Muslera had the play of the game with that save off his foot. He definitely deserved the player of the match.

Argentina had every opportunity to win this game, but they couldn't put it away. They have the talent but lack something in the center of the pitch.

 
So Sweden shows the fight, determination and resolve inherent in being true Americans and comes back to beat France for 3rd despite playing with 10.

 
That foot save and follow up save by the Uruguay GK was filthy.

And not a great PK by Tevez, but the Uruguay player who went immediately after hit exactly the same location symmetrically opposite side of the goal, fortunately on the side the GK didn't dive to.

####### cable once again didn't record the extra time of the Peru game, so I got to miss the goals. Hooray.

Classic goalkeeping - "make yourself as big as possible" on the save off the rebound after his foot save.Surprisingly, for a game with so much at stake, I thought it was pretty boring. Cool ending though, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pulling for Uruguay at the end.
 
I'm really glad to see Real going with a big name lineup here - Casillas, Ramos, Pepe, Carvalho, Mercelo, Coentrao, Kaka, Khedira, Granero. Hope they go with a similar lineup next week...

 
Some interesting rumors. Sooooo many of them. Nothing major has happened yet, is this one of those deals where when the first big piece lands the others will start to roll into place?

Yeah- MLS sales guys are pretty ruthless. I've gone to one total RB game at their new park- and that was for the stadium inaugural preseason game vs Santos (Brazil)... I still get monthly calls for this or that. Nice guy who calls though- Richie.

Am I really supposed to believe that the #1 team in the world is using 'proving all the doubters wrong' as their primary motivation?

 
A US national team being aggressive and pushing forward in the opening minutes of a game? I didn't realize that was legal.

I thought that too in the pregame montage. Seems more appropriate for Japan than the US....

Believe it.Who do you think gets more motivated... a team who has never won the big tournaments who wasn't predicted to win this one? Or the team who is #1 in the world, with 2 World Cup titles and won the last 2 Olympics, but was picked by most as the third best team in this one?It's sort of like the Spygate Patriots. A team who has been at the top and isn't given that respect then is more likely to get upset about it than say, the Detroit Lions would.

Who's "doubting" the US, though? Japan has been very impressive over the course of the tournament, but the US still has to be considered the favorite here.

The US has been doubted the whole tournament as not being the best team in the tournament when they are #1 ranked. Yes they are the favorite today, but they still have to win to prove the critics wrong that said the US wasn't the best team despite the #1 computer ranking.
 
Speaking of types of players I love... in order:

1) "The Destroyer" = central, defensive MF. See Ríos for Uruguay yesterday, or Marcos Senna for Spain during Euro2008.

2) "The Gunner" = speedy winger who can stretch the defense, make a cross or cut inside, and play technically one one one. See Gareth Bale.

3) "The Statue" = forward who plays with his/her back to the goal, can take a cross or through ball, and get a shot off with 1 or 0 touches. See Ruud van Nistelrooy. These players are typically leaders IMO, because otherwise they don't see the pitch.

*Note, all terrible nicknames are mine.
