Danny Williams continues to concern me.

We have seen him in a number of games now and a pattern seems to be emerging.

1) If the opponents are a low pressure team, he is very effective at the holding midfield role

2) If the opponents are high pressure, his distribution proficiency drops to an unacceptable level IMO. Today for example he was caught in possession 7 times, and had 3 other unforced errors compared to only 25 completed passes, which is not good for a holding midfielder.

What I don't get is that he is holding down a starting position at an average or worse Bundesliga team, which one would guess likely sees their fair share of pressure on the ball.

Sadly, there is not a lot of choices as neither Beckerman or Edu is going to do any better and Williams at least is going to improve at his age where Beckerman is well on the back 9. Edu is just going to turn into the rusted Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz if he does not find away to get on the field at club level.

In MLS, Ozzie Alonso from Seattle would be the obvious choice to have a shot at DM but FIFA has not yet ruled whether he can represent US.

Yikes, I stay off twitter for a day and I missed this beauty?

=============================

Doug Quinn, President and CEO of FC Dallas was arrested in NY for allegedly beating and trying to suffocate his wife during his 50th birthday party.

As many who follow MLS know that Chivas USA is arguably the weakest team (considering both on and off field performance) in the league. It has been hoped by many that Chivas would move and rebrand. Those hopes were dashed yesterday during a press conference.

After firing a ton of people in the organization, Jorge Vergara held a big press conference recently in which he laid out the following plans (note, Vergara recently purchased Chivas USA from his partner as the owner along with his wife).

*Absolutely intend to stay in LA

*Must move out of HDC as soon as they can find/build their own stadium

*Return to the original idea of having Chivas USA being heavily Hispanic

*Intends to bring in players from Chivas of Guadalajara (which he also owns).

Many of these items did not work when they were a new team, I am not sure how much better they would work today. Playing second fiddle to the Galaxy in the HDC is not the best situation, I agree. But I am not sure MLS really should have two teams in LA at this time when there are plenty of places to move the team and help expand the leagues footprint.

Just finished watching the game. I don't think the US was as bad as the announcers indicated. There were some worrying defensive collapses and the Russians could have had 1 or 2 more goals if not for Howard, but I hardly think the US got killed. Seemed to me like the US had the advantage in terms of actual control of the game for the last 60 or so minutes, whereas the Russians were content to just shut down the US attack and play for the quick counter - which nearly worked a number of times.

Howard was a bit lucky on some of those saves, IMO, but he was in the right position and that's all you can expect. I thought Jermaine Jones was tremendous today, perhaps the best game I've ever seen him play with the USMNT. Danny Williams = :X today. Am I the only one who sometimes confuses Williams and Fabian Johnson? I liked the workrate from Gatt - and most of the others out there, actually - but he didn't really do all that much, technically. I hate to say this one, but Chandler was effective; his crossing skills could be huge if he finally commits to the US. I thought Gomez had a down game compared to his recent performances.

That's all I got.

Here is the latest US U18 roster. Much of this group will make up the U20 WC side that Tab Ramos will coach. Good to see so many academy level players already. Hopefully a handful will graduate as three on this list already have.

I thought he played a good game. One thing that bothers me about him is for such a rough and tumble player, he spends so much time on the ground constantly putting the US in odd man situations because he takes forever to get himself up. As a side note, I think soccer produces so many different opinions of how a player performed from fans compared to other sports. For example you would have ranked Jones pretty high from your comments and yet most others did not think that highly of him today. http://www.americansoccernow.com/player_ratings

He is on the U17 team. They are gearing up for their WC cycle so I think he will remain with them until he finishes the full cycle. They have qualifying in April if memory serves and then if they qualify, the U17 WC is in October.

I think the low opinion of him today came from his rough touch in the final 3rd attacking. He reminded me a bit of Yaya sprinting from one end to the other before he gave the ball away numerous times. Bradley scoring, contributing to the 2nd goal, and his overall bossing of the midfield in the 2nd 45 overshadowed what really was a pretty good performance by Jones throughout the match. Like I said earlier he was the best American on the pitch in the 1st half. His impact didn't wane much in 2nd half either. But most viewers can't get over the wasted opportunities to see the overall contribution.

Is there a typo then in the list? He can't already be at Maryland University can he?

This couldn't be a bigger tangential, but the Heguita mention above reminded me of Comizzo (South American keepers with a lot of hair for $100, Alex) who played for Chile -- which reminded me of this clip.

Comizzo drops Carlos Hermosillo for a PK at 1-1 in extra time of the Mexican Winter Championship's deciding game, then axe kicks him in the head after he's on the ground.

Pretty decent for Telenovela-type drama...

ETA: skip to the 12:00 mark.

I just didn't think he played smart. I think alot of the poor shape in the final 45 was due to his poor recovery on his runs and the sloppy give aways he made. If we've got him and Bradley out there at the same time, he's got to be highly selective as to when to run forward. Personally, he's most valuable on the road in CONCACAF qualifying playing a defensive midfield and crunching people with hard tackles. He is by far our most effective player at that style of play and its something you need in some of the rougher qualifying matches.

Good evening, Pep. I am Zlatan.I don't know what time it is where you are, but I imagine you spend a lot of hours trying to sleep now that you are no longer in football and your life is meaningless. Well, did you happen to wake from your latest slumber with the jolt of a million Zlatts (Zlatan watts) of energy coursing through your body for seemingly no reason whatsoever? You should have. And it should have been more terrifying than an zombified dinosaur with Zlatan-like Taekwondo skills and more exhilarating than a kiss to the sternum from my foot. Yes, Pep, if you check the caller ID on this wake-up call, it will only read "Your daddy" and then in parentheses "Ibrahimovic, Zlatan."As everyone else is aware, I scored a typically Zlatnificent goal against England. Actually, I scored four, but the last one -- oh, the last one was just for you, Pep. Allow me to paint the picture with words in a way that will make the frescos in the Sistine Chapel crumble out of shame and because they are more than 500 years old.Joe Hart came out of the penalty area because, like you Pep, he is not as smart as me and he probably also wanted my autograph. He then headed the ball high into the Swedish night sky. But this was not a problem for me because that is where I live. I swim laps through the clouds and cook pizza with the sun. So, I chased the ball down like it was a disrespectful journalist. The gods tried to keep the ball out of my reach, Pep, but the pull of Zlatan is too strong for them! As it fell into my trap, I executed a move that instantly ruined every Olympic gymnasts' opinion of themselves and blasted the ball towards the goal, at an angle, 30 meters away, with a Zlatcycle kick so powerful that it forced your hair to fall out several years before I even did it. :lmao:One of the defenders tried to clear my latest miracle off the goal line, but he was too late. The ball was in the net, the world was at my feet and it became obvious to everyone why you felt the need to leave the sport after selling me. As I say every time I play chess, "checkmate, Pep." I am the grandmaster. I am Zlatan. Now go back to sleep. I have some smiling to do. At your expense.Ponytail whip!

:goodposting: Announcers were driving me crazy.

Briefly...

The flat-back four and the 3 CMs didn't hold their shape together well at all. So many 2nd balls won by the Russians in that space and too much room/time there as well. Seemed to me that Williams/Jones/Bradley did too much switching around and would have done better with one of them playing a more true #6 role, as Edu did when he came (and almost immediately improved the team shape, IMo- although tough to gauge against so many subs). Cameron and Goodson need time together to figure out those seams that open up too much between them when they partner. Better MF shape in front of them closing down the lanes and passers would help too.

The key Russians showed more touch and quickness of thought than the US players, and that was the difference IMO, opening up the US defense and that poor defensive shape too easily. Conversely, the US were slow making decisions too much, and when they did were often undone by a poor final touch. Oh- I thought until the subs came in, Russia's shape was top-notch... not much room for the US to play anwhere on the field.

The US did create a much better flow for themselves, and started to impose their play on the Russians as soon as they started switching the ball quicker. They helped themselves with some smart rotating runs between the MFs (need to do that AND still have a guy hold the fort in front of the back 4) that opened up the field along with the switching passes. But they really could have used the ingenuity of Dempsey up front to help unlock a disciplined Russian defensive third.

I thought Gatt was like a deer in the headlights- honestly. Quick of foot, but not of mind (yet) and his constant indecision or poor decisions stalled/ruined too many US attacks. Not impressed.

You guys covered Jones- I liked how he got forward, but too many heavy touches and too much moping around after tackles.

Jozy improved his workrate, but it's still not happening for him with the US the way it is with AZ. The service is different, as are the runs off the service. The times I've seen him play for AZ, the attack is much more direct and involves a handful of decisive passes and runs into space with few touches. It also helps that the D isn't nearly as tight. I thought Boyd did more of what Jozy needed to do- hard diagonal runs or showing runs, consistently good first touch, and putting real pressure on defenders on balls in the air. Seems like Jozy doesn't really try on those air balls. Agudelo did a nice job getting into space and running the slots between defenders- I'd love to see one of these guys partner up with Jozy and allow him to do more of what he's best at.

Overall, I thought there were enough sustained moments of quality from the US that I was happy with the performance and result. Obviously the Russians deserved more- but the US earned the draw, and for enough of the game showed that they could more than compete against one of Europe's supposed best.

MLS has released its candidates for the various awards. Soccer America took a crack at ranking them. The comeback player category is interesting as all 3 could factor in during the Hex for the US.

=================

From Soccer America

Most Valuable Player

1. Chris Wondolowski (San Jose)

2. Graham Zusi (Sporting KC)

3. Thierry Henry (New York)

Wondo and his teammates fizzled in the playoffs, yet without him they couldn’t have won the Supporters’ Shield. His record-tying season of 27 goals and all-around impressive, consistent play stood out.

Also: Robbie Keane (Los Angeles), Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle).

Rookie of the Year

1. Nick DeLeon (D.C. United)

2. Austin Berry (Chicago)

3. Darren Mattocks (Vancouver)

Rookie attackers always have it tougher, since teams tend to stock up those spots with foreign players or proven commodities. DeLeon did more than enough to win a tight battle with an outstanding defender in Berry and a streaky yet promising forward in Mattocks.

Also deserving of mention: Connor Lade (New York), Kelyn Rowe (New England).

Newcomer of the Year

1. Victor Bernardez (San Jose)

2. Michael Gspurning (Seattle)

3. Federico Higuain (Columbus)

Along with robust tacking and aerial dominance, Bernardez lashed home a pair of direct free kicks and also volleyed an impressive goal from a corner kick with his right foot. The Honduran topped a good class of newcomers.

Also: Lee Young-Pyo (Vancouver), Jairo Arrieta (Columbus).

Comeback Player of the Year

1. Eddie Johnson (Seattle)

2. Chris Pontius (D.C. United)

3. Alan Gordon (San Jose)

Johnson’s return after four years in the European wilderness looked like a crazy gamble in April; by July it was a brilliant move. His 14 goals and energetic work up front called up memories of his impressive days in Dallas and Kansas City, and earned him a return to the national team.

Also: David Ferreira (FC Dallas).

Defender of the Year

1. Matt Besler (Sporting KC)

2. Victor Bernardez (San Jose)

3. Aurelien Collin (Sporting KC)

Besler doesn’t have the physical tools of Bernardez or Collin, but is marginally more consistent and less reckless. He and Collin played as a unit frequently, yet Besler also maintained a high standard when paired with Lawrence Olum and through lineup tweaks that often shifted around the midfield pieces in front of him.

Also: Jeff Parke (Seattle), Arne Friedrich (Chicago).

Goalkeeper of the Year

1. Jimmy Nielsen (Sporting KC)

2. Michael Gspurning (Seattle)

3. Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA)

Nielsen backstopped one of the strongest defenses in MLS yet still responded when a big save was demanded. He sometimes lacks presence in the penalty area on crosses and loose balls but otherwise is top-class.

Also: Nick Rimando (RSL), Andy Gruenebaum (Columbus).

Coach of the Year

1. Frank Yallop (San Jose)

2. Ben Olsen (D.C. United)

3. Peter Vermes (Sporting KC)

Injuries ripped through the San Jose lineup last year, and in rebuilding from that disappointment San Jose hit the jackpot by also netting important cogs such as Marvin Chavez from FC Dallas, ex-Quake Shea Salinas and Bernardez.

Also: Frank Klopas (Chicago), Sigi Schmid (Seattle).

The NYT has a piece upon ZI's goal yesterday and includes links to some of the other great goals ever scored. They miss a few that I think were better (love the Bergkamp one though), but they include this one that I'd never seen before from George Best during his NASL days:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytSt7EnHhXc

Pretty sweet.

ETA: does anyone know why sometimes Youtube links don't hotlink?

The NYT has a piece upon ZI's goal yesterday and includes links to some of the other great goals ever scored. They miss a few that I think were better (love the Bergkamp one though), but they include this one that I'd never seen before from George Best during his NASL days:

I assume that's the one where he cuts back about 16 times in the box? I still think that finishes number 2 behind Cruyuff hitting the turbo button at midfield for the Dips in the "best NASL goal ever" contest, but it's pretty sweet.

Hmmm... I guess I'm the only not that excited by that Ibra goal? Nice goal and all, but I'd never put it in best of category.

Yeah, he's got to get it on target, but there's nobody on him and all he needs to do is just get there to an empty net- and he's made his mind up to do the bike the second Woz heads the ball out, so lots of time to get ready for it. Anybody who played can do a bike- it's the getting to the place and getting it on target (from that kind of distance) that makes this pretty nice. But IMO, his

(and IIRC, there may have been more than one like that that he scored)- he does it in front of a defender and has to come up with the idea for it on the fly as he adjusts to where the cross come in.

That's the one. Really clever little touches all the way in. And thanks for the Cruyuff tip. Had never spent any time watching old vids of his. :bag: Really nice.

Soccer Youtube clips are a hobby of mine. I highly recommend Van Basten and original recipe Ronaldo clips.

I think you're the only one. Ibra had to backpedal to the spot. He had to get WAY up there to start the trajectory over Hart in the first place. He had to generate all his own power (look at how violently he torques his body after contact). If he just hits a soft lob, that's saved at the line. They've been playing the game a long time. We've seen just about every variation on a goal, but I don't think we've ever seen something like this.

I think that's a better candidate than Floppo's. The backheel is a great goal, but it's a matter of timing to get contact. The pace is all provided for him. The France volley was another case wher Ibra had to show significant athleticism to make contact, but then did even better by generating a ton of his own power. The young Ibra also had a goal for Ajax that's very similar to the George Best one linked above.

original recipe Ronaldo clips.
:goodposting: These are by far my favorite clips to date. To be that big and that fast and have that kind of ball skill is just sick. If he'd had his head on better and hadn't been hurt (related IMO) he'd have been in the conversation as greatest ever IMO. He's the Bo Jackson of world footie.ETA: Bergkamp's highlights are also up there for me. He also scored quite a few remarkable goals that rate pretty highly on the uniqueness scale.

What the heck. I figure I'll float this now, even if I probably couldn't start it until around the holiday.

Anyone interested in an all-time soccer draft? My philosophy of internet drafts can pretty much be described as "whatever is totally different from what timsochet would do," but I figure this would need a few rules. At first blush, I'd guess that I'd make it 18 rounds (a starting XI and 7 subs). No special manager or stadium or formation or innovation categories or anything like that. The only other rule I'd probably implement would be to make everyone pick a certain number of players from different eras. I'd make it pretty broad. Something like Pre-1970, 1971-1990, 1991-Present. I don't know whether it would just be squad limits or also starting XI limits.

I'd probably just do round robin matchups with voting. The twist being that each thread for would have two to four "Game Updates" where I work with the team owners and we script a little narrative to reflect how the voting is going. So if one team had a 10 vote lead and suddenly the lead goes down to 3, maybe we write about a super sub coming in and changing the game. Or a goalkeeper howler. If a vote is turning into a rout, maybe the losing side has a player sent off. Maybe even dramatize goals (or other events I suppose) with YouTube clips.

The idea being to amuse each other rather than to answer an unanswerable question. Anyway, if people have ideas, just PM me. Like I said, I probably can't do it until close to the holidays, but I figured I'd see if there was interest.

As a player, he had absolutely no weaknesses. In a documentary (I think it's World's Greatest Footballers, which are all on YouTube), Zico essentially said "if I had played with Ronaldo, I would have had 2000 assists. Because I would have passed it to him every time." Zico marvelled that Ronaldo always picked the right run.

Question for anyone who cares:*Grew up with a kid who was a phenomenal keeper. Best in state type, led us to state finals in high school, won pretty much every award there was.*He hung around with the "wrong" kids and never really worked on his game. Back in the 80's, there was no environment to get a kid like this into to focus on the sport.* Fast forward 27 years and his kid is one of, if not the, top ranked school boys in the state. He is entering his senior year in high school. * The Revolution visited his home and gave him a package during his junior year (I don't know the details), to join their academy.* The Revs put one condition on the deal. If he decided to join their academy, he could not play his final year in high school.* Soccer has been the biggest sport in my home town since the mid 70's and the high school kids are revered. There are still people I pass in town when I go back to visit who talked about when I played 3 decades ago. * After some thought, he turned down the deal. The Revs said they would keep an eye on his progress.I know I don't have all of the needed details but was interested how you guys might have approached counseling your son on something like this.
Just an update on this kid above, Mac Steeves. After deciding to play in high school his senior year, he had a dream season. He broke the schools 31 year old scoring record. He became only the second player in school history to be a 4 year starter (program goes back to the 1960's). Today he led his team to the Division 1 state title. He scored the teams both goals in the semi finals, and then was switched to defense to man mark the other teams best striker in the second half and smothered him. In the final he scored the games only goal with 7 minutes left. Looking forward to seeing if he can make the leap now in college. Not many great players come out of this area so he has a lot of history going against him.

Cracking first 15 minutes for Spurs today, just looked about as good as Spurs can, too much speed for Arsenal defense, one goal disallowed, one goal scored, and then a late, rash challenge by Adebayor :sadbanana:

Arsenal 3-1 now

I enjoy watching Spurs play, but this will be their 4th loss in last 5.....they are on the brink of waving goodbye lots of money. They may be 9th in the table after this game about a third of the season in. And while they should be able to finish above the likes of West Ham...they may be hard pressed to finish higher than 7th or 8th....and this is a team that won at OT, had a lead @ the Eastlands and Emirates.

4-1 :bye:

I think most players/former players here know what I'm talking about when I say this - you know that guy who you play/played with who was just a total #######. You love this guy when he's on your team and he's got your back, but you absolutely hate playing against this guy and just hate when he's on the field because he plays like an #######, for lack of a better term..

This is how I feel about Clint Dempsey.

Houston does it again.

With the lowest payroll in MLS they made their second straight MLS Cup, and 4th in last 7 seasons. All have come with Kinnear as the manager.
