James Riley in his career has already been chosen in three seperate MLS expansion drafts (San Jose, Seattle, and Montreal) That is likely to be a record he holds for a long long time.

He won't actually play for Montreal as he got traded to Chivas immediately.

Expansion Draft was held today. Ching went as the first pick even with the threat of retirement. Montreal may try and trade him back to Houston. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/11/23/ching-mapp-headline-montreal-expansion-draft-picks
thanks andy.Mapp, Nyassi and Valentin were all guys that jumped out at me as guys I'd want to want to take from that list. Trading for Braun was anice move too. Ching wasa risk- either they know something more than Ching's latest sounds (which IIRC have him retiring), or a complete waste.Overall, a nice job by the new guys. Will be interested to see what other moves they make- international players, DP, trades, etc.

agreed.Mapp was younger than I realized. With his Bruce Willis hair cut I assumed he was over 30 but he is only 27 and should provide some nice leadership to the team.Ted, what is the general feel from Union fans?***ito was not chosen from Seattle, but Montreal may have done better by picking Riley and trading him. Seattle will need to look for a new right back as I think Riley played a ton of games for them there.

I was totally fine with Mapp being selected, and I think most of the fanbase agrees with me. He provided some good moments during his 1 1/2 years for the U. But his play could be absolutely maddening at times, mainly due to his total overreliance on his left foot and his tendency to drift in and out of a number of games. There was a ton of speculation that Mapp was going to be the guy since he was former teammates with Montreal coach Jesse Marsch. I got 10 of the U's protected slots out of 11 right - thought they'd keep Freddy over Keon Daniel but I get why they left Freddy exposed ($$$)Plus they picked up another wing midfielder from Vancouver in the waiver draft yesterday (Nizar Khalfan) Not saying he's a Mapp replacement, but Whitecaps fans on Facebook seemed upset to lose him so there's that.

How does the waiver draft work? Is it related to the unprotected players left after the expansion draft or was the waiver list something different?

Honestly, I had no idea it was happening until the team put out a release saying they picked the guy up. I guess a bunch of players got waived after the expansion draft. The Union waived two players as well. As far as I know, Khalfan was the only player selected. This league is confusing sometimes :)

yeah. And each of these has various levels of complication to them.

you forgot reality tv gameshow.

@KING5Sports has learned that #Sounders broadcaster Arlo White is moving on. He's expected to be the lead voice for NBC's soccer coverage.

Very nice for NBC. Will be interesting to see who they partner him with. He will call both MLS and US National Team games.

First off, #### that guy. Second, what's the deal with his international retirement? Is he just trying to get out of the Africa Cup of Nations, or is he really never going to play internationally again?

If this has already been posted please ignore. The dates have been made public for the next round of WCQing involving the US. No venues announced yet. Team listed first is home team. Not a single weekend date for any game.

What do Bulgaria, Finland, Guatemala, Saudi Arabia, and New Zealand all have in common?

All those teams are ranked lower than Antigua & Barbuda.

WTF is this? 11 on 22?
That Antigua & Barbuda v. Trinidad & Tobago game was a massive cluster####. And don't get me started on St. Vincent and the Grenadines...
I'd like to schedule a "home-and-home qualifier" with St. Vincent, ifyouknowwhatImean.
She's playing here in 3 weeks. If I play my cards right, maybe I can hoof it up her Route 1 post-show.

Just saw Clarence Goodson and his wife looking for a place to live in Copenhagen on a recent episode of House Hunters International. My wife was in the other room watching and yelled out that there was a soccer player on House Hunters knowing full well that I would come in to check it out. Sure enough, there was "Clay" Goodson looking for a place to live in downtown Copenhagen after he signed with Brondby.

Remember that American Samoa team that won its first game ever last week? There was also a first on that team... The first transgendered player to play in a FIFA WC Qualifying match. From NYTimes today

A First in Cup Qualifying for a Player and a TeamJonny Saelua, right, who is transgender, helped American Samoa's men's team earn its first international win on Tuesday.By JAMES MONTAGUEPublished: November 25, 2011APIA, Samoa — Jonny Saelua did not always envision herself as an international soccer player. What she really wanted to do was join a dance company and “travel the world just performing.”“Anything modern, jazz, maybe a little bit of ballet,” said Saelua, a center back for American Samoa’s men’s team and a performing arts major at the University of Hawaii. But for now, Saelua is doing her dancing in cleats. On Tuesday, the 23-year-old Saelua played a key role in American Samoa’s 2-1 victory against Tonga in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. It was American Samoa’s first victory in international soccer, ending a 30-game losing streak in which it had been outscored by 229-12. And Saelua apparently became the first transgender player to compete on a World Cup stage.Saelua is part of the fa’afafine, biological males who identify themselves as a third sex in Polynesian culture. Fa’afafine means “to be a woman” in Samoan. According to 30-year-old Alex Su’a, who heads the Samoa Fa’afafine Society, there are 1,500 fa’afafine in Samoa and American Samoa.“To be fa’afafine you have to be Samoan, born a man, feel you are a woman, be sexually attracted to males and, importantly, proud to be called and labeled fa’afafine,” Su’a said.“The fa’afafine are culturally accepted,” he said. “They have a role in Samoan society. They are the caretakers of the elders because their brothers and sisters get married, but the fa’afafine traditionally don’t.”Saelua agreed: “In Samoa the fa’afafine are very reliable. We can do what the boys do and what the girls do.”In an immensely popular sport that is still encountering episodes of racism in any number of spots on the globe, it is noteworthy that Saelua has been easily accepted by her teammates. She began playing soccer at age 11, in private school. By age 14, she had risen to be an international player for American Samoa.“I read somewhere that it was a record when I was drafted into the national team,” Saelua said. “I was reserve the whole tournament and I had to leave because I was still in high school.”She added that the coach “ put me in for 10 minutes.”But she is now older, and integral to the team. “I just go out and play soccer as a soccer player,” Saelua said. “Not as transgender, not as a boy and not as a girl. Just as a soccer player.”When the American Samoa coach Thomas Rongen — who took the United States under-20 team to three World Cup finals and won the Major League Soccer title with D.C. United in 1999 — was hired three weeks ago, he promoted Saelua to the starting lineup for the first time. His faith was repaid. In the match against Tonga, Saelua provided an assist on one goal and made a 90th-minute goal-line clearance with American Samoa’s goalkeeper Nicky Salapu already beaten on the play.“He’s like a brother to us and he’s like a sister to us,” Salapu said of Saelua.“In the Samoan way, lots of people are making jokes about them,” he added in reference to the fa’afafine. “It’s difficult for their situation. I let people do whatever they want. It’s their life. He’s part of our family right now.”Saelua, in effect returning the compliment, said she owed her confidence to the fact that teammates “make me feel like a part of them.”“They don’t make me feel different because I am the way I am,” she said. “It is what anybody needs to feel wanted within a team. That is why I always do my best. I can’t let them down.”American Samoa followed up its victory by tying Cook Islands, 1-1, on Thursday. On Saturday, it plays Samoa in a game that will decide who will advance to the next round of World Cup qualification, and move at least one small step closer to Brazil 2014.For American Samoa, actually qualifying for the World Cup finals remains an almost unobtainable dream, but Saelua has hope that it could happen someday. For now though, she is concentrating on winning American Samoa’s second international game and in the process providing hope to those who do not necessarily feel they fit into a traditional male sports culture.“I hope I can inspire people,” Saelua said. “Not only transgender but anybody who feels different in their society or community. If there’s something you love to do, go out and don’t let anybody stop you from chasing after your dreams.”

Also, my Atleti play Real today at 2:00 PM Eastern. They're up against it though, as CRonaldo and Benzema together have scored more goals in la liga than all of Altético. Also Atlético has the worst away record scoring only 1 goal and getting only 1 point in like 7 games. They even lost 3-2 after being up a man for most of the game against Getafe.

Crazy game at Old Trafford....

Chicharito has a deflection go off of him and into the net for the 1-0 lead, then Rio Ferdinand gets robbed of a really nice tackle and the ref awards the PK to tie it at 1. Jonas gets sent off in the ~75th and Newcastle pack 9 players inside their own 18 for basically the entire last 15 minutes, with a number of massive saves from Tim Krul and goalline clearances. Chicharito scores in the 94th but he's just 6 inches offside and the goal doesn't count.

The clearance by Simpson was insane. Really heroic defending from Taylor and Sideshow Bob all game.

That draw at Old Trafford is going to cause the need for the rest of the league to hope Liverpool can get points off of Man City else Man City is going to go 7 points clear.

Spurs are quietly mounting a shot at second place. They are 2 points behind ManU with a game in hand and a very decent schedule the next three games.

Some interesting stadium porn came out of San Jose this week. They are 2 weeks away from what they consider the last major hurdle in getting approval.

Here are some basic architectural drawings along with some interesting memo's about the stadium.

Looks to be a simple but nice stadium, a cut above PHP, BMO and Crew Stadium, but no where near as nice as LiveStrong, PPL Park, or Red Bull Arena.

It will hold 18k to start with a 2-3k standing room and obvious easy expansion possibilities should that be needed in the future.

If this gets built, that leaves only the Revs, Sounders and DC stuck in non soccer stadiums for US based teams.

Seattle can make a case that they belong in the larger stadium now.

DC is a financial disaster so something has to change with RFK.

NE has no reason to ever move unless some municipality kicks in serious money for them to build a soccer stadium.

Barcelona often plays Mascherano at center-back, right? Arsenal should just do that with Alex Song. Vermaelen is good, Koscielny is serviceable, and Mertesacker/Djourou suck...

Thanks for that andy- :thumbup:Simple is an understatement- that's about as spare and cheap a building as you're going to find, if built as shown. I guess that's good for finances, butnot very inspiring as a public space. Something's better than nothing though- although with all that silicon valley money right there, I would have expected more. Hopefully the detailing will be more elegant than the schematic drawings shown.I also wonder- and given the drawings, Im going to guess its financial- but why have a horse-shoe plan and not have the field fully encircled? Might also be a siting issue where they don't have enough room for the grandstands on that one end.

Mertesacker has been an unusual disappointment. Solid tackler and ok in the air, but seems a step off the pace of the EPL, especially the way Arsenal want to play.Great result for Fulham. I only caught the last 20 minutes or so- but at some point the possession stat said it was actually in Fulham's advantage? Was it really that "evenly" played? The last 20 minutes, Fulham was definitely dug in deep- but I did appreciate that they were still trying to play the ball out of the back... even if it burned them a few times.

All good points. Some comments1) It is very simple, but the roof gives it an edge on other stadiums that are just as simple but no roof, like PHP2) It was originally designed to only hold 15k, but they expanded the design to 18k. I do not know why they went with the horseshoe, but it is probably for ease of expansion in the future should they need it. If they went fully enclosed with 18k, it would be more expensive to expand if needed in the future.3) Everything was designed in terms of finance. The SJ owner does not swim with Anschuntz, Red Bull, Kronkee, and the other billionaire owners so he has been trying to keep the cost of the stadium as low as possible, which makes it look pretty bare bones.4) However, when you remember that they are current playing in basically a defunct college baseball stadium right now, even this simple stadium should be a nice upgrade for them.

Fulham took the air out of the ball. They might have been even in possession, but they did a lot more passing back. Which isn't to say that Arsenal produced many more chances until the end. Arsenal improved quite a bit after introducing Diaby and Gervinho, who gave them some more ideas. Arshavin and Ramsey both had poor games, IMO. With that said, Arsenal was probably a bit hard done by. Schwarzer had a magnificent save off Djourou's header on a corner.
