Lots of good action in the capital One (Carling) cup yesterday and today. Tons of scoring and action for those with BeIn channel. Bad news for Dempsey - missed a penner and Spurs eliminated by Norwich City.
Dempsey hasn't played well all season. He's probably going to struggle to get starts.

Chelsea seems like they're really trying to win everything. #1 goalie in a Capital Cup game?
I have to think some of that was a reaction to Saturday's gameGiven the controversy and subsequent loss, I'm sure Chelsea's powers that be had no interest in losing twice in a week to Man UHad it been Reading or someone, I am not sure they would have played the same lineup
Chelsea started most of their available first team regulars. They subbed in Hazard, Ramires and Oscar.United didn't even dress most of their first team and subbed in Powell, Tunnicliffe and Macheda :mellow:And Chelsea still needed two dives in the box to draw pk's to force ET at home.Good for those cheaters. Hard for me to despise a team as much as I can't stand Chelsea. Hope they enjoy the Capital One cup, only thing they'll win this year.

OK so we have LA hosting Vancouver tonight and many eyes will be on Landon.

* He again gave an interview in which his motives for continuing after this season are being pondered.

* I still put the chance of him out right retiring after this season (which could be tonight) at a very low %

* I do however very much believe him that he wants and needs an extended break. He is a very old 30 year old with the non stop playing he has done for club(s) and country over the years.

* If LA does lose tonight, he will have that extended break he wants. If he decides to not be available for selection for the mini January camp (if they even have one) or the February WCQier, then it will be almost 4 months he could have off if he wanted, likely the largest amount of time he has had away from the sport since he was 16 years old before he entered Bradenton.

* If LA goes on a winning a streak and they play all the way through the MLS Cup, I have no idea what will happen. If he is exhausted now mentally and physically, I can't imagine what his mind set is going to be in early December.

What's most striking about the new interview is that he seems to acknowledge that he thinks he's pissing off Klinsmann and other members of the MNT. I think the Nats have to move forward assuming Donovan won't be there. I'd say that he's earned the right to show up for the qualifiers he wants to play, but this is a team that still hasn't figured out how it wants to play.

For a guy who has pretty much avoided the media through out his career unless he was forced to, he seems to be going out of his way to explain his feelings and actions.Landon has not been available a ton for the US recently so in a way they have already been forced to play with out him quite often. The ironic thing about all of this is that when he has been healthy this year, he has played extremely well, so its not like he is seeing his skills erode tremendously and thinks that it is time.

Lol @ "cheaters" and the old "we didn't want to win anyway" joke. Giggs, Fletcher, Nani, Chicharito, Anderson, Rafael, Welbeck are all from United's youth squad and had no chance playing against guys like 18 yr old Lucas Piazon and several others getting their first ever senior team start for Chelsea.

Fun game between LA and Vancouver last night.

Jay Demeritt had such a solid year and I still think he could have helped the US when searching for CB's this summer. The injury last night must have killed him. One minute after getting subbed, the guy who replaced him gave up the winning pk that Landon scored.

This now sets up one of the few real feuds in MLS between SJ and LA, starting on Sunday.

Tonight though will be the first game in what should be an excellent series between RSL and Seattle on NBCSN. The big talking point here is Seattle has never won a playoff series. They also have not scored against RSL in 3 games this season and Eddie Johnson is being listed as questionable. That means Sammy Ochoa might have to put down the Big Mac and get his big butt on the field for an important game.

Also off the field, Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer's fate is being decided by votes from the core fan base as to whether he will keep his job or not.

I love Drew Carey's crazy ideas. He should have just decided it by playing Plinko.

The "Clattenburg: Referee, Leader, Legend" banner is kind of awesome. I'd like to think that even Cletius would giggle at that.
I definitely give props to those fans for their cleverness and huge balls. JT seems an easy target these days, but I'm sure that banner raised the blood pressure in more than a few Chelsea fans at the Bridge yesterday.

It will be interesting to see what the fans vote. Off the field, the guy could not have done better, obviously. On the field they do have three US Open Cup Championships but the lack of a playoff win is hanging over the club like a dark cloud.

Interview with Klinsmann giving his thoughts on Landon, the Russia game, The January Camp, MLS, Chandler etc.

[ON THE RECORD] On Wednesday, the Concacaf will conduct the draw that will determine the schedule for next year's Hexagonal, which begins Feb. 6. Between now and then, U.S. national team Jurgen Klinsmann hopes to confirm the availability (or unavailability) of several key players, including veteran Landon Donovan and young German-American Timmy Chandler, who has yet to commit his international future to the USA. Klinsmann talked with the media about their situations, what he has seen in MLS this season and plans for the Nov. 14 friendly against Russia and the weeks leading up to the Hexagonal opener ...

LANDON DONOVAN. Donovan has been frank about his reticence about continuing his soccer career, and Klinsmann says he finds it "very courageous of him to talk openly about what is going through his mind."

"I can understand all those thoughts," Klinsmann added, "so I just try to pick him up every time a game comes a long and the way that I try to understand his personal situation, which I do with every player out there because every player is a special individual person, so I try to adjust and understand everybody’s individual needs and issues."

Klinsmann said what Donovan "wants to do and whatever he decides to do will be very respected by us," and he hopes that will make it easier for Donovan to give him an answer.

In the meantime, Klinsmann expects Donovan to be part of the national team for the Hexagonal in 2013. but he says the team will adjust if Donovan isn't available.

RUSSIA GAME. A win in the final U.S. match of the year against Russia in the southern city of Krasnodar will assure the USA of the best record in a single year (10-2-2), though Klinsmann prefers to look at the game as "another learning opportunity against one of the best teams in Europe at the moment."

The game means, according to Klinsmann,"all our European players don’t have to fly back again after recently being in the World Cup qualifiers. The distances will be shorter for those players. If we see that there is an opportunity to break in another player or invite somebody that wasn’t part of the roster yet, we might do that."

The game will come up between MLS conference finals, so few MLS players will be in the squad.

JANUARY CAMP. Traditionally, January has meant a long U.S. training camp for mostly MLS and Scandinavian-based players with one or two friendlies. With the first Hexagonal match on Feb. 6 and most of his key players based abroad, Klinsmann hasn't decided what to do.

“We are right now discussing the entire approach for January," he said. "It’s a bit tricky because we don’t have the schedule yet. We want to wait until next week when we finally have the schedule for the qualifiers, to see whether it starts with a home game on Feb. 6 or there’s an away game. I’m in touch with quite a lot of coaches from Major League Soccer about the topic of a January camp that was traditionally set up."

U.S. BACKLINE. The biggest question mark in the U.S. lineup may be the U.S. central defense, which will be severely tested in the Hexagonal, but Klinsmann is "comfortable" with his options.

"I think we saw a very impressive year by Geoff Cameron, not only with Houston Dynamo and now with Stoke, but also in our environment," said Klinsmann. "He kind of fought his way into that team and now he seems to be set in the center back role. We obviously still have Oguchi Onyewu, who played his first game for Malaga, 90 minutes, in the loop. Carlos [bocanegra] as the captain is always giving you all the experience he has and Clarence Goodson is there as well. I mentioned it a few times that I see Maurice Edu as a possible center back going forward. He played a good game in Mexico, where we won. It’s going OK. There are still some other players in the loop as well coming through MLS, like an Omar Gonzalez or a Matt Besler, or if it’s a Tim Ream that plays with Bolton Wanderers."

TIMMY CHANDLER. Klinsmann said he remains in contact with Chandler even though the German-American has yet to commit to the USA.

"I always told him to take it at his pace," Klinsmann said. "It’s similar to Landon. They have to make their own decisions sooner or later and they will do that. Timmy knows that. He is going through learning years in the Bundesliga. I’m in touch with his coach as well. He is maturing. He is getting more experience and he’s getting more focused. We are in touch and we respect his decision so far that he was not part of the qualifiers, but the World Cup is coming along pretty soon. We’re already going into 2013, so it’s totally up to him how fast the decision on his end will be made.”

MLS. While only a half dozen MLS players are currently in the national team picture, Klinsmann had praise for MLS.

“I think MLS deserves a huge, huge compliment," he said. "I think it has been very competitive and also high quality season. I think you see teams that really try to play the game the right way, playing out of the back, keeping the ball on the ground, playing one-two touches, nice combinations and teams playing high-pressured games. There’s a lot of energy there. I think the crowds in the stadiums have been tremendous, so I think it’s been a successful MLS season."

The 2012 season has seen Cameron (since sold by Houston to Stoke City) and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi break into the national team, and Klinsmann said his staff is looking for other MLS players to break through.

"Our coaching staff is looking all over the place to find players that break through, players that take more leadership roles in their clubs, players that can get ready for the senior national team level," he said. "We have an eye on them. Giving you names would not be the right thing because we don’t even know if they would be available for the Russia game. They’re in their playoffs and they are very focused on their teams at the moment.”

very awesome
Let's not get carried away now. "Kind of" awesome is sufficient imo. Btw, I think the arrival of Leo Messi's son (Thiago) gives us all a good excuse to Google image search Antonella Roccuzzo at work today.

Espn did a big feature on messi and his hometown a while back (wanna say it was late september)

cliff notes: messi is strange, might be mildly mentally challenged and nobody in his home town likes him because they think he bailed on them.

Near the end of the article, it makes it sound like things have warmed up between him and the town.

I have a feeling he's going to practically disappear once his playing days are over.

There's a lot of funny in here, but nothing tops the absurdity of the photo of that coat that Wenger insists on wearing.

Re: Seattle vs. RSL, I swear the football sidelines stretching along the entire field inhibit wide play. It seems that I've seen a lot of guys hugging the football sideline as if they were trying to hug the real touchline without even really thinking about it. I'd love to see some kind of Zonal Marking-type analysis to see if teams play a much narrower game in Seattle as opposed to other stadiums.

This is the first time I have seen the strange partial NFL markings at a Seattle game. You could just look at the Opta heat map to check out your theory. The chalk board should be available shortly. Awesome game by Rimando. 4 straight shutouts against Seattle.

Interesting, I can't recall for sure when's the last time I saw a game played in Seattle, but I never recall seeing those lines either. I don't know for sure whether the charts would show narrower play, but I am interested in finding out.

Seattle really missed Eddie Johnson tonight, especially in the air as they pumped in 30 crosses. And the fat man and his second half replacement Estrada both missed good chances. Seattle has a tough game at Rio Rinto coming up if they want to pull out their first playoff series win.

Really looking forward to the NY DC match tomorrow night. I have no idea what the late switch will do to the crowd in DC but should be a good match. You never know when Henry is going to pull on his cape and it continues to be fun to watch Pontius take over the leadership of DC with De Rosario out.

I'm sorry as I have an obligation to hate everything EPL related... But Rooney is one of the most overrated players in recent memory.Good striker... maybe even a Very good striker. I can admit that. But the guy has so many deficiencies in his game, it's incredible... and yet he's on this golden pedistal of supposed 'greatness'.I can name 10 strikers Id rather have off the top of my head, and probably 20 if you gave me a few minutes.Good. Not great. And no, this isn't because he missed the penalty

I'd love to hear that list.

Valencia whiff. Ferdinand whiff. Rooney missing a PK. The only goal coming from a Vermaelen whiff. This is like the Keystone Cops.
