####ing better not be Martinez. Rafa, obviously yeah. The other name I'm hearing is Brendan Rodgers....unsure
:confused:Martinez and Rodgers are two of the top young managers in England (Martinez especially) and you prefer retread Benitez who was already ran out of town once? Reliving the past hasn't worked the past two seasons.
The last two seasons have been because Benitez was wrongly forced out. He knows most of the players. He set up the youth and academy structures and already has a relationship with the coaches running it. With the Euro Cup, Olympics, and early start for UEFA Cup qualifying, a new manager won't have much time to implement their new ideas. Most of the players already know what Rafa wants from his team. Seems like the best choice to me. I'm afraid the owners want their own person though. They also might be afraid of a financial hit from fans that would be upset about Rafa's return.

I am sure everyone has seen this already but I will post in case anyone wants to discuss. England's Euro SquadGoalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Robert Green (West Ham United), John Ruddy (Norwich City)Defenders: Ashley Cole (Chelsea), John Terry (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Leighton Baines (Everton), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), Gary Cahill (Chelsea)Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur), Gareth Barry (Manchester City), James Milner (Manchester City), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Manchester United)Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur)Standby: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea).
Interesting. They only have on right fullback and it happens to be Glen Johnson :yucky: .
what a cluster of a roster. At least they can't underperform this year. No one can rightly expect that roster to compete for much of anything. There are several questionable picks honestly, but....Downing? :lmao:

Brendan Rodgers would be a good choice IMO.His work at Swansea is pretty impressive, winning promotion and then finishing solidly in the middle of the table this season. He also worked under Mourinho at Chelsea, which I'm sure most people would count as a positive. He's also a really good manager on FM12, for what that's worth.

Getting out of their group without Rooney for most of it will be a small miracle.

That's going to be a really interesting group.France is the favorite on paper, but they're France so who knows. Ukraine is going to be tough as host. Sweden is nothing special but they're good enough to take advantage if England and/or France implode.Rooney will miss the France and Sweden matches but be back for Ukraine. If England can get by Sweden without him they may be ok.

Martinez also couldn't hack it at Wigan. Wigan. Roy Hodgson 2.0.
What?? Wigan will be relegated the season after Martinez leaves. He's the only reason they've stayed up this long.

Let me clarify my statement. I actually like Martinez, and yes, he is the only reason why Wigan has stuck around. What I meant was, in my opinion, was that getting a manager (and players) from a second rate club helped turn Liverpool into a second rate club. So, even though I like him, I think bringing in Martinez would just be more of the same. They need a world-class manager to resurrect this squad.Sorry for the confusion. Quick post from my phone.

Is Micah Richards hurt?
I don't think so. Just appears to be not selected. http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/man-city/euro-2012/news/richards-no-one-will-be-cheering-louder-than-me_27618.html
I can't believe he chose Phil Jones over Richards.
Jones was a good selection because he is diverse. He can play center back and defensive midfield. He's simply not very good at right back though. I think Hodgson took far too many midfielders. Certainly, too many considering he is leaving one position with no natural back-up.
The Kyle Walker injury on Sunday really hurts England.

That makes more sense, but I hate to tell you, Liverpool is pretty close to second rate club at this time. I doubt a world-class manager would want the job.

I don't believe he's out because of injury. Redknapp has said it was just a knock. He had a broken toe from the game prior, but it doesn't take long for a toe to heal, plus he played pretty well up until he got stepped on.I think he just wasn't picked.

According to this article (contains quotes from Hodgson) that is not correct. Hodgson also says pretty directly that he chose Jones over Richards, it was one or the other.

Somewhat true, but there's only a handful of huge clubs. Liverpool might be the best job opening out there this summer, depending whether Chelsea and Inter keep their interim managers.

Oh, I'm well aware. I mentioned that in my post. I was never too keen on bringing in Adam, Henderson or Downing to begin with, but no one expected the level of suckitude they fell to this year. I was excited about Carroll and Suarez, and still remain as such. Of course, Carroll's form at the end helped make it a little bit better. But I don't think they can get back to the Top 4 without overhauling about 80% of the roster, and that's going to take someone with an eye for international talent.

This probably goes without saying, but Abramovich is a lunatic if he lets RDM go, win or lose on Saturday.

I think the bolded is true regardless of what he does with Di Matteo, but I agree it should be an easy choice to keep him.

What American's will play in UCL next season as of now?Assuming Friedel stays at Spurs and Chelsea does not win, he will be in UCL qualifying. Sacha will be in UCL qualifying I believe as Belgium champions. Anyone else? I think both Jozy and Gooch miss out. The guys at Rangers miss out because of the financial mess.
Real quick look shows (1) Michael Parkhurst (his team has qualified for either 1st/2nd, which will make Champions League qualifying) and, if you want to count him, because he probably shouldn't be counted, (2) Terrence Boyd at Dortmund. There may be more out there too.
We missed an obvious one. Jermaine Jones with Schalke 04. I believe they will be in the group stage.

It was the worst league season since they were promoted to the 1st Division in 1954. Previous Liverpool managers have been sacked for far better performances. That plus the poor seasons from the new signings, his continued reliance on them, and his handling of the Suarez affair meant he had to go.
Liverpool fan, and I agree. Think the 38 games in the league tell the true story, so, legend or not, he had to go.Rafa would be my first choice, but Martinez has done great work and I'd be OK with him signing. Not sure why that's controversial?

Sounds like Barca need to sign him. ;)Have never run into many Real Madrid fans around here either. A couple of friends I work with are big fans but I've seen maybe two RM jerseys out watching games at bars.
Not to overgeneralize or anything, but I've found that the majority of RM fans are recent latino immigrants, rather than second generation latinos. I'm not sure why, but it might have to do with the spread of RM into latin america in the early 2000s with the Galáticos. Just a theory.
Or maybe rooting for RM was passed down from earlier generations who started rooting for them because Hugo Sanchez played there. Who knows? I have to say I see many more Barcelona jerseys/t-shirts than any others, but that could just be due to the fact they've been on top recently. There is one RM fan who works the register at the local Costco - made a point to avoid that line on trips there in the last month or so.

Chelsea can compete with those clubs financially, but is not in the same class in terms of big club status ... yet.

In soccer, money buys championships and with enough championships you get status. Liverpool has both. They will rise again and it will be a sought after job opening. The Big 2 in English football are United and Liverpool, followed by Arsenal. It would take decades to change this and the only one of those three that's even touchable in that timeframe is Arsenal. The billionaire teams might get there eventually, but it's going to take time and a significant amount of "outside help". Liverpool, United, and Arsenal are all self-sustaining (as our teams like Barca, RM, Bayern, Inter, Milan, etc.). They are just dominate international brands. They may go through ups and downs, but their financial might is always going to allow them to outshine the competition over the long-run.

If I had to pick a team it would probably be Germany. I don't think they are the best team, but they are so incredibly consistent you know they will be right there.

Easy to respect, hard to like. I'm half German and I still can't bring myself to root for them unless they're playing Italy.

I'd go with the Dutch at +700. Tough group, but I don't give Portugal much of a shot. And they'd draw a team from the fairly easy Group A in the quarters. Spain and Germany aren't long enough to provide any value, IMO.

Thoughts on Italy? That's a pretty long price.

I don't understand why people don't like the way Germany plays, although I know this is a very common sentiment. I've always loved the way the German national team plays soccer, but I was introduced to the game by Germans while living in Germany in '86 (the year they played in the World Cup final against Argentina in Mexico), so I am perhaps biased.I put a small bet on the Germans at +300 about a month ago.

I agree, and I have no special reason to like Germany. I just find the German national team and Bayern Munich to play some of the most entertaining soccer out there.

Personally I like Germany or the Netherlands.

I like watching Germany play too. Far moreso than Italy or England.

It's not exactly the beautiful game that the Spanish and Italian teams play, nor do the Germans have the dazzle of the great South American teams. That being said, that's part of what I love about international soccer. The contrast in styles and their inevitable collisions in high stakes matches with the best players in the world. There is nothing better. Me loves me some Euros.

I thought Kenny stepping down was somewhat surprising (although I guess it's not given the nature of manager firings in EPL), but to actually ADVOCATE for Rafa Benitez after the atrocity that was his first Liverpool manager run is sheer insanity.

Liverpool fans, what makes you think he'll be any better now?

A European Cup, FA Cup, another CL final, and consistent top 4 performance is an atrocity now? Rafa worked miracles with incompetent owners and management. He was rarely given the investment he wanted (or was promised) and even when he was, Rick Perry often screwed up the transfers. Even then, it didn't completely fall apart until Rafa lost almost all of his backing from ownership and a few specific people in the club saw an opportunity to abuse their power to run him out. With even halfway decent ownership that is willing to get into the transfer market early and acquire his primary targets, I would expect equal or better performances. I promise he would do a lot better with 100m+ pounds than the likes of Carroll, Henderson, Adam, and Downing.

This might not be quite as good as his incredible goal against Keller last year but Hasli came up with an absolute gem last night. The type that no keeper in the world could save even if they knew it was coming. Degree of difficulty on this type of volley is so high.

Skip to about the 4:55 minute mark in video as the goal came in injury time.
