Liverpool7. Everton
Damn, Moyes really needs to get Everton moving here or I'm liable to miss the septacta.

Inter to bid £40m for Gareth Bale

This number has been tossed around for some time, but I didn't realize how rare it was for this kind of payout.

There are clearly better players, but I think it speaks as to how difficult it is to find natural left midfielders/wingbacks with that kind of pace and potential. He's gotten exceptionally better just over the course of this season and he's still only 21.

Why not?Gareth Bales don't come along often. At 21, I really don't see the rush to sell him unless he wants to move. He's going to be amazingly marketable over the next few years if he keeps playing like this and it's going to net the club a lot of money. And the kid is still improving. If they miss CL, I can see a case can be made, but this is the unique talent that can break Spurs out of the middle of the pack to an upper echelon team. This kid can literally change the club's destiny and no amount of transfer money can be worth more. This is Alan Shearer at Blackburn. Don't do it 'Arry.

Or he breaks his leg and he's worth nothing. He's my favorite player on my favorite team, so I certainly want him to stay.

That's really what it's going to come down to IMO. There's just so much money riding on that CL spot.

I thought the same thing, but if Tottenham ever really want to have a shot again they have to stop being a farm team for the big clubs. At this point they have the talent to be in the top five for several more years. Even if they don't get a spot this year they are certainly going to be in the running again next year.Selling Bale would be so disappointing.

Even if they don't get a spot this year they are certainly going to be in the running again next year.Selling Bale would be so disappointing.
I thought you were going to follow "to" with "win more games"I agree with Pre about Spurs needing to keep Bale (even though I'd love to see him go to my geriatric Inter).
