Saputo Stadium to get 7,000 new seats ahead of Impact joining MLS

MONTREAL – The Impact on Wednesday announced a major expansion for Saputo Stadium as the team prepares to enter Major League Soccer in 2012.
Seating capacity at the stadium will be increased from 13,034 to 20,341 seats. More than 7,000 seats will be added to the current stadium, divided as follows: 3,500 seats in a new West grandstand, 1,250 additional seats in the Southeast and Southwest grandstands (corners), as well as 1,000 additional seats in the East grandstand.
Among the most notable changes, a roof will hang over the upper rows of each grandstand, for a total of 6,948 covered seats. The roof will therefore cover a third of all seats, making the new Saputo Stadium a covered, open-air stadium.
“Today, we are presenting you a major league stadium for a major league city,” Joey Saputo, president of the Montreal Impact and the Saputo Stadium, said in a statement. “This is a major step forward for soccer in Montreal and Quebec. This stadium will remain the main rallying point for soccer in the province. In 2012, all our season ticket holders will be able to find their place at Saputo Stadium in 2012. I would like to thank my family and the Quebec government for their involvement and continued support in this project.”
The Impact also revealed a basic pricing structure for season tickets in 2012. A season membership will range from $250 to $1250, compared to the actual prices from $160 to $1400. More detailed pricing will be available in the coming months.
“The Saputo Stadium was already beautiful, but now it will be magnificent,” declared Richard Legendre, executive vice president of the Montreal Impact and Saputo Stadium. “The new roof will add to the ambiance, while the stadium’s newfound symmetry will make it even more charming. In the new stadium, every single fan will still have an excellent view of the action on the field.”
There will also be a total of three entrances to the stadium. The two existing access points will be reworked and a third access point will be created along Viau Boulevard. The stadium will also see an increase in concession points of sale, increasing from 27 to 100 locations. The two existing boutiques will remain in place, while the West plaza will be reorganized.
In order to accommodate the business community, the revamped stadium will also include more corporate boxes, jumping from 16 to 40.
Work will begin in mid-May of this year, but the bulk of the work will be done in the fall of 2011, which is when the new structure will be erected. The stadium will be completed by March 2012, in time for the club’s first season in Major League Soccer.

Song may be that game changer for Arsenal in EPL and domestic cup play, but I think he's too physical and picks up too many fouls/yellows in CL play. The reffing is different, and he hasn't shown the ability to change his mentality from the play of the EPL midfield.Champion's League is a different game than the domestic competitions, be it England, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc. Some players excel at CL games, and some don't.

I'm still shocked JP can get a job. Martino has been showing some decent show-biz chops when I see him- I think he's the type of guy who could handle both color and analysis... especially if it means JP shuts up.

JP is also the lead guy for the union this year pairing with Twellman.Martino is the best young color guy around. The only reason Harkes still has the bigger profile is due to his name. Over time hopefully Martino will make the leap to ESPN.

Edu is starting as normal for Rangers in the game at PSV this afternoon.

Rangers and PSV drew 0-0 in the first leg today.
In a typical first leg Euro play, the home side PSV carried the possesion and pressure. Rangers only looked dangerous for about 5 minutes in the second haf and just decided to defend the rest of the time.
Very boring game over all as PSV created little with their possession.
Edu was plenty involved as you would expect a defensive midfielder to be in a game like this. He played over all well.
Rangers is likely happy with the 0-0. Next Friday is the second leg.

Those Europa League games have a lot at stake as far as UEFA coefficients. Portugal, Russia and Ukraine are in a close battle for the 6th spot in the rankings, which gives 3 Champions League places including 2 straight to group stage.

Another interesting side note for the LA-Sea league opener on Tuesday. It will mark the first game of Kasey Keller's final year after more than 2 decades as a pro.
Here are his clubs through the years. Interesting that he started out as a semi pro with Portland but he will get to face that same side before his is done this year.

One name to keep track of is Timothy Chandler. He is a couple of weeks shy of his 21st birthday and had been getting regular playing time for FC Nuremberg in the Bundesliga.
He was born in Germany but his dad was in the US military. He is eligible for both Germany and the US but has expressed his interest in playing for the US.
I have not seen him play but those that have said he has good size and athletic ability with some soccer skills. One person said he was an interesting blend of Spector and Marvel Wynne. He can play RM, RB or DM.
Anyone had a chance to see him play?

I think they're going back to the hex - they'll say it's because of lack of int'l dates or some BS, but in reality, Jack Warner and CONCACAF was counting on getting 4 full slots for 2014. That way he could have generated more money for the countries in his strong Carribean voting bloc through increased qualifying matches for them while also not seriously threatening the bigger fish in the confederation (namely, Mexico and the US) from not qualifying (i.e. with four full slots, just finish in the top 2 of the group and they're good to go).We know what happened next: he failed in getting the extra half slot. CONCACAF (and by extension FIFA) really cannot afford the US and Mexico (with their abundant TV rights fees and disposable income) to not make the World Cup. Economically (though not necessarily competitively), they're as important as any country for the World Cup.

Holden went all 90 again as Bolton won 3-2 in the FA Cup Quarter Finals.
My memory is not as good as it once was but I think the only American to ever have played in the FA Cup Final was John Harkes back in 1993 with Wednesday. I am positive Harkes was the first, but not sure if any US player has played in it since then. Only one I can think of was maybe Tim Howard for Man U.

Tim Howard won the Cup with Manchester United and played in another Final with Everton I think two years ago.

Davies had a very nice goal. I was sitting about even from where he took it and he just completely owned the keeper.DC and Toronto finished 2-2 tonight and Charleston and Chicago ended 0-0. The refereeing in the Charleston game was awful. The match ended as a 9v10 due to Charleston getting two reds and Chicago one (and one on someone on their bench!)Six matches in three nights and seven red cards, five of them straight reds.
