Messi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> rest of the world throughout history (give or take a player or ten)Definitely a miscue by Bendtner. Just compare how he handled that chance with the way Messi handled his first goal. Huge talent gap.'El Floppo said:Suprised at the couple of comments praising Mascherano's tackle on Bendtner at the end there... Mascherano got wrong-sided allowing Bendtner into space, and didn't really do anything other than be in the right place for Bendtner's wrong touch. If anything, it was Bendtner tackling Mascherano trying to win the ball back.
Song may be that game changer for Arsenal in EPL and domestic cup play, but I think he's too physical and picks up too many fouls/yellows in CL play. The reffing is different, and he hasn't shown the ability to change his mentality from the play of the EPL midfield.Champion's League is a different game than the domestic competitions, be it England, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc. Some players excel at CL games, and some don't....Alex Song has been a game changer for Arsenal this season and is the grit in the middle of the park that they need. Unfortunately, he was unavailable yesterday. Should they get tougher at the back, absolutely, but keep in mind that their most physical center half, Thomas Vermaelen, has been out almost the entire season. I honestly think that Alex Song alone would have made a huge difference in the match yesterday. And no, I'm not saying that they win in any case, but rather that they would have won more of the 50/50 balls and ultimately had more time on the ball.Lastly, maybe they won't ever be better than they are right now, but a consistent run of top 4 in the EPL and knockout stages of the Champions league is pretty good. There are no signs that they are headed in the opposite direction, so I remain hopeful that one season, not far from now, everything clicks.

I have been watching a bunch of his games this year through Direct TV. He is one of the best players on Rangers right now. He is extremely consistent and steady.despite my catholic heritage, I think I'm fast becoming a Rangers fan, mostly due to Edu (who I've been pimping for years in this thread).
I'm still shocked JP can get a job. Martino has been showing some decent show-biz chops when I see him- I think he's the type of guy who could handle both color and analysis... especially if it means JP shuts up.The English language MLS announcer teams appear to be set now.On ESPN, Adrian Healy and John Harkes will be calling the gamesOn FSC, JP Dellacamera and Kyle Martino will be calling the games.
JP is also the lead guy for the union this year pairing with Twellman.Martino is the best young color guy around. The only reason Harkes still has the bigger profile is due to his name. Over time hopefully Martino will make the leap to ESPN.I'm still shocked JP can get a job. I saw the first half of the Kiev vs City game and Kiev played great. The Russian league has improved so much.Pool and City both lose in Europa League today. Is it just me? I find this hilariously funny.............you know, since people actually get shot in Chelsea's locker room.Fernando Torres says he is enjoying a more friendly dressing room atmosphere since swapping Liverpool for Chelsea in a £50 million move on transfer deadline day.
Though Torres is yet to score for his new club, with Carlo Ancelotti still attempting to find the right blend in an attack that also boasts Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba, the Spain striker appears content he made the correct decision.
Rafa Benitez was notoriously aloof from his Liverpool squad during his time at the club, and Torres says Ancelotti has created a more congenial working environment.
"Chelsea have proved they have top-level players in all departments and that they will always be competitive whatever happens, with an owner who will invest when it is necessary," Torres told Marca.
"There are more personal relationships and jokes between the players than there were at Liverpool. Everything was much more serious there. Here, you don't have to prove you are a professional - it is assumed."
Torres has once again explained that boardroom upheaval at Anfield - the transition from the era of Tom Hicks and George Gillett to that of NESV and FSG - convinced him to move on from Liverpool in January.
Describing the situation as "chaos", Torres says he felt he needed to join a club capable of challenging for major trophies immediately.
"I knew I was an idol for the fans but it wasn't the same anymore," Torres said. "The institution was in chaos with the sale. There was all this talk of possible projects.
"In many ways it reminded me of [former club] Atletico Madrid ... a great history, many ideas but without money. It needed time. I don't have that. People aren't honest in the world of football. You can't say the truth or be clear with people. It's a business and nobody is anyone's friend."
March 11, 2011, 8:48 AMThis Weekend’s Top European MatchupsBy ROB HUGHESSaturdayManchester United vs. ArsenalThe F.A. Cup, not the league, takes precedence in England this weekend. Nevertheless, this is the matchup between the two outstanding sides in the Premiership, and the outcome could define their seasons. After two defeats, United needs to get its rhythm back, if not for the sake of the Cup, then certainly in time for its Champions League encounter with Marseille on Tuesday. For that reason, it might rest key older players.Arsenal, however, will throw everything at Saturday.‘‘We need it, I must say,’’ acknowledged manager Arsene Wenger. ‘‘We have been touched severely recently, and we are chasing a win of this type.’’Even Wenger, a coaching psychologist par excellence, has a mighty task. He must convince his players that they are not tired, mentally and physically, after being so totally outplayed in Barcelona four days ago.Arsenal risked two unfit players there, and the gamble might haunt Wenger. Robin van Persie played little part before being red-carded at the Camp Nou, and Cesc Fàbregas is out of the match after aggravating his hamstring injury.Real Madrid vs. HerculesA match that should be a walkover at the Bernabéu for Madrid, but, once again, the Champions League will play on the mind of the Real players and coach.Cristiano Ronaldo is back in training but unlikely to be risked days before the European home game against Lyon. Kaká and Gonzalo Higuaín are among the injured, but Real Madrid’s coach, José Mourinho, has to balance the need to keep Real’s 100 percent home run going against the desire to keep the gifted but less athletic men like Mesut Özil fresh for next Wednesday.Hercules has won only one away match all season. It just happens to have been at Barcelona.Bayern Munich vs. HamburgForget the erratic stars Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben. The cameras here, and at Schalke’s game against Frankfurt, will be on the coaches. German clubs have different ways of dealing with fading domestic seasons — hang the coach out to dry.Munich’s solution to its underperforming champions is to put coach Louis van Gaal on notice that his contract will be severed at the end of this campaign. Schalke, despite doing well in the Cup and in Europe, leaves rumor to fester about the future of Felix Magath. The players, it seems, have their excuses.SundayManchester City vs. ReadingManchester City’s cups are overflowing, but not in the way its Gulf paymasters had hoped and intended.Slipping in the league and beaten in European competition in Kiev on Thursday, City has two days to prepare for Reading in the F.A. Cup.Manchester City’s coach, Roberto Mancini, is baffled by an unexplained allergy afflicting his volatile Italian, Mario Balotelli, and by conceding goals he calls ‘‘stupid.’’His team must overcome Reading, an upstart from a lower league that has so far taken the Cup scalps of two Premiership teams.Sevilla vs. BarcelonaThe second half of the weekly Spanish title affair. Lionel Messi approaches 50 goals for his season. Sevilla is not in the best of shape and without its injured striker Luís Fabiano. But Sevilla’s stadium, the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, will throb at the prospect of an upset, and the home players promise to run until they drop, as many opponents do against Barça.Roma vs. LazioIn the cauldron of Rome’s shared Olimpico stadium, this city rivalry makes all other things irrelevant for 90 minutes.Lazio lies in wait after a decent win over Palermo and a full week’s rest. Roma returns from Champions League elimination in Donetsk, trailing Lazio by five points in Serie A, under changed team management, and still in need of a buyer to pour funds into the club. All set, then, for Roma’s aging idol, Francesco Totti, to turn on what must be one of his last derby specials against the light blues, Lazio.
March 12, 2011, 12:07 AMArgentina Names Roster for U.S. TripBy ANDREW DASArgentina’s national team on Friday announced its roster for two exhibition games in the United States later this month. But it also includes some lesser-known players: defenders Federico Fazio (Sevilla) and Ezequiel Garay (Real Madrid); Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia; and Benfica forwards Eduardo Salvio and Nicolas Gaitan. Coach Sergio Batista has said he wants to look over younger players like them before Argentina hosts this summer’s Copa America and then starts World Cup qualifying for 2014.One name not on the list is Carlos Tevez’s, apparantly as continuing punishment for opting out of a game against Brazil last year. The complete list:Goalkeepers: Mariano Andujar (Catania), Adrian Gabbarini (Independiente, Argentina), Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar).Defenders: Javier Zanetti (Inter Milan), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Ezequiel Garay (Real Madrid), Gabriel Milito (Barcelona), Nicolas Otamendi (F.C. The Wilpon family's legal troubles would not prevent them from owning the 20th Major League Soccer team, though commissioner Don Garber is open to putting the expansion squad in another market.MLS wants a second franchise in New York, and had hoped to have something in place by 2013. The league is expanding to Portland, Ore., and Vancouver this year, and its 19th team begins play next season in Montreal. But Garber said Friday he needs more information on the owners of the relaunched Cosmos and their finances, and the Wilpons are being sued for at least $300 million by the trustee trying to recover money for the victims of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme."We're bullish about the opportunities, whether it's with the Cosmos alone or partnering them with others," Garber said. "It's possible that another market could jump in there, and if that happens, we'll move our efforts and plans in New York to a later time period. There are no shortage of folks that have interest in a team."Atlanta, San Diego, Las Vegas and Detroit have expressed interest in having a team, as have cities in Florida. The preference, though, is to have the new franchise in New York and create a rival for the Red Bulls, and Garber said he still thinks the Wilpons would make "great" owners. The Wilpons have strongly denied any wrongdoing, saying they were victims of Madoff's scheme. But the lawsuit has hurt their finances. The Wilpons acknowledged their New York Mets needed a loan from Major League Baseball in November, and said in January they were looking to sell a minority interest in the club to raise money. The Wilpons have insisted they would remain in control of the Mets."The success of our league is the core values of our ownership group and ... I believe the Wilpons fit very well with our owners in terms of who they are and their values and their ethics," Garber said. "I really hope they get through their issues quickly. I don't believe the full story has been told, and I am very supportive of them."
wow are they loaded. No Milito, no Tevez and they still can field an incredible attacking side. But hey US can field Jozy "I have not scored since King Tut was alive and I am nursing and injury and yet I am still the #1 choice" + "your guess is as good as mine" for a strike force :(Argentina names their roster for US game... no Tevez. NEW YORK (AP)—The 35 CONCACAF members are likely to vote as a bloc at the June 1 election for FIFA president, according to the secretary general for the North and Central America and Caribbean region.
Chuck Blazer said discussion on the issue will intensify during the CONCACAF Congress in Miami on May 3.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter is seeking a fourth term and may be opposed by Mohamed bin Hammam in the vote by the FIFA Congress. Pele has suggested UEFA President Michel Platini might also run.
CONCACAF has 35 votes, while Europe, Africa and Asia have about 50 apiece. South America and Asia have about 10 each.
“We have by and large had a history of voting collectively, so each national association places its own vote but does it I think in what will be the best interest collectively (of) the confederation, depending on the discussions that we would have at that time,” Blazer said Tuesday during a conference call.
The only American on FIFA’s ruling 24-man executive committee, Blazer is still upset the group didn’t increase CONCACAF’s berths for the 2014 World Cup to four. The committee voted last week that CONCACAF will remain at three automatic berths, with the chance for a fourth in a playoff.
“They knew I was angry when I sat in the room with them,” he said. “It was a situation where they were each maintaining their own interests.”
Because of the decision, CONCACAF will spend the next 10 days working on a revised World Cup qualifying format. The initial proposal would have required 24 games and eliminated the chance for the U.S. and Mexico to play each other.
Blazer also said CONCACAF may not send a representative to the 2015 Copa America, South America’s quadrennial championship. The U.S. went to the 2007 tournament and Mexico is going this year.
“Don’t put any bet on it happening the next time,” he said.
I think they're going back to the hex - they'll say it's because of lack of int'l dates or some BS, but in reality, Jack Warner and CONCACAF was counting on getting 4 full slots for 2014. That way he could have generated more money for the countries in his strong Carribean voting bloc through increased qualifying matches for them while also not seriously threatening the bigger fish in the confederation (namely, Mexico and the US) from not qualifying (i.e. with four full slots, just finish in the top 2 of the group and they're good to go).We know what happened next: he failed in getting the extra half slot. CONCACAF (and by extension FIFA) really cannot afford the US and Mexico (with their abundant TV rights fees and disposable income) to not make the World Cup. Economically (though not necessarily competitively), they're as important as any country for the World Cup.Wow, did you guys see this??? Look at the bold type

Tim Howard won the Cup with Manchester United and played in another Final with Everton I think two years ago.Holden went all 90 again as Bolton won 3-2 in the FA Cup Quarter Finals. My memory is not as good as it once was but I think the only American to ever have played in the FA Cup Final was John Harkes back in 1993 with Wednesday. I am positive Harkes was the first, but not sure if any US player has played in it since then.
yeah I was thinking Howard did. Davies had a very nice goal. I was sitting about even from where he took it and he just completely owned the keeper.DC and Toronto finished 2-2 tonight and Charleston and Chicago ended 0-0. The refereeing in the Charleston game was awful. The match ended as a 9v10 due to Charleston getting two reds and Chicago one (and one on someone on their bench!)Six matches in three nights and seven red cards, five of them straight reds. Pre-Season Friendlies?heard Davies had a nice goal today. Alves to Bojan 30th min, 1-0 Barca.
Dani Alves sometimes gets lost when credit is given out for Barca's success. He's a huge part of it, hope they resign him.
