Has anyone caught the commercial on BeIN where they play up the sexiness of soccer players, replete with slow-mo shots of David Villa, etc. and sensual music? I'm not making this up. :lmao:

The one that was apparently better than Jozy's.
Haven't seen it linked yet, but it's a long ball into his path from about 4 o'clock behind him as Ba makes a run. He lets the ball go past about hip high then volleys it past the keeper a step or two inside the box.

Six matches into the Bundesliga season, and Bayern is looking pretty solid:

Code:
FC Bayern 6-0-0 18	19:2Frankfurt 5-1-0 16	16:8Dortmund 3-2-1 11	16:8Schalke 3-2-1 11	12:7Top scorers:6 goals Mandzukic (Bayern)4 goals Müller (Bayern), Reus (Dortmund), Meier	(E Frankfurt), Schahin	(Düsseldorf)3 goals 12 players

Between Huges' smugness and the huge amount of money wasted spent, it amuses me to see QPR losing. Continually.
Tony Fernandes is rich but not Abramovich or Mansour rich. QPR spent on older players with high wages and very limited sell-on value. With the new TV money coming in starting next year, there's huge pressure to stay up this year in particular. If they drop, QPR will be more screwed than most.

That was some crazy stuff by Henry.

And that goal by Jozy... wow. Just wow.
I'm trying to recall a better goal by an American. Dempsey's volley in the CL vs Juve is up there, but it's more of a pure strike and based on the situation. What goals are my aging brain forgetting?
Are you talking about the chip? I think that was the Europa League, and I'm also not convinved that it was intentional. I think Jozy's was way better.
I still don't believe Dempsey tried to score there- really looked like he was knocking the ball to the far post to a dangerous area and got lucky.

That Ba goal was insane. Way more of once in a lifetime goal than Jozy's... which was still a great goal. Ball is hit over Ba's head on a breakaway and he hits it on a full volley with it dropping over his shoulder in front of him. Haven't seen many, if any goals like that-brilliantly struck (and was it him or Cisse last season that had that crazy volley from a crazy angle from a crazy distance?)

Geez... my brain is aging. For some reason I recalled it as a volley straight off the pass. Still a nice goal though.
Best goal I can think of is Benny's Gold Cup winner vs Mexico. But Jozy's is pretty damn classy.

Dempsey's good. Dempsey's cocky. But he's not that good or cocky.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DHUE8J423sI could so do that :coffee:Edit: You need to see the slo-mo replay to really appreciate how incredible that goal is.
Wtf

Great goal from Ba!I am 99% sure it was Papiss Cisse that scored the goal you are talking about in the last sentence. The one that was volleyed from the edge of the left box all the the way to the upper side netting of the far post, in slow motion at an impossible angle, arced over the entire box? Never seen one like that before.Yeah, this one is still nuts. Papiss and Ba! Great entertainment.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU9bjNvPCVg

It was against Cech and Chelski as I recall. Petr Cech was like, "did that really just happen?"

Cisse nearly had goal of the year wrapped up early last week in a league cup game against ManU - - took a flick-on header at the top of the box with his back to the goal, tightly bracketed by two defenders, chested it then did a self volley off his knee and a back-flip bicycle that hit the crossbar.

If it had been a front-flip bike it wouldnt have mattered if it hit woodwork.

There aren't many goals that are completely unique, but I don't recall ever seeing one like Cisse's. Defnitely one of my all-time favorites.

Definitely. That was an Al Michaels "he did WHAT?! " moment.Im still partial to Van Bastens Euro volley.

Aron Johannsson has scored 11 goals in 11 games in Denmark's Superliga this season.

Johannson was born in Alabama and moved to Iceland at 3, but then came back to US to play at the IMG academy.

He is 21 years old.

He has represented Iceland at the U21 level but recently said if Klinsmann called him in it would be tough to turn down. He would have to apply for a one time switch.

However Iceland have qualifiers coming up soon. If he is capped in any of those games, he is tied to them.

Media in Iceland has said that Klinsmann has contacted him.

Better video of Ba goal

Seattle has pre sold over 66,000 tickets to the Portland game this weekend.

This will be their highest MLS attendance ever and very likely to be the second highest attended MLS regular season (non double header) ever.

Their final season average of over 43,000 is again the highest ever. 4th straight year they have broken the MLS attendance record. See below

2009: 30,897

2010: 36,173

2011: 38,496

2012: 43,725 (might go a touch higher based on last game which still may sell a few more).

I believe only one professional soccer team in US club history averaged more fans in a season and that was the Cosmos who did it twice in 1978 and 1979 with averages of 47,856 and 46,690.

That's phenomenal -- in line with Man City (46k), Liverpool (45k) and Chelsea (41k).
When you consider they have done it with out any "name" players and with out winning a single playoff game yet, it is even more impressive.Hopefully that lack of playoff wins will change this year. It would be a shame to see such solid support dwindle like what is happening in Toronto where the once very solid fan base appears to have given up after years of incompetence.

Oh, I wouldn't go that far about Anzhi. They're still in Russia after all.

Best move Russia made was changing their season's schedule. But, that being said, wth wants to play in winter in Russia? Some of that travel is pretty brutal also. Russian teams are going to need made pay a premium for higher caliber players - I think you'll see a lot of guys go there when they are past their prime or brutally over paid. I don't think Anzhi is much a threat outside of Russia - and even in Russia, there are 3-4 decent teams.

I meant unbeatable in Russia. The Russian league only gets 1 automatic CL spot right now and Anzhi could lock it down. Obviously they're not going to overthrow the likes of Barca or Man U anytime soon.

I wouldn't bet on the Russians, but if the Euro unravels (or the cost of keeping it together impoverishes Europe) and the price of oil is at $200/barrel I can absolutely see Russian teams entering the conversation as top end elite clubs in the next 5-10 years. Not likely, but certainly possible. Ditto Brazil for that matter. All that would take is for it to make more sense for Brazilians to stay at home than go abroad.

So much for that "neutral" stadium.

By The Associated Press

The 2014 World Cup CONCACAF qualifier between Guyana and Mexico will be played Oct. 12 in Phoenix, Arizona, the Mexico Football Federation said Tuesday.

The match was originally scheduled to be played in Georgetown, but Guyana requested it be moved to a neutral stadium. The match will be played at the University of Phoenix.

With four matches played, Mexico leads the Group 2 standings with 12 points, followed by El Salvador with five, Costa Rica with four and Guyana with one.

I'm kind of loving the front page on ESPNFC. I choose to interpret it as Rooney giving Rio the piss over his performance against Spurs and Rio threatening to unleash some devastating Twitter comments.

This van Persie feller has a knack for the net
Gotta admit, as an Arsenal fan, I was philosphical about RVP leaving, but it's hard not to fantasize about how tasty a healthy and in form Van Persie would have been with Podolski and Cazorla in the team.I was also one of those who thought that Rooney and RVP would get in each other's way, but Rooney can really play anywhere up top or in midfield (the only question is whether he's willing to). I kind of think that United should just play him at CM as he's the only guy who has the passing and the workrate.

It makes a lot of sense.
