I've always been wondered about Donovan.

He's a great talent and someone that's always show up for the USMNT - and had a couple great WCs. He's never done anything particularly bad and he's grown up in the limelight from 16 on. Tons of respect for the guy.

OTOH... I've always wondered what would be if he had the same 'crazy hunger' he talks about Dempsey having. Seems like that's just never been important to him in the same way.

It's his life, so I'm not being critical. Everyone's got to do what's right for them. Just more of a 'what if' kind of thing.

Landon is just an odd dude. Always has been. He's the most accomplished US field player in history, but there's just something I've never loved about the guy. He was great in South Africa, but he's always had a bit of a "too cool for school" thing going on that I just never dug.

Either way, its his life and his career. If he's done, he's done. He wouldn't be the first guy to quit playing internationally before he's truly done.

Yeah I agree. Landon has been a great player on the field and more important off the field than many people realize but to quote Apollo Creed, he has never really had that Eye of the Tiger. He wanted no part of Europe when he was younger and seemed to go over only because he had too only to find ways to come home even if it meant failure. And good lord, please do something besides commentating. He is so boring when he talks probably because he hates it.

I wonder if Landon contemplated retiring from the international game this past year?

There has to be something to him missing so many US games in a row and JK's cryptic comment about not wanting to dig into old issues about Landon.

I think he is the best player to ever play for the US but to be honest, if Holden was healthy, I am not sure Landon would even be a starter any more.

Hopefully he can find the energy and focus needed for one more run.

Toronto continues to play well as long as its not a MLS game :) . Toronto won the Canadian Championship tonight by beating Vancouver and picking up the CCL berth.

Agree to disagree there...Landon was great in the EPL this year. That alone tells me he is still starter material.

I'd like to see Llorente over Soldado and Torres. Torres has seemed more effective on the wing anyway than in the striker role. But they have so many attacking options, the only one I see who I'd start every game is Iniesta.

LA's disastor of a season continues.

Last night they had a 2-0 lead at home with 15 minutes left and lost 3-2. LA, who talked about as possibly having the best team ever in MLS before the season started is in dead last place in the West.

In the last three games Alan Gordon has scored a goal in the 88th, 90th and 94th minutes to secure points for SJ(two draws and the win against LA). That is quite a run of late dramatics.

Juan Pablo Angel is one of the coolest foreigners to ever play in MLS. After being easily NY's best foreign signing ever, he was sent packing to make room for Henry and Marquez.

Last night he came back to Red Bull Arena for the first time with Chivas and scored a really nice goal and refused to celebrate out of respect for the fans. He appeared to really appreciate the banners unfurled when he was introduced and the song sung by supporters at the 9 minute mark.

He is one of those guys that just "gets it".

That's absurd.

My semi educated guess on the last 4 US cutsWilliams, Zusi, Agudelo, Morales
Makes sense to me.
Isn't Corona on the list too... I think either Agudelo or Zusi stays, Corona goes.
Yup, I could see that. More Zusi than Agudelo though. With Wondo, Herc, Jozy, Dempsey and Boyd all on the roster, probably no need for another striker like Agudelo even if Dempsey plays more of an AM role. If Agudelo makes it, it will likely be in place of Boyd or Wondo.

The straight red against LA was a bit iffy.
Yeah Becks had a ton to say about the reffing in this game. The type of quotes that usually come with decent sized fines from other players.

2011-12 Americans Abroad Best XIBy Paul Kennedy, Thursday, May 24, 2012Never have so many Americans done so well for their clubs abroad. Three members of our 2011-12 Americans Abroad Best XI won league titles. Many played on title challengers or teams that competed in continental play. Several players enjoyed breakout seasons at new clubs. And in the case of Clint Dempsey at Fulham, he enjoyed the best season an American has ever had in the English Premier League. Here's our best XI:BRAD FRIEDEL (Tottenham). Friedel is still going strong at the age of 41. He didn't miss a beat when he moved to Tottenham, his fourth club in his 15-year EPL career. He extended his EPL iron-man record to 304 consecutive starts as Spurs finished fourth in the EPL. Unfortunately, Chelsea's UEFA Champions League title knocked Spurs out of Europe's elite competition next season. Stats: EPL: 38 games.STEVE CHERUNDOLO (Hannover 96). The longest-serving American at a European club, Cherundolo completed his 13th season with Hannover 96, which clinched a berth in the Europa League for the second consecutive year. Stats: Bundesliga: 22 games; Europa League: 11 games.CARLOS BOCANEGRA (Rangers). Bocanegra was brought in from French club St. Etienne at the start of the season and settled in quickly at Rangers. It was a tumultuous season as Rangers went into bankruptcy and the future of the players was in doubt. But Bocanegra impressed on and off the field, captaining Rangers in the absence of Steven Davis. Stats: SPL: 29 games, 2 goals; Europa League: 1 game.MICHAEL PARKHURST (FC Nordsjaelland). Parkhurst came close with the New England Revolution, playing on three MLS Cup runner-up teams. He won the SAS Ligaen title in Denmark with FC Nordsjaelland, which clinched its first league title to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League. Parkhurst had an assist on the winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Brondby in the next-to-last game of the season that thrust Nordsjaelland into first place. Stats: SPL: 29 games, 2 goals; Europa League: 2 games.OGUCHI ONYEWU (Sporting Lisbon). It was quite a season for Gooch, who settled in at Sporting after struggling to regain his form in the two seasons after his knee injury in 2009. Another knee injury sidelined him in the middle of the 2011-12 season, but Onyewu came back to earn a call-up for the upcoming national team games. Stats: Liga Zon Zagres: 17 games, 4 goals; Europa League: 5 games.MICHAEL BRADLEY (Chievo Verona). Bradley became the first American to start for an Italian Serie A club since Alexi Lalas in the mid-1990s. Some questioned how well Bradley would do in Italy after a unhappy final season in Germany with Borussia Moenchengladbach. But Bradley played very well for Chievo, and his improved play and growing confidence were evident in a man-of-the-match performance for the USA against Italy in their February friendly.  Stats: Serie A: 35 games, 1 goal.DAMARCUS BEASLEY (Puebla). After seven seasons in Europe, the 30-year-old Beasley was at the crossroads in terms of his career. A move to Mexico was a gamble, but he thrived at Puebla, playing all but one game and improving as the season went on. Stats: Torneo Apertura: 16 games, 2 goal. Torneo Clausura: 17 games, 5 goalsSACHA KLJESTAN (Anderlecht). Kljestan won his first league championship in seven seasons as a pro as Anderlecht convincingly won the Belgian title. He was very steady in midfield, though he still remains on the fringe of Jurgen Klinsmann's national team. Stats: Jupiler League: 36 games, 4 goals; Europa League: 10 games, 1 goal.HERCULEZ GOMEZ (Estudiantes Tecos/Santos). It was a hot and cold season for Gomez, who began the Mexican campaign at lowly Estudiantes Tecos and moved to Santos in January. When he was inserted into the starting lineup at Santos, he scored 10 goals in seven games. But as the season progressed, he saw less and less playing time. He played only 77 minutes in three games during Santos' playoff run to the Torneo Clausura title. Stats: Torneo Apertura: 16 games, 7 goals. Torneo Clausura: 12 games, 5 goals, Concacaf Champions League: 6 goals, 6 games.JOZY ALTIDORE (AZ). After struggling in Spain, England and Turkey, Altidore enjoyed a breakout season at AZ, leading the club in scoring as it challenged for the Dutch league title. It took some time, but Altidore finally won the confidence of Coach Gertjan Verbeek in the second half of the season and was AZ's main man, scoring five goals in five games in April. Stats: Eredivisie: 34 games, 15 goals; Europa League: 14 games, 4 goals.CLINT DEMPSEY (Fulham). They say Americans don't get any respect in England, but Dempsey finished fourth in the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award voting. Dempsey had a career season, scoring 17 goals for Fulham, the most ever by an American in the EPL. He finished with 23 goals in all competitions. Stats: EPL: 37 games, 17 goals; Europa League: 7 games, 3 goals.Honorable Mention: Tim Howard (Everton), Edgar Castillo (Club America/Tijuana), Jose Torres (Pachuca), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Maurice Edu (Rangers)

US players will have last names on backs of jerseys for 1st time under Klinsmann. Numbers for upcoming games will be tournament-style, 1-23.

I think these may be the new uni's we see on Saturday night if memory serves.

Like most leagues MLS has had its share of poor referring decisions. Last nights blown call in the Chicago game is getting a lot of twitter action.

The picture shows how far Pappa was in the penalty area before the PK was taken. Pappa scored on the rebound after the pk was saved. Here is a pic and then a link to it in real time.

But I have also read that there was also a Dallas player in the box prior to the kick. It wasn't as blatant as Pappa but technically if that was the case, there would have been a re-kick taken from the penalty spot.I don't have any picture evidence but I read it from a reliable twitter source last night (can't remember exactly who it was though).

Found it. (FF to 0:48)Look at Matt Hedges of Dallas on the opposite side from Pappa. He is in the box at the time of the kick also. And then he proceeds to be the biggest complainer after the goal is scored.

technically, even with both players in the box, the kick should be retaken. It is funny that he was the biggest complainer :)

I will be very disappointed if Boyd doesn't make it...we need to be cultivating upside, not cutting it.The exact same reason why Adu should be on the squad.

Is anyone following the strange off the field stuff going on with the US Open Cup?

They had the draw for the third round (the first round that MLS teams come into) and everyone found out their matchups and where the tie would be played.

Seattle and RSL basically flat out paid their opponents a fee ($150k in Seattles case), to move the game to their own field.

I don't blame RSL or Seattle, since they are not breaking any rules but this seems to be a very short sited rule for US Soccer to allow. The Atlanta fans (the team Seattle paid) are basically going crazy.

Very strange.

Here is the final roster for the 5 games

U.S. TRAVEL ROSTER BY POSITION

GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (7): Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Sporting Lisbon), Michael Parkhurst (Nordsjaelland)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Joe Corona* (Club Tijuana), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson* (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Jose Torres (Pachuca)

FORWARDS (6): Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd* (Borussia Dortmund), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Santos), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

=============================================

* I believe are players who are not cap tied to the US. If the US can get a large lead against Antigua, hopefully both Corona and Boyd can get a few minutes to end any speculation in the future. I am expecting Fabian will get decent minutes in both matches.

Ok, so lets see your preferred lineups. I still have no idea whether to expect a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2. We may see both in the three friendlies.

The US Scotland game is already at 36k tickets sold. With a decent walk up crowd they could break 40k which destroys the old USMNT attendance record in the state of Florida which was 31k.

Can't wait for Saturday night. US Scotland game followed immediately by the main card of UFC 146.

Meh. Close call.
:lmao: :lmao:

This is my best guess as to what the team might look like against Scotland

.....................Howard

Cher.........Gooch.........Boca.........Castillo

...................Bradley...........Jones

........Donovan...............................Johnson

...........................Dempsey

.................................................Jozy

Although in the back of my mind I also have a feeling Torres may start as well, in place of either Johnson or Donovan.

One thing I really like about having Gomez on the team is that a nice chunk of his goals at club level have come as a second half sub.

He can play two positions as a striker or a right half and having someone with goal scoring confidence as a sub off the bench is a luxury the US has never really had.
