No love for Santos-Barcelona?Best two clubs in the world going at it tonight--well, the two finalists anyway.
I'm looking forward to this one but no idea what time or channel they're airing it in the US. If anyone can relay the deets, I'd appreciate it.
Live at 5:30 AM ET on Fox Soccer Channel tomorrow morning. Replay at 7:00 PM ET tomorrow evening on Fox Soccer Channel.
Gonna need lots of :coffee:
I'm stoked this will be in HD. Just need to remember to fire up the DVR when I get home. Arsenal-City should be good too. Plus my Skins are going to take it to ShEli and the Giants. A lot to catch up on after work tomorrow.

VIENNA -- The Austrian soccer federation says Andreas Herzog will become assistant to United States men's coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The former Austrian midfielder played 103 international matches and scored 26 goals between 1998 and 2003, the most among Austrian players. He left his post as coach of Austria's under-21 team Friday, the federation said Saturday."Jurgen Klinsmann and I have been close friends for many years now. I face this new challenge with great confidence," Herzog said in the Austrian federation's statement.Herzog and Klinsmann were teammates at Bayern Munich when the German club won the UEFA Cup in 1996.No details about Herzog's contract with the U.S. soccer federation were revealed. After stints with Rapid Vienna, Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich, Herzog played for the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2004. He was assistant to Austria coaches Josef Hickersberger and Karel Brueckner before taking over the under-21 team in March 2009.His first match as assistant to Klinsmann will be a Jan. 21 exhibition against Venezuela, followed by an exhibition against Panama four days later.

Daniel Sturridge is really, really good.
Sturridge has really come into his own as an offensive player this season. No doubt. But he really needs to bring more defensively. Totally uninterested and I felt bad watching Drogba pin players in only to be given an easy outlet because Sturridge was slowly walking away. He needs to be a more complete player before I'm willing to call him really, really good. AVB needs to give him a kick in the ### but it's likely hard to do when the guy is in a zone like he is and is scoring for fun.
I think Ivanovic at RB has helped a bit to alleviate Sturridge's unwillingness to track back (that side is a nightmare with Sturridge and Bosingwa).Mata had the same problem, but has been slowly improving. Unfortunately, Sturridge really hasn't.

I agree, but he's still so young/unproven for Chelsea....maybe he'll grow a bit? His ball skills are very impressive, though.

Watching Santos - Barca in preparation for this afternoon's Citeh - Gunners game (with Arsenal in the Barcelona role, obviously).

Sturridge complains that he's being used on the wing, but he's probably not going to play in the center at Chelsea any time soon with Drogba, Torres and Lukaku on the roster. He's left-footed, and AVB likes to play him on the right so he can work to the center with his strong foot (same with Mata on the left), and that tactic has been an adjustment for him. It did not go unnoticed among Chelsea fans that his beautiful cross to Mierles on Monday against Man City came off his right foot from the right wing. He also scored yesterday with his right foot, after taking the cross from Cole with his left.

30 minutes in and the biggest disparity between these two teams that I can see is the defensive positioning. City are obviously the more talented team, but I don't think that the gap is quite as large from the midfield forward. City, unlike Arsenal, look very disciplined in the back....and Arsenal look like the keystone cops. Alex Song and Thomas Vermaelen can only bail out the other guys so many times before City breaks through.

This is like a discussion of college basketball and ignoring the Big East, the ACC, the Big Ten and the PAC 12.

But a lot of information on the Mid American Conference.

After I posted this, City's looked a lot more lax in defense. Really wish RvP could've made the most of that opportunity.

Post anything you like in here. It is a general discussion thread. People obviously post on things they watch and the EPL is by far the most popular league for people in the thread but many us enjoy reading info on other leagues even if we don't watch them too often.

Well, I think that's about as encouraging a loss as you're going to ever see. IMO, Arsenal weren't nearly at their best today and nearly scraped out a point on the road at City. Props to City, they earned the win, Joe Hart was fantastic down the stretch. I thought Gervinho had a poor game, and Ramsey had one of his worst games of the season. Song and Vermaelen were superb again, and I liked a lot of what I saw from Arteta. I might even go so far as to say that Arsenal won the battle in the center midfield, even with Ramsey playing (again, IMO) a sub-par game compared to his earlier performances. I think there's plenty to like if you're an Arsenal fan....they're not going to win the title, but a surge into the top 3-4 isn't out of the question. :2cents:

Winter break is here for the Bundesliga.

The top of the table:

3 - Schalke 04 11-1-5 38:22 34 points

4 - Borussia Mönchengladbach 10-3-4 25:11 33 points

How long is the break typically and what do teams do during the break?

The break lasts for a little over a month. The 18th spieltag (gameday) is the weekend of January 20-22.There is a winter transfer window and after the holidays teams will play a few friendlies, usually against lower level teams. The third round of the DFB Pokal is this week as well.BL2 is off until the first weekend of February

I recall from the years I lived in Germany that many of the Bundesliga guys formed futsal teams and played in mini-leagues or tournaments over the winter break.

All three Americans started for Rangers and Boca had a goal.

Edu was subbed at halftime though. Not sure if due to injury or a tactical move.

I think, in the end, lack of depth killed Arsenal (as well as a lack of a scoring option outisde of van Persie).City really should have scored in the first 30 minutes, Aresenal were the better side the next 30, and then during the crunch when Arsenal were pushing City went to Milner, De Jong, and Dzeko and Arsenal went to Miquel, Arshavin, and Chamakh. There really is quite the quality gap there and I think it showed as City were able to close out without too much problem.

Suarez gone for 8 games. Wow.
Yeah, it's poop. As mentioned way earlier in the thread where it was suggested that myself and other Liverpool fans were "coming off bad" by saying that we didn't think Suarez did it, I will be the first to take my medicine. Everything I've read about it still makes me think that he didn't do it, as the word he used has a different meaning in Uruguay than it does in England, but he still should have known better. Liverpool were finally looking like they could break into the Top 4, but will now be without their best player for months. Major poop.

That was me but i never said he didn't do it. I was calling into question Evra's past because people were calling into question Suarez'.Haven't completely read the article, but will be interesting to see if they appeal.

Yeah, but that was the comment made. I was doing the same thing. Liverpool will appeal.
Liverpool have angrily responded to the news that Luis Suarez has been banned for eight matches and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

The club released a statement released on their official website - which was removed 30 minutes later - they would take every step possible to fight the punishment and also called on the FA to charge Evra for the abuse levelled at Suarez.

Suarez also tweeted: "Today is a very difficult and painful day for me and my family"

The club statement read: "We look forward to the publication of the Commission's Judgment. We will study the detailed reasons of the Commission once they become available, but reserve our right to appeal or take any other course of action we feel appropriate with regards to this situation.

"We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no-one else on the field of play - including Evra's own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials - heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken.

"The Club takes extremely seriously the fight against all forms of discrimination and has a long and successful track record in work relating to anti-racist activity and social inclusion. We remain committed to this ideal and equality for all, irrespective of a person's background.

"LFC considers racism in any form to be unacceptable - without compromise. It is our strong held belief, having gone over the facts of the case, that Luis Suarez did not commit any racist act. It is also our opinion that the accusation by this particular player was not credible - certainly no more credible than his prior unfounded accusations.

"It is key to note that Patrice Evra himself in his written statement in this case said 'I don't think that Luis Suarez is racist'. The FA in their opening remarks accepted that Luis Suarez was not racist.

"Luis himself is of a mixed race family background as his grandfather was black. He has been personally involved since the 2010 World Cup in a charitable project which uses sport to encourage solidarity amongst people of different backgrounds with the central theme that the colour of a person's skin does not matter; they can all play together as a team.

"He has played with black players and mixed with their families whilst with the Uruguay national side and was captain at Ajax Amsterdam of a team with a proud multi-cultural profile, many of whom became good friends.

"It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised.

"It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

"We would also like to know when the FA intend to charge Patrice Evra with making abusive remarks to an opponent after he admitted himself in his evidence to insulting Luis Suarez in Spanish in the most objectionable of terms. Luis, to his credit, actually told the FA he had not heard the insult."

It's not like Suarez is new to international soccer. The differing meaning angle was never going to fly.

I think the standard is rather absurd to be honest. Eight games... sheesh, but I guess that's what the norm is for racial abuse.

Liverpool can appeal, but there is no way the FA is going to change the charge. Not after all the time they spent to come up with it. I suppose he might get the games cut back to four or five if he apologizes and does some charity work. Apologizing would essentially be admitting to it so maybe that's not a bad option. At least everybody will know exactly what happened.

Edit: Isn't he still under investigation for the finger to the Fulham fans? That could be another 3+ games. Not a good start for Mr. Suarez.

Bayern advance to the DFB Pokal quarterfinals with a squeaker over VfL Bochum today. Bayern win 2-1 on a 91st minute goal by Robben.

Is there actual evidence for the claims against Suarez and Terry, or just he said, uh, he said?
The Suarez back-and-forth took place in the box before a corner and supposedly numerous people including an official heard it.

Two random notes from Twitter this morning:

1. Stu Holden sat with the fans behind the net during yesterday's Bolton game, apparently. Pretty cool of him to do that.

2. Zenit are making advances toward Arshavin. Rumor is that he's been offered a player/coach role as a senior player and the coach of the U-18s. WTF?

You know, I watched the Bolton game yesterday and thought to myself "g7, that looks like Stu Holden in the stands. Can't he get a better seat than that, or maybe one on the bench?" Looked like he was having a great time, especially after the second goal. Looked to me like maybe his dad or someone was sitting next to him? I dunno.

Might have been, I don't know. He's had a bunch of people tweeting at him with pictures of him posing with the fans in the stands behind the goal and thanking him for spending time with the fans.

How has Arshavin been getting along this year? It seems like he hasn't really lived up to his potential there.

Probably slightly less popular with Gooners than Nasri and syphillis. The difference between Gervinho and Arshavin is pretty stark. Unless you really value dribbling straight at the defense and losing the ball, in which case the little Russian is your man.

Youtube link is dead. If the article is accurate, I don't see how the GK should've gotten a red card...he kicked the guy who was running on the field!Any other video links?
Video on the right.Or one of these two...

I'm thinking it'll probably make Sportscenter tho.

Manzano is likely done at Atlético de Madrid after they lost 1-0 at home vs. Albacete in la Copa del Rey today. Albacete is a 3rd division team (Segunda B). The fans were all over him and the players, so he's lost the backing of the supporters.

Rumors are that Cholo Simeone (former Argentina international) may be the next coach. Something's going to give in the next 24-48 hours IMO.

Phil Jones suffered a broken cheekbone today vs some JV squad that got smashed 5-0.

Kinda sucks, no Vidic, Fletcher, Jones....very depleted back line for United. Smalling and Rio are the only two healthy cb's available for awhile, expect some not so clean sheets.

Gervinho (and Chamakh) will be headed off to the ANC in a few weeks. Arshavin is the most experienced replacement but Oxlade-Chamberlain or CY Park may get a run in.
