On a political note, I was not aware, just learned, that Nate Silver is behind ESPN's "SPI" ranking system for national football teams, and is apparently still tweaking the formula: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/spi/rankings?cc=5901
More proof that Silver hates America. USA is #34 vs. #27 in the FIFA rankings.
Here is the new top 20 for FIFA. 1 Spain 1564

2. Germany 1421

3 Argentina 1349

4 Portugal 1178

5 Italy 1169

6 England 1167

7 Netherlands 1128

8 Colombia 1110

9 Russia 1084

10 Croatia 1078

11 Uruguay 1047

12 Greece 1004

13 Brazil 994

14 Mexico 984

15 Côte d'Ivoire 974

16 Switzerland 966

17 Ecuador 951

18 France 938

19 Algeria 907

20 Belgium 881
What would be outcome be if Greece played Brazil ten times?
Hard to say. 7/10 maybe for Brazil? Brazil is ranked lower for a reason though. They really haven't played that well in quite some time.
Huh?Brazil has won their most recent 6 games in a row, including beating Argentina. The combined score of the 6 games is 24-1.

Going back a year, Brazil has won 14 out of 16 games. The only losses are against Mexico and Argentina.

The reason Brazil is ranked lower in the Fifa rankings is the FIFA formula puts a high weight on WCQiers, of which Brazil has none.

The ESPN rankings do not weight the qualifiers as much and you will see Brazil is ranked 3rd
In their last ten they have beaten Japan, Iraq, South Africa, China, Bosnia, Gabon, Sweden, and Argentina. In that stretch they have lost to Mexico and Argentina. 1-2 against good teams doesn't scream severely underrated to me (Sweden isn't a bad team, but they also haven't played that well). I don't care if they almost put up double digits on China. The rankings are always a bit screwy, but I don't see more than a handful of teams they should be placed above. It looks like they have some decent competition coming up so maybe their ranking will rise.
You refuse to acknowledge the formula I see. No biggie I guess but I am unsure why you are arguing the point. If you don't care about the formula then use the SPI rankings where Brazil is ranked 3rd.http://soccernet.espn.go.com/spi/rankings?cc=5901

Here is the full US schedule. If US can get out of the first 3 games with 4 points I will be very happy. It is not hard to imagine with this schedule that US may need 6 points in last two games to be in top 3. 3 of first 4 games are away, while 4 of last 6 are at home. Going to be a long round I fear. Feb. 6th: @ HondurasMarch 22nd: vs. Costa RicaMarch 26th: @ MexicoJune 7th: @ JamaicaJune 11th: vs. PanamaJune 18th: vs. HondurasSept. 6th: @ Costa RicaSept. 10th: vs. MexicoOct. 11th: vs. JamaicaOct. 15th: @ Panama
Start and finish on the road with Mexico both early and late. Talk about getting El Shaft here. Perhaps Mexico will have qualified by the time they travel to the US?
Trying to find something positive to say about the first three games. The best I have is that many of Honduras's best players are in MLS and won't be in season form in February.
It's futile to try and project form and injuries out a year from now. It's a fair format. If the US plays to their ability, they're second favorites to advance. You can't expect more than that.

The first three games are not a year out. February will be here pretty quickly.

I understand the formula. Brazil doesn't have to qualify so they aren't playing a lot of tough competition. I think there are just as far away from three as they are from thirteen though. They got to the quarterfinals in 2010 through Chile and since then, with the exception of Argentina and Mexico, they have beat up on smaller competition. It's a hard team to rank right now. I'm sure they will do well in 2014 though.

At least it won't be snowing in Tegucigalpa

It is not just the type of team, it is the form of the game that matters much more because of the large multiplier given to the formula. Qualifiers are worth 2.5 times as much as a friendly when playing the same team. This is why the WC host typically drops in the rankings during the cycle because they lose the multiplier while every other team gets them.

To give an example for Brazil, a WCQier against the worst team in South America (Bolivia) is worth almost twice as much as a friendly against the best team in the World (Spain). And now imagine the difference using an average qualifier and an average friendly.

Again, if you are interested in how the teams rank with a different formula that does not hurt the WC hosts, the SPI rankings are probably better.

Wondolowski's expected to transfer to Europe during the transfer window, yes?
I have not heard anything concrete but it does make sense. What rumors have you heard? If he is not under contract I am sure he will go on a free but if he is still under contract it becomes more tricky. The transfer fee for a 29 year old who has never played abroad might not be enough to get him as he is obviously an important marketing tool for the new stadium.

Hannover 96. Dunno if Hannovers 1 through 95 are interested.http://whatculture.com/sport/chris-wondolowski-a-guaranteed-january-transfer-target.phpI assume there's no way an MLS club can compete with what the Bundesliga can offer, salary-wise? Sucks if he leaves, but it'd be great to see him cash in.

Pretty much no they can't unless they are willing to make him a DP but even then I can't see them going more than say $600k. SJ is a small club even in MLS terms. I hope he can cash in, but it will depend on his contract status. If he is on a free he should end up somewhere in Europe on a 2-3 year deal. If not out of contract then I am not sure what will happen.

I am looking forward to seeing whom we put where. Rio Tinto might be good for the CR game. Saprissa = urine + batteries + artificial surface. What's not to like  ===================================================Ignoring the hell hole that is Saprissa for a second, would you prefer an artificial surface or the cow pasture field like in Jamaica?

Good news!

Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have both added beIN Sport in English according to Soccer America. I believe both will offer in Spanish as well.

Based on prior experience, I had Shakhtar pegged as a team that built a gaudy record against weak competition that would be exposed (once again) in Europe. But this current Shakhtar team is quality and has the inside track to win Group E, even after losing to Chelsea on a 94th minute goal last night. They are fun to watch, and I hope they advance, at Juve's expense. Group E will be decided by two massive games the last two matchdays - Chelsea at Juve on 11/20 and Juve at Shakhtar on 12/5.

Clearly in trouble after the 7-0 shellacking my Football Manager 13 Newcastle team just gave them in the Europa League.
:lol:Unfortunately it's a case of the Russian owner turning off the tap at short notice. The clubs trying to become self sufficient but can't do that overnight. We've taken our wage bill from £8.5mil to £5mil a year in just under 12 months. If we could get to 3.5 a year we'd be ok but with long contracts to be honoured and bills to be paid its difficult. :(

Watching Josh Gatt play in the Europa League right now. He has to be hoping Klinsmann did not see that last play. Let his guy wander to get a free crack from about 12 yards away which he buried. Gatt got the WTF look from team mates.

Offensively he does look good (playing right midfield today). Strong attacking mentality.

Pulling for you guys. Hearts is on my list of somewhat obscure football jerseys I occassionally ponder purchasing from the internet.

How good is the SPL tv contract? 8.5 million pounds is a pretty heavy budget for a team averaging barely 12k a year. That is less attendance than every team in MLS with a budget as high as LA's.
