Cool, thanks for the answers

I've really enjoyed getting into and following soccer far more than I ever have before aside from the major tournaments like World Cup.

What's bigger for these club teams?Their respective league games or the UEFA championship games?
Overall, the Champions League is a more significant title to win than even the top domestic leagues. But in the group stage, a lot of the biggest clubs are confident they can advance without playing their strongest lineup every game.So right now I'd say league games are the priority. But once we get to the knockout stages, it's on. :boxing:
APOEL Nicosia earned around €15M for making it into the round of 16 last year. There's no way they can make that kind of money in the Cypriot First Division.

True. For the small leagues it's different. UEFA money can be life-changing for them.

Yeah, I agree. Look at Parkhurst's team Nordsjælland. They may arguably be the smallest club ever in the group stage. Their stadium only has 9800 seats with some standing room to get them a bit over 10k. Any money they make from the Champions League has to be huge for that side.

The Only One punished Ozil for his poor play by having him train with the subs this week. I think we're going to see Ronaldo, Modric, and Di Maria in the midfield tomorrow, with Higuain up top.

Jozy Altidore with a hat trick today in AZ's 4-0 win. 7 goals in his opening 4 games this season.
Too bad he's not good enough to consistently start for the United States.
I wonder if it's a personal thing between him and JK...it doesn't add up.
Read some of the other posts about this - i think it makes a lot of sense. In a nutshell, the US does not play a style (nor does it have the players) that suits Altidore the way his club team does. His play at AZ demonstrates a level of creativity and trust with the players who play off of him. A lot of give-and-go and passes/runs into space. I don't think the US has the same level of imagination

I really disagree with this. That's exactly what Dempsey and Donovan do bring to the table IMO. Quick movement, good interplay and quick reading of the space. In fact Dempsey and Altidore combined for exactly this sort of goal vs Italy (I think it was Italy).I'd love to see us try a 4-3-2-1 with JKs favored trio of holding/def mids behind Dempsey and Donovan playing off Altidore.

One thing to note about Jozy is you have to also take the league itself into account when looking at the variables.

The Eredivisie is almost always the highest or second highest scoring league among the majors in Europe.

I don't think it is any coicendence that Bradley also scored a ton when in Holland, scoring 16 one season in league play while playing a central midfield role for Heerenveen. Those 16 goals he scored that one season are more than the rest of his seasons going all the way back to MLS, combined.

The combination of an attack minded league, filled with skilled players with a large gap between the upper 6 and the rest of the league is a recipe for lots of goals.

Disagree, obviously, based on my previous post that layed out what Sinn is saying.Have you watched AZ play, Wd? Yes, LD and Dempsey are capable of the movement and passing that the AZ MFs provide, but not as frequently and certainly not with the same ability to spring Jozy- based on what I've seen of AZ (3 full games this season, where I'm just watching Jozy's play more than anything else) and the US.

Jozy does seem to do better with the US when he's getting quick feeds and the runners are closer to him... which tells me it's a spacing/shape issue as much as anything else. For AZ, he's been a part of that tight give-and-go, but he's also scoring when the MFs find him deep in space and make the run in support to receive the ball- at this point Jozy turns quickly and bursts into space to receive the first touch pass back from the MF. That's the type of play I'm not seeing for the US.

Now- as andy points out, this might have as much to do with somewhat more lax defending in Holland as it does with what the various players are capable of- fair point. From what I've seen, Jozy's not finding that same space to receive the ball for the US (Herc has been gobbling up the space and runs, IMO), and he's not finding the space on the 2nd ball either- again, a 2nd forward is taking up the space, and also the US MFs don't seem committed to putting the ball there either.

Two Americans with UCL games today, both away.

Jones will try on some Greek yellow cards today when Schalke visits Olympiakos and Sacha has a tough game at AC Milan with Anderlecht.

Shame that every game is on at the same time.

Seems as good a time as ever to play Milan- they're struggling a bit in league play.

I am going to check in on this game. Anderlecht has never won a game in Italy in 15 tries.

I do think that Dempsey and, especially, Donovan are capable of that kind of play but maybe you all are right that the quality is too simple against int'l defenders. Will be interesting to see how Jozy's career plays out from here. There's certainly nothing wrong with his finishing.

Hanging on for dear life for a point...

Although Yaya has made two unbelievable runs from his own third and just picked the wrong pass both times.

From the stat-tracker on ESPN, looks like Anderlecht is giving as good as it's getting. Pretty even at the San Siro, 0-0 in the 60th.

Still 30 minutes for De Jong to break Sascha's leg.
