On a political note, I was not aware, just learned, that Nate Silver is behind ESPN's "SPI" ranking system for national football teams, and is apparently still tweaking the formula: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/spi/rankings?cc=5901
More proof that Silver hates America. USA is #34 vs. #27 in the FIFA rankings.

What would be outcome be if Greece played Brazil ten times?

I think it is always stipulated that you have to ignore the WC host in these FIFA rankings. With out the qualifying points, it is very difficult to stay at the very top as the formula weights qualifying points higher than friendlies.

at first blush, I thought it was clear pen.

after second viewing.....wellll

Chicharito does his best to flub away a sitter, but still puts it away for the final decision

This would be a nice boost for Scottish football if Celtic can make the QF's , after the Rangers fiasco and the poor play of the national team.

The Scottish national team is currently ranked 70th.

Oy vey the field for the Red Bulls game looks like a frozen mess, my buddy sending me pics of the field crew pushing ice around.

Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider)11/7/12, 7:26 PM#MLS Commissionr Don Garber and league president Mark Abbott have been helping shovel the field.Good lord this is going to be ugly :(

Brad Guzan was named player of the month by Villa. Great to see him holding down a starting position finally.

He turned 28 just last month and he could be the US starter for the 2018 cycle especially with Hamid and Johnson still not figuring out how to put in a constant cycle of games of "great, great, great, down right awful."

Hey MLS Front Office

MLS Cup in sunny San Jose's tiny stadium not looking so bad now huh :)

Hope the DC fans liquored up to stay warm. 11 bus loads of fans made the trip up.

Tough draw for US to start if I read the board correctly on the stream.

Away to Honduras, Home to CR and away to Mexico as first three games. Yikes.

Here is the full US schedule. If US can get out of the first 3 games with 4 points I will be very happy.

It is not hard to imagine with this schedule that US may need 6 points in last two games to be in top 3.

3 of first 4 games are away, while 4 of last 6 are at home. Going to be a long round I fear.

Feb. 6th: @ Honduras

March 22nd: vs. Costa Rica

March 26th: @ Mexico

June 7th: @ Jamaica

June 11th: vs. Panama

June 18th: vs. Honduras

Sept. 6th: @ Costa Rica

Sept. 10th: vs. Mexico

Oct. 11th: vs. Jamaica

Oct. 15th: @ Panama

Hard to say. 7/10 maybe for Brazil? Brazil is ranked lower for a reason though. They really haven't played that well in quite some time. The only teams I would put them ahead of is England and Greece, but you could also make the argument that Belgium and France should be higher.

Huh?Brazil has won their most recent 6 games in a row, including beating Argentina. The combined score of the 6 games is 24-1.

Going back a year, Brazil has won 14 out of 16 games. The only losses are against Mexico and Argentina.

The reason Brazil is ranked lower in the Fifa rankings is the FIFA formula puts a high weight on WCQiers, of which Brazil has none.

The ESPN rankings do not weight the qualifiers as much and you will see Brazil is ranked 3rd

Start and finish on the road with Mexico both early and late. Talk about getting El Shaft here. Perhaps Mexico will have qualified by the time they travel to the US?

I am more hopeful that Panama is out by the last game. We do not want to be in the position of having to get points down there if they are still alive on the last day.

Trying to find something positive to say about the first three games. The best I have is that many of Honduras's best players are in MLS and won't be in season form in February.

In their last ten they have beaten Japan, Iraq, South Africa, China, Bosnia, Gabon, Sweden, and Argentina. In that stretch they have lost to Mexico and Argentina. 1-2 against good teams doesn't scream severely underrated to me (Sweden isn't a bad team, but they also haven't played that well). I don't care if they almost put up double digits on China. The rankings are always a bit screwy, but I don't see more than a handful of teams they should be placed above. It looks like they have some decent competition coming up so maybe their ranking will rise.
