Interesting about Adam. They were wanting to palm him off on Fulham as part of the Dempsey deal. Does this mean Dempsey to Liverpool is a no-go?Also, real nice with Cole. Tweaks a hammy yesterday, told to pack his bags today.

Anyone catch the DFB Pokal?

Hoffenheim gets upset by Berlin AK (3rd league) 4:0
This seems to happen in Germany more than other leagues. I bet this was not their first team. None of the Americans played (Gyau, Johnson or Williams) I see.
Also Sunday, American forward Matt Taylor scored a hat trick and set up another goal in the German Cup on Sunday as third division Preussen Muenster beat Werder Bremen 4-2 in extra time.

why does that name sound familiar? I seem to remember a Matt Taylor kicking around MLS a while back............let me look this up quickly...Yup, that was him. Played on KC and Chivas before dropping down a division and then eventually going over seas.God bless these type players. They never let the dream die. Look at his resume2003 Orange County Blue Star 2004 Kansas City Wizards 2005–2007 Chivas USA 2007 Portland Timbers 2008 Hollywood United 2008–2009 TuS Koblenz 2009–2010 FSV Frankfurt 2010–2011 Rot Weiss Ahlen 2011–2012 SC Paderborn2012– Preußen Münster

I wonder if 3rd div is like it was in our day, Andy... I had a bunch of peers go over- mostly to Germany- and kick around for a year or two. The team would fly them in and set them up with a job over there as the pay from the team wasn't enough to sustain them.

Here are Jozy's goals today... not sure how long it will stay up.
sweet! thanks for the link.Loved the selfishness of the second one. He needs to be more selfish when he plays for the US.

This is going to be fun. Boyd, Herc, Jozy and Wondo all are going to have a chance to lead their respective leagues in scoring this year.
Yeah- liked that he kept the ball on the second one. it was the right call, anyways- the other forward made a nice run and drew his defenders with him, opening space for Jozy in the middle.I really liked that burst he gave on the first. passed the ball off, started his run to the far post and then switched gears which put him there ahead of the defender.

last game we got to see the strength, holding off defenders. this time a little pace... looking good so far.
How is he not getting serious looks from the top leagues? Every time I look up he he is scoring these days.

How do you know he's not getting a serious look from top leagues? He got to play in Spain... a top league. He had a decent end to last season, IIRC. And now he's starting this one well. He's also in CL and getting regular playing time against good competition, so can't really complain with where he is right now.

He's had some really uneventful seasons since coming over to Europe and teams from "top leagues" are going to look at that too. If he plays consistently well and keeps putting goals in, teams will come. If he keeps it up until Jan, I'd see somebody coming in for him in that transfer window.

He will. This season's only two games old. Last year he had 15 goals in the Eredivisie... a solid season, but nothing that would suggest he's too good for where he's at.If he keeps playing this well he'll probably move to a bigger club in January or at the end of the season.

Bayern play Jahn Regensburg in a DFB Pokal match tomorrow and it will be carried on espn3.

Tomorrow Gol TV starts showing their 2012-13 Bundesliga Preview show and the season starts on Friday with Champions Dortmund playing Werder Bremen. The rest of the league plays on Saturday and Sunday.

:excited:

I don't disagree it's a good spot, but I wonder if it's time to move back up with the big boys and take his game to the next level. It would also be nice to see his games.

He's only been in this spot for less than a year. Let him play and get another season under his belt. What's the hurry?ESPN Deportes has been playing Eredivisie games FWIW.

:goodposting: And it isn't like he is playing in Cyprus or the MLS. Division 1 Holland and qualified for Champions League ain't too shaby

14.41 BST: The Italian media are offering conflicting reports as to whether Daniele De Rossi and Roma are willing to accept Manchester City’s £35m offer for the midfielder with leading newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport claiming Roberto Mancini has personally spoken to the player in order to convince him to make the switch to Eastlands.
This would be great for Bradley

Re: Altidore... the transfer window is actually open for a few more days, no? Theoretically, someone could swoop in tomorrow -- yes?
Theoretically, yes.Highly unlikely since AZ has him under contract until 2015. They'd have to be blown away by an offer and/or Jozy would have to say he wants out for it to happen this fast. Also, AZ is in the Europa League this season, not the CL.

Oh- I guess I remembered wrong. Thought they were in the qualifiers for CL.Maybe AZ should swoop in and take Dempsey- he wants to play in Europe after all.

Madrid draws in their opener at home 1-1 to Valencia :pickle:
Too bad Barça thumped Real Sociedad...My boys kick off soon against Levante. Not too many changes from their Europa championship team last year. I think there's slightly less talent with the departure of Diego, but they are a top 4 la liga side with what they have. Sevilla and Valencia will rival, and maybe a resurgent Betis can make some noise.

Unfortunately I won't be able to see the game due to being in LA right now.
 It's the 30th min right now. You just get back from a trip in your Delorian? Or did you swipe that book from McFly? Biff?

There was a great story in France last year when Quevilly - a mid-table 3rd division (semi-pro) club - made it all the way to the Coupe de France final, losing to Lyon 1-0.

Wow, City can attack it....but I thought (like everyone else) that Southampton was pretty good.

Hope Aguero is ok

Defense is atrocious out there.

Watched the 2nd half of the RBNY v Portland game last night.

SO there's that.

Cahill so far does not fit in. And they have no defense. But at least they brought in what sounds like yet another attacking MF option from England (Lloyd Sam) to float aimlessly around with the others.

Honestly- every time I see them play, I get more frustrated. Absolutely no shape/cohesion as a team whatsoever going forwrad or getting back. Huge gaps all over the field.

Backe... time to #### or get off the pot. If they can't win something- anything- this year, he's got to go.

I did not see the game just the highlights. Nice come back 3-2 win for them after being down 2-0, but why they were down 2-0 to the worst team in the league at home is probably an issue. I still can't figure out Cahill's goal that tied it at 2. There was a very clear whistle from ref before he struck it.

Busy weekend, I missed all EPL games except the Arsenal game, so I can't comment on anything. But here's my thoughts on Arsenal:

- they looked pretty out of synch offensively. Podolski doesn't really seem like a lone striker to me; it almost looked like they wanted to use him like they did RvP last year and it looked awkward. I've got faith that he'll settle in and play well though.

- Cazorla looks like one hell of a player. I don't know if I've ever seen him play for anyone except the Spanish national team, maybe a Villarreal game once or twice, but he really stood out to me on Saturday - whereas for Spain he'd be overshadowed by the rest of their talent.

- I really hope it clicks for Gervinho this year. I think someone else commented on it, but he did seem to have Arshavin syndrome a little bit, where he'd beat a player 1v1, bury his head, and not make anything of it.

- The loss of Song's creative presence was evident, IMO. Walcott didn't see much action and Gervinho had his moments but lacked that final ball. Arteta can create but I think he needs to be a bit more advanced to do so - I thought they had him lying fairly deep, which was fine because he's a solid all-around midfielder, but it takes away the chance-creation that he excelled at with Everton earlier in his career.

- I thought the rest of the MF/wingers were adequate. Arteta was quiet but solid. Diaby was fine but is definitely not a replacement for Song. Walcott was just ok.

- Per Mertesacker sucks

- Carl Jenkinson appears to have been working on his crosses, but still looks really out of place out there. He probably shouldn't be playing for Arsenal.

- As critical as I am of the defense, they didn't really give Sunderland much to work with. There was that clear chance early on where Richardson played McClean through and Szczesny was forced to make a nice save, but other than that the defense did ok - surprising considering Mertesacker and Jenkinson are slow and Sunderland was playing for the counter all day.

New UEFA League rankings were out a couple of week ago.

* Spain and England flopped in the 1/2 spots ( Spain now #1)

* Rest of top 6 unchanged ( Germany, Italy, Portugal, France)

* After spending a ton of money in recent years, Russia dropped 2 spots to 9th

* Biggest movers were Belarus up 4 to 19th

* Cyprus continues to climb up the rankings moving up 3 all the way to 13th now and picked up an additional CL spot

* Not hard to guess the biggest drop, as poor Scotland plummeted 10 spots, down to 28th

New team rankings are as follows

* Top 10: Barca, Bayern, Man U, Chelsea, RM, Arsenal, Inter, AM, Porto and Valencia

* Biggest move in top 25 was Ajax climbing 10 spots (into 25th), and Man City climbing 8 spots into 20th

* Liverpool had the biggest drop in the top 25 down 6, to 17th.

Other than Cazorla, who looked great, the most interesting take away from this game for me was realizing that Sunderland's shirt sponsor this season is the non-profit group, "Invest in Africa".

Did you guys see that there is a new rule in the EPL this year? I think Ian Darke mentioned it quickly during the Arsenal game.

I believe for the first time ever in England, every single team in the EPL must use the same field dimensions, although I am unsure what the exact size is.

Llorente seems like he'd be a good fit for them.

Ted, did you watch this?

========================

With about five minutes remaining and the teams level at 1-1, Philadelphia’s Roger Torres fouled Chris Pontius to give D.C. United a potential go-ahead penalty kick. That was interesting on its own, because the recently injured Torres had just entered the match, without much time on the field lately. Sure enough, he looked sluggish, and his late tackle on Pontius was more evidence of it.

Dwayne De Rosario kissed the ball and set it on the 12-yard spot, still looking for landmark goal No. 100. He has been stuck frustratingly on 98 goals since May 19. Yes, May 19. So it was a big moment for a bunch of reasons – not the least of which could be seen in the standings. United, beginning the day in 6th place in a race where only five spots pay, needs every possible point. So …

De Rosario nailed the spot shot. But wait! …Referee Mark Geiger ordered a re-kick for encroachment; United striker Hamdi Salahi was the guilty party, false-starting his way about two steps inside the penalty arch.

In the messy in-between of De Rosario’s efforts from the penalty spot, Branko Boskovic did something unseen by the cameras, apparently bundling over Torres or shoving him or something. So Geiger – in his 100th MLS match, interestingly – showed United’s playmaker a red card. That made it 10-on-11.

Pushing and shoving ensued.

Arlo White: “Oh, it’s all happening here at RFK Stadium!”

Boskovic had changed the game, by the way, for United upon his 61st minute entrance. His ejection probably wouldn’t have mattered much had United taken the late, 2-1 lead. But …

De Rosario’s second effort went high. Ooof! No. 100 is out there, somewhere. Right?

With a man advantage, Philly pressed for the points. On one attack United center back Emiliano Dudar was shown a straight red for a nasty tackle in a situation that didn’t call for such a nasty tackle.

Fair verdict from Geiger? Yes. A reckless lunge from behind with the studs exposed (on Antoine Hoppenot) is the textbook definition of a red card. So, now Philly was up two men now, although with only a couple of minutes remaining.

Pushing and shoving ensued. And harsh words – but between teammates! Pontius was clearly annoyed at Dudar for the boneheaded lunge.

Minutes later, as United broke on a counter, Philly defender Sheanon Williams tackled Pontius from behind. Williams appeared to get the ball on a pretty skillful tackle. Geiger didn’t see it that way, however, issuing the Philly right back a second yellow. So, it was 9 on 10.

Pushing and shoving ensued. Some arguing, too.

Williams complained vehemently of the decision (and correctly so). He might have a fine coming for not leaving the field in a timely manner. Meanwhile, somehow, United goalkeeper Bill Hamid decided it was a good idea to roam well out of goal to get involved. He was shown a yellow card for this idea.

Arlo White: “It will be dark at RFK before this game is done.”

Final whistle. Mercifully so for the NBC team of White and Kyle Martino, who deserve combat pay for trying to untangle this one. Truly, there was no time to ‘splain, only time to sum up.

More pushing and shoving ensued – this time between teammates! United’s Chris Korb and Brandon McDonald had to be separated as they left the field. Manager Ben Olsen needs to be sure to sort that out.

Final totals: 2 goals, 7 yellows, 3 reds

About Geiger’s performance: The re-kick was probably unnecessary, although not an egregiously poor decision. Salihi, a DP bust at RFK, managed to find a way to take two points off the board by scooting in too early. With De Rosario at the penalty kick spot, that’s just not something that needed to be done. No, that’s not a decision we see very often, but that’s beside the point. Salihi simply did not need to be in early.

This seems unpossible for a fan of Atleti. I hope a defection isn't in the offing soon.

I didn't see the first half or the highlights, so I don't know abuot the goal or how they conceded twice. I do know- they should have given up 3 or 4 more at least, if not for the life-saving play of their GK, Gaudet. He was set upon, 1 on 1 3 times in the course of about 10 minutes as Portland simply went right through the middle of the "defense". Again- spacing/shape was horrific, starting in the MF.

Marquez is a ####, and clearly didn't care too much about playing seriously in NYC- but he kept the shape of the team pretty well organized defensively through the middle. This was just ragged.

I noticed that too and was pretty amazed by it.I actually like that teams have different dimensions and ratios to their fields. I understand the arguments for and against, but I wonder where this move came from?

I laughed when Evra went to get the ball and was pegged by a fan with it not once but twice. Couldn't have happened to a nicer fella.
